Reps Spokesman Denies Claims Wike Borrowed Funds Behind National Assembly

0

Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, has reacted to allegations that the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, took loans without the consent of the National Assembly.

Agbese was reacting to allegations by Senator Ireti Kingibe that the FCT Administration had taken a loan without the approval of the legislature.

But Agbese said in a chat with journalists in Abuja on Thursday that it was misleading to claim that Wike had bypassed the National Assembly or acted outside the laid down procedures in securing funds for projects in the FCT.

He said there was no evidence that Wike breached any law in the execution of projects and programs in the FCT.

“Public borrowing was regulated by constitutional, statutory and administrative processes involving government institutions,” the lawmaker said.

“Wike has not breached any rule in borrowings. “There is no basis for the allegation that he has been borrowing money behind the back of the National Assembly,” Agbese said.

He said Wike has always been subjected to legislative scrutiny the administration of the FCT particularly through the presentation and consideration of its budgets and appearances before relevant committees of the National Assembly.

Agbese said the increase in the debt profile of the FCT could not be considered as an illegal borrowing arrangement in itself.

Borrowing for infrastructure development was not illegal in itself if the required approvals and procedures were followed, he said.

“The key issue is whether the necessary approvals and procedures have been followed,” he added.

He also debunked the claim that Wike acted without legislative oversight, saying the National Assembly had continued to exercise oversight functions on the FCT Administration in line with its constitutional mandate.

“FCT Minister is one of the most legislatively compliant public servants under our searchlight. “He has always been engaging with the National Assembly and the activities of the FCT Administration have been subjected to legislative scrutiny,” he said.

He urged lawmakers and others to base allegations on public borrowing on specific transactions and official documents and not political claims.

He said if there were concerns about specific borrowing arrangements, Senator Kingibe or any other interested party should name the transactions and ask the relevant authorities to present the documents and approvals by which they were governed.

2027 Polls: Minister Urges Religious Leaders To Champion Peace

0

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on religious leaders to leverage their platforms to promote peace and national unity ahead of the 2027 general elections, cautioning that inflammatory messages could escalate religious and ethnic tensions in the country.

It was made at the grand finale of the 2026 Synod of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and International Communion of Charismatic Archbishops, Bishops and Apostles (ICCABA) which held at the National Christian Center, Abuja.

Religious leaders, he said, had a vital role in keeping the peace because millions of Nigerians looked to them for direction, not only on spiritual issues but also on issues affecting their communities and the country.
“In an era where misinformation, hate speech, religious intolerance and political tension can be disseminated within minutes, the pulpit and other platforms of religious communication should be spaces for the promotion of truth, peace and responsible citizenship,” Idris warned.

He said political competition was a normal part of democracy but warned that political differences should not be allowed to become religious or ethnic conflicts.

The Minister also warned against portraying the country’s security issues as a religious conflict, saying that terrorists and criminal groups had attacked Nigerians of different religious and ethnic backgrounds.

“The Nigerian Government is committed to protecting the constitutional right of every Nigerian to practise his or her religion freely,” Idris said.

“No Nigerian should be assaulted or discriminated against on the grounds of religion. “Christians, Muslims and other faiths should be able to live and worship in peace,” the Minister emphasized.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration has strengthened intelligence gathering, inter-agency cooperation and military operations against terrorist and criminal networks, Idris said.

On the economy, the Minister said the Nigerian Government was carrying out reforms and creating opportunities for young Nigerians through programs like NELFUND, 3MTT, NYIF, NATEP, SVCG, SUPA and iDICE.

“Nigeria’s greatest resource is not just what is under our soil. It is also the talent and ability of our people. He stressed: “Our greater obligation therefore is to preserve the peace of Nigeria, strengthen its unity and safeguard its future for generations yet to come.

But he said the onus of creating a safe society did not lie with the military and police alone, calling on religious leaders to help check radicalization and criminality among young people.

“Religious leaders have a vital role to play in strengthening social cohesion, steering young people away from radicalization and criminality and promoting dialog and peaceful engagement as the proper response to political, social and economic grievances,” Idris urged.

Idris urged religious organizations to join the government in the fight against misinformation and the promotion of responsible national discourse, and called on churches to increase their contributions to national development through education, healthcare, skills acquisition, youth development and humanitarian services.

