Nasarawa Governor: Osinbajo Is More Than Qualified To Be President In 2023

0

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has praised Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as the best candidate to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Following the appearance of posters online and in major Nigerian cities suggesting that Osinbajo would run for president in 2023, the vice president’s office issued a statement saying he has not declared for the presidency.

Sule described Professor Yemi Osinbajo of the Progressive Consolidation Group for Vice President as a sellable candidate while hosting him at Government House Lafia on Monday.

“In the upcoming 2023 presidential election across the country, Osinbajo is the most qualified candidate and only sellable product that can succeed President Muhammadu Buhari,” he said.

While endorsing the vice president’s bid for the presidency in 2023, the governor stated that Nasarawa State is committed to “continuation.”

He described the vice president as a man of integrity who everyone respected, saying that if given the chance to lead the country, Osinbajo, a professional lawyer, would take the country to the pinnacle of development.

Dr. Aliyu Rabiu, the group’s leader, previously stated that the purpose of their visit to Nasarawa State was to canvass for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to run for President in 2023.

He claimed that President Buhari’s policies are working, and that the country’s unemployment is being addressed through the social upliftment policy.

The group’s membership spans the country’s six geopolitical zones, according to our correspondent.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Awgu local government area, Enugu state, was set ablaze by unidentified hoodlums on Sunday, September 19. The incident happened in the wee hours of the morning.
The arsonists climbed over the office walls before setting fire to some of the offices, according to an eyewitness. However, fire fighters from the Enugu State Fire Service intervened quickly and prevented extensive damage.

The incident was confirmed by the Enugu state police command. Daniel Ndukwe, a state police image maker, said the command has begun an investigation to find the arsonists.
The incident has also been confirmed by the victim, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Mr Emeka Ononamadu, the Enugu state Resident Electoral Commissioner, informed the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye(Esq). He revealed that no one was killed in the hoodlums’ attack, and that sensitive INEC materials had been evacuated from outside stations to the state headquarters following their initial experience.

In 23 states, APC is fighting crisis

0

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is facing an intra-party crisis in 23 states as a result of parallel ward and local government congresses. The newly-formed nine-member reconciliation committee, led by former Nasarawa governor Adamu Abdullahi, is reportedly targeting five of the 23 states where parallel congresses were held as must-resolve issues before the October 2 state congress.

Three of the five states are in the South-West, where the party’s four state chapters held parallel ward and local government congresses.

Lagos, where five factions have emerged, Ogun, where three factions technically exist, and Osun, where the two dominant factions have remained on the street, tearing each other’s cloth, are the three must-resolve issues.

The party’s Ekiti State chapter is also embroiled in a factional conflict, but the matter has been adjudicated because the faction loyal to APC national leader, Senator Bola Tinubu, is already in court, fighting the mainstream faction loyal to Governor Kayode Fayemi. The conflict in the party’s Ogun State chapter is primarily between Senator Ibikunle Amosun’s supporters and Governor Dapo Abiodun’s supporters, who have Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s support.

The third faction in the state is loyal to former governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba and is not affiliated with either of the two mainstream factions. Though the Lagos4Lagos/Oki combination had a huge success in the final list of ward executives, endorsed by the national headquarters, there are five factions vying for supremacy in the Lagos State chapter.

Loyalists of Lagos4Lagos, led by Mr Olajide Adediran, a gubernatorial candidate, swept nearly all of the major positions in the Apapa local government of the party’s incumbent caretaker chairman, Mr. Tunde Balogun. Balogun was sworn in with the support of all the ward chairmen and was endorsed by Abuja, but he lost his base.

Lagos4Lagos also held a parallel local government congress and submitted a separate winners’ list to the national headquarters, much like the ward congress, which largely prevailed in the final national collation.

However, Fouad Oki, a candidate for Balogun’s seat, told the Nigerian Tribune that the party’s various factions were unable to reach a consensus.

Mr. Moshood Salvador, a former state chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, leads the fourth breakaway faction known as the Conscience group (PDP).

