Buhari re-appoints trustees of Police Trust Fund

0

Members of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) Board of Trustees have been reappointed for one final three-year term with the president’s approval.

According to the NPTF (Establishment) Act of 2019, the renewed appointment will begin on May 19, according to a statement made by the Ministry of Police Affairs on Friday in Abuja.

It further stated that the reappointment was a result of the board’s outstanding performance, which was demonstrated by Nigeria’s improvement in internal security and policing.

The board’s members were initially appointed in May 2020 for a three-year term.

Suleiman Abba, the chairman, Abdullahi Bala, the executive secretary, and a representative from the departments of police affairs, justice, finances, budget, and national planning make up the group.

According to NAN, other representatives include Mansur Ahmed, who represents the organised private sector; Michael Adebiyi, who represents civil society organisations; and the Inspector-General of Police, who represents the Nigerian Police Force.

He urged the government to help protect truck drivers’ and others’ lives by removing old trees across the state.

According to Ministry of Environment officials, the state government is working to remove all old trees across the state in order to avoid a repeat of another heinous incident.

Northern CSOs Tell APC to Zone Senate President Office South-South

0

The Northern Nigeria Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the Senate Presidency of the 10th Assembly to the south.

The Northern coalition believes that a southern minority should be supported as the next Senate President for national coercion, unity, and peace.

The coalition’s chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Hon Adeyeye Olugbenga, made the announcement during a press conference in Abuja yesterday.

They also call for the support of former Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio, claiming that he belongs to the South’s minorities.

Muhammad, speaking on behalf of the group, stated that they decided to support Senator Akpabioa’s emergence as the immediate past Minister of Niger Delta Affairs due to his merit, competence, and integrity.

The coalition stated that its decision was motivated by Akpabio’s patriotism towards the Northern region as a bridge builder through synergies of social relationships and peaceful coexistence.

“It is on this premise that we, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in the North, decided to endorse and support the emergence of Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, former Executive Governor of Akwa-Ibom State and immediate past Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, as the next Senate President and Chairman of the National Assembly, Federal Republic of Nigeria, after a lengthy session of intensely debated permutations and deliberations.”

“Our decision to endorse and support Senator Godswill Akpabio for the coveted office of Senate President was motivated by the patriotic desire he has demonstrated towards our region as a bridge builder through synergies of social relationships and peaceful coexistences, as well as his zeal to ensure a smooth and amicable working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government due to his wealth of administrative and legislative experience.”As the engine room of democratic governance, the National Assembly requires a man of positive action and uncommon leadership ability, such as Senator Godswill Akpabio, as its Chairman.

“From his antecedents and accomplishments, Senator Godswill Akpabio possesses the requisite quality of leadership and innate ability to lead the next National Assembly to successful deliberations, (without crises or fracas), to surmount the monumental challenges confronting the nation,” Muhammad said.

He noted that the office of Senate President has never been held by a Nigerian of Southern minority descent since the establishment of the Fourth Republic on May 29, 1999.

“However, despite our views and sentiments, we are bold to say that merit, competence, and integrity should not be sacrificed on the altar of mediocrity in determining who becomes the next Senate President of the Tenth Assembly, and we believe Senator Akpabio is the right man for the job,” he said.

APC Chieftain Makes Case for Oshiomhole as Senate President

Hon. Osamede Edorodion, a former Vice Chairman of the council and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, has made a case for the election of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as the next President of the House of Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Edorodion’s statement was made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikp

When it comes to determining who holds such a prominent position in the governance of the country, Edorodion believes that experience and pedigree are two of the most important factors to consider.

He made the observation that the geopolitical zone extending from South to South is in a better position to supply the Senate President given the current political arrangement.
Edorodion stated the following while speaking with members of the press in Benin City: “When Oshiomhole was a labour leader, he did excellently well; when he was a governor, he did excellently well; when he was the National Chairman of the ruling party, he also did excellently well; the people of Edo are fully behind his Senate Presidency.”

Edorodion, speaking on the state of the nation, pointed out that the challenges that lie in wait for the presidency of Ahmed Bola Tinubu are numerous. As a result, he advised the need to exercise caution when selecting members of the Federal Executive Council.

He cited the need to address issues such as poverty and an increase in the cost of living in the country, food security, roads, and electricity as examples of such challenges, as well as unemployment and the development of infrastructure.