A respected religious leader’s statement can bring peace to a community. It can also make you angry. “Therefore, leadership must always go hand in hand with responsibility,” the Minister warned.

Idris urged the religious leaders to see elections within the larger context of the nation’s continuity.

“Looking forward to 2027 and the years ahead, let us remember that elections are events in the life of a nation, while the nation itself goes beyond electoral cycles, governments and political parties,” he reminded the gathering.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume, also speaking, praised the Church for its prayers, humanitarian interventions and contributions to peace, national cohesion and moral formation.

Akume acknowledged the sacrifices Nigerians have made in the ongoing course of economic reforms, assuring citizens that the Government remains focused on improving household incomes, reducing hardship and ensuring that the benefits of reform are increasingly felt across the country.

Akume assured Nigerians, “Our citizens are patriotic and resilient and we commend them for that and we assure them that it will never be in vain, as promised by Mr President himself.

He also called for greater partnership between the Government and the Church to address Nigeria’s security and development challenges particularly in the areas of youth empowerment, education, peace building, civic responsibility and humanitarian service.

For his part, the President General of CBCN, Archbishop Prof. Leonard Bature Kawas, said the Conference would support the presidential election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 general election, citing the policies of the administration and what he described as the administration’s efforts to promote national development and inclusivity.

Kawas told the assembly that the Church had reviewed the record of the administration and was ready to continue supporting the President.

“We’re behind him now. “We support him today, we support him tomorrow, and we will support him as long as he is willing to be our president,” Kawas said.

He added that the position was the mandate of the gathering, saying, “This house has endorsed him for the 2027 presidency.”

The 2026 Synod of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and the International Communion of Charismatic Archbishops, Bishops and Apostles (ICCABA) gathered Christian faith leaders, bishops and apostles to discuss the future of the Church, worship and community collaboration.

The father of late Nollywood actress Nimmy Ferrari has reacted to allegations made by her mother on the burial of the actress and ownership of her newly completed house.

Nimmy’s mother is reported to have accused her late daughter’s father of trying to get her remains out of the property so that the family could take over and sell the house, it is claimed.

In reply to the allegations, Nimmy’s father denied any intention of harming his daughter saying he could not kill his own child.

He said it was Nimmy who told him she was already in a hospital for fibroid surgery.

He said: “When I got to know that she went to hospital for the procedure, I asked why she didn’t tell me earlier.

He also said he got worried when he found out Nimmy had already paid for some medical examinations and the proposed surgery would cost about ₦3.6 million.

“About the house she called me and said she wanted to build her own house. I told the elders in the family and they told us to cut out a portion for her from our family land.

“While I was building the house for her, she implored me not to let her mother know about it. That the first land she ever bought was through her mom. Her mother sold the land later.”

China, Slovakia Move To Deepen Bilateral Cooperation – Xi, Pellegrini

0

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Slovak President Peter Pellegrini have pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation, with trade, technology and China-European Union relations high on the agenda of their talks in Beijing.

Xi said China was ready to deepen its strategic partnership with Slovakia and broaden cooperation in emerging and strategic sectors, including clean energy, the digital economy, robotics and artificial intelligence.

The Chinese president also called on Slovakia to play a constructive role in promoting China-EU relations, stressing the need for dialogue and cooperation in managing differences.

Pellegrini, who is on a three-day state visit to China, urged Beijing to improve market access for Slovak companies as part of efforts to address Slovakia’s trade deficit with China.

“I asked the President and members of the government for better access for Slovak companies to the Chinese market so that we could reduce the negative trade balance,” he said.

The Slovak president said Bratislava supported dialogue rather than confrontation between the European Union and China, warning that a trade war would serve neither side’s interests.

On artificial intelligence, Pellegrini said the two sides agreed on the need to ensure that the technology remained subject to human oversight.

The leaders also exchanged views on international conflicts, including the war in Ukraine, with Pellegrini stressing that diplomatic engagement remained the only viable path towards a resolution.

Pellegrini also invited Xi to visit Slovakia, saying the Chinese president had responded positively to the invitation.

UNIBEN Refutes ASUU’s Claim That Lecturers Received Half Salary

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has dissociated itself from the industrial action embarked upon by the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), describing the claims of salary underpayment as misinformation and misinterpretation of facts.

