The ZLP slams the APGA and asks that’suppressive charges’ on poor Anambra citizens be abolished

0

The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has slammed the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)-led government in Anambra State for imposing “suppressive taxes” on the state’s poor.

Dr Obiora Okonkwo, the party’s governorship candidate, said Governor Willie Obiano’s recent suspension of several taxes was politically motivated.

He requested that the “suppressive levies” put on Ndi Anambra by the APGA government be immediately lifted, adding that the governor had been callous in imposing various fees on the citizens despite the country’s dire economic circumstances.

In a statement, Afam Dozie Ofomata, the ZLP Campaign Council’s Publicity Secretary, stated that the party and its governorship candidate will not accept anything less than “complete repeal of all extortionist taxes forced on Ndi Anambra by the oppressive and corrupt APGA regime.”

“Dr. Okonkwo, the people’s advocate, notes with dismay the shenanigan by the APGA administration to dupe Ndi Anambra by announcing a decrease and suspension of an infinitesimal percentage of the obnoxious levies after he called out the government on its exploitation,” he stated.

“Our candidate vehemently opposes the use of the strong arm, bullying, and coercion to impose high levies on commercial vehicle operators, Okada riders, hawkers, cart pushers, artisans, market women, farmers, and other hardworking citizens and residents who are already suffering from Governor Obian’s misrule.

“Such extortionate fees only demonstrate APGA’s insensitivity to the people’s predicament.

“APGA has subsequently lost its purpose and now operates solely to profit its leaders, as the majority of taxes and levies are not submitted to government coffers but instead end up in the pockets of APGA leaders and their friends.

“As a result, our candidacy rejects the promised suspension and reduction of part of the oppressive charges, insisting on a comprehensive assessment and full cancellation of all levies imposed on the less fortunate, who should instead be aided.

“In addition, we are aware that the APGA is using the suspension as a political card to court favor with the electorate in order to keep power, after which it will return and further increase the onerous charges.

“What’s more upsetting is that Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the APGA candidate, is complicit in this heinous exploitative plan against Ndi Anambra. If Soludo is not a part of this crime against the people, the ZLP dares him to speak up.

“Our candidate, Dr. Okonkwo, argues that government’s responsibility is to ensure the welfare of the people, not to put them through suffering.

“He has often chastised the collection of such ad hoc levies, particularly when they do not reach government coffers. He has always insisted on putting an end to such tax regimes as soon as he is elected and sworn in as governor, arguing that such levies merely impoverish the people rather than help them construct the Anambra of their dreams.

“Okonkwo has already perfected a comprehensive economic development model that will attract over $15 billion in investment across many investment windows to help restore Anambra and empower its people.

“The ZLP thus invites Ndi Anambra to free their state from the grip of the APGA by standing up to their antics and voting en masse for their standard bearer, Dr. Obiora Okonkwo, on the ZLP platform on November 6, 2021,” the statement said.

Students at Lagos’ model college will pay N35,000 per term in experimental fees

In each of the next two terms, boarding house students at Lagos State Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools will pay N35,000 in fees.

The clarification was made by Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, Commissioner for Education, in a statement released in Lagos on Sunday by Mr Ganiu Lawal, an assistant director in the ministry.

The “experimental fee regime,” according to Adefisayo, is in accordance with a resolution reached by ministry officials, parents, and lawmakers.

She promised that no additional fees would be charged, and that no intervention would be imposed on parents during this time.

The goal, according to Adefisayo, is to avoid overburdening parents while also allowing for a true reflection of the new boarding school fees’ viability in the 2021/2022 academic session.

“In terms of necessary nutrition, the students’ menu list will be reviewed and standardised. Schools are also expected to incorporate locally available menu items and seasonal foods into their curriculum.
“After the second term, there will be a review to analyze the expenditures, gaps, needs, and adequacy of N35,000 per term to cater for a boarding student,” she said.

To ensure inclusive supervision, the commissioner added that representatives from parents would be included in the boarding house committees.

The commissioner expressed gratitude to parents for their patience and support of the state government.

All stakeholders were assured by Adefisayo that the state government was committed to providing high-quality education.

Yahaya Bello/Fani-Kayode presidential campaign posters are disowned by group in 2023

Nigeria Youths Awareness Group, a support group for Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello’s presidential ambitions, has disowned presidential campaign posters of the governor and Femi Fani-Kayode.

They were depicted as presidential candidates and running mates for the presidential election of 2023 in the posters.

However, the group claimed in a statement issued by its National President, Alhaji Salihu Magaji, and made available to journalists in Bauchi that Governor Bello was unaware of the posters’ printing and did not give his approval.

According to Magaji, the governor of Kogi State had no prior knowledge of the aforementioned posters and flyers, nor did he know the group or individuals behind them.

“Our attention has been drawn to posters and flyers purporting to be campaign posters for Governor Yahaya Bello, with Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation, as Yahaya Bello’s Vice-President. The photos have gone viral on social media and have also been published by an online publication campaigning for their presidential ambitions and vice-presidential candidacy in 2023.

”We want to make it clear that Governor Bello is completely unaware of this. His Excellency is unaware of the group or individuals behind the posters and flyers,” Magaji said.

He went on to say that the Governor was well aware that a running mate would be chosen only after the party’s primary election, and questioned why Fani-Kayode, who had only recently joined the ruling party, could share the presidential ticket with Governor Bello.

”His Excellency, as a responsible Governor who is acutely aware of the plight and well-being of the people, cannot and will not support such hasty intentions, particularly at this critical juncture.

“Everyone knows that everything in politics has a procedure: vice presidents are usually chosen after a successful primary election. But how can Femi Fani-Kayode, who only joined the APC two days ago, have a joint ticket with Yahaya Bello, a respected democratic exemplary leader, without going through the proper channels? “It’s not possible,” he stated emphatically.

He urged the governor’s supporters to remain calm and focused, declaring that 2023 is in God’s hands, and urging Nigerians not to be misled by anyone or any group using Yahaya Bello’s name to achieve their political goals.

“We want to remind all Yahaya Bello supporters to stay calm and focused, and to understand that Governor Bello is unaware of the posters.

“The year 2023 is in the hands of the Almighty God, who is the true benefactor of each of His dear ones and who alone has the power to enthrone and dethrone. We are pleading with Almighty Allah to allow Yahaya Bello to become Nigeria’s next President,” he said.
