Awaziem joins MLS’ FC Cincinnati

0

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has completed his transfer from Boavista in Portugal to Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati, where he will join compatriot Obinna Nwobodo.

The Orange and Blue had previously expressed strong interest in the Nigerian centre-back and were in advanced discussions to secure his services during the summer transfer window.

The former FC Porto defender was a vital player for Boavista during their 2023/24 Liga Portugal campaign, contributing one assist in 24 appearances, which piqued their interest.

According to Major League Soccer reporter Tom Bogert, the deal has now been finalised, confirming that Awaziem will be joining the USA-based club.

FC Cincinnati’s official reporter, Pat Brennan, further corroborated this, noting that Awaziem will replace the United States Men’s National Team defender Matt Miazga, who is currently sidelined with an injury.

Awaziem’s arrival bolsters Cincinnati’s defensive lineup and reunites him with fellow Super Eagles star Nwobodo, whose contract with the club runs until 2025.

This move would see Awaziem leave his fellow countrymen, Ibrahim Alhassan and Bruno Onyemeachi, at Estádio do Bessa, ending his time in Portugal since 2014.

Aruna, others face tough table tennis battles

0

Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna has been handed a familiar foe in Romania’s Eduard Ionescu in his first game of the men’s singles of the table tennis event of the Paris 2024 Olympics, but he is on a collision course with world number one Wang Wang Chuqin in the round of 32, According Sports Extra reports.

The 35-year-old has been drawn bye in the first round and will begin in the round of 64 against Ionescu.

His compatriot, Olajide Omotayo, has a tough duel against Iran’s Noshad Alamiyan in the first round of men’s singles in the table tennis competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The draw conducted on Wednesday, July 23 at the South Paris Arena and witnessed by coaches and team managers also handed Africa’s flagbearers, Egypt, a big hurdle in the team and mixed doubles events.

Like Omotayo, Offiong Edem will lock horns against Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi, while debutant Fatimo Bello will face a Herculean task against the Chinese-born French star Jia Nana Yuan in the first round of the Women’s Singles.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games mark a momentous occasion for table tennis: its 10th appearance as an Olympic sport since its debut at Seoul 1988 in South Korea.

According to the head-to-head between Aruna and Romanian, both players have met once, and that was during the semi-finals of the European Champions League, in which the Romanian defeated Aruna 3-2, and Paris 2024 will be their second meeting in any competition.

Like Aruna, Omotayo will face a southpaw Iranian whose style most times confuses opponents and has also taken down some of the finest players in the world with his awkward style of play. Omotayo will have to be at his best if he hopes to win his first match at the Olympic Games.

59 electricity workers die on duty in two quarters

0

At least 59 electricity workers died in the line of duty between the fourth quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has said.

A report by the commission confirmed that 23 of the workers lost their lives in 55 accidents in the first quarter of 2024.

The NERC disclosed that 31 others sustained injuries in the 55 accidents.

“The total number of accidents in 2024/Q1 was 55 which resulted in 31 injuries and 23 fatalities,” the report revealed.

It stated that the number of deaths recorded in the fourth quarter of 2023 was 36; which was 13 more deaths compared to 23 in Q1 2023.

In the last quarter of 2023, 54 accidents and 30 injuries were recorded in the Nigerian electricity supply industry.

The commission stated that it had launched investigations into all the accidents and would continue to work with all sector stakeholders to improve the overall health and safety of the NESI.

According to NERC, the details of the major causes of casualties (deaths and injuries) recorded in Q1 2024 are wire snaps – six deaths and six injuries; illegal/unauthorised access – five deaths and two injuries; acts of vandalism – two deaths and five injuries; unsafe acts/conditions – 10 deaths and 12 injuries; falls from height – two injuries.

Out of the 54 casualties reported in the quarter, the licensees with the highest number of casualties were Eko Disco, 13; Benin Disco, eight; Jos Disco, six; and Aba power, six.

