0

The Zamfara State Police Command, in furtherance of its sustained efforts at protecting lives and property in the state, has recorded another operational success with the successful foiling of a bandit attack in Zurmi and the prompt clearance of a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) along the Gurusu–Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar made this known in a statement made available to journalists in Gusau, the state capital.

The statement said on August 12, 2026 at about 7.00am, a report was received from a Good Samaritan at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Zurmi that members of the community would embark on a tree-planting exercise at the Zurmi Muslims’ Praying Ground along Rukudawa Road.

In response, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) dispatched a patrol team to offer security cover for the exercise.

It was learnt that at about 10:30 a.m, while the program was ongoing, the armed bandits took advantage of the situation, and launched a surprise attack on the security personnel, firing sporadically.

Security personnel quickly took cover and responded decisively engaging the attackers in a gun battle. The bandits were driven back into a nearby forest by the continued response.

Investigators found evidence at the scene, including large amounts of blood from where the attackers had been, suggesting that some of the bandits may have been shot. It was believed that the bandits had retired with the corpses of their dead comrades.
The assault was successfully repelled with no casualties among the security personnel or civilians present at the location.

On the same date, 12 August 2026, at about 9:30 a.m., a suspected IED exploded along the Gurusu–Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area.

The explosive device was suspected to have been planted by armed bandits on the route and later detonated, causing panic among residents and road users.

Luckily, no one was killed or injured in the blast.

On receipt of the report, the Zamfara State Police Command immediately dispatched its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, along with personnel of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to the scene.

The EOD team did a thorough sweep of the area and made the scene safe for commuters and other road users.

Meanwhile joint security patrols continue along the route and in the surrounding areas to prevent further attacks, identify potential explosive threats and secure the movement of residents and commuters.

The command called on members of the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious movements, abandoned objects or any other security concerns to the nearest police formation.

PSG Secure 2-1 Victory Over Aston Villa to Retain UEFA Super Cup

0

Paris Saint-Germain won the UEFA Super Cup for the second time by beating Aston Villa 2-1 to become one of the few clubs to do so.

Paris Saint-Germain defeat Aston Villa with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué scoring.

Defending Champions League winners PSG went ahead in the 20th minute with a stunning strike from Kvaratskhelia but Brian Madjo leveled on the stroke of half-time

Doue put the French side back in front on the hour and one minute and Europa League winners Villa were unable to grab a point in a match officiated by Somalian referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan who was denied entry to the United States and unable to take part in the World Cup.

“We are always hungry, we want more,” Doue told TNT Sports.

“I said after the Champions League final that we wanted more. We have ambitions, we are a young team we want to win everything again this season.”

PSG beats Tottenham on penalties to claim UEFA Super Cup

Despite many of his squad only just returning from the World Cup, PSG manager Luis Enrique named a formidable team, with nine starters from the side which won the Champions League final.

PSG took a while to find their groove, but when they did Kvaratskhelia danced thru the Villa defense on more than one occasion before giving his side the lead.

Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot saved from Doue but moments later, Doue played a pass to Kvaratskhelia just inside the area and the winger shimmied past defender Matty Cash before unleashing an unstoppable shot.

Madjo, making his Villa debut, had opportunities to equalize but headed two wide and another shot was pushed wide by the goalkeeper.

Persistence paid off for the 17-year-old forward seconds before the interval. John McGinn floated a ball toward the six-yard box and Madjo, under pressure from Willian Pacho, volleyed to the roof of the net.

Madjo, who was signed from Metz in January but only became eligible to play last week after CAS upheld Villa’s appeal against a FIFA ruling, became the youngest ever scorer in the UEFA Super Cup with his equalizer.

Luis Enrique replaced Ousmane Dembele with new signing Maghnes Akliouche at the start of the second half, but it was Villa who created the first opportunity as Matvey Safonov palmed away McGinn’s shot from the edge of the area.

Doue’s winner came when he raced on to a thru ball from Dembele and curled his shot into the far corner, the offside flag going up but a VAR check giving the goal.

Holders Villa had a lot of the ball late on but PSG defended magnificently to become only the third side to retain the trophy after AC Milan and Real Madrid.

Luis Enrique has won 13 trophies since joining PSG in 2023, while Villa boss Unai Emery is without a win from his four matches in the UEFA Super Cup.

Last year they beat Tottenham Hotspur on penalties to win the French Super Cup, and PSG will defend that title when they face Lens on Sunday.

Atiku’s Aide Claims El-Rufai Has Spent 178 Days in Detention Over Tinubu Rift

0

Paul Ibe, media aide to former Vise President Atiku Abubakar, has again raised the alarm over the plight of former Kaduna governor, Nasir El-Rufai, stating that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain has spent 178 days in detention.

Ibe stated in an X post on Thursday that el-Rufai has been politically persecuted for daring to pull away from President Bola Tinubu whom he supported in the 2023 polls.

