Ogun govt partners group to tackle sexual harassment in tertiary institutions

0

Following the increase in the rate of sexual harassment in Ogun State, the state government has collaborated with a non-governmental organization, Gender Mobile Initiative, to tackle the menace in tertiary institutions.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abayomi Arigbabu made this known during a stakeholders meeting with management of the ministry and heads of tertiary institutions held at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The meeting according to him focused on the state-level adoption of the Model Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy in Tertiary Institutions in Ogun State.
Arigbabu stated that it is intensifying efforts towards improving a system of effective response and accountability in campuses across Nigeria.
The Commissioner commended the Federal Government for considering Ogun as a pioneer state for the step-down of the policy, saying sexual harassment poses a great threat to the future of learners and urged the stakeholders to work together to discover the causes and develop an effective policy for the prevention of the menace.
” It is imperative for heads of institutions and other relevant stakeholders to prioritise the fight against sexual harassment because if it is not curbed, it can lead to psychological problems and sudden death”, he said.
Speaking, Executive Director of Gender Mobile Initiative, Omowunmi Ogunrotimi stated that research conducted in 2018 revealed that over 70 percent of undergraduates had experienced sexual harassment, appealing to the heads of institutions to rise against it before it gets out of hand.
Remarking, Registrar, Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences, Ilese-Ijebu, Mrs Abimbola Oyefesobi and the Dean of Student Affairs, Covenant University, Ota, Mrs. Shola Coker enjoined victims of sexual harassment to speak out, adding that a lot of sensitisation programme should be carried out to control and prevent the case.

Senate to probe $1.5bn spent on Port Harcourt Refinery rehabilitation

0

The Senate has raised concern over the $1.5 billion approved by the Federal Government for the turn-around maintenance of the Port Harcourt Refinery without commensurate results.
The Chairman of the Senate Ad Hoc Committee to Investigate the Alleged Economic Sabotage in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry, Opeyemi Bamidele, raised the concern during an interactive session with stakeholders on Wednesday in Abuja.
Bamidele, who is also the Senate Leader, said it was wrong to treat public companies shabbily while private businesses were thriving.
He recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in 2021 approved the plan to rehabilitate and turn around the refinery with $1.5 billion.
The lawmaker expressed concerns about the dysfunctional state of government-owned refineries despite the billions of dollars spent on turn-around maintenance.
He said: “The federation is undergoing a truly challenging period. The distribution and supply of refined petroleum products have been irregular and problematic in the recent history of our fatherland.
“The long queues at filling stations are a testament to this challenge.
“A situation, whereby we now depend almost entirely on the importation of these products even when we daily supply the global oil market about two percent of its crude oil requirements is worrisome.”
He also decried the importation of hazardous petroleum products and the dumping of substandard diesel into the country.

“The federal government since 1999 has invested billions of dollars to maintain and turn around the state-owned refineries in Kaduna, Port Harcourt, and Warri. But the refineries are not functioning.
“In 2021, specifically, the Federal Executive Council approved $1.5 billion for the turn-around maintenance of the Port Harcourt Refinery. Yet, this investment has not yielded significant returns.
“For us in the Senate, we believe, it is unfair and unpatriotic to treat government businesses or public corporations as an orphan while private businesses are flourishing and thriving,” Bamidele added.
He said the National Assembly was ready to carry out the investigative hearing with all sense of honour and responsibility.
However, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Melee Kyari, refuted claims the company was sabotaging domestic refineries.
He said: “All of us here see what is happening in the media. There is a targeted personal attack on my person, on the institution. And we all know how this works.
“They are deliberate, they are calculated. So, that creates the impression that NNPCL and our leadership are doing anything to create economic sabotage in our country.
“It is far from it. This company has grown. We are proud to say this. From a lost company for 43 years to a profit-making company today.”
Also, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Heineken Lokpobiri, said the oil sector was bedeviled by a lot of misinformation.
“This Senate should do Nigerians a favour by televising the proceedings of this committee live.
“This will do a whole lot of justice not only to the Senate but we in the Executive and key leaders in the sector.
“Because of the fundamental nature of this investigation that has to do with alleged economic sabotage with the importation of substandard products into the country, we urge the Senate to ensure we do a live broadcast,” the minister stated.

