0

The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) held a Digital Closing Gong Ceremony on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, to honor the accomplishments of female Chairpersons of NGX listed companies and their affiliates who were appointed in 2021.

The event was held as part of The Exchange’s ongoing collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) on the Nigeria2Equal program, which aims to close gender gaps in leadership, employment, and entrepreneurship.

“We remain resolute in our commitment to supporting global aspirations to achieve gender equality in line with the targets of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 by leveraging our platforms to support issuers and market participants in achieving their gender goals and aspirations,” said Mr Temi Popoola, CFA, Chief Executive Officer, NGX, in his opening remarks.

The Nigeria2Equal program, which was developed in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to promote gender equality among listed companies, is one of these initiatives. The appointment of these powerful women as Board Chairs not only demonstrates their leadership abilities, but also their long-standing commitment to their respective industries and track records of delivering exceptional value. Their accomplishments exemplify the Nigeria2Equal program’s goals and should be celebrated.”

“IFC’s commitment to advancing gender equality is anchored in a strong business case that ensures equal opportunities for both men and women to reach their full potential and help economies achieve sustainable growth and prosperity,” said Kalim M. Shah, Senior Country Manager for Nigeria, International Finance Corporation (IFC). Companies can improve their business performance by addressing persistent gender gaps and increasing women’s participation as leaders. The Nigeria2Equal gender program, led by the IFC, aims to increase women’s participation in corporate leadership, employment, and entrepreneurship. Today is a watershed moment in the advancement of women as leaders and board chairs in the world of business.”

Erelu Angela Adebayo, Chairperson, NGX Real Estate Limited, praised the Nigerian Exchange Limited Board of Directors for the commendable initiative in her remarks. She praised the NGX Group of Companies for growing from a company with less than 30% female representation on the Nigerian Stock Exchange’s (NSE) National Council to a group of four companies with two female Chairs. She also praised NGX for its ongoing efforts to collaborate with prestigious organizations like the IFC and use its platform to bring gender issues to the forefront of the economic agenda.

Mrs Catherine Echeozo, Chairman of NGX Regulation Limited, recognized and congratulated the board chairperson appointees honored, emphasizing the value of diversity. “Diversity is about leveraging the full breadth and depth of talent available and equipping companies with diverse talents and perspectives so that they can better navigate and address challenges in an increasingly complex and competitive global environment,” she said.

“It is quite ironic that we are celebrating the advancements we have made in corporate governance a day after the National Assembly voted very strongly against a bill that was seeking to address the imbalance in female representation in all facets of our national life,” Dr Omobola Johnson, Chair, Guinness Nigeria Plc, said of the current barriers facing women in leadership positions. All hands must be on deck in order to build a stronger nation. Women want to be partners and collaborators on this journey, and we won’t be able to do so if we’re barred from doing so by law, cultural practices, and norms.”

“As a pre-eminent Pan-African institution in over 33 African countries, our focus on gender balance supports our mission to contribute to the economic and financial development of our continent,” Mrs Bola Adesola, Chairman, Ecobank Nigeria, said of the opportunities that corporate organizations can leverage from promoting gender equality. This is because a woman manages one out of every four Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in Africa. Ecobank is delighted to continue working with NGX and IFC on Breaking the Bias. I’d like to implore us all to work tirelessly against actions that jeopardize the human rights of half of our beloved country’s population.”

“This Closing Gong Ceremony is a laudable occasion where NGX has shown that evidence, there is a need to celebrate women for other women to come up,” said Dr. (Mrs.) Ajoritsedere Awosika, MFR, Chairman, Access Bank Plc. She congratulated all the recent board appointees and highlighted the importance of celebrating female leaders as a critical step to inspiring younger professional women, she said. This celebration of women, which NGX is putting on in collaboration with IFC, will go a long way toward demonstrating to other institutions the importance of promoting what is already happening at all levels of human endeavor: women are actively seeking positions of service to make a positive difference.”

The event was held as part of the NGX Group of Companies’ 2022 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations, which take place every year to honor women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. The 8th Ring the Bell for Gender Equality, hosted by the NGX Group of Companies in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Initiative, United Nations (UN) Women, UN Global Compact (UNGC), and World Federation of Exchanges, will take place on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. 2023: Gboko Politicians Endorse Gov. Ortom For Senate

The people of Gboko Local Government Area have endorsed Governor Samuel Ortom for election as Senator representing Benue North-West senatorial district in the 2023 general elections.

