Bayelsa in darkness as vandals attack TCN towers

0

Bayelsa State has been thrown into darkness following the collapse of two transmission towers attacked by vandals.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria stated on Thursday that the two transmission towers, T98 and T99 along the Ahoada/Yenagoa 132kV line, were vandalised on July 29, in the Igbooghene community of Bayelsa State

A statement by the TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, on Thursday disclosed that the incident caused the collapse of both towers, cutting off the power supply to the state, including TCN’s Yenagoa Sub-station and the Gbarain Power Station.

“Presently, Yenagoa Metropolis and the entire Bayelsa State are still without power supply.”

“Our engineers, led by the General Manager Transmission, Port Harcourt Region, Engr. Emmanuel Akpa, accompanied by men from the DSS inspected the site of the vandalised towers. Plans are already ongoing to mobilise a contractor on an emergency basis to reconstruct the collapsed towers,” Mbah stated.

Mbah disclosed that an individual was caught on June 16 vandalising tower T238 along the Owerri/Ahoada 132kV double circuit transmission line, while another act of vandalism occurred on June 10 at the Ahoada Transmission Substation.

“TCN is urging the public to help in the ongoing fight against the vandalism of power infrastructure nationwide. The company will continue to collaborate with security operatives and host communities including the DSS and Civil Defence Corps to combat the menace.

“Meanwhile, we are interfacing with stakeholders including security operatives in Yenagoa to put in place other initiatives geared towards helping TCN curtail the menace within the state.

“As we continue to work towards a robust grid, it is pertinent to note that a nation’s power sector cannot grow efficiently if funds intended for infrastructural expansion are repeatedly used to replace vandalised equipment,” the statement concluded.

Reps beg Nigerians to end protests

0

Fifty members of the House of Representatives on Thursday rallied support for the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd, Mele Kyari, and the Chief Executive of the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Farouk Ahmed.

They also appealed for calm while imploring all Nigerians to bring the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests to an end.

The lawmakers faulted the calls for the removal of Kyari and Farouk and described the move as premature.

The lawmakers, led by Billy Osawaru (Edo State) said the call for the sacking of Kyari when an investigation is currently being carried out was an action that is against parliamentary culture.

The deputy spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese had asked President Bola Tinubu to immediately dismiss Kyari for allegedly stifling the economy’s growth due to the oil sector crisis.

Agbese had also called on the President to sack Farouk and other inherited appointees.

But reacting to the call, Osawaru, during a press briefing on Thursday, said it was against parliamentary culture to call for the sack of an official of government when an investigation involving such a person had not been concluded.

He said it is in the parliamentary culture to afford parties in the investigation of the right for a fair hearing and called on the committee handling the probe to be impartial.

He said, “Nigerians will recall hike in fuel prices and associated challenges are fundamental concerns.  The House of Representatives vide its resolutions mandated the joint committee of the House on Midstream and Downstream Petroleum to investigate issues in the oil and gas sector.

“We are aware that the investigation is ongoing and a final decision has not been reached. However, our attention has been drawn to some media reports calling for the removal of the Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPCL and the Chief Executive Officer of NMDPRA while the above investigation is subsisting.

“We wish to state that it is in the parliamentary culture to afford parties in an investigation that right to a fair hearing. Therefore,  the call for removal of anyone while the investigation is pending is premature.

“We therefore call on all Nigerians to be patient and law-abiding in expectation of a better Nigeria.”

The lawmakers also expressed concern about the ongoing protests in the country, saying they converged to further appraise the situation as it affects the well-being of Nigerians.

They appealed for calm and begged all Nigerians to bring the protests to an end.

He added, “Today, the 1st of August, 2024, no less than 50 members of the House of Representatives who are deeply concerned about the ongoing protests have converged to further appraise the situation as it affects the well-being of Nigerians.

“First, we wish to commend the efforts of the National Assembly, particularly the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Right Honorable Tajudeen Abbas, PhD, for convening the youth dialogue to douse the tensions surrounding the scheduled protests.

“Having observed the nationwide protests, we commend the youths and Nigerians in general for the manner they have conducted themselves. We appeal for calm while imploring all Nigerians to bring the protests to an end.”

Zimbabwe arrests 18 activists, warns against protests

0

Zimbabwe police charged Thursday 18 activists who took part in demonstrations for the release of the main opposition leader, as the government warned of a crackdown on protests ahead of a regional summit.

The arrests on Wednesday come as Zimbabwe prepares to host the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit on August 17 and with a precursor trade and development meeting already underway.

Four of the activists were hauled off a plane at the Harare international airport on Wednesday, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said.

Another 14 were arrested in the small northwestern town of Kariba, the rights lawyers said on X.

They were charged Thursday under public disorder laws after taking part in protests demanding the release from detention since June of opposition leader, Jameson Timba.

