There is opposition as North-West supports Akpabio for Senate president

0

APC supporters in the North-Central region have protested over an alleged exclusion of the region from the 10th National Assembly’s leadership, which will take office on June 5.

The APC state chairmen in the North-West supported the decision of the national leadership of the party to appoint Senators Godswill Akpabio (South-South) and Barau Jibrin (North-West) to the positions of Senate President and Deputy Senate President, respectively.

The reported APC leadership decision regarding the Senate presidency and the position of the House of Representatives Speaker, however, was roundly criticised by North-Central stakeholders in separate press conferences held in Abuja on Sunday.

Tajudeen Abbas (Kaduna) and Benjamin Kalu (Abia) would take over as the next House leaders, while Akpabio (Akwa Ibom) and Barau (Kano) were rumoured to have been chosen for the Senate positions.

Dominic Alancha, the Convener of the North Central APC Stakeholders, however, stated in his speech on Sunday in Abuja, “10th National Assembly: We Demand Justice, Equity and Fairness for North Central Zone,” “We are forced to register our disappointment and to protest the decision of the APC leadership to zone two presiding positions, Deputy Senate President and Speaker in the 10th National Assembly in favour of the North-West to the total exclusion of the North-C.”

“Having won the 2023 presidential elections legitimately, we expect the APC leadership to be guided by the principles of justice and fairness in allocating leadership positions in the parliament. We had assumed that factors like commitment to the success of the party, contribution level, and the requirement for fairness, equity, and justice to all would guide the decision.”

The stakeholders stated that they were against the idea of allocating the Speaker of the House of Representatives position to the North-West zone because it would imply unfairness, undue favouritism, and the marginalisation of other zones.

In a communiqué released at the conclusion of an emergency meeting later on Sunday, the Forum of North-Central Former House of Representatives Members in the APC criticised the exclusion of the region.

Participants protest exclusion.

The group claimed in a communiqué titled “Need for Justice and Equity in Allocating Key Offices in the National Assembly” that the stance it had taken on the issue was in the best interests of the incoming Tinubu-led administration and for the overall welfare of Nigeria.

Idris Yakubu, a member of the Fourth Assembly who spoke on behalf of others, responded that the stakeholders had the duty to warn the party and Tinubu of the “dangers ahead if they decide to continue in their folly of doing what we heard they are thinking of doing.” This was in response to the question of whether aspirants from the North-Central should adhere to the APC zoning plan or fight for the right of the zone.

However, the APC chairmen in the North-West praised Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the party’s national leadership for their willingness to help the nation out of its socioeconomic binds by selecting Akpabio and Barau.

The APC chairmen who backed the Akpabio-Barau ticket also praised the President-Elect as impartial and detribalized as he prepared to assume the presidency on May 29.

The Jigawa State Chairman of the APC, Alhaji Aminu Sani, spoke on behalf of his colleagues in Kano on Sunday and praised the President-Elect for his maturity and patriotism, saying that this would change the country’s perception of ethnoreligious politics.

Only the Zamfara State APC chairman missed the meeting out of the seven states in the zone. Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, and Sokoto states were represented by those in attendance.

Sani stated that he and his fellow candidates believed the Akpabio-Barau ticket would result in effective leadership for the 10th National Assembly who would work tirelessly for the advancement of Nigeria.

“Barau Jibrin, for instance, is a man of integrity who has never been found wanting in all his national life and who is someone who is focused, so his decision to withdraw his ambition and accept to be Deputy Senate President clearly shows that he is a level-headed person and as such, he deserves praise,” Sani said.

The newly elected Senators were therefore urged by the North-West APC chairmen to support the choice of the President-Elect and the APC national leadership without animosity or disagreement so that Nigeria would have leaders who understand themselves and are willing to set aside their personal feelings for the sake of national development.

Defenders of Constitutional Democracy, a different group, applauded Tinubu and the APC leadership for supporting Abbas for the position of Speaker of the 10th House and argued that the North-West deserved to benefit from their dedication to the party.

In a statement titled “10th NASS Speakership: Group Hails Tinubu, APC’s Choice of Abass Tajudeen…Says North-West Deserves Reward for Loyalty, Hard Work,” the DCD convener Aliyu Abdullahi and the director of contact and mobilisation Chukwuma Okoro made the commendation.

According to the DCD, Abbas’ home region of the North-West, which received the highest percentage of votes for the APC in the presidential vote, deserved to “be rewarded with the Number Four position in the country.”