He also alleged double standards in the handling of political cases, pointing to embattled Senator Francis Fadahunsi who, he said, is “walking freely and yet-to-be arrested after calling on members of his own party to kill members of the Accord.”

He noted that several chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) facing corruption allegations similar to El-Rufai’s were currently walking free and posted photos of ex-governors Yahaya Bello and Ifeanyi Okowa.

“Even as el-Rufai is being detained, high profile members of Tinubu’s APC who are standing trial for corruption have been discharged and are running for election.

“What other evidence do you need to prove that Tinubu is fighting war against the OPPOSITION and not CORRUPTION,” he added.

This is not the first time that Ibe has commented on the length of detention of el-Rufai.

“Political persecution under the cover of a sham legal trial,” he said, citing the fact that the former governor had been detained for 144 days as of July 9.

Earlier, he had put the figure at 126 days, saying the Tinubu-led APC administration was “harassing and intimidating el-Rufai for having parted ways with the APC.

“Tinubu is allegedly bent on keeping him till after the 2027 elections,” Ibe had also alleged, describing the bail conditions granted el-Rufai as “too punitive and meant to keep him perpetually in detention”.

El-Rufai also faces separate criminal trials initiated by the Federal Government.

He is being prosecuted in Abuja by the Department of State Services (DSS) on charges of alleged phone wire-tapping and cybercrimes and by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) on charges of financial fraud and money laundering involving multi-billion naira.

He has been held in detention since February 18.

EFCC Recovers N115bn in Unpaid Levies Linked to NDDC, Oil Companies

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered over N115 billion in outstanding statutory levies owed to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) by oil companies operating in the Niger Delta.

The disclosure was made by an EFCC official, Francis Oka-Phillips Usani, when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Public Accounts investigating findings in the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) 2021-2023 Oil and Gas Sector Audit Report.

Identified liabilities include outstanding three per cent statutory levies owed to the NDDC by oil companies operating in the Niger Delta to the tune of N76.883 billion and $81.076 million, Usani said.

He said the EFCC investigated 43 oil companies based on the findings, out of which 24 were found to have outstanding liabilities, while the remaining 19 were cleared.

He said some of the affected companies paid their outstanding liabilities directly to the NDDC after the investigation and pressure mounted by the EFCC.

He said the direct payments stood at N6.709 billion and $16.994 million.

EFCC had also released N73.373 billion and $67.070 million recovered on behalf of the NDDC to the commission, while N3.510 billion and $14.005 million were still with the EFCC recovery account, Usani said.

He said the investigation was mainly on the three per cent statutory levies payable to the NDDC which were not paid as revealed in the NEITI audit report.

The EFCC representative however said the investigation did not rule out the existence of other unpaid statutory obligations and taxes owed the Federal Government.

But the Senate committee refused to grant TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited the opportunity to answer questions raised against the company in the audit report, citing poor representation at the hearing.

The committee therefore summoned the Managing Director of TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited to appear before it in person next week.

It also afforded the managing directors of South Atlantic Petroleum Limited, Oando Oil Limited, Famfa Oil Limited and Green Energy International Limited one last opportunity to appear before the panel physically.

The committee chairman, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo said the investigation will continue on Thursday.

The Senate’s ongoing investigation is centered on the findings and recommendations of the NEITI 2021–2023 Oil and Gas Sector Audit Report, particularly the issues relating to the non-payment of statutory dues and other financial obligations in the extractive industry.

Karoline Leavitt Explains Why She Resigned as White House Press Secretary

0

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said she will leave the Trump administration at the end of August, to spend more time with her two young kids.

Leavitt, 28, the youngest person to serve as White House press secretary, called her decision “bittersweet” in a post on social media Wednesday, shortly after President Donald Trump announced her departure.

The announcement came months after Leavitt returned to the White House briefing room after the birth of her second child, a daughter, Viviana, in May. She has a son who is two years old as well.

Leavitt said she decided to leave because the demands of being press secretary had become hard to balance with her role as a mom.

“The truth is, since returning to the White House following the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy and attention that the White House Press Secretary is required to give, and that is why I ultimately have made the bittersweet decision to depart the White House and embark on a new chapter in my life,” she wrote.

Trump did not name a replacement for the high-profile post but said Leavitt would remain in his political orbit.

“Karoline will now be one of my top outside advisors, and an influential voice within the Republican Party, as we work to defy History, and win the Midterm Elections, conclusively,” Trump said in his own social media post.

Leavitt, who was a spokesman for MAGA Inc., the pro-Trump super PAC, and later worked on Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.

During her political career, she also ran unsuccessfully for Congress in New Hampshire in 2022. She won the Republican primary in a crowded field of 10 candidates but lost the general election to Democratic incumbent Chris Pappas.

Leavitt previously worked in the White House press office during Trump’s first term, and then served as communications director to New York Republican Representative Elise Stefanik.