Zimbabwe’s opposition has faced a wave of arrests after disputed August 2023 elections in which President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ZANU-PF — in power since independence in 1980 — won a majority in parliament.

Timba, the interim head of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), was arrested at his home on June 16 with more than 70 other people. They were accused of participating in an unlawful gathering.

The four activists arrested in Harare were preparing to fly to the western town of Victoria Falls to attend the annual African Philanthropy Conference, ZLHR said.

Among them was teacher’s union leader Robson Chere who was “visibly tortured & in severe pain”, it said.

Also in the group was human rights activist Namatai Kwekweza, recipient of a 2023 prize awarded by the pro-democracy Kofi Annan Foundation.

The foundation said Thursday it had received credible reports that Kwekweza and the others “were held incommunicado and tortured for several hours before being handed over to the police.”

“We call on the authorities to follow due process and ensure that all of Namatai and her colleagues’ civil and political rights are fully respected,” it said on X.

Critics have long accused ZANU-PF of stifling dissent.

Home affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe accused the opposition of pushing for demonstrations around the time of the SADC summit to provoke a “heavy-handed response” to attract international attention.

“The attempts at rendering the country ungovernable will be met with the fitting responses,” he said, warning that “such antics will not be tolerated”.

“Spoilers and anti-development-minded forces shall be dealt with decisively,” Kazembe said.

“We will go after those pushing for lawlessness and allow the law to take its course.”

Commence economic policy review, PDP tells Tinubu

0

The Peoples Democratic Party has called on President Bola Tinubu to address Nigerians about the economic crisis facing the country.

The party also asked the President to urgently review its policies that are negatively impacting the lives of Nigerians.

In a press statement released Thursday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP highlighted the growing unrest and nationwide protests as a direct response to the government’s “arrogance” and “insensitivity” towards the hardships citizens face.

It emphasised that the protests could have been avoided if the APC had heeded previous advice to address the economic challenges and alleviate the populace’s suffering.

The PDP referenced a statement from 6 June 2024, urging President Tinubu to listen to the plight of Nigerians, warning that the public’s reaction to widespread hunger could be severe.

The party also accused the APC of exacerbating the crisis by allegedly hiring hoodlums to incite violence while expressing alarm over the dire economic conditions.

The statement reads in part, “Nigerians can recall that the PDP on several occasions offered advice on the state of the economy to the APC government, the most recent being the PDP’s statement on 6 June 2024, wherein it urged that ‘President Tinubu should listen to the heartbeat of Nigerians. There is hunger and destitution in the land. The reaction of a hungry people is better imagined! Mr. President, please act now.

“Sadly, these counsels did not receive the expected consideration resulting in the current situation. It is alarming that instead of engaging Nigerians and addressing their concerns, the APC allegedly recruited hoodlums to instigate violence so as to justify a clampdown and killing of innocent Nigerians.

“The APC is completely insensitive to the fact that more than 120 million Nigerians have become destitute and can no longer afford their daily meals and other basic necessities of life as the poverty rate soars to over 40 per cent because of the life-discounting policies of the APC administration.”

The PDP pointed to policies such as the abrupt increase in fuel prices and the arbitrary floating of the Naira as major contributors to the economic downturn.

According to the PDP, on several occasions, any people-oriented government ought to have been wary of the suffocating effect of the hasty and ill-implemented twin policies of abrupt increase in the price of petroleum products and arbitrary floating of the Naira without due cushioning measures to ensure the wellbeing of the people.

“The PDP restates that these thoughtless policies of the APC administration are responsible for the crippling of the productive sector with the crashing of the Naira to over N1,500 to a Dollar, fuel soaring to over N1,000 per litre, which in turn triggered high costs of goods and services with over 34 per cent inflation rate, over 40 per cent unemployment rate with the closure of millions of businesses and mass exodus of major multinational companies from our country.

“The APC has plunged Nigeria into a humanitarian crisis where millions of citizens are literally starving and dying of hunger. Sadly, today a bag of rice sells for over N85,000; a bag of beans goes for N150,000; a measure of garri now sells for N1,500 while a measure of cooking oil which sells for N1,200 now sells for N12,000 with prices of all food items increasing daily.

“More provocative is that while Nigerians are crying for food, the APC officials in government are busy looting the national treasury to fund their luxury appetite, including the acquisition of luxury jets, expensive holidays abroad, renovation of official residential mansions and other profligacies, without regard to the feelings and the pains of the majority of Nigerians,” the party stated.

The party added, “Also disturbing is the scandalous revelation that the APC administration is secretly paying a whopping N5.4 trillion as fuel subsidy for 2024 even after the President announced an end to fuel subsidy.”

It called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the nation on policy reviews to curb the growing economic challenges.

“What Nigerians expect at this time is for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to personally address the nation, announce major policy reviews and order an investigation into the alleged looting of subsidy and palliative funds,” the statement added.
