Withdrawal of Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso from ECOWAS threatens regional security — Commissioner

0

The Economic Community of West African States Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, has stated that the withdrawal of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso from the regional bloc will lead to unintended security consequences.

In January, the three military-led West African nations announced their immediate withdrawal from ECOWAS, accusing the organisation of becoming a threat to its member states.

Speaking at the 42nd ordinary session of the Committee of ECOWAS Chiefs of Defence Staff in Abuja on Wednesday,
Musah stressed that their withdrawal would inevitably undermine coordination and cooperation in combating terrorism, human trafficking, and transnational organised crime.

He said, “The exit of these countries from ECOWAS after almost five decades of diplomatic, political, and security cooperation will eventually generate unintended consequences on the security front.

“Such a withdrawal will inevitably undermine coordination and cooperation in the fight against terrorism, human trafficking, and transnational organised crime in our region. This situation compels this gathering to also focus deliberations on reassessing our peace and security strategies moving forward.”

Musah called on the ECOWAS Defence Chiefs to finalise the planning for the deployment to stabilise Sierra Leone and the operationalisation of the ECOWAS Logistics Depot at Lungi in the Republic of Sierra Leone.

He added, “This meeting will also be updated on progress in the operationalisation of the ECOWAS Logistics Depot at Lungi in the Republic of Sierra Leone, among other initiatives.”

The Nigerian Minister of Defence, Mohammad Badaru, called for the development of new military strategies to ensure peace and stability in the region.

He said, “As we develop new military strategies and coordinate regional security, we must ensure peace, stability, and effective responses to emerging threats. Your capacity to devise solutions is more essential than ever as we strive to protect our security and uphold regional peace, stability, and security, as inclusively stated under the fundamental principles of the Air Force.”

He also urged the regional defence chiefs to reflect deeply on the rapidly evolving and complex security situation in West Africa.

He said, “The threats we face are multi-faceted, ranging from violence, terrorism, and insurgency to organised crime and piracy.

“As the vanguard of our peace and security efforts, your strategies, decisions, and actions are vital in determining our security landscape and architecture.”

Badaru also called for a new mechanism to curb the proliferation of small arms in the region, adding that the influx had reached an alarming level.

He said, “The illicit movement of small arms and light weapons in our region has reached alarming levels. There is a need for the development of new mechanisms to complement the existing Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons to effectively prevent further proliferation of these weapons.”

Police nab inter-state armed robbery gang in Osun

0

The Osun State Police Command on Wednesday paraded members of an inter-state armed robbery gang based in Lagos State but carrying out robbery operations in the state.

One of those arrested, Solomon Michael, while responding to questions from According Metro, admitted participating in three different robbery operations with the gang, serving as the driver of the group.

Michael admitted to having had an accident while returning from a robbery operation in Ede.

The suspect further said he used to work as a truck driver before an issue involving him and his employer landed him in Kirikiri Custodial Centre, Lagos.

There, he met Sunday Felix, who initiated him fully into armed robbery.

Earlier, while presenting the suspects to journalists at the command headquarters in Osogbo, the state Police/Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, said the gang had carried out many robbery operations in Ede before they were arrested.

According to her, on April 7,  2024, a complainant had reported at ‘B’ Division Ede, that four armed robbery gangs stormed his house located at Akankan Area, Ede, and dispossessed him and other occupants of items such as iPhone 13 Promax, Iphone 7plus, Iphone 6S, clothes, and other property valued N4.9 million.

Opalola also disclosed that the same gang had on April 14, 2024, travelling in a Toyota Corolla car, stormed a house located in Fiwasaye Agbale Area, Ede, and kidnapped a resident after stealing 3 HP laptop computer sets belonging to the occupants of the building.

“The victim was not released until 4:30 am after collecting the sum of one hundred and twenty-three thousand naira (#123,000) ransom which was transferred to Account No. 2022108661 belonging to one of the armed robbers, Solomon Michael,” she said.

During the operation, one of the armed robbers named Sunday Felix fired on the complainant’s brother; Ali Monday Segun on his right leg.

The victim was rushed to the Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife where the ammunition was removed after operation.

Also paraded was Tajudeen Abiola, who specialises in duping Point of Sale operators, using fake credit alerts.

Opalola said all the suspects would be arraigned before court after the completion of an investigation into their cases, adding that efforts would also be geared towards arresting fleeing suspects mentioned in connection to crimes in the state.

Five children die after eating farm food in Nasarawa

0

There is palpable fear in the Gidinye community of Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State following the death of five children within 24 hours.

Gidinye, one of the communities in the Jenkwe Development Area of the LG houses thousands of able-bodied men and women including children.

Findings by our correspondent revealed that the children who are between the ages of five, six, seven, and 15, died after complaining of stomach aches, vomiting, and purging on Monday and Tuesday.

Speaking on the incident on Wednesday, the Publicity Secretary of the Migili Youth Association, Samuel Akala, said the children had left home alongside their parents to their farms close to the Keana LG when they suddenly fell ill.

He, therefore appealed to the Nasarawa State Government and all the relevant authorities to swiftly look into the matter to contain the situation and save the lives of other children in the area.