AMCON (Ambode Campaign Organization) is the fifth faction, which is clearly loyal to former governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

Apart from the three states in the South West, the reconciliation committee, which is expected to be inaugurated this week, will focus on Anambra State, where a governorship election is pending and party gladiators are fuming over the candidate, Senator Andy Uba, and Zamfara State, where decampee Governor Matawalle is struggling to establish himself as the state chapter’s leader, despite his defection.

With the party’s leadership looking for more gubernatorial defections from the opposition PDP, Matawalle’s case is seen as a must-resolve to persuade other PDP governors who are considering leaving to join the APC.

Kwara, Imo, Delta, Enugu, Akwa-Ibom, Rivers, and others are among the states wracked by internal strife.

The threat by the party’s interim national body to sanction those involved in parallel congresses or litigation has not deterred disgruntled members from airing their grievances in court or through parallel congresses.

Why Nigerian Doctors Leaving — NMA

0

According to the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the increasing human capital flight of doctors from Nigeria is due to poor welfare and remuneration of its members.

Dr. Aniekeme Uwah, the NMA’s National Publicity Secretary, spoke on Monday at the 2021 Correspondents’ Chapel Week in Uyo on the topic “The Post-COVID-19 Economy and the Challenges to Ethical Journalism Ahead of the 2023 Elections.”

As a result, Dr. Uwah has called on all levels of government to address the issue.

“So many of our Nigerian colleagues have left for greener pastures abroad, and if this is not addressed, the health sector will be severely impacted,” he said. The only way for doctors and other health workers to be motivated and well compensated is for the government to make adequate budgetary provisions.”

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives Health Committee has urged the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to end its strike and return to work in the public interest.

Pascal Obi, the chairman of the committee, made the announcement during a tour of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) to inspect capital projects on Monday.

“As we appeal to executives to do the right thing, we also appeal to medical practitioners to show compassion when it is required. You can only carry out any responsibility if you are in good health.”

In a related development, Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi, the Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti in Ekiti State, has appealed to the federal government to resolve current differences with the striking doctors.

Oba Alabi, speaking at a stakeholders meeting in his palace to mobilize his community for COVID-19 vaccination, said doctors must return to work urgently due to the rising cholera outbreak across the country, COVID-19, and other viral diseases.

Banditry: In Katsina, eight village chiefs abandon their domains in search of safety

0

Bandits’ activities in Katsina State’s Batsari Local Government Area have forced eight village heads to flee their homes for safety in the state capital.

Bandit attacks are common in the villages and communities of one of the state’s most dangerous frontline local government areas.

The state government took steps to curb bandit activity in the state, including shutting down the Batsari Cattle Weekly Market, one of the largest in the region.
In an interview with newsmen, the District Head of Batsari, Sarkin Ruman Katsina, Alhaji Tukur Muazu, said his domain was constantly overrun by bandits.

“Eight of my village chiefs have given up because they can no longer bear it. Likewise, the villages and farmlands have been abandoned,” he said.

He also claimed that most of the villages and hamlets bordering the Rugu Forest have been abandoned as a result of the constant attacks.

“The local government headquarters, Batsari, is bursting at the seams with internally displaced people from the villages. When you go there, the only people you’ll find are those who have nothing to fall back on,” he added.

Farmers in the area are the hardest hit, according to the traditional ruler, who claims that they have chased all farmers away from their farms and rustled their cattle.

He hasn’t worked on his farmlands in three years, he said.

In Kogi, gunmen kill one person and kidnap three others

Gunmen assaulted the Episcopal Church of West Africa (ECWA) in Kabba, Kogi State, yesterday, murdering one person and kidnapping three others.

Eight days earlier, gunmen assaulted the Federal Medium Correctional Centre in the same location, killing five people and allowing 240 convicts to flee.

The congregants of the ECWA Church, which is located on the Kabba-Okene Expressway, are largely faculty and students of the College of Education Technical, Kabba, Kogi State.

The gunmen were claimed to have assassinated the college’s main security officer, who was also a church member, before abducting their victims, which included the college’s pioneer provost, Mr J. O. T Osadumo.

An eyewitness stated that the abductors stormed the church while the ceremony was still going on, injuring the wife of the abducted former provost and some students.

