President Bola Ahmed Tinubu leaves Abuja today for Europe for a three-week vacation as part of his annual leave.

This was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, it was reported.

The statement said that the president will first stop in London, United Kingdom.

President Tinubu is also expected to come home after the working vacation to join the hectic campaign for the January 2027 election.

This is coming barely a week after Vise President, Kashim Shettima, resumed official duties two days to the expiration of his two weeks vacation.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, had said the break was the first for Shettima since he was sworn-in as Vise President on May 29, 2023.

He had said that the Vise President utilized the time for study, reflection and intellectual renewal in preparation for his continued service to the country.

Nkwocha said the leave period gave Shettima an opportunity to assess ongoing government programs and expand his understanding of emerging policy issues at the national and international levels.

2027 Election: DSS Halts Sowore’s Prosecution Until After Poll

The Department of State Services (DSS) has directed its private counsel, Akinlolu Kehinde, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, to take steps to seek an adjournment of the case of alleged cyber-bullying it instituted against the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, until after the next presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027.

In a letter to the court, the DSS sought to know if it was appropriate for Sowore to cyber-bully President Bola Tinubu in the August 25, 2025, posts on his “X” handle and Facebook page where he referred to the President as a “criminal.” The DSS further directed that cases of other elective positions’ contestants should also be reviewed accordingly.

According to the secret police, the Sowore matter was to seek judicial interpretation on the propriety of calling President Bola Tinubu or anybody else a criminal arbitrarily, the same way it sought the court’s ruling on the legality of Professor Pat Utomi’s “Shadow Government.”

In a letter to the chairman of Meta Corp on September 6, 2025, the DSS said it is legally required to protect the President not only from physical but also psychological attacks.

Following Sowore’s posts, the DSS asked him to remove them within seven days. When the ultimatum elapsed, and he (Sowore) still refused to pull down the posts, the secret police without inviting or arresting him approached the court for adjudication on September 16, 2025.

A reliable source close to the DSS lawyer confirmed that the Director-General, Mr Tosin Ajayi, met with the senior lawyer and top officers of the DSS legal directorate on August 20, a day after the ban on campaigns was officially lifted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to consider asking the court for an adjournment to allow Sowore to fully exercise his right to contest the forthcoming presidential election.

The source disclosed that the DSS boss reportedly told the Senior Advocate and his directorate of legal services that with the commencement of the presidential campaigns, it would only be fair to adjourn the court case to enable Sowore fully participate in the upcoming elections without let or hindrance.

He said, “The DSS boss told the lawyers that since the matter has been in court for almost a year, suspending it for another few months would not make much difference.

However, the source told PUNCH the DSS would formally communicate to the Federal High Court on Monday, September 14, 2026 its position on adjourning the matter with Sowore, seeking the indulgence of the court for the adjournment when the court would resume normal sittings after returning from annual judicial vacation. He added that other cases involving other candidates are under review.

Counsel Kehinde, when contacted, confirmed the above position adding that it is in consonance with the civilized approach of the current DGSS who will always ensure a level playing field and opportunity for everyone. We will ask the court for an adjournment.

Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck reportedly had a confrontation with policemen at an event on Saturday morning when the policemen were said to have attempted to arrest him.

A video of the incident has emerged online showing the rapper asking the officers why he was being arrested and refusing to leave the venue with them.

According to reports, Odumodublvck was told by one of the officers that he had been invited to meet with the police before and questioned about his reluctance to go with them.

The officer also asked if the rapper was putting up a fight.

It’s all right, the invitation was sent to you. Now what I want to ask you is are you resisting arrest? The officer asked, “If you’re not resisting an arrest, why won’t you follow the police?

However, Odumodublvck said that the matter had already been dealt with by his lawyers.

He argued that the officers had no right to take him from the scene and insisted he had no reason to accompany them.

“You’ve got no jurisdiction that’s what you want to do. “Don’t tell me to wait. My lawyers went to your office, I am not resisting arrest, it was cleared up.You can’t take me from here, my brother. That is against the law.” “You’re telling me not to tweet, not to talk,” he said.

President Tinubu Directs Forensic Audit Across Federal Agencies, Ministries

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed a full forensic audit of federal government systems.

The President has directed that the comprehensive forensic audit be overseen and co-ordinated by the Minister of Finance and Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele.
“The audit would cover, among others, the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), Federal Government agencies and their administration and internal controls,” it stated.

President Tinubu’s directive is sequel to the resolution of the Federal Executive Council on August 19, 2026 on the findings of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) on “fake agencies”, ghost workers and other control failures, a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga said.

The exercise will identify the nature and extent of weaknesses in Government’s control system and determine how such weaknesses have been exploited.

According to Onanuga, the review will have two interrelated parts.

The first will be a forensic audit of Government systems, especially IPPIS and associated payroll, personnel, pension and financial-management platforms. It will probe reported ghost workers and payroll fraud cases, cross check figures identified by the ICPC, trace how fictitious or ineligible persons were enrolled, review access, identity, biometric and bank-account controls.

