Senate Passes Bill To Increase Number Of Law School Campuses

0

The Senate passed a bill on Tuesday that aims to expand the number of law school campuses across the country.

The bill was passed after the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters adopted a report.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Chairman of the Committee, said the bill seeks seven additional law school campuses in Kabba, Kogi State, Jos, Plateau State, and Maiduguri, Borno State, while presenting the report during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Ilawe, Ekiti State, Okija, Anambra State, Orogun, Delta State, and Arugungu, Kebbi State are among the others.

Senator Bamidele stated that, given the exponential increase in the number of law graduates from Nigerian and foreign universities, as well as the long-standing backlog, this legislative intervention is not only appropriate and timely, but also crucial.

BREAKING: Soldier Shot During Community Attack In Gombe

0

Following a new outbreak of violence in Nyuwar, Gombe State, hostilities may have returned in remote communities bordering Gombe and Adamawa States in Northeast Nigeria.

Our correspondent has learned that tensions have been rising since a soldier was shot while attempting to repel an attack on Nyuwar by the Waja community on Tuesday afternoon.

Through a phone call, an eyewitness in Nyuwar confirmed to newsmen in Gombe, the State capital, that the soldier was injured while attempting to repel attacks on Nyuwar Community by the Waja community, which carried out a similar attack on Nyuwar and Jessu in April of last year. The attack on the community continued unabated even after the soldier was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment, as the combined team of security operatives stationed in the community was reportedly outmanned by the attackers.

Several homes were said to have been touched, forcing women, children, and the elderly to seek refuge in neighboring communities.

Residents in Jessu, a neighboring community to Nyuwar, were reported to be fleeing the town in a hurry for safety. The Wajas reportedly attacked Nyuwar and Jessu, two Lunguda communities, in April of last year, forcing many residents to relocate to neighboring communities for safety.

Our correspondent’s attempts to obtain a police response to the latest incident were unsuccessful, as calls to the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mary Obed Malum (SP), were not answered or returned.
As of the time of filing this report, Julius Ishaya Lapes, the State Commissioner for Information, told our correspondent that he was still conducting consultations to determine the true situation. He promised to contact me as soon as he had more information.

BREAKING: Five Soldiers Killed In Auto Crash While Answering Distress Call To Repel Alleged Attack By IPOB’s Eastern Security Network

A MRAP (mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicle) had an accident in Anambra State on Tuesday, killing five soldiers and critically injuring others.

According to reports, soldiers from the 302 Artillery Regiment, General Support, Onitsha, were on their way to Ihiala to join their colleagues at a military checkpoint after receiving information that ESN operatives were planning to attack the checkpoint.
Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), launched ESN in December 2020 to protect the people of the South-East region from alleged northern terrorists and bandits.

The IPOB leader described the outfit as a replica of the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun, earlier launched by South-West governors to curb insecurity in their region.

“The sole aim and objective of this newly formed security outfit known as Eastern Security Network are to halt every criminal activity and the terrorist attack on Biafraland,” Kanu had said.

“This outfit, which is a vigilante group like the Amotekun in the South-West and the Miyetti Allah security outfit, will ensure the safety of our forests and farmland, which terrorists have converted into slaughter grounds and raping fields.”

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has commended a corps member, Sulfat Aliu Oyindamola, for empowering about 70 women and youths in the State with skill acquisition for self employment as her personal Community Development Service (CDS) project.

The Governor made the commendation at the graduation ceremony marking the end of the four week intensive training for the beneficiaries in Yola, the State capital.
Represented by his Special Assistant on Poverty Alleviation and Wealth Creation, Hajiya Aisha Bello, Fintiri approved for the immediate data capture of all the 70 beneficiaries for further empowerment and government support. The various skills include tailoring, cosmetology, leather work as well as livestock farming.
Fintiri further assured of his Government readiness to support individuals and groups with such laudable projects aimed at reducing poverty and creating job opportunities, particularly for women and youths in the State.
Speaking during the event, the corps member stated that she has always been disturbed at the rate of women and youth unemployment in the society. It is out of this concern that she decided to contribute her little quota towards reducing the menace; and that the NYSC’s Community Development Service (CDS) programme served as the best opportunity and platform to achieve that. The corps member hails from Kwara State and a graduate of Accounting from Lagos State Polytechnic.