“Cumulatively, Discos accounted for 96.30 per cent of casualties recorded in 2024/Q1 continuing a trend observed in previous quarters (98.48 per cent in 2023/Q4) that the distribution segment is the biggest contributor to safety issues experienced in the NESI (Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry,” the report partly read.

The commission disclosed that it had initiated investigations into all reported accidents and would enforce appropriate actions against licensees where necessary.

“Furthermore, the commission continues to closely monitor the implementation of licensees’ accident reduction strategy for the NESI while the sector’s health and safety code is undergoing a review process. The commission also implements various programmes aimed at improving the health and safety performance of the NESI.

“In March 2024, a quarterly peer review meeting was held with the compliance and regulatory officers of licensees to discuss the reporting obligations of licensees as well as health and safety matters,” NERC said.

The commission said it oversees settlement processes between licensees and families of accident victims in the industry to ensure transparency of the settlement process and to help the victim’s family secure fair compensation for losses suffered.

An expert in the electricity industry, Adetayo Adegbemle, expressed worries over the loss of lives in the industry.

Adegbemle, who is the Convener and Executive Director of PowerUp Nigeria, a power sector policy advocacy organisation, lamented that most of the Discos staff lack basic Personal Protective Equipment.

“This is a serious issue that’s been bothering me. Many Discos’ staff across the country lack basic Personal Protective Equipment. I have personally taken this up with many of the Discos. Honestly, I believe our regulators need to intervene in this,” he stated.

Adegbemle called for more safety campaigns and the push for regulatory interventions to curb the situation.

“I am sure if the Discos are sanctioned effectively, there should be a turnaround. And if a Disco catches their technical staff without PPEs, and they are sanctioned as well, there will be some sanity,” he maintained.

In September 2021, The According reported that an Ikeja Electric worker identified simply as Tunde fell from a pole on Palace Way, Abule, Arepo, in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

It was gathered that Tunde and his colleagues went to disconnect the power supply in the community when the incident happened.

In December 2020, two employees of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company were electrocuted in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

According gathered that the victims were at work when power was suddenly restored to the line, and they died on the spot.

Analysts warn of naira depreciation amid N311bn equity sell-off

0

Financial analysts have expressed concerns over the recent trend of high foreign liquidation in the Nigerian Exchange with N311.41bn worth of investments withdrawn in the first half of this year.

This has sparked fears of naira devaluation and its potential impact on the Nigerian economy.

According to the NGX, in a report titled ‘Domestic & Foreign Portfolio Investment’, the N311.41bn worth of portfolio investments liquidated in the first half of the year compared starkly with the N73.06bn in foreign outflows recorded in the same period in 2023.

The report stated that foreign investments witnessed a surge, with inflows reaching N540.48bn, a 272.55 per cent increase from N145.08bn in 2023. Foreign outflows also increased, from N72.02bn in 2023 to N229.07bn in 2024

Speaking with our correspondent, a financial analyst, Olaid Baanu, highlighted the sharp increase in foreign capital inflows to N229.07bn in the first half of the year, up from N72.02bn in the same period in the previous year, stating that this initially indicated growing interest from foreign investors and bolstered market confidence.

However, the substantial liquidation value suggests a profit-taking sentiment among foreign investors. Baanu, a seasoned investment banker, explained, “While the increased inflows are encouraging, the high liquidation indicates that foreign investors are cashing out their profits, which could destabilise the market.”

He added that the depreciation of the naira in the NAFEM market by N598.19 (65.7 per cent) per United States dollar in the first half of the year further complicated the situation.

This devaluation affects the value of outflows, raising uncertainty about whether investors can achieve higher returns relative to the market growth of 33.8 per cent.

“Consequently, the liquidation is not expected to significantly impact the NGX as foreign investors now exhibit a bit of greater confidence in the Nigerian FX market compared to recent years,” Baanu noted.

In the short term, Baanu does not foresee any immediate implications for exchange stability due to the increasing participation of local investors. However, the long-term outlook is less optimistic.