ASUU, in a communique signed by its Chairman, Professor Enaruna Edosa, and Secretary, Dr Lucky Aimiyekagbon, had directed its members to withdraw their services over what it described as the payment of half salaries to academic staff.

The union announced “a total and indefinite withdrawal of services until the underpaid salaries are paid in full”.

ASUU also instructed members to “cease to teach, supervise or attend Departmental Board, Faculty Board, Senate or other statutory meetings or participate in any academic or administrative activity while this action lasts.

However, the University Management denied the allegations that academic staff received half salaries in August 2026, saying the matter was a misunderstanding regarding a certain allowance.

The Management, in a statement signed by the University’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Dr Benedicta Ehanire, said the confusion had been cleared.

“The Federal Government has paid the salaries of all categories of staff up to August, 2026,” the PRO stated.

The University Management noted that before publication, any allegation against the institution must be verified, adding that UNIBEN is a public institution with a system already in place for the authentication of information.

“The Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), which was mistaken for salary, has now been paid out to the staff who are eligible for the allowance, and the federal government has released it,” she said.

Dr Ehanire assured members of ASUU that Management remained committed to the payment of all entitlements due to staff without hindrance.

She called on stakeholders not to undue sensationalisation of issues in an effort to keep the existing industrial harmony in the University and the Nigerian university system generally.

Tinubu Loves Nigeria – Yari Speaks On APC’s 2027 Plans

0

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that it will base its 2027 presidential campaign on the performance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, and not personal attacks on political opponents.

This was disclosed by the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdulazeez Yari, in Gusau, Zamfara State, after a meeting behind closed doors with Governor Dauda Lawal and traditional rulers in the state on Wednesday.

Yari said the campaign would be used to tell Nigerians what the Tinubu administration has done and what it intends to do if given another term.

He said the campaign would be about issues and the government’s record, not promises or personal attacks.

He said that Nigeria had passed through difficult periods that made some people to doubt if the country would remain united but Nigerians had continued to protect the unity of the nation.

“Nigeria is a great nation. We have been seeing so many things, from June 12 to others, that some predicted Nigeria will not continue as a country. That’s where we are. “This is the reason Nigerians are still keeping this country as a united country,” Yari stated.

“Tinubu is committed to the development of the country and has shown his love for Nigeria,” the former Zamfara State governor said, it was reported.

“Tinubu is more than any other person. “He is for Nigerians, he is a leader that loves this country without any fear of contradiction,” Yari said.

Yari said the 2027 campaign would not be about making fresh promises but about showing Nigerians what the APC-led administration had done since taking office.

He said his first official engagement as campaign council director-general was with traditional rulers because of their close relationship with the people.

“While traditional rulers are not politicians, they have an important role to play in society and their support would be valuable to the campaign,” he said.

He said it was necessary to seek their support and blessings as the party prepares for the 2027 election.

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, said the meeting was held to officially introduce Yari to the traditional rulers after his appointment as Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.

The governor said Yari was a son of the state and that it was important for him to receive the support of the traditional leaders ahead of the campaign.

\”It is important for us to hand him over to them to seek for their support. “This is the reason for the meeting,” Lawal said.

The governor also assured the campaign council that Tinubu would have the full support of the people of Zamfara State in the 2027 presidential election.

FG Blames Universities For Pay Rise, ASUU President Says

BY HENRY TYOHEMBA, Abuja, FRANCIS OKOYE, Maiduguri, ABU NMODU, Minna, ACHOR ABIMAJE, Jos, PATRICK OCHOGA, Benin, ANAYO ONUKWUGHA, Port Harcourt, ADEBAYO WAHEED, Ibadan, SAMUEL ABULUDE, Lagos, JOSUA DADA, Osogbo, FEMI OYEWESO, Abeokuta

Fresh concerns have emerged across the federal university system over the implementation of the 40 per cent salary increase for university lecturers, with some institutions unable to pay the full salary package.

The development, almost eight months after the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) agreed on the increase, has forced some universities to stop payment they initially started, citing lack of funds.

Findings across some federal universities revealed that institutions that had started implementing the increment were forced to suspend it as their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) could not carry the additional wage bill anymore.

Top ASUU officials told our correspondents that after the federal government and the union signed the renegotiated agreement on January 14, 2026, with the 40 per cent upward review of academic staff remuneration backdated to January 1, the government directed universities to source the increase from their IGR.