Rice War: Edo govt finally admits receiving trucks of rice from Nigerian govt

0

After a series of accusations and counter-accusations, the Edo State Government on Wednesday said it received a few trucks of rice from the federal government.
TVN reports that Chris Nehikhare, Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, disclosed this at a press briefing in Benin City.
The Edo State Government, the state chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Congress, APC had been at loggerheads over the allegedly looted rice at the Urora community in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of the State.
The missing consignment included 30,000 bags of rice from the Dangote Foundation and 20 trucks of rice from the Federal Government.
Nehikhare said the Federal Government also gave directives on how to share the trucks of rice received.
According to him, on the issue of the Federal Government giving us rice, I will tell you, a few months ago, maybe early this year or late last year or mid-this year, they brought a few trucks of rice.
“They (the rice) were distributed according to the formula which they sent to IDP camps, to different people, to orphanage homes. You people should do the investigation.
‘Edo State Government did not touch one of them. It went straight to the local government and then to where it was designed to be given out. Edo State Government does not keep rice”, he said.
The Commissioner, who said the state government does not buy rice, added that the Obaseki-led government has spent N2.2 billion to feed the Edo people.
He said the state government provided N2.2 billion to religious leaders under the leadership of the Christian Association Nigeria, CAN and Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, NSCIA,
He said the money was used to purchase food items such as garri, yam, plantain, and rice among others to give to vulnerable people.
Nehikhare said the food item under the Edo State Food Support Programme was among the deliberate government policies to cushion the adverse effect of the fuel subsidy removal on the people of the state.
He added that the state government also initiated policies such as the provision of free bus service since September last year and the enrollment of over 250,000 people into the State Health Insurance to eradicate poverty in the state.
TVN reported that the Deputy Director-General, Media and Publicity, PDP Governorship Campaign Council, Olu Martins had on Monday claimed that the state government was yet to receive from both the Federal Government and the Dangote Foundation.
Martins, however, described as false and heart-breaking the statement accredited to Senator Adams Oshiomhole, the former Governor of the state that the Dangote Foundation gave 30,000 bags of rice to the state government.

It’s childish, Rep denies securing committee chairmanship with $1.7m bribe

0

The member of the House of Representatives, representing Ideato North and South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, has denied claims of bribing the Speaker, Tajudeen Abass, with $1.7 million to be appointed a committee chairman.

Ugochinyere, who is the chairman of the House Committee on Downstream Petroleum, made his position known in a statement on Wednesday by his Chief of Staff, Ernest Njesi, in Abuja.

The lawmaker described the allegation as “childish,” saying it was aimed to divide the House.

Ugochinyere said, “The allegation is a belated nonsensical, childish, and unprofessional fiction work aimed at creating division in the House to aid some criminal elements who are long overdue for prison to think they can escape justice, which is impossible as the demand for transparency and reform is a task that will be pushed.

“Only a childish mind will believe the poorly scripted work that Speaker was given $1.7m for something that is not worth a penny. We will not dignify the cheap attempt to distract and divert attention from the House investigation of the corruption in our oil industry.”

The statement, however, lauded the Speaker and his deputy, Benjamin Kalu, on their “all-inclusive administration style that has kept the 10th House stable in the last year. ”

He said their “approach to governance has played a pivotal role in fostering a sense of inclusivity within the parliament. They embraced a collaborative approach that transcends party lines, fostering an environment where all voices are not only heard but also valued.”

The Imo State lawmaker noted that the “disjointed attacks and smear campaign” don’t bother him as he remains “focused” in the fight for good governance.

The statement added that “the attempt to drag the Speaker, the deputy speaker, distinguished members, and his name into a Hollywood fiction story is dead on arrival, and all those who aided the stories in one way or another will face the wrath of the law, including other smear campaigns which I will seek for damages for.”

IG task force arrests 17, recover 250,000 litres of crude oil

0

The Inspector-General of Police Special Task Force on Petroleum and Illegal Bunkering has recovered 250,000 litres of crude oil and 350,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil during operations conducted across the country in July.

Additionally, the task force recovered 13 trucks and arrested 17 individuals in various operations nationwide.