But on Sunday, the North-West Progressives Forum insisted that Abdulaziz Yari, a former chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and the former governor of Zamfara State, be elected as the next president of the Senate.

The forum argued that the reported zoning plan was still invalid and that neither the APC nor Tinubu had made any official statements regarding it.

Nasir Dambatta, the group’s convener, stated during a press conference on Sunday in Kaduna that there was no justification for allowing the South-South zone to claim the Senate Presidency since the presidency had been awarded to the South-West.

To avoid the mistakes of 2015, Renewed Hope Professionals, another pressure group within the APC, urged Tinubu to remain impartial during the election for the 10th Assembly’s leadership positions on Sunday.

The RHP’s National Coordinator, Kinu Kabirwa, issued the warning in an Abuja statement that we were able to obtain. He said that the president-elect’s neutrality was required because “the very cornerstone of a healthy democracy is the freedom of choice” and that “the imposition of candidates by those in positions of authority has led to a legitimacy crisis in the country since the return to democracy in 1999.”

Despite rumours of the APC’s zoning plan, a front-runner for the position of Speaker of the House, Aliyu Betara (APC/Borno), is scheduled to formally announce his candidature on Monday (today).

Amid reports of zoning against the North-Central region that Yusuf Gagdi represents, from Plateau State, he went ahead and declared for Speaker on Friday.

Meeting of NWC.

APC’s National Working Committee will hold a significant meeting on Monday to wrap up discussions on the leadership positions for the National Assembly, it was learned on Sunday.

Breaking: Bola Tinubu, the incoming president, makes new appointments.

The swearing-in ceremony is currently being prepared for as people count down to the inauguration ceremony in May.

Members of the Committee also include singer Chuddy K, Seyi Law, Toyin Abraham, Saheed Balogun, and Lawal Olakekan, aka Konga.

Before the general election, Eniola Badmus supported the APC’s presidential candidate.

10th NASS: APC group tells Tinubu to remain impartial

0

In an effort to avoid the mistakes of 2015, a pressure group within the All Progressives Congress operating under the banner of Renewed Hope Professionals called on Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, to remain impartial during the election for the 10th National Assembly’s leadership positions on Sunday.

The group, which was responding to allegations of efforts to endorse candidates for important Senate and House of Representatives positions, cautioned that any attempt by Tinubu to display partisanship would be ineffective.

The RHP’s national coordinator, Kinu Kabirwa, issued the warning in a statement. In it, he stated that he had to remain impartial because the freedom of choice is the very foundation of a strong democracy, and that “the imposition of candidates by those in positions of authority has led to a legitimacy crisis in the country since the return to democracy in 1999.”

Taking sides in the National Assembly’s leadership, he warned, “could compromise lawmakers’ ability to perform their duties and undermine the system of checks and balances, robbing the incoming administration of legitimacy and the healing that the nation so desperately needs.”

He claimed that as a supporter of competitive democracy, the incoming president must exhibit an unwavering dedication to ensuring equal opportunity for all competitors.

In the words of Kabirwa, “The Parliament operates on the principle of first among equals and any attempt to impose any form of leadership upon members may be counterproductive.

“Under the direction of His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari, the APC set a strong example in the primaries that resulted in the President-elect being chosen as the party’s flagbearer. When Mr. President insisted on a level playing field for all candidates, the world was introduced to the beauty of progressive politics. We must not renege on this admirable legacy.

“The President-elect must be viewed as a devout democrat who upholds the separation of powers doctrine, which is a cornerstone of the presidential system of government and a tenet of most democratic systems.

To keep this balance, the President-elect must refrain from interfering with the activities of the National Assembly.

The President must maintain his neutrality in order to guarantee that the National Assembly operates independently and without interference from outside sources.

The constitution establishes a system of checks and balances that enables each branch of government to oversee and control the others in order to prevent any one branch from acquiring excessive power.

“In conclusion, the President-elect must uphold the principles of democracy and maintain his neutrality to ensure the smooth operation of the new administration.

In order to establish credibility and prevent conflict and division that might make it difficult for the government to pass laws and deal with pressing issues, it is crucial for the incoming president to do this. This call for impartiality in the 10th National Assembly leadership contest should be heeded by the President-elect.

The Gegu LGA in Kogi State, the Sardauna Forest in Nasarawa State, and other kidnappers’ hideouts in nearby communities have been identified by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command as places where 58 kidnapped victims were being held hostage.