As a result, if Governor Ortom declares his interest in running for senator, they have offered to lead the campaign for his election.

The people of Gboko spoke their minds on Wednesday, March 2nd, 2022, when they paid Governor Ortom a ‘thank you’ visit at the Benue Peoples House Makurdi.

Chief Mike Mku, who spoke for the local government’s political class, offered to personally lead the Governor’s campaign team if he declares his intention to run for office.

“Governor Ortom has done for the people of Gboko what no Governor has ever done,” Chief Mku says, citing numerous appointments, road projects, and the construction of a world-class Tor Tiv Palace as examples.

Professor Anthony Ijohor, SAN, Secretary to the State Government, said that when a Jemgbagh son finished his term as Governor in 2007, he “was elected to the Senate and the person he brought was also supported to succeed him as Governor.”

According to him, because of Governor Ortom’s widespread support and the precedent he has established, the people of Gboko and Jemgbagh will not only vote for him in the Senate, but will also line up behind the person he nominates to become Governor in 2023.

The people of Gboko came to express their gratitude to the Governor for the many good things he has done for them, according to Ter Gboko, Chief Gabriel Shosum, who led traditional rulers as part of the delegation.

He explained that the Governor’s good works in Gboko extend to all 17 council wards, emphasizing that another key feature of his administration is the prohibition of thuggery, which has resulted in peace in the state.

Queen Menenge, speaking on behalf of women, expressed gratitude for the Governor’s many good deeds for their husbands, children, and themselves, emphasizing that they only looked up to the First Lady, Dr Mrs Eunice Ortom, who has continued to guide them.

Governor Ortom responded by expressing his delight at the visit, noting that he has not received a delegation as powerful as the one from Gboko since the COVID-19 era.

The Governor, who described Gboko as his first home, expressed his gratitude to the people for their kind words, emphasizing that they support him as a family, not as a politician.

After the Governor had been dressed in Tiv traditional attire, the Gboko women presented him with a cake with the inscription “Gboko Appointees Saying Thank You Ortom.”

Fuel Scarcity: NNPC Begins Loading At Depots To Clear Queues

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited said it had started loading trucks at all of its depots to alleviate the country’s current scarcity.

It went on to say that there was currently 1.7 billion litres of gasoline in stock.

Malam Mele Kyari, the NNPC’s Group Managing Director, told journalists in Abuja on Wednesday after a meeting with the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and Petrol Tanker Drivers.

The Depot and Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria and the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria were also present at the meeting.

Because of the persistent queues in the nation’s capital and other parts of the country, and fewer stations dispensing the product, Kyari said the additional fuel would help alleviate the situation.

“At the moment, we have over 1.7 billion litres of PMS in our possession, both on land and in the sea.”

“We now have the capacity to load out excessively from all depots,” says the company. We’ve put in place procedures to ensure that all depots can load 24 hours a day.

“This will ensure that the scarcity created by panic buying is now alleviated, allowing normalcy to return to filling stations. “In situations like this, people typically go to the gas stations and buy more than they need, and this is what additional supply will alleviate. “I am confident that we will see relief on this very soon,” he said.

Neither the Federal Government nor the NNPC, according to Kyari, have any plans to raise the price of gasoline at the pump.

He urged marketers to make sure that they are selling gasoline at the government-approved price.

Following the meeting, the stakeholders agreed that the NNPC should impose necessary sanctions on any marketer found selling gasoline above the approved price, including refusal to sell PMS to stations or depots.

He also stated that the NNPC would impose any legal sanctions on any defaulting depot owner in order to ensure that Nigerians continue to purchase the product at the approved price.

He, on the other hand, expressed regret for the suffering Nigerians were going through at gas stations and urged consumers to avoid panic buying and only buy what they need at gas stations.

He told the audience that his ambition was to be able to solve the most pressing issues in Nigeria, which he described as “hunger, poverty, disease, and insecurity.”

“Everyone understands that the country is facing a monumental crisis of confidence approaching existential proportions,” he said.

“In addition, my interactions and travels throughout this beautiful country, across Africa, and around the world have given me a powerful insight into the Nigerian people’s DNA.”

“We are the most energised, dynamic, and enterprising people on the planet.” The Nigerian people can perform economic miracles if they are given an enabling environment of good public service delivery systems, free of red tape and abrasive rent seeking culture. “As an economist, I am well aware of the distinction between successful countries that produce economic miracles and laggard countries.