The exercise will also consider the interfaces between IPPIS and other government platforms including GIFMIS, Remita, the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and Sub-TSA to ascertain whether fraud was perpetrated due to system defects, process failures, inadequate segregation of duties or intentional circumvention.

The second part of the audit will cover all the agencies, departments, commissions, councils, parastatals and other government bodies of the Federal Government. It will create a definitive list of such bodies and check their legal basis. It will look at how entities get official recognition, budgetary consideration, the privilege of correspondence, office facilities and access to government systems.

The exercise will assess governance, procurement, internal audit and oversight controls across Government to address systemic weaknesses that could allow irregular entities or persons to access public resources.

“President Tinubu directed that the exercise was to be conducted with the highest standards of independence, professionalism and forensic integrity.

“The audit team will have access to appropriate government records and systems. It will work with the ICPC to ensure that the review is complementary to all ongoing investigations, prosecutions and recoveries.

“President Tinubu desires the exercise to go beyond identifying individual instances of fraud or administrative failure, but to do so by enhancing the architecture of Government, plugging systemic loopholes, improving data verification and reconciliation, reinforcing accountability and making sure that only duly constituted entities and eligible personnel are the ones having access to Government resources.

“The exercise underscores the President’s commitment to strengthening transparency, accountability, fiscal governance and institutional integrity across the Federal Government,” the statement said.

Cholera Outbreak Persists, NCDC Warns Nigerians

0

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has warned that cholera transmission remains active across the country, urging continued efforts to prevent more infections and deaths.

The warning was given by the Director-General of NCDC, Dr Jide Idris, in Abuja during a press briefing on the current situation, response and measures needed to contain the cholera and diphtheria outbreaks.

He said this year, more than 65,000 suspected cases of cholera have been recorded in 35 States and about 195 Local Government Areas in Nigeria.

He said the weekly number of cholera cases had dropped significantly from the peak recorded earlier this season and the proportion of cases that resulted in death was far lower than in the same period last year, but the situation required sustained response.

“This is a big step forward. But I want to be very clear, the outbreak is not over,” NCDC Director General warned.

Experience in the last few years had shown that cholera transmission could peak between late August and October, while the ongoing rainy season and the risk of flooding could contaminate water sources and overwhelm sanitation systems, he said.

“We are especially concerned about conditions that continue to expose communities to cholera like unsafe water, open defecation, damaged water distribution systems, poor hygiene infrastructure and inadequate sanitation in schools, markets and other public institutions,” Idris said.

“Treatment saves lives but we cannot treat our way out of cholera,” he insisted, urging sustained action on water, sanitation, hygiene, environmental health and community behavior.

One of the clearest lessons from the current outbreak was early access to treatment, said the NCDC chief, especially in Borno State where most of this year’s cases had been reported.

He said better outcomes had been recorded where treatment was brought closer to affected communities and people sought care early.

Diphtheria is still a Worry

The NCDC also reported that more than 10,000 confirmed cases of diphtheria have been recorded in Nigeria this year.

While the disease remains a major health concern, the Director-General noted a significant improvement in the proportion of confirmed cases that have resulted in death, which has decreased substantially compared with the same period last year.

However, he said most of the confirmed cases are still concentrated in a few states, notably Kano, Borno and Bauchi.

Low vaccination coverage is another concern, the NCDC said, with too many children not vaccinated or incompletely vaccinated.

Vaccine hesitancy, insecurity, hard-to-reach communities, displacement and population movement have also made it more difficult to reach every child who needs protection, he said.

“The importance of vaccination cannot be over-emphasised. Diphtheria is preventable with vaccines. We must ensure we improve vaccination coverage and work to ensure that no eligible child is left behind in receiving their vaccination,” the Director General of NCDC said.

NCDC Steps Up Response

NCDC said it continues to coordinate the public health response to both outbreaks with State Governments and partners, providing technical support where it is most needed.

It said surveillance and laboratory capacity are being strengthened and healthcare workers are being supported on case management, infection prevention and control. Affected communities are also being engaged with information on prevention and early care seeking.

The agency said National Rapid Response Teams have been deployed to impacted States to assist with investigation and response activities.

The cholera response emphasizes ensuring early access to treatment and addressing the water, sanitation and hygiene conditions driving transmission.

Teams from Borno and the NCDC have looked into sources of transmission and examined water supply points to determine deficiencies in water quality, sanitation and chlorination.

In Bauchi, the agency collaborated with the State Government to establish oral rehydration points, enhanced treatment capacity and intensified active case searches.

Oral cholera vaccination has also been introduced in high-burden areas, in addition to water chlorination, rehabilitation of water sources and hygiene promotion.

For diphtheria, the response focuses on scaling up vaccination, and rapid case detection and management.

Reactive vaccination is being implemented in affected areas and essential treatment and laboratory commodities continue to be provided.

States urged to do more

Alone, Federal action is not enough to control the outbreaks, the NCDC Director-General said, stressing that many of the interventions that will make the biggest difference have to occur at the State, Local Government, health facility, community and household levels.

He therefore urged State and Local Governments to identify the most vulnerable communities, to fill critical gaps and to deploy available resources and response capacity where they are most needed.