The bandits/kidnappers opened fire at the security team after spotting it, according to the Command’s spokeswoman, SP Josephine Adeh: “The shootout ensued when the bandits/kidnappers spotted the security team coordinated by the Police.

“The robbers were beaten, and after fleeing with varying degrees of bullet wounds, they left behind their victims.

“The rescue is a part of the Command leadership’s ongoing joint operations with other security agencies, vigilantes, and hunters from different local communities to combat violent crimes in the FCT, rescue victims, and apprehend offenders,” the statement reads.

The FCT Police Command’s Commissioner of Police, CP Haruna Garba, has vowed to continue his efforts to thwart any new threats to the safety and security of the city’s citizens.

In addition, “The Command would not give up until every resident held hostage by criminals was freed, and the perpetrators were brought to justice.

Residents were urged to work with the CP, particularly by being security-conscious and providing the Police with reliable information.

However, Tama Jonathan was hurt during the rescue effort and tragically passed away there and then.

“His family was subsequently granted access to his remains for burial.

“The other 58 rescued victims are being stabilised in the hospital and will be reunited with their families,” the statement continued.

I’m not lobbying to be Tinubu’s Chief of Staff — el-Rufai

0

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has denied rumours that he is vying for the position of Chief of Staff in President-elect Sen. Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

El-Rufai stated this to journalists in Gombe on Saturday.

According to reports, El-Rufai was in the state to inaugurate the construction of 550 housing units and the Gombe Geographic Information Systems (GOGIS) Service Centre.

He called the reports on the various portfolios assigned to him and published in national dailies “mere speculations.”
The governor stated that he is more interested in contributing to Nigeria’s development than in jockeying for positions.

El-Rufai stated that being in government was not the only way to contribute to Nigeria’s development, and that even if he was not in government, he would remain committed to the country’s progress.

“I haven’t had that conversation with the president-elect, and I don’t like to speculate.”

“I read in the newspapers about various portfolios assigned to me, but you know, I am a dedicated Nigerian.”

“I want to see my country progress, and whatever I can do to help the country develop, I will do.”

“But I don’t have to do it because I work in government.” Everyone who works in the private sector or in civil society makes a contribution.
“There is no one way to contribute to the country, and I will never stop working for Nigeria’s advancement,” he stated.

The governor stated that when he leaves office in the next 22 days, he will take a break but will be available to provide advice on how to move the country forward if needed.

“I will be in the private sector, not as a chief of staff.” “I’ll take a break and advise people like Governor Inuwa Yahaya if they need it,” he said.

On Tinubu’s presidency beginning May 29, El-Rufai stated that Nigerians would not be sorry for voting for the president-elect, emphasizing that better days were ahead for Nigerians under Tinubu.

Yusuf Gagdi Declares For Speaker Of House Of Representatives

0

Yusuf Gagdi, a former Deputy Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, has declared his intention to run for Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives.

The announcement was made at the unveiling of his manifesto and a compilation of his accomplishments in the 9th National Assembly in Abuja, according to reports.

Gagdi has pledged to lead a transparent House of Representatives and is actively seeking the support of elected lawmakers from other parts of the country, including other political parties.

The 42-year-old lawmaker from Plateau State’s Panskhin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency believes he has what it takes to lead the 10th House of Representatives.

The declaration comes ahead of the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly in June, and several elected federal lawmakers, as well as Gagdi’s friends and relatives, were present to support his ambition. Gagdi sponsored six private member bills in the 9th National Assembly, which President Muhammadu Buhari signed into law.

Gagdi has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President-elect Bola Tinubu to allow lawmakers to choose their leaders. He is determined to achieve his goal and is actively courting elected lawmakers from other political parties.

The lawmaker was elected to the Plateau State House of Assembly in 2015, where he served as Deputy Speaker, and he was elected to the House of Representatives in 2019.

80,000 candidates sit for rescheduled UTME – Official

0

On Saturday, the rescheduled Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) was administered all over the country, and no fewer than 80,000 candidates participated.

Dr. Fabian Benjamin, who serves as the Head of Public Affairs and Protocol for JAMB, made this statement while observing the exercise on Saturday in Abuja.

Benjamin reported that approximately 80,000 candidates who were unable to take the 2023 UTME within their allotted time due to circumstances that were beyond their control participated in the rescheduled UTME across the country.

According to him, candidates who were affected include those who had their data verified at their centres but were still unable to take the exam, candidates who were unable to have their biometrics verified, and candidates whose data did not match up properly.