In addition to this, he provided the President with advice on the necessity of developing people-oriented projects and policies that would improve the overall quality of life and standard of living for all Nigerians.

Ekweremadu faces jail sentence for organ harvesting in landmark UK judgement today

0

On Friday, the man who used to serve as the deputy president of Nigeria’s Senate could be sentenced to anywhere from ten years to life in prison in Britain for his involvement in a plot to steal a healthy man’s kidney in order to give it to his sick daughter.

Ike Ekweremadu, 60, was found guilty in March at London’s Old Bailey criminal court of conspiring to traffic the young street trader into Britain for his body part. This was the first case in the United Kingdom of its kind, and it took place in London. Ekweremadu’s wife, Beatrice, who is 56 years old, and Obinna Obeta, who is 50 years old and served as a go-between in the scheme, were both found guilty as well. They, too, will have their sentences handed down on Friday.
After nearly 14 hours of deliberation, the jury decided that the Ekweremadus’ daughter Sonia, who is 25 years old, was not guilty of the same charge. Sonia wept as they announced their decision.

Donating a kidney is not allowed in exchange for money or other goods in the United Kingdom, despite the fact that the practice is legal there.

It was the first time that charges for a conspiracy involving organ harvesting had been brought in the United Kingdom under the Modern Slavery Act of 2015.

Under the terms of the legislation, the maximum possible sentence is life in prison.

The Metropolitan Police’s Modern Slavery and Exploitation Command’s Detective Inspector Esther Richardson referred to the conviction as a “landmark conviction” and expressed gratitude to the victim for his “bravery” in coming forward with information.
The victim, a 21-year-old man from Lagos who cannot be named for legal reasons, testified during the trial that the Ekweremadus had flown him to Britain in order to harvest his kidney. The victim’s testimony lasted for several weeks.

It was speculated that Sonia, who has a renal condition and continues to receive dialysis treatment, would receive the kidney in exchange for a payment of up to £7,000 ($8,800).

The man claimed that a doctor who worked for the politician had recruited him, and that he had been under the impression that he would be coming to the UK to work.
The prosecution told the court that he didn’t learn it was for a kidney transplant until he was transported to the Royal Free Hospital in London the previous year.

After some preliminary tests, the doctors there informed him that he would not be a suitable donor. He ran away and slept on the streets for three days after they broke the news to him.
The court was told that eventually he walked into a police station and said he was “looking for someone to save my life.” This occurred in May of last year.

Ike Ekweremadu told the jury that he feared he was being “scammed,” despite the insistence of the attorneys for the four accused that their client was acting “altruistically.”

Since 2003, Ekweremadu has been the People’s Democratic Party’s representative for the Enugu West constituency, which is located in the southeast region of Nigeria.

This week, leaders in Nigeria’s parliament made an appeal to a court in London for clemency. They argued that Ekweremadu was a first-time offender who had made valuable contributions to politics in West Africa, and they argued that the court should show him mercy.

Due to the fact that he was detained both before and during the course of the trial, he did not participate in the most recent National Assembly elections.

The judge at the trial agreed with the prosecutors that it was possible for him to attempt to flee the UK. His daughter and wife had been freed on bail, subject to certain conditions.

According to Chief Crown Prosecutor Joanne Jakymec, it was a “horrific plot,” and she accused the defendants of having “utter disregard for the victim’s welfare, health, and wellbeing.”

There are approximately 7,000 people in the United Kingdom who are currently waiting for a kidney transplant from a suitable donor while approximately 20 people are diagnosed with kidney failure every single day. This results in the need for extended dialysis treatment.

Fiona Loud, policy director at the charity Kidney Care UK, told AFP that informed consent is “a vital part of the organ donation programme” and that thorough checks are made to ensure that “no coercion” is used during the donation process.

She described voluntary donations as “an act of great generosity” in her speech.

“No Single Govt Finishes Every Job” — Presidency Defends Leaving Behind Incomplete Projects

The Presidency has defended President Muhammadu Buhari’s inability to finish certain projects in Nigeria before the end of his term on May 29. This date marks the end of Buhari’s second and final term in office.

According to an article that was published on Thursday night by Femi Adesina, who is the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, it was reported that Buhari is doing a good job of finishing his term.

Adesina stated that a number of projects, including the Lagos-Ibadan Motorway, the Second Niger Bridge, and many others, will be completed before the current president leaves office and hands over power to the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, in the upcoming weeks.