“Could the liquidation be stopped? No, legitimate transactions cannot be stopped. However, the rate of liquidation could be slowed if the naira appreciates against other currencies, thereby providing foreign investors with higher returns on investment,” Baanu stated.

Analysts further warn that persistent high liquidation may erode market performance and dampen investor sentiment.

Also speaking to our correspondent, a broker, Bisi Bakare, stated that the high liquidation rate raises concerns about the NGX’s long-term stability.

“It has a lot of effect on the exchange because it will discourage foreign investors and local investors. If such a thing could happen to foreign investors, what is the guarantee for others? It will discourage foreign investors from coming and investing in the Nigerian capital market. It is not good enough and it is a bad image for capital market investors,” Bakare emphasised.

Stating the potential impact on the economy at large is another concern, the broker added, “When companies do not have trust in the business they are doing and the government can come at any time to do anything they want to do, investors are in trouble because they are likely to lose. Foreign investors need stability in their business.”

She noted that investors could face significant losses, adding that manufacturing companies and international breweries, which rely heavily on imports, are expected to be the most affected. The banking sector, in contrast, is likely to be the least affected.

“The Nigerian Exchange Limited can do better. There should be a lot of notice and awareness so that such companies can be aware ahead and if it can be avoidable. Investors are likely to lose trillions of naira. It is uncountable, and it is like putting salt on an injury,” Bakare said.

“The persistent high liquidation may recede market performance and truncate investor positive sentiment,” she warned, urging for measures to enhance investor confidence and market stability.

She stated that as the NGX navigates these turbulent times, all eyes are on the government and market regulators to provide a stable and conducive environment for both foreign and local investors.

Last month, The According reported that the total transactions on the local bourse hit N2.35tn at the end of May, indicating a 115.40 per cent increase compared to the first five months of 2023.

Domestic investors maintained their dominance in the market as they transacted about N1.79tn (79.63 per cent) in the five months compared to N458.29bn (20.37 per cent) for foreign investors.

C’River Assembly decries influx of illegal miners

0

The Cross River State House of Assembly, on Thursday,  called on the state government, through its relevant agencies, to stop the activities of some Fulani migrants engaging in illegal mining in Okwa 1 and 2 and Ukwango in the Boki Local Government Area of the state.

The Assembly made the call in Calabar, on Thursday, following a matter of urgent public importance on the encroachment by Fulani in Okwa 1 and 2 and Ukwango communities of Boki LGA, sponsored by the member representing Boki 1 State Constituency, Philip Obi.

Leading the debate, Obi who is the Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, said some unidentified Fulani, estimated to be over 1,000, had arrived at the Boki communities in pursuit of solid minerals.

He said the migrants had been carrying out illicit gold mining within the Government Reserved Area, robbing Boki LGA as well as the state of its natural resources and revenue.

He also expressed concern about the well-being of his constituents, fearing that the communities would face a crisis as the influx of the Fulani had exceeded the number of indigenes.

“These communities now live in fear for their lives and property,” he said.

In separate contributions, members lamented that illegal mining had become endemic in the state, describing the situation as unfortunate.

The lawmakers also observed that illegal mining was usually accompanied by criminality, as they called on security agencies to stop the menace as soon as possible.

The Assembly further resolved that security agencies be deployed in the affected communities to arrest and prosecute illegal miners.

It also sought the engagement of advocacy groups to educate community leaders on the ills of allowing illegal mining in their communities.

The Speaker, Elvert Ayambem, commended members for their support for the motion and commitment towards improving the lives of the citizens through effective legislation.

Ayambem noted that illegal mining contributed greatly to environmental degradation and promised that the Assembly would ensure the people of Boki did not suffer any negative consequences.

He advised the traditional rulers and the youth of the affected area to maintain peace so that the situation did not culminate in violence and loss of lives.

The lawmakers further described the administration of Governor Bassey Otu as a responsive government with its “Peoples First” mantra and expressed confidence that issues affecting the well-being of the citizens would receive immediate attention.