Among the 17 suspects were members of a syndicate smuggling petroleum products to neighbouring countries, particularly Cameroon.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the arrests and recoveries were a testament to the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to combating petroleum theft and illegal bunkering.

He vowed that the police, through the task force, would intensify its efforts against oil thieves.

Adejobi said, “In total, 250,000 litres of crude oil and 350,000 litres of AGO were intercepted and recovered. A total of 13 trucks were recovered, and 17 individuals were arrested in various operations across the country.

“These achievements are a testament to the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to combating petroleum theft and illegal bunkering. We will continue to intensify our efforts to ensure the security and integrity of our nation’s petroleum resources.”

In one of the arrests, Adejobi said the task force in Adamawa on July 13 intercepted three Toyota Corolla cars laden with 130 jerry cans of 25 litres each, filled with Premium Motor Spirit.

He explained, “On July 13, 2024, operatives of the task force in Adamawa intercepted three Toyota Corolla cars loaded with 130 jerry cans of 25-litre capacity, filled with a petroleum product suspected to be Premium Motor Spirit.

“One of the cars was carrying 50 jerry cans, while the other two carried 40 jerry cans each, making a total of 130 jerry cans. The vehicles and exhibits have been impounded at the Girei Divisional Police Headquarters in Adamawa State, and the suspects have been taken into custody. Preliminary investigation revealed that the culprits are part of an organised criminal syndicate specialising in smuggling petroleum products into neighbouring Cameroon.”

Adejobi also mentioned that on July 16, a truck laden with about 45,000 litres of petroleum product, suspected to be crude oil obtained through illicit means, was intercepted at the Igwuruta area of Rivers State.

“Analysis conducted on the product revealed it is crude oil, confirming our suspicion that it was sourced from theft through tampering with an oil pipeline. The court has been approached with a Motion for Interim Forfeiture via Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1072/2024,” he added.

He stated that during the investigation, one Eze Great claimed ownership of the product but could not provide a satisfactory explanation for how he obtained the crude oil.

“In the course of the investigation, one Chief Eze Great appeared and claimed ownership of the product. He has made statements under caution but could not offer a satisfactory explanation as to how he acquired the crude oil. Relevant charges will soon be filed,” he said.

The commander of the task force, Bayo Sulaiman, also stated that all 17 suspects have been charged, and their vehicles, trucks, and other exhibits have been forfeited to the government.

‘Security challenges in Delta just a phase, will soon pass’ – Oborevwori

0

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori has called for more prayers to enable his administration resolve some of the intractable challenges bedeviling the state.
The Governor disclosed this when he received on a courtesy visit, the State Executive of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, led by the State Chairman, Bishop Kingsley Enakhireri at the Government House, Asaba, on Wednesday, assuring that his administration is committed to the security of lives and property in the state.
While noting that the security challenges in the state are just a phase and that they would come and go, he said the state was peaceful despite a few security challenges in some parts of the state.

“On the issue of security, we are doing our best. We want to assure Deltans that this is just a phase and it will come and go. Continue to pray for us while we will continue to serve the people.”
“In section 14(2b) of the 1999 constitution, states that, ‘the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government’ and we are doing that.
On the ongoing protests in the country, Governor Oborevwori flayed a section of the opposition for trying to take credit for the peaceful disposition of protesters in the state, adding that it was a collective effort of all stakeholders, especially prayers of the church.
“I want to thank the PFN for the role it played at this trying time of a national protest. We can see that the state is peaceful. People were expecting violence like the way it was during ENDSARS.
“I was watching one of the TV stations when somebody said that they made the peaceful ambience in Delta State during this period of national protest possible. How? When people talk at times, they talk out of ignorance.
Our fathers of faith prayed and I have been in this state since, I didn’t go out of the state, to monitor the protest and we are monitoring it.
“The Civil Society organisations and other groups understand and said this time, they are not going to protest. They know that if they go into it people will hijack it. So, people should not come to take glory. We return the glory to God Almighty.
“Some of these people talking do not even stay in the state, they don’t know what is happening,” the governor added.
Earlier, Bishop Enakhireri said they visited to pledge their unalloyed and unflinching support to the administration of Governor Oborevwori and thanked him for his wisdom in managing the affairs of the state, particularly in handling the ongoing national protests in the country.
