Anambra Police Intensifies Operational Monitoring Across The State

0

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama has instituted a strategic monitoring mechanism thru the Command’s Operational Control Rooms to closely monitor checkpoints, patrol teams and other operational activities across the State.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening effective policing, accountability and professionalism, following feedback received during the recent Anambra Security Stakeholders’ Interactive Sessions across the three Senatorial Districts.

It will also end extortion, harassment and other abuses against the public by police personnel.

The Command’s Operational Control Rooms, under the new strategy, will have a tighter grip on patrol formations and checkpoints while Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Team Commanders will be expected to account for activities of personnel posted in strategic locations.

Reports and complaints concerning misconduct, extortion or any other unprofessional conduct will be received, monitored and escalated for appropriate action in a timely manner.

“The command will continue to provide effective security and to protect lives and property of the Anambra residents, no police officer will be allowed to abuse the responsibility given him or her by the Nigeria Police Force to exploit members of the public.

“Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Team Commanders will ensure strict compliance of the directive, any personnel found engaging in extortion or other forms of misconduct will face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the law and established regulations,” he explained

The Command, therefore, calls on the people and other members of the public to support this initiative by reporting incidents of extortion, harassment or other unprofessional conduct thru the Command’s established communication channels including the Operational Control Room on 07039194332 or the Police Public Relations Officer on 08039334002 as well as the dedicated WhatsApp number of the Commissioner of the Police 09169531886

The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to professional, people-oriented and accountable policing and assured members of the public that credible complaints will be attended to promptly and appropriate action will be taken.

Indonesia Earthquake: Death Toll Rises After Powerful 7.7-Magnitude Quake

0

At least 47 people have died after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake, and dozens of aftershocks hit off eastern Indonesia on Saturday, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in its latest statement.

Tsunami waves of less than 1 meter (3 feet) were registered in several parts of the Southeast Asian country after the early-morning quake. The tsunami warning was lifted about three hours later.

Earlier, rescuers found 20 dead, six injured and two people trapped under rubble in the port town of Maumere, said Fathur Rahman, head of the city’s rescue agency.

Maumere is the principal town in Sikka Regency on Flores Island in eastern Indonesia.

Around 2,000 people in Nagekeo were evacuated and there were reports of damage to homes, warehouses and government buildings, the BNPB said. Power outages and traffic congestion were also reported in parts of the regency, authorities said.

East Nusa Tenggara Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena told a press conference that at least five people died when buildings collapsed while they were sleeping.

Preliminary data from BNPB showed 157 homes were heavily damaged, 41 moderately damaged and 148 lightly damaged. Damage was also reported at 87 schools, 18 health facilities, five places of worship, and six office buildings, along with other infrastructure.

The first quake was recorded at 4.58 a.m. (2158 GMT) at a depth of 15 km (9 miles) by Indonesian geophysics agency BMKG, which also recorded several aftershocks.

The same area was hit by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake in 1992 that caused widespread destruction, the BMKG said.

Indonesia lies on the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, an active seismic belt where tectonic plates converge causing frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake and tsunami struck the city of Palu on the island of Sulawesi in 2018, killing more than 4,000 people.

Osun Election Results: INEC Uploads Over 40% on IReV Portal

0

Just hours after the Osun State governorship election ended, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has posted about 40 percent of the results on its Result Viewing Portal (IREV).

The portal shows that 1,517 results submitted out of 3,763 have been uploaded so far, Naija News reports.

According to the portal, so far, the results uploaded are 40.31 per cent.

A few minutes after the delay in uploading results was queried by award-winning singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, INEC started the uploading.

In a series of posts on his official 𝕏 handle on Saturday, the Nigerian singer called on the electoral body to ensure transparency and timely update the public on the results of the election.

“INEC, it is now 2:33 p.m. and no result has been uploaded to the IReV portal,” Davido wrote. What’s the hold-up? Nigerians deserve timely and transparent updates”.

In a bid to ensure transparency, Davido charged voters to remain at their polling units until their results are uploaded to the IReV portal and ensure that figures are entered on the electronic EC8A result form.

“Ensure your polling unit results are uploaded on IReV in your presence and ensure the figures are entered on eEC8A (electronic EC8A)”. “Bumper to bumper we will follow our votes!”

Army Repels ISWAP Attack From Multiple Fronts in Biu

0

The Nigerian Army has repelled a coordinated ISWAP assault on a Nigerian Army forward base in Borno State. Troops defeated attackers advancing from two directions, and neutralized several terrorists.

Weapons and other combat equipment were also recovered by the Army Officers, and there were no casualties among their ranks.

This was stated in a statement by the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni.

The attempted attack on Forward Operating Base Mandaragirau in Biu Local Government Area began at about 02:00 hours on 15 August when ISWAP terrorists launched a simultaneous attack on the base from two fronts, Capt. Goni said.

Early warning and surveillance systems detected the advancing fighters and enabled troops to send a combat team to intercept one axis before the attackers could arrive at the position.

“The engagement that followed resulted in a heavy exchange of fire during which the troops defeated the attacking group.

A second group attempted to go around the intercepting force and get into the base but met with equally stiff resistance and was compelled to fall back under continued fire. Troops immediately pursued the retreating terrorists, exploiting both the contact area and their withdrawal routes. Several terrorists were neutralized and troops recovered AK-47 rifles with loaded magazines, a rocket propelled grenade launcher with bombs and chargers, a camcorder and other combat enabling equipment.

The statement also said that subsequent to the engagement, surveillance footage provided further evidence of the impact of the engagement, showing terrorists dragging away several bodies of their colleagues toward the Timbuktu Triangle. There were no casualties among the Nigerian troops in the operation.