Leavitt held fewer formal briefings during her tenure as press secretary than some of her predecessors.

During official events and overseas trips Trump often spoke directly to reporters, and Leavitt appeared frequently on Fox News and other conservative media to defend the administration’s policies and attack Democrats and the mainstream press.

Trump’s first administration featured several high-profile press secretaries, such as Sean Spicer and Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who became known for their combative exchanges with reporters.

Stephanie Grisham never held a formal White House briefing, while Kayleigh McEnany routinely used briefings to go after the news media.

Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor popularly known as Mama G has said she believes that God has given her a special gift to portray witches, wicked mothers-in-law and other villains convincingly in movies.

She said this while speaking on her long-standing career playing such roles in Nollywood productions during a livestreamed interview with content creator Carter Efe.

Ozokwor said as a person she is not in support of evil or injustice but commits 100 per cent to any negative role given her to deliver it convincingly and pass moral lessons to viewers.

“I think God put me in that niche. I hate all sickness, Because I hate injustice, War and rancor. “When you give me those roles, I try to bring everything to them,” she said.

She says her negative characters are meant to make people question the effects of their actions and see the importance of doing right.

“If you are taking part in any of them, you have to be careful and know the end thereof, because the end justifies the means.

“Know what’s going to happen to you if you live a terrible life. And know what you’ll get if you’re a good person,” she said.

Afrobeats singer David Adeleke popularly called Davido has reacted to the presence of top All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders and governors in Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The APC leaders and some governors were said to have descended on Osogbo, the state capital, on Wednesday for the party’s last mega rally as it steps up its campaign to wrest the state from the PDP.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda and more than 10 governors elected on the platform of the ruling party attended the meeting.

Among those who arrived in Osogbo were the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and the Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani.

State Police: Presidency Announces Deadline for Public Input

0

The Presidency has announced that public submissions on the proposed National Policing Bill will close at 5pm on Thursday, August 13, 2026, as consultations continue over the planned establishment of state police.

It was reported that the Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this on Wednesday.

Gbajabiamila said the consultation was designed to draw on the experiences and professional expertise of Nigerians, particularly on questions surrounding political interference, police misconduct, independent oversight and intelligence-sharing between federal and state police services.

He stressed that the public consultation would not replace the constitutional role of the National Assembly, which would still have the power to scrutinise, amend, reject or pass the Bill when it is formally transmitted.

Gbajabiamila said the debate over state police should not be reduced to a choice between more effective local policing and protection against political abuse.

“For too long, the debate has been framed as a choice between effective local policing and protection from political abuse. Nigeria needs both,” he said.

“We can bring policing closer to the people while building strong national standards, independent oversight and firm safeguards for every citizen.”

He urged Nigerians to submit proposals on how police services could be insulated from political interference, who should investigate serious misconduct and how federal and state formations should share intelligence across jurisdictional boundaries.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives acknowledged concerns that governors could misuse state police against political opponents, protesters, journalists and minority communities.

He said such fears were legitimate and must be addressed in the design of the law.

“Proximity does not guarantee justice. The concern that governors might use state police against political opponents, minority communities or dissenting voices is serious and must be answered in the design of the law,” Gbajabiamila said.

According to him, state police services should exercise lawful authority within their jurisdictions while remaining subject to the Constitution, human rights standards and the rule of law.

“The law must protect citizens regardless of who holds office. It must protect opposition parties, peaceful protesters, journalists and minority communities,” he added.

“It must make unlawful orders easier to resist, misconduct easier to investigate and political interference harder to hide.”

Gbajabiamila said the proposed National Policing Bill would establish minimum standards covering recruitment, vetting, training, remuneration, pensions, equipment and professional conduct.

It would also contain provisions on use of force, complaints, discipline, independent oversight, intelligence sharing and cooperation between federal and state police services.

He said proper recruitment, training, equipment and supervision would be necessary to ensure that state police formations operated professionally.

Citizens, he added, must also have access to credible complaint and accountability mechanisms.

Gbajabiamila explained that Section 214 of the Constitution currently provides for only one police force, the Nigeria Police Force. Consequently, establishing state police would require a constitutional amendment.

He said both chambers of the National Assembly had already approved proposed constitutional changes providing for a Federal Police Service and State Police Services, but stressed that the process was not yet complete.

The amendments would still have to be transmitted to the 36 state Houses of Assembly and secure the approval of at least 24 before being sent to the President for assent. Until that process is completed, he said, state police remained only a proposal.

Gbajabiamila also clarified that passage of the constitutional amendment and the National Policing Bill would not automatically create police services in every state.

“Each state that chooses to establish a service will still need its own enabling law, institutions and funding,” he said.

“It must also meet the national conditions for operation before its officers can begin policing.”

States that are not ready to establish their own police services, he added, would continue to be served by the Nigeria Police Force.