However, none of the ASUU officials could produce the alleged federal government memo directing universities to do so.

The federal government had on February 1 announced the commencement of implementation of the increase and directed federal universities to include the new salaries in their payroll systems. But implementation has been patchy.

By August, a number of universities had not yet fully implemented the increment, whereas some that had begun paying it had stopped. The development has forced ASUU branches to issue ultimatums and demand adherence to the agreement.

Most university managements contacted refused to explain the reasons for the shortfalls.

Senior officials of ASUU also expressed surprise at how vice-chancellors of institutions that have continued to pay their lecturers in full managed to sustain the payments, despite the funding challenges.

How UNIBEN Dumped Half Salaries

While some universities were said to have been having payment difficulties since May, the issue remained largely out of the public domain until the ASUU branch of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) raised the alarm on Monday.

Academic activities at UNIBEN were overshadowed by anxiety after lecturers received just half of their August salaries while non-academic staff reportedly received their full salaries.

Sources at the university said the payment did not include the usual allowances and this had left many lecturers, especially those servicing loans taken out through the university, distressed.

In a notice to members, the UNIBEN ASUU branch said it had met with the university management over the development and advised members not to panic.

The notice, signed by the branch secretary, Dr L. O. Aimiyekagbon, said the union had been assured by the university authorities that more salary alerts would be received.

But sources familiar with the matter said the university paid the August salaries from its IGR after the federal government failed to release its monthly subvention to the institution.

Yesterday, the branch chairman, Enaruna Edosa, said the executive committee would meet before calling a congress to decide the union’s response.

Speaking with Edosa said the members would ultimately decide the way forward.

“We are meeting as the executive committee now to discuss the matter, and afterward we will convene a congress where all members will participate and decide the way forward. “Our members will lead us,” he said.

When contacted, the university’s public relations officer, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, declined to comment, saying the ASUU leadership was better placed to speak on the matter.

The last time the academic staff of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, got the 40 per cent salary increase was in May.

The university’s ASUU branch chairman, Prof. Lookman Oyewobi, said the development was in line with the federal government’s directive that universities should source the fund for the increment from their internally generated funds.

He said the management was able to absorb the additional salary component from January to May before it stopped the payment as it could no longer afford the cost.

Oyewobi said the university’s IGR could not be diverted to sustain the salary increase because the funds were tied to services that students were charged for specific purposes.

The university had not received any additional federal allocation to cover the increase, he said, and staff were becoming increasingly agitated.

Oyewobi said FUT Minna’s situation was relatively better as management had sustained the additional payment for five months, unlike many other universities that could not do so.

The university’s head of Information, Lydia Legbo, when asked whether salaries had been paid, simply stated, “Salary was paid,” but declined to comment further.

The chairman of ASUU at the University of Maiduguri in Borno State, Mohammed Waziri, told The Associated Press that union members also received part of their salaries in August.

Waziri explained that only 10 per cent of the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) as well as professional allowance for members in veterinary and human medicine was not paid.

He said the university has paid members’ salaries for June, July and August, but the federal government’s reimbursement is still outstanding.

When contacted, the university’s public relations officer, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi, said the management was in a meeting and could not say when it would end.

She had not responded at the time of filing the report.

However, Prof. Idowu Keinde, the chairman of ASUU, University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter, challenged the assertion that the UNIBEN shortfall was a consequence of the university’s inability to receive federal allocation.

“It is not true that members of UNIBEN ASUU were paid half salaries because the university did not receive federal allocation. Those findings should be well established. Back to your question, we did not get full salaries; in fact, no staff at UNILAG did, and it’s not because of federal allocations. “Our National Executive Committee has taken cognizance of this development and will deal with it,” he said.

The ASUU branch chairman at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Dr Ola Olusegun Oyedele said the university did not pay the lecturers their full August salaries because the university did not include the Enhanced Academic Allowance (EAA).

Oyedele, who spoke in Abeokuta yesterday, said FUNAAB management had paid only three months out of the eight months of the EAA arrears owed lecturers.

“The five-month bailout fund was released by the federal government, only two months was given to FUNAAB because we are a specialized university. That was the reason why the institution released the three-month EAA,” he added.