He wrote that the Lagos-Ibadan Motorway would be constructed soon. Before the new administration takes office on May 29, numerous infrastructure projects, including the Second Niger Bridge, will be completed. There is no one government that can successfully complete all of the tasks that need to be done in a country. Nowhere on the face of the planet.

“President Buhari has completed his duty in an honourable manner. He has done very well for himself. And the imprint of his steps will be etched indelibly into the sands of history.

United Nigeria Airlines Targets Regional, Int’l Flight

United Nigeria Airlines Aims to Establish Both Regional and International Flights

United Nigeria Airlines announced that it will begin regional as well as international flight operations in a short amount of time after it was recently added to the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) registry.

This information was divulged by the chief operating officer of United Nigeria Airlines, Maxi Osita Okonkwo, during the presentation of the IOSA award to the airline by the representatives of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), West and Central Africa, Dr. Samson Fatokun, at the airline’s office in Lagos. The award was given out by Dr. Samson Fatokun.

Okonkwo revealed that the airline’s acquisition of the IOSA certificate in fewer than two years following the launch of its operations is one step towards the airline’s long-term goals of expanding its operations to regional and international levels.

He went on to say that being on the IOSA register was a necessary condition and requirement for venturing into the international market, and he described the process as an eye-opener.
According to him, “It was a serious process that opened up our eyes to many different things, and this is one step towards our long-term objectives because we have plans of going regional and international, and being on the IATA register is a necessary condition and requirement.” We are ecstatic, and we insist that you keep an eye on this space because we will be making additional announcements in the coming days, weeks, and months. The IOSA audit programme was a very serious one, and it enlightened us to a great deal of information regarding a great deal of information. It is both a privilege and a responsibility to have this opportunity, but we have managed to rise to the challenge and emerge victorious as a result. We would like to express our gratitude to our team, in particular those members who have put in a significant amount of time, including hours, days, and months, in order to get us to this point. We would also like to extend our gratitude to IATA and the audit team, who travelled from all over the world.

I can tell you that we achieved that two years of starting operations, however, it won’t have been easy without support from the stakeholders and regulators, as stated by Okonkwo. “When we started operation from day one, we made this part of our programmes and our chairman said anything we need to do to be internationally recognised, to be in IATA register, we should do it within two years of our operations.”
Also speaking, the IATA representative in West and Central Africa, Dr. Samson Fatokun, revealed that United Airlines has joined the list of a select few airlines in the subregion that is registered with the IOSA registry.

According to him, there are six airlines hailing from Nigeria that are included on the IOSA register; as a result, Nigeria is the only nation in Africa to hold the highest IOSA certificate.

On the other hand, he cautioned the airline operator that keeping a presence in the registry is a difficult and time-consuming task, as the majority of airlines discover that it is difficult to keep their status.

“It’s a great opportunity for us at IATA to present the prestigious IOSA certificate to any airline,” Fatokun said. “We know what it takes to achieve that feat, and as you said, in less than two years of your operation, you are already at this level where you can be said to have adhered to the global safety standard at its best.” The IOSA stands for the International Air Transport Association, which is an international organisation that regulates the aviation industry. That is a very impressive accomplishment, and we would like to extend our congratulations to you for achieving it. We would also like to extend our congratulations to the team that worked so hard. It is an admirable accomplishment, but staying at that level requires a greater level of effort and commitment. There are airlines that get there but are unable to maintain their stay because of the weather. We are unable to accept anything other than this, and you have performed exceptionally well. IOSA is both a step towards and an end in the process of achieving higher levels, such as membership in IATA and a great deal more.

We have very few airlines in the West and Central Africa region that are on the IOSA registry at the moment, and you are one of the few. That is very good for an airline that came onboard in less than 2 years, and we hope that you will be able to maintain that. “We have very few airlines in the West and Central Africa region that are on the IOSA registry at the moment. It is by far the only country in Africa that has this number of IOSA member airlines, as Nigeria is home to six airlines that are included on the IOSA registry. No other country on the African continent, not even South Africa, exists. I’d like to offer my congratulations to the operators in Nigeria.
However, Fatokun disclosed that the IOSA safety audit is meant to complement the safety audit conducted by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), not to compete with it.

“The IOSA backs the governing body, the NCAA, and the two of us are cooperating towards the achievement of a single objective, which is safety, which is our top priority. We can see the result in terms of safety on our flight and safety record as a country as a result of working with NCAA, the local regulator to achieve this. Because of this, IOSA has not come to take over from them but rather to support each other.