Benjamin stated that the implementation of innovations during the administration of the test was successful, as evidenced by the fact that the activity recorded the fewest number of reported cases of infractions.

“The issue of examination malpractices was reduced to almost zero level in this year’s UTME,” he said. “I am very pleased with the results.”

Benjamin, when asked about the results of the rescheduled UTME, stated that the management of the board would evaluate the exercise’s conduct after it had been completed and make a decision based on their findings.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who also monitored the examination alongside the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has expressed satisfaction over the manner in which the rescheduled 2023 UTME has been carried out.

Adamu, who was present at a Computer Based Test (CBT) centre in Mambila Barracks, Asokoro, expressed his satisfaction with the way the exercise was carried out.

“I am very content with everything that I have observed. According to Adamu, both the (temporary) holding room (for candidates) and the arrangement in the conduct of the examination are in order.

The Minister, who stated that there were not any negative incidents recorded in the conduct of the UTME at the CBT centre, argued in favour of a temporary holding place for candidates who are waiting for the scheduled time of the exam to begin.

“There shouldn’t be any issues; have you noticed anything out of the ordinary?” Adamu suggested that there should be training for those who work in the holding room because he believes that this will be the only change made to the facility.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced on May 2 the results of candidates who had previously participated in the examination, which had begun on April 25.

May 29: Sam Amadi says it makes no sense to defend mandate after assuming power

0

Sam Amadi, who is the director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, has insisted that “the nation can’t build legitimate governance without electoral justice.”

According to him, it is “completely dumb” to run an electoral system that puts someone in power and then asks that person to defend his election as commander-in-chief. He called this practice “completely dumb.”

You may remember that Amadi asserted that the inauguration of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, could be delayed until after May 29, insisting that he has a serious case pending before the tribunal that could go either way.

In a tweet sent out on Sunday, the former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, also known as NERC, urged those who disagreed with him to “get on electoral justice and exit the track of electoral triumphalism.”

He wrote that people who believe they have a lot of intelligence ought to be giving serious consideration to the years to come. A new government will take office in Nigeria with a mandate that is both limited and contested. Consider how to handle this crisis on top of a state power that is nearly extinct rather than how to make the most of your time at Aso Rock.

“We have got to get off this path of electoral triumphalism and onto the path of electoral justice. This culture of “grab it, smash it” or “do die” is what caused the downfall of all of the republics that came before it. Building a legitimate government is impossible in the absence of electoral justice. Let’s not waste time badmouthing Sam but rather find out the truth.

“You can begin today to think about how we operate an electoral system that does put someone in power and asks him to defend his election as commander-in-chief in a third world country. You can start thinking about this right now. In risk analysis and engineering, that is the epitome of stupidity. Start thinking about how to fix it for the year 2027, assuming that it will come.

Buhari is seeking Senate confirmation for NEDC board members

On Friday, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired), the president, requested confirmation from the Senate for the appointment of 12 candidates to the North-East Development Commission’s Governing Board.

The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said in a statement that Buhari’s request was made in a letter dated May 3, 2023, and addressed to Senate President Ahmed Lawan.

According to the provisions of Part 1, Section 2(5)(b) of the North-East Development Commission Establishment Act of 2017, it stated: “I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of twelve (12) nominees as tabulated below, in the Governing Board of the North East Development Commission.

The tenure of the current North-East Development Commission Governing Board will expire on May 7, 2023, and the Senate is invited to take note.

The candidates are: Barr. Bashir Baale, Chairman (North-East, Yobe); Suwaiba Baba, Executive Director, Humanitarian Affairs; Musa Yashi, Executive Director, Administration and Finance; Dr. Ismaila Maksha, Executive Director, Operations; and Umar Hashidu, MD/CEO, (North-East, Gombe).

Other members include Grema Ali (North-East, Borno), Onyeka Gospel-Tony (South-East), Mrs. Hailmary Aipoh (South-South), Air Commodore Babatunde Akanbi (Retd), Mustapha Ibrahim, Hadiza Maina, and a representative from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning.

Buhari expressed his hope that the Senate would grant his request “with the customary prompt consideration and confirmation.”

For the implementation of all programmes and initiatives for the North East states, namely Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe, the NEDC assesses, coordinates, harmonises, and reports on all intervention programmes and initiatives by the Federal Government or any of its Ministries, Departments and Agencies, States, and other Development Partners.