Minister’s Aide Directs NUC To Probe

The Federal Ministry of Education has ordered an investigation into the delay in the payment of August salaries of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Ikharo Attah, the special adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Education, refused to comment on the situation at UNIBEN and the issue of half salaries, saying the question should be directed to the public relations officer of the university concerned and possibly the NUC.

OAU, UNIPORT, FUTA To Get Full Salaries

However, the reports of salary shortfalls are not uniform across the federal university system.

Prof. Al-Amin Abdullahi, the zonal coordinator of ASUU who is also a lecturer at the Federal University, Lafia, told that salaries were being paid at his institution.

“I am at the university, Federal University of Lafia, and salary has been paid,” Abdullahi said.

But he said the Abuja Zone had no statistics to show how many federal universities might have had the same problem.

At the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), ASUU members said they had no knowledge of any shortfall in lecturers’ salaries.

Prof. Emmanuel Ngoke, the university’s ASUU chairman, refused to comment on the issue but a senior ASUU official who asked not to be named said the union’s members in the university and its Owerri Zone had not been paid half salary.

“University of Port Harcourt is in the Owerri zone, and we are yet to have any short payment of salaries among members of ASUU in the zone. He said, “We’ve never seen anything like it.”

Lecturers at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, also said they received their full August salaries.

The institution’s ASUU chairman, Pius Mogaji, disclosed this while reacting to reports of half salary payments at UNIBEN.

He said the situation did not affect the Federal University of Technology, Akure, where lecturers had received their full salaries for August.

Members of ASUU at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife had also been paid their salaries through August 2026.

However, the union’s chairman, Prof. Tony Odiwe, said the federal government had not failed to cash-back the payments as agreed with ASUU.

“My vice-chancellor has managed to pay us our full salary till August. I don’t know how he is doing it, but our salaries are being paid. That is all I can say at present,” he said.

Also, the chairman of ASUU, University of Jos (UNIJOS) chapter, Prof. Jurbe Joseph Molwus, said lecturers at the university had continued to receive their full salary package.

He stressed that the half salary situation was not the situation in UNIJOS, but said that the university’s ability to pay did not mean the federal government had remitted the needed funds.

“Only the ingenuity of the current university leadership under Prof. “The full package of their salaries is not being funded and all the federal universities are suffering because of that,” he said.

When this report was being filed yesterday, ASUU national president, Prof. Christopher Piwuna’s mobile line was switched off and could not be reached for comment.

Nigerian Influencer’s Fatal Procedure: Clinic Says He Rejected Doctor’s Advice

A Bangkok cosmetic clinic has told Thai investigators that Nigerian content creator Igho “Tiny” Ubiribo elected to have a penis enlargement procedure in one session despite being advised by a doctor to have the treatment split into two sessions.

Ubiribo, a Nigerian influencer living in London, died on March 6, less than 24 hours after receiving hyaluronic acid injections at the Bangkok clinic, according to records from an inquest at Westminster Coroner’s Court previously obtained by PEOPLE.

At an inquest on August 21, post-mortem and toxicology results were reported to have connected his death to the hyaluronic acid injection and a pulmonary embolism. Ubiribo had developed chest pains and collapsed, several hours after the procedure, on March 5.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital for a CT scan, but lost consciousness before the test could be done. According to reports, medical personnel attempted CPR for 101 minutes before he was declared dead at 1.05am on March 6.
On September 7, Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health announced that it had launched an investigation into the clinic. Health Minister Pattana Phromphat ordered the Department of Health Service Support and the Food and Drug Administration to investigate what happened and whether the clinic complied with required medical standards, the ministry said.

The clinic told investigators that Ubiribo had been receiving treatment there since 2024 and had undergone five penile enlargement injections, said Phuwadet Surakot, Director-General of the Department of Health Service Support.
Surakot said the clinic said a doctor had advised Ubiribo before the procedure on March 5 to split the treatment into two sessions, but he asked for the injections to be administered in a single session. The clinic also said he signed a consent form before each treatment and was given aftercare instructions.

The authorities will now look at the records of the clinic and other evidence before deciding if the case should be referred to the Medical Council. “We will collect all the facts and evidence to take action according to our authority and send the case to the Medical Council for a verdict on the professional standard of practice, to be fair to all parties,” the Ministry of Public Health said.