“It’s a symbiotic relationship that ensures the same goal of keeping our flight safe is accomplished,” said the pilot. It also indicates that you are on par with other international carriers because we adhere to the same standards and rigours in terms of safety, as he stated in his conclusion.

APC Governors Support Akpabio for Senate President – Ganduje

0

Abdullahi Ganduje, the Governor of Kano State, made the announcement that other governors who are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have decided to assign the position of Senate President to the South-South geopolitical region of the country.

Previously, the governors who are members of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) made the suggestion that the position of Senate President ought to be allocated to either the South-east or the South-south region.

They also suggested that the positions of majority leader, deputy majority leader, and chief whip should be used as compensation for those who might be asked to step down from running for the position of four presiding officers. This was one of the ideas that was presented.

However, in a video that is currently making its way around the internet and was produced by African Independent Television (AIT), Mr. Ganduje confirmed that the APC governors have made the decision to support Godswill Akpabio, who is originally from the South-south region.

The video showed that Mr. Ganduje, along with some of his fellow governors, including Ben Ayade of Cross River State, were meeting with a few different people.

Mr. Ganduje gave his word that the plan of the zoning formula that the governors had proposed for the party would not be altered in any way, and he was certain of this.

“The Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will come from the South-south, and there will be no other person than the former governor of Akwa Ibom, the uncommon governor, the uncommon minister who will be the uncommon president of the senate,” he said. “The Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will come from the South-south.”

“Since we have reached a conclusion regarding that matter, we can now provide assurance to you. We are awaiting the day that the deal will be finalised in order to become the President of the Senate in Nigeria.
In his response, Mr. Ayade conveyed his gratitude to the governors of the APC for zoning the position of Senate President to his geopolitical region.

He extended his congratulations to Mr. Akpabio on his election to the position of Senate President.

“I want to also thank you very much for actually zoning the president of the Senate to South-south and to our brother from our neighbouring state who is also a part of Cross River State. I really appreciate it.” We honour him, and we are grateful that you have provided us with this opportunity.

The candidates vying for the nomination of senate president from the South-south geopolitical zone are Mr. Akpabio and Osita Izunaso, who is from the state of Imo.

Both Messrs. Akpabio and Izunaso have previous experience serving in the Senate for one full term of four years each. They are also said to have paid a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari in an effort to convince the president to make it easier for the zoning to be applied to their region.

Abia police confirm cop was beheaded, guarantee informant’s safety.

The decapitation of an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Aba on Tuesday was confirmed by the Abia State Police Command.

Geoffrey Ogbonna, the State Public Relations Officer, characterised the behaviour as heinous and strongly condemnable.

He appealed for reliable information on the perpetrators or anyone found in possession of a gun that might have been obtained illegally.

The public is urged to assist by providing reliable information on the perpetrators or anyone found in possession of a firearm that may have been obtained illegally, according to Ogbonna.

The “protection of identity” of the informant(s) is assured, he claimed.

In retaliation for their kingpin being shot dead by the police on Sunday, April 23, 2023, hoodlums beheaded the Aba police superintendent early on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, and threatened to keep the city’s residents and police on guard at all times.

Tinubu and Wike’s political relationship

0

English comedian Charles Spencer Chaplin once compared himself to a politician when discussing his career and the level of respect people accord him.

Hear him say, “I still only remain one thing, and that is a clown. It elevates me above any politician by a huge margin.

One of the greatest artists of all time, Chaplain had fervent political beliefs that tended to favour the welfare of the populace. He made reference to the deceitful nature of many politicians, which leads them to make promises they do not intend to keep.

A politician makes a fool of themselves by trying to fool the public and creating a trust deficit, whereas a comedian makes jokes for a living and to make people happy. The renowned director discussed how political loyalty is defined by current circumstances and how a friend today can turn into an arch-enemy tomorrow. Indeed, politicians are a unique breed.

In Nigeria, this is especially true. People would assemble to laugh at the ridiculousness of some of those we call leaders if our politicians weren’t so rapacious and callous to turn the majority of citizens into the poorest of the poor in the world, taking the shine out of their lives.

For instance, on Tuesday, Mr. Nyesom Wike, the departing governor of Rivers State, made a state broadcast! Why? to announce Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the incoming president, will be visiting the state for two days. You can only imagine what Wike would do if Tinubu were elected president since we are discussing a man who has not yet taken the oath of office!