Also unknown is the whereabouts of some poultry farmers who were tending to their birds at the farm when the event at the church occurred, as the abductors were claimed to be heading towards the Okene axis of the highway.

Two additional people who were shot, according to an eyewitness who requested anonymity, are being treated in an unnamed hospital.

Anambra elders advise voters to vote for the greatest candidate

0

The Anambra State Elders’ Council has advised eligible voters to participate in the electioneering process and vote for the best candidate among the many candidates vying to succeed Governor Willie Obiano on Election Day.

The council, in a communiqué jointly signed by a former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Solo Chukwulobelu, issued at the end of their recent meeting at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, warned against plans to instigate crisis ahead of the state’s November 6 elections.

The Elders’ council acknowledged that political party campaigns had so far been calm and free of violence, and recommended that this trend continue. However, they warned against social media abuse, which they described as unhealthy and potentially violent.

“We observe that our state’s previous two big elections were free of violence, and we urge all of our citizens to continue with peaceful campaigns and elections.

“All political parties contesting the election, their candidates, supporters, and all Ndi Anambra, as well as the electoral officials, are urged to work together to ensure a free and fair election. The outcomes must be transparent and reflect the people’s will.

“We ask all candidates and their supporters to desist from personal attacks and instead focus on issue-based campaigns that contribute to Anambra State’s peace and development.

“As the state’s governorship election approaches on Nov. 6, we urge residents to vote for the best candidate. The elders urged Ndi Anambra to turn out in large numbers to exercise their right to vote and vote for the best candidate because Anambra deserved the best.

DMO Invites Local Investors To Purchase A $3 Billion Eurobond

0

Domestic investors will be able to buy the $3 billion Eurobond that the Nigerian government will issue next month, according to the Debt Management Office (DMO).

DMO said in a statement that the exercise is aimed at local investors, as opposed to earlier Eurobond auctions that were only open to international investors.

The organization stated that it would organize meetings with interesting moneybags to explain the advantages of purchasing the notes.

Chapel Hill Denham Advisory Services Limited was picked out of eight businesses to oversee the sale of the papers to local investors, while JP Morgan and Citigroup Global Markets Limited will handle the sale to offshore investors, according to the debt office.

The DMO stated that while it plans to raise $3 billion from the exercise, it may sell up to $6.2 billion if the country’s parliament approves it.

It should be remembered that the government last contacted the global debt capital market in 2018. Last year, it hoped to explore space, but the COVID-19 outbreak derailed those plans, forcing the agency to shift the Eurobond offer to a domestic sale.

Naira has lost 209% of its value, in six years

0

Despite the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) spending over $130 billion to defend the naira and a slew of policies aimed at bolstering its value over the last six years, the Nigerian currency has depreciated by over 209.2%, falling from N196.99 to a dollar in December 2015 to N412.06 to a dollar in September 2021.

The parallel market has seen considerably more depreciation, with one dollar selling for about N550 in September 2021, compared to around N230 in December 2015.

According to the findings of the Nigerian Tribune, the apex bank sold as much as $130.6 billion to foreign exchange market operators in its numerous interventions between 2016 and the first quarter of this year, even as it devised dozens of measures to save the sagging national currency.
According to papers and information available on the CBN website, the CBN defended the naira with $11.7 billion between January and December 2016. In 2017, the sum was $15.8 billion, then $36.6 billion in 2018, $34.3 billion in 2019, and $27.84 billion in 2020.

The CBN spent $4.37 billion in the first quarter of 2021 to defend the naira. The records revealed that the CBN continued to intervene directly in the interbank foreign currency market to maintain exchange rate stability in order to relieve pressure on the naira.

As a result, it sold dollars on the foreign currency market, which included interbank spot, Invisibles, SMEs, the I&E window, and forwards sales at various times. Although using dollars to defend the naira has reduced pressure on the currency, it has also eroded the country’s foreign reserves, which remained at $33.32 billion as of June 30, 2021, less than a fourth of what was used to save the naira.

Emefiele explained the rationale for using the country’s external reserves to protect the naira, saying the CBN Act requires the central bank to defend the currency, and that a flexible exchange rate would not benefit the poor. I am dedicated to safeguarding the Naira. The Naira cannot be allowed to float freely.”