A 41-year-old man, identified as Nwalobi Fredrick, has been arrested for allegedly impregnating his 16-year-old sister-in-law(name withheld) in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Nwalobi, an artisan who hails from Ebonyi State, was arrested by security operatives on Thursday, after the family of the girl reported the incident at the office of the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare in Awka.

The suspect, who was said to be newly remarried in April after the death of his first wife, blamed the devil for his action.

This development was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by Chidinmma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo.

When interrogated, the suspect said he didn’t have money to take care of the girl since he now had his own family.

The statement read, “During interrogation, the 16-year-old girl revealed that the incident started in late January when she was brought to be kept in the custody of her in-law to enable her to finish her secondary education since the demise of her mother.

“She explained that it was just a day after settling in his house that Mr. Nwalobi first had carnal knowledge of her and ever since, has been having his way with her body.

“Upon further interrogation, she revealed that she was already four months gone, and ever since she became pregnant, her in-law had refused to take responsibility for putting her in a family way.

“Meanwhile, the 41-year-old suspect, who remarried in April after the death of his first wife, says he doesn’t have money to take care of the girl since he now has his own family.”

Ikeanyionwu added that despite the suspect’s pleas, Obinabo handed him over to the Divisional Police in Ekwulobia for further investigation.

Obinabo vowed to get to the root of the matter to ensure justice for the victim to serve as a deterrent to others who are into such acts.

LAWMA arrests two for illegal waste disposal

0

Officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority on Thursday arrested two persons for dumping waste at a roundabout in Surulere.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed in a statement shared on X.

“These two culprits were captured red-handed by @Lawma_gov while dumping waste at Shitta Roundabout, Surulere early this morning. We have brought them to court at the Task Force, Oshodi for prosecution.

“If you love Lagos, please spread the #ZeroToleranceLagos message: if we catch you dumping waste or committing any other environmental infractions in our Lagos, you will be made to face the full wrath of the law,” he wrote.

In July, the state government identified two residents caught disposing trash in floodwater in the Ijesha community in the Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area of the state.

This followed a photo shared on social media showing a man and a woman rolling the thrash drum in the flooded water on the street.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who reacted on X, said, “The house has been identified and locked immediately by the Environmental Health Service Department of Itire-Ikate LCDA.”

In another post, Wahab, on Thursday disclosed that government officials had sealed a market on Lagos Island for environmental violations.

“The Lagos State government sealed Sura Market, Lagos Island over environmental infractions,” he wrote while posting pictures and video from the scene.

He had yet to give further details as of the time of filing this report.

LASG distances self from planned Oro festival

0

The Lagos State Government has distanced itself from the rumoured upcoming Oro festival scheduled for August 1 to 15, 2024, coinciding with the #EndBadGovernance protest.

The government likened it to other religious activities held across the country.

An X user, @lagospedia, had on Wednesday posted that the Oro festival would hold in Lagos from August 1, saying “This traditional Yoruba cultural event involves significant rituals.” The post generated mixed reactions.

Speaking in a telephone interview with The According on Thursday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, said no one questions the government when other religions hold their activities.

He noted that the same respect should be maintained for traditional worshippers because they have the right to worship according to the constitution and can go about their lawful exercises.

“Oro festival is like Muslim and Christian activities and has no business with Lagos State government interference. We don’t have a hand in how any religious group goes about their lawful activities.

“The protesters have their rights just like the traditional worshippers who want to perform their activities too. What is our business in that?

“If anybody wants to protest, they should come out and carry out their right lawfully by not disrupting the business activities in the state. We will not allow the peace of the state to be disrupted. No responsible government will allow it,” he said.

Alluding to the 2020 #EndSARS protest that led to the destruction of property and loss of lives in the state, Akosile said the state government frowned on its recurrence and would stop it from happening again.

The According had earlier reported that some Nigerians were planning to protest against economic hardship in the country.

The demonstration, which is gaining traction on social media, has been scheduled to be held across all states of the Federation as well as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, from August 1 to 10, 2024.