The broadcast, however, was not the last. When the governor declares a state of emergency on Wednesday, when Tinubu is expected, the situation becomes even more absurd.

Having declared a public holiday, all government buildings were closed. Perhaps it would have been acceptable if he had stopped there, but Wike prevented shop owners from opening in some areas of the state because he views Tinubu’s first trip as the winner of the presidential election as a badge of honour for his state. And just how is that? Would the President-elect’s visit provide food for the thousands of people whose wayward action on Wednesday would make it impossible for them to make a living? Isn’t this an illustration of the impunity that has permeated Nigerian politics?

Read Also: NPA: FG plans to construct a new seaport in 2026.

You wonder how much the governor considered when making decisions like shutting down the state and if he actually sought advice from other branches of the government. Justice would be delayed or denied for many state residents due to the holiday he declared on Wednesday. Numerous defendants or accused parties who should have been in court would have been deprived of the chance to present their cases because the courts wouldn’t open. That does not take into account the state’s forced reduction in working hours, the number of schools that will be closed, or the numerous other ways the state would lose resources. It is beyond reckless executive action for a governor to sacrifice social, economic, educational, and other endeavours in order to appear favourable to the president-elect.

However, Wike’s actions are not as significant as his intentions. One of those who witnessed the governor’s anguish over how the Peoples Democratic Party treated him after he lost the presidential primary in May of last year included yourself.

When everyone, including Atiku and former presidents elected on the PDP platform, left the party after the 2015 elections, Wike and former governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State remained the only voices that spoke for and kept the party together, according to my article “Atiku, not Wike, is the problem,” which was published on August 18, 2022. That ought to mean something. Wike doesn’t currently have a significant stake in the PDP, though. A president retains control of the whip and can use it as he sees fit on anyone, whether they have erred in the past or are simply thinking about it, even if he reconciles with Atiku and the latter wins the election. There are no assurances that Wike will be relevant in the PDP after the election, especially considering how little the standard bearer valued him before the vote.

Despite the fact that the governor and his allies based their disagreement with the PDP establishment on the leadership’s North-heavy makeup, those with the ability to discern saw through this smokescreen. They were aware that Wike was battling more for his own survival. The politician is looking for another paradise after peeing in the PDP’s hell kitchen.

Wike has adopted Niccol Machiavelli’s totalitarian strategy of “the end justifies the means” in his struggle for survival. He is unconcerned with the costs to the residents of the state he is governor of.

As he framed the situation, the Rivers governor would currently be on a PDP reconciliation mission if this were not being done to protect enlightened self-interests but rather out of consideration for southern Nigeria. This is true because Nigeria has never needed a more active opposition party than it does right now. Therefore, Wike should cooperate with other party members to restart the PDP since Iyorcha Ayu, the man he wanted to leave the party, had already resigned. The people of Nigeria should feel secure knowing that the crucial task of holding the incoming All Progressives Congress administration accountable would be effectively checked by a powerful force. Sadly, the leading advocate for inclusivity from yesterday is now sleeping with a Muslim president-elect whose deputy is also Muslim.

And this is not meant to support our leaders’ propensity to uphold these fundamental principles. Any kind of dichotomy should be avoided at all costs as our nation develops. And those who use their positions to incite Nigerians against one another will suffer in the eyes of history. But how can someone who notices regional injustice fail to notice religious injustice?

The answer is that this is Nigeria, where morality is irrelevant and government is a business. Nobody in politics wants to be removed from office and left to fend for themselves. They still rely on politics for their livelihood, and it’s the only way to prevent them from becoming political fodder in the hands of allies they’ve made in high places.

Wike’s first step towards gaining a place in the new king’s court is to invite Tinubu to Port Harcourt. It serves as protection from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s ominous eyes. It will stop the public from querying the governor’s recent appropriation of state funds to ill-conceived projects at the whim and how he has come to control the entire state.

Having Tinubu inaugurate projects and shut down the state would, in the opinion of a man who has reduced development to building flyovers, bridges, and other things while the human resource in the state is wallowing in poverty, put him in good stead for patronage. Nevertheless, the latter is a member of the same political party that he disparaged before splitting with it.

All things considered, Wike’s political actions and future would be meaningless if he did not violate people’s rights for political gain. It remains to be seen how much he succeeds in the game he is playing with a political cynic like Tinubu.