“The result is important beyond the immediate defense of the Mandaragirau position. “The ability to detect the assault prior to infiltration, engage the attackers on separate axes, and then pursue them after their withdrawal demonstrates the value of layered surveillance, rapid tactical response and aggressive exploitation in protecting forward operating bases from complex terrorist attacks.”

The Theater Command commended the troops of 162 Amphibious Battalion for their courage, professionalism and tactical proficiency, while reiterating its resolve to dominate the battlespace and sustain operations toward restoring lasting peace and security in the Northeast.

‘Only People Who Are Mentally Secure Will Be Attracted To Me’ – Skit Maker, Mummy Wa

0

Kemi Ikuseedun aka Mummy Wa, a Nigerian content creator cum Nollywood actress, has responded to the insinuation that her being a strong and independent woman affects her relationships.

Mummy Wa in an interview with Punch said she does not entertain people who feel intimidated by strong women, according to reports.

“I would say no because only mentally secure people will be attracted to me. I’m not going to put up with people intimidated by strong women. “I attract men who like strong women.

Ikuseedun said one of the hardest things about being a creative is consistency, particularly when juggling multiple projects and ideas.

“The hardest part for me is showing up and being consistent amidst other things one is doing,” she said. There’s so many projects and ideas so in the midst of all these one has to consistently show up for the things one has already done and it’s crazy. “Just showing up, being better than your version of yesterday, consistently.”

She said the biggest challenge facing creatives in Nigeria is finance. “You need money to bring your ideas to life,” she stressed.

“Yeah, I think money is a problem for everybody in Nigeria,” she said. I think the biggest challenge, especially in the entertainment industry, is the financial part of it. Sometimes it’s the money that’s just not there to bring the passion, creativity and ideas to life. “Sometimes one asks himself, ‘Should I keep on doing what I like to do or go for something else that will bring in so much money and one won’t have to stress oneself so much?’”

NSIB Seeks Faster Accident Reports, Stronger Safety Measures

0

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) is taking steps to enhance the speed and effectiveness of accident investigations thru specialized manpower, modern equipment and stronger collaboration with relevant agencies.

This was revealed by the Director-General of the Bureau, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., at a virtual media interaction on the activities, projects and policy initiatives of the NSIB in the first half of 2026.

Badeh said the Bureau intended to acquire breathalyzers and internationally certified testing kits to enhance preliminary testing at accident scenes, especially in aviation investigation.

He said the equipment would allow investigators to carry out initial testing before samples were sent to laboratories for further analysis.

He stressed that NSIB investigations were non-punitive and aimed at establishing the facts, identifying the contributing factors and making safety recommendations to prevent similar accidents.

Badeh said on maritime investigations, the Bureau had made significant progress following the deployment of dedicated maritime investigators and specialized investigative software.

He said that several maritime reports were at the stakeholder-review stage, and about four are ready for release after the relevant stakeholders submit their comments.

The development had helped overcome some of the delays that occurred when aviation investigators were largely responsible for maritime investigations, he said.

But Badeh said the Bureau was still hampered by inadequate funding and lack of specialized equipment.

He said the lack of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) was a big gap, because such equipment was needed to help investigators recover evidence and bodies from sunken ships, especially in waterways with poor underwater visibility.

NSIB’s growing responsibilities for aviation, rail and maritime transport were largely funded by aviation-related revenue, putting pressure on its resources and contributing to budget constraints.

Badeh said the repositioning of NSIB to the Presidency thru the Office of the National Security Adviser would help address some of its institutional and funding challenges.

He said the NSIB currently had about 407 employes but needed more people with specialized expertise in aviation, maritime and rail accident investigation.

He said the Bureau was focusing on training and upskilling existing staff, while plans to recruit additional specialists would depend on available funding and other institutional considerations.

Badeh said the Bureau was deepening cooperation with regulatory and law-enforcement agencies, emphasizing that NSIB was set up to complement their work rather than compete or replace them.

He said the Bureau was collaborating with agencies such as the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and railroad authorities to enhance safety within the country’s transport system.

He said the Bureau was engaged in a formal Memorandum of Understanding with NIWA in a bid to reduce accidents and fatalities on Nigeria’s inland waterways.

Regarding the overall state of transport safety, Badeh stated that he was not fully pleased with recent developments in aviation, especially after the VMO Aero and Enugu Air incidents which are still under investigation.

He did say, however, that road safety had improved and there were fewer major incidents involving tankers.

He added that the NSIB would continue to strengthen its technical capacity, improve access to modern investigative equipment and deepen collaboration with interested parties to make the nation’s transport system safer.

Four State House of Assembly constituencies in Delta and Kogi states have been restored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general election.

The move comes after court rulings directing the electoral commission to restore the constituencies that had earlier been suppressed.

This was contained in a statement by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, on Friday.

In Delta, three constituencies restored are Abraka, Isoko North II and Ughelli South II. In Kogi State, Yagba West II is restored.

The commission said political parties will hold primaries for candidates to contest the restored seats between August 21 and 25, 2026.

INEC said the exercise is within the same period slated for primaries for other upcoming bye-elections across the country.

The elections in the affected constituencies are to be held on 19 September 2026.

The commission urged political parties intending to conduct primaries for the revived constituencies to submit the requisite notices in advance of their respective dates.

INEC also said all other activities and timelines in its earlier released timetable for the 2027 general election would apply to the restored constituencies.

The electoral body reiterated its commitment to holding credible, transparent and inclusive elections.