For cholera, he called on governments to improve access to safe water and sanitation, strengthen water-quality monitoring, repair critical water infrastructure, address open defecation, and ensure that high-risk Local Government Areas have functional treatment and rapid-response capacity.

In diphtheria, he called for better vaccination coverage, particularly in affected, hard-hit and underserved communities, alongside increased routine and targeted immunization.

Healthcare Workers, Nigerians Advised to Act

The NCDC also advised health care workers to maintain a high index of suspicion for both diseases, ensure early recognition and reporting, and observe standard infection prevention and control precautions.

For cholera cases, the agency said dehydration should be quickly assessed and appropriate treatment initiated without delay.

“It’s dehydration that kills,” the NCDC Director-General told healthcare workers, highlighting the necessity of prompt management.

He appealed to health facility managers to make sure health care workers had functional triage and isolation systems, appropriate personal protective equipment, hand-hygiene facilities and systems for prompt notification and referral of suspected cases.

The NCDC also called on traditional and religious leaders, community leaders and civil society organizations to assist in disseminating correct information, promoting preventive measures, encouraging early seeking of care and combating misinformation.

To prevent cholera, Nigerians were advised to take care of safe drinking water, to keep the environment clean, to use proper toilets and avoid open defecation and practice regular handwashing with soap and clean running water.

The agency also advised that people who develop frequent watery diarrhea with or without vomiting should immediately start oral rehydration solution and seek care at the nearest health facility.

Parents and caregivers were urged to ensure that their children are fully vaccinated against diphtheria, while those who missed recommended doses should be taken to the nearest health facility to complete their vaccination.

The NCDC said diphtheria vaccines were safe, effective and available free of charge through routine immunization services and vaccination campaigns.

Media Called To Aid Response

The NCDC also urged the media to support the public health response through providing accurate, actionable information that can help protect communities and save lives.

The Director-General urged journalists to stress the importance of safe water and sanitation, oral rehydration and early treatment in preventing deaths from cholera, while helping parents and caregivers understand the importance of vaccination against diphtheria.

He stressed that the outbreak is not over, even if cases of cholera are declining, and that diphtheria remains vaccine-preventable.

The NCDC said there was need for sustained action by the Federal, State and Local Governments, healthcare workers, traditional and religious leaders, partners, communities, families and individuals to prevent further infections and bring the two outbreaks under control.

Trump Says U.S. Will Take Control of Venezuela’s Oil Resources

0

U.S. of America President Donald Trump has declared a plan that would give the U.S. of America majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela’s proven oil reserves through partnerships with private companies.

He said the arrangement, which he said would cost U.S. taxpayers nothing, would help revive Venezuela’s struggling oil industry and increase crude supplies to U.S. refineries, possibly easing pressure on fuel prices.

“Under my direction, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, in conjunction with Highly Respected Interim President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, and in partnership with private business, have obtained majority U.S. control of over 65 BILLION BARRELS of proven Oil Reserves in Venezuela, at no cost to the American Taxpayer,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Venezuela has the world’s largest proven oil reserves but is producing about 1.25 million barrels per day, well below its potential after years of underinvestment, mismanagement and U.S. sanctions.

Venezuelan interim leader Delcy Rodriguez welcomed the agreement, saying it will bring more production and investment and additional government revenue.

The plan would involve the development of 17 strategic oil fields and could raise 209 billion dollars in tax revenue, she said.

“These investments will help not only the recovery and modernization of our industry, but also the economic growth of our country, to the energy security of our hemisphere and to a greater balance in international markets,” Rodriguez said.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the deal was good for both nations, potentially providing stable, low-cost oil supplies for the United States while helping investment and job creation in Venezuela.

The plan could unlock nearly $100 billion in private investment, he said.

But key details of the arrangement remain unclear, including the fields or companies involved, the legal structure of the deal and how the United States would exercise majority control over the reserves.

U.S. companies are expected to play a major role in new oil exploration and production agreements that Venezuelan officials are said to be preparing to sign.

A lease model has been considered, but such an arrangement could face legal and constitutional challenges, given the Venezuelan state keeps control over key aspects of its oil industry.

Analysts also warned the deal may not immediately lower U.S. gasoline prices because Venezuela’s heavy crude requires significant infrastructure to produce, transport and refine, which could take years to develop.

David Goldwyn, president of Goldwyn Global Strategies, asked what the legal basis for the arrangement was and what investment prospects it offered.

“It is hard to see how this kind of arrangement would accelerate investment at any material scale,” he said, citing political uncertainty, inadequate power grid, limited export capacity and government control over the industry.

The deal is Washington’s effort to secure Venezuelan crude for U.S. refineries and to encourage U.S. investment in the energy sector in Venezuela.

The Trump administration is also under pressure over gasoline prices with the approaching November U.S. midterm elections.

In the 1970s, Venezuela took control of its oil industry, with the state-owned PDVSA at the center of the sector.

Under former President Hugo Chavez state controls were increased and in some cases foreign-owned assets were expropriated. Production subsequently fell sharply during the tenure of Nicolas Maduro.