The President officially swore in the new commission board on May 9, 2019. The company’s managing director, Mohammed Alkali, was charged in March 2023 by two transparency and civil society organisations with mismanaging budgetary allocations totaling N146.19 billion.

In 2022, three media outlets, 66 Nigerian journalists attacked: Report

0

In the year 2022, at least 66 journalists working in Nigerian media outlets and three media houses were victims of various forms of assault.

On Friday, the Programme Officer of the International Press Centre, Mrs. Melody Akinjiyan, made this information public while presenting a report on attacks on journalists in 2022 at the World Press Freedom Day Media Roundtable and Stakeholders’ Forum on Journalists’ Safety and Protecting Freedom of Expression in the Age of Misinformation and Disinformation in Ibadan, Oyo State. The report was part of the World Press Freedom Day Media Roundtable and Stakeholders’ Forum.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the event was put on by the IPC in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oyo State Council, and with financial support from the Open Society Foundation.

The IPC Director, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, is said to have been responsible for launching the centre for the safety and protection of journalists, according to NAN.

According to Akinjiyan, the alarming increase in the number of reported assaults on journalists from over 40 incidents in 2021 to 66 incidents in 2022 was documented in the year 2022.

She enumerated the various types of assaults as follows: physical assault (24), abduction (seven), gun attack (1), threats to life (2), threat to disclose source/intimidation (2), invasion (1), media shutdown (1), and robbery (1).

Other examples include the hacking of an account (1), the denial of access to information (1), harassment (2), unlawful arrest and detention (21) and the threat of sanctions or payments of fines (2).

“There are 10 female journalists and 56 male journalists in total. There are a total of thirteen print journalists, twenty-six broadcast journalists, twenty-four online media practitioners, and three other individuals.

Twenty-six of the journalists are from the South West, sixteen are from the North Central, ten come from the South South, six come from the North East, four come from the North West, and ten come from the South East.

She stated that the states that were affected by the incident include Zamfara, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kwara, Gombe, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, Lagos, Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Enugu, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja.

The programme officer stated that the various attacks, as they have been reported, were allegedly carried out by security agencies, political thugs, armed robbers, and militant groups such as the Islamic State’s of West Africa Province.

However, Akinjiyan urged journalists to demonstrate a greater sense of solidarity in the face of attacks on the media and abuses of the rights of colleagues working in the same profession.

She went on to explain that the figures that were compiled were the only ones that had been reported out of the several cases that had not been reported, and she urged journalists to report information about attacks to the IPC.

Akinjiyan urged journalists to always put issues concerning attacks on journalists, the safety of journalists, freedom for journalists, and the welfare of journalists at the forefront of their work.

While Arogundade was introducing the International Committee to Protect Journalists (I-CSPJ), he stated that the organization’s mission was to contribute to the future of rights by advocating for and promoting the safety of journalists.

He stated that the establishment’s other purpose was to raise awareness on the necessity of protecting journalists, particularly because these individuals serve as workers on the frontline during times of crisis or emergency.

“The overarching framework for the establishment of I-CSPJ is the strategic objective of expanding the frontiers of press freedom in Nigeria and Africa; the safety of journalists is an integral part of this process.”

Because of this, the objective of the International Centre for Journalists’ Safety and Security (I-CSPJ) is to advocate for and promote the safety of journalists.

“and creating awareness on the imperative of protecting journalists especially as they serve as frontline workers during crisis or emergency situations,” he said. “[This] is particularly important given the role that journalists play during times of crisis or emergency.”

“Shaping a future of rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights,” was going to be the theme of the 2023 World Press Freedom Day, according to the chairman of the IPC.

According to Arogundade, the theme suggested that the right to freedom of expression, which includes the freedom of the press as an embedded component, was the forerunner of other human rights.

According to NAN, the discussion at the roundtable resulted in a number of recommendations, one of which was the sponsorship of a regulatory bill for the practise of journalism.

The insurance scheme, improved emoluments, and welfare package options for journalists were among the other topics that were brought up during the discussion.

According to NAN, presentations were given at the event by Professor Tokunbo Adaja, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Joseph Ayo Babalola University, as well as Chief Ademola Babalola, Chairman of the Oyo State NUJ.

Others who attended the event included Mr. Bolaji Adeniyi, Vice-President (West) of the Nigeria Guild of Editors, and Mrs. Bolanle Ismail, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at Crescent University in Abeokuta.