In his remarks, the State Coordinator NYSC Adamawa State, Mal. Ibrahim M. Tukur, called on other corps members to emulate Miss Sulfat Aliu by impacting positively on their host communities. Represented by the Head of CDS, Mr. Sumla M. Elisha, the State Coordinator appealed to the members of the public to always support corps members engaging in CDS projects.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Gloria Musa, thanked the corps member and the NYSC scheme at large for the empowerment and for making it possible for them to be identified and captured by the state Government for further support and training.

1000 CSOs meet in Abuja, recommend Yahaya Bello’s leadership model for Nigeria

0

No fewer than one thousand registered Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Pro-Democracy Societies, drawn from various States across Nigeria, converged on Abuja, the nation’s capital, on Thursday, to discus the needed leadership model for the country.

Coming under the aegis of Civil Society Think Tank, the CSOs made up of professionals, youths and women, said they were in Abuja for ‘a one-day intellectual discourse on the future of Nigeria’, with the theme, “A glance into Nigeria’s Future and Governor Yahaya Bello’s developmental politics: 2023 in perspective”.

One of the guest speakers and former Director-General of National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos, Prof. Ahmed Danfulani, said time had come for a true leadership in Nigeria, that would be all inclusive, regardless of region, religion and status.
“Governor Yahaya Bello’s example in leadership is noteworthy. I see a lot that distinguishes him as a leader of repute in many areas. His approach to religion and ethnicity in a state as ethnically and religiously sensitive is one. The emphasis on gender sensitivity is also worthy of mention. His approach to addressing the security challenges in the state is also top-notch.

“Governor Yahaya Bello has set examples that should be amplified and used as a yardstick in assessing candidates that have signified interest in leading this country. This is what I urge all of us to be strategic about.

“At the back of our minds, let us have that we must be clear about the qualities the next President of Nigeria should possess. This is on the heels that stepping into the shoes of President Muhammadu Buhari is a tedious task.

“The emphasis should not be about zoning, ethnicity or religion. It must also not be about who has an enormous war chest. It should be about competence and strategy for addressing the challenges in the country.

“From 2023, we hold the ace to ensure that we must get it right, and the emphasis should be about developmental politics, as encapsulated in the theme of this meeting. The reference to Governor Yahaya Bello is fitting and germane. I believe that Nigeria has come of age, and zoning or ethnicity should no longer dictate how we are governed”, Prof. Danfulani said.

On his part, Dr. Omale Ben Amedu said, “almost every sphere of societal grouping has at different times picked out the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello for one reason or another, as a doyen of exemplary leadership. It has been the women group one day, one geo-political forum on another day, People Living With Disabilities on yet another day, the body of Entertainers on their own, the Sports Legends, Clerics across the religions, Elder Statesmen, the Youth Constituency, Traditional Rulers, Professionals, Students, the Media and even many other fora least known and least expected. One must have lost count by now, the acceptability recounts of those who have come up and out openly to choose Governor Yahaya Bello on one point or the other, as to why he is a preferred leadership personality – yet still counting. There must be something unique therefore, of this Yahaya Father Bello”.

In the fight against insecurity, Dr. Amedu posited that, “insecurity has become the constance of the people’s everyday living. Killings, maiming, banditry, robbery, kidnapping, abduction, rituals, cultism, and other vices have kept everyone on their toes, sitting at the edges and keeping at least one eye open all through are now living in us and with us. In a spate of insecurity, every other endeavour is shredded. Despite these threats and the attendant fears, Kogi State has remained calm and normal. So, what is it that Governor Yahaya Bello has in his kitty”?

Dr. Uzah Thomas, the Dean of Student Affairs, Kwararafa University, Wukari, in his presentation, stressed that the nation needed to learn from the politics of all inclusiveness and progressive development, which the Kogi Governor was known for.

“Upon assuming office by Governor Yahaya Bello in 2015, he was confronted by a myriad of challenges that seemed insurmountable with an increasing rate of despondency amongst the state’s indigenes.

“According to available records, it was discovered that the Yahaya Bello administration was confronted by a hydra-headed monster that held down the state. All sectors of the state’s economy were in an absolute state of despair. Therefore it became a herculean task for the new administration to meet its social obligations to the state’s indigenes due to past maladministration in the state”, Dr. Uzah added.