He said, “We lost the five children in less than 24 hours in the same community. The children left home for the farm. While on the farm, one of them started complaining of stomach ache and started vomiting and purging at the same time.

“Within a short time, he began to have difficulty with his breathing, and when he was rushed home, he died. The other children had similar symptoms and died.

“The case is still on the increase and we are yet to discover the cause of their deaths.

“The circumstances that resulted in the sudden death of these children call for forensic findings. I suggest that the Center for Disease Control and the Primary Healthcare Development Agency should be invited to carry out disease surveillance in communities around Obi and Keana LGAs where there are reported cases of acute diarrhoea, vomiting, and death of children in the past few days.”

While emphasising that the community was interested in knowing the actual causes of the untimely death of the five children, Akala appealed to the authorities to make haste in finding a solution to the matter to prevent the unknown disease from affecting a wide range of the populations in the area.

Confirming the incident to our correspondent in Lafia on Wednesday, the State Epidemiologist, Dr Grace Tsakpa, said healthcare workers had been deployed to the community to take samples of the surviving family members.

While noting that the results from the samples collected were yet to be released, Dr Tsakpa explained that from her observations, the cause of their deaths could be related to food poisoning because the ailments started immediately after they finished eating their meal on the farm.

She said, “For now, we have taken samples from the other family members, but our suspicion is going towards food poisoning. This is because the whole incident happened after they ate food at the farm.

“The five children belong to two brothers. The family (parents and children) went to the farm, cooked there, and ate. It was on the farm that one of the children started complaining of abdominal pains, and he later died. The other four children also died after developing symptoms.”

The State Epidemiologist further commiserated with both families for the untimely death of their children and assured them that she and her team would leave no stone unturned to unravel the actual cause of the children’s death.

Nigerian Senate probes $1.5bn spent on Port Harcourt Refinery rehabilitation

0

The Senate has raised concerns over 1.5 billion dollars approved in 2021 for the turn-around maintenance of the Port Harcourt Refinery with little or no result.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Chairman of the Senate Ad Hoc Committee to Investigate the Alleged Economic Sabotage in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry, raised the concern during an interactive session with stakeholders on Wednesday, in Abuja.
Bamidele, who is also the Senate Leader, said it was unfair and wrong to treat public companies shabbily while private businesses were flourishing and thriving.
He recalled that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had approved the plan by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to rehabilitate and turn around the Port Harcourt Refinery with 1.5 billion dollars.
Bamidele expressed concerns about the dysfunctional state of government-owned refineries despite billions of dollars spent on turn-around maintenance.
“The federation is undergoing a truly challenging period. The distribution and supply of refined petroleum products have been irregular and problematic in the recent history of our fatherland.
“The long queues at filling stations are obviously a testament to this challenge.
“A situation whereby we now depend almost entirely on the importation of these products even when we daily supply the global oil market about two per cent of its crude oil requirements is worrisome,” he said.
He said also of serious concern was the importation of hazardous petroleum products and dumping of substandard diesel into the country.
Under different administrations since 1999, Bamidele observed that the federal government “has invested billions of dollars to maintain and turn around the state-owned refineries in Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Warri. But the refineries are not functioning.

DSS detains seven Polish nationals in Kano

0

The Department of State Services is investigating the alleged involvement of seven Polish nationals in the nationwide protests against hunger and hardship in Kano State.

The detainees, who were arrested on Tuesday in Kano, are being investigated.

The nationwide protest, which commenced on Thursday, August 1, was in response to the hardship being experienced by citizens in the country.

The spokesperson for the DSS, Peter Afunanya, confirmed the arrests on Wednesday while explaining that the action was part of routine security enforcement rather than a targeted effort against Polish citizens.

Afunanya stated this while responding to questions during a briefing with the Diplomatic Corps on Wednesday in Abuja, affirming that the DSS actions were conducted in line with democratic principles and respect for human rights.

“Seven persons were picked up from Kano because of where they were found during the protest and display of foreign flag in Kano two days ago.

“As a responsible security organisation, we owe it an obligation to do some verification and ascertain basic reasons and circumstances for some cases.

“They were picked by security enforcement because of where they were when the incident happened. It is not a targeted operation on behalf of the Director-General of DSS and Nigeria,” the spokesperson explained.

He also pleaded for cooperation in maintaining global stability, urging other nations not to allow their citizens to be used as instruments for undermining domestic peace in any country.

Afunanya added, “As the foremost domestic security organisation, we believe we have to work in sync with all of you who are men of goodwill.

“Our operations must be governed by democratic principles and protocol that emphasise freedom and human rights, and of course intelligence and security governance. We obey all of these whether we are dealing with Nigerians or foreigners.

“But we have a plea. In the course of the discharging of our duty, we also see that some Nigerians definitely would want to use foreign lands as lunch pads to attack domestic peace and stability. We plead that you do not offer your country to some person who may be deviant or have a terrorist inclination in today’s global pursuit. If anything happens in a country, it affects the others.”

He also noted that “Nigeria is a country with a large population and I believe that the support other countries will give will help us.”