Mr. Godwin Emefiele’s tenure as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria has seen the implementation of a number of initiatives aimed at bolstering the naira’s value. The selling of dollars to people involved in the importation of 41 commodities that might be produced in Nigeria was halted in June 2015.

The decision was made to “conserve foreign reserves as well as enable the revival of local industry and improve employment generation,” according to the national bank. During a news conference in January 2016, the CBN governor announced that the apex bank will no longer sell dollars to BDCs.

“From now on, the Bank will no longer sell foreign exchange to BDCs,” he stated. Operators in this market category will now have to obtain their foreign exchange from unaffiliated sources. They should be aware, however, that the CBN would devote greater resources to monitoring these sources in order to guarantee that no operators are breaking our anti-money laundering laws.”

Emefiele went on to say that the actions were not meant to be punitive, but rather to ensure the nation’s resources were preserved and the financial system was stabilized. However, the CBN then overturned its decision and resumed selling dollars to BDC firms.

The CBN opened a fresh window for investors, exporters, and end-users in 2017, with the goal of raising liquidity and driving the currency rate lower. However, since the naira continued to fall, this was ineffective. The CBN expanded the list of commodities prohibited from obtaining foreign exchange to 42 in 2018 when it imposed a foreign exchange ban on the importing of fertilizers.

This was revealed in a circular headed “Re: Inclusion of some imported products and services on the list of items designated as “Not Valid for Foreign Exchange in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market.”

“In the continued effort to sustain the achievement recorded from the classification of 41 items as ‘Not valid for foreign exchange in the Nigerian foreign exchange market, authorized dealers and the general public are hereby notified of the inclusion of fertilizer on the lists effective Friday, December 7, 2018.” said the circular signed by Ahmed Umar, Director, Trade and Exchange Department.

The CBN devalued the naira in March 2020, adjusting the official exchange rate from N307 to N360 per dollar.

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) ordered businesses and people to stop using the parallel market for foreign currency conversion in May 2020.

Later that month, the apex bank lifted the FX restrictions on maize imports, citing the need to “boost local production, stimulate a speedy economic recovery, safeguard rural livelihoods, and increase jobs that were lost as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”

The CBN introduced the Naira for Dollar policy for Diaspora remittances in March 2021. Recipients of Diaspora remittances will be given N5 for every $1 received in remittance inflow under the scheme.

In July 2021, the CBN declared that all currency sales to Bureau De Change operators will be halted due to unlawful forex trading and economic sabotage. New BDCs will not be registered, according to the CBN.

Maduka: I’ll establish a seaport in Onitsha and create a business-friendly atmosphere

0

Dr. Godwin Maduka, the Accord Party’s governorship candidate, has promised to develop a seaport in Onitsha, the state’s commercial nerve center.

He stated that as governor, he would utilize his position to support the dredging of the River Niger, which runs through the area, as well as the construction of a suitable seaport to help enhance the state’s economic activity.

Maduka stated emphatically that constructing a seaport in the area will aid in increasing the state’s trade volume, hence boosting the financial gain of the impoverished in Anambra and the South East in general.

He urged people to support his governorship bid because he has good plans for the state and promised not to disappoint them if given the chance to serve.

“In Anambra, we are recognized for our trade. As a result, we’ll make certain that all of the elements that facilitate trade are in place. We’ll make sure that our roads are in good working order so that people can get there.

“An airport has been constructed. We can either improve it or leave it as is after inspecting it to ensure everything is in working order. I have stated that we will proceed with the expansion of the seaport to include Onitsha.

“This is due to the fact that it restricts our trade. It is not difficult to accomplish. You only need to find individuals who know what they’re doing and offer them conditions, which I’ve already begun to do, and we’ll be able to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to Onitsha, where we’ll have a seaport.

“It’s a federal project,” says the narrator. As a result, we will apply to them since I am confident that it will benefit our country. If they are unable to do so, but give us permission to proceed, we will.

“We will create an environment in which people will want to come to Anambra and trade. We’ll put them in a situation where they can succeed,” Maduka said.
