Oyo armed robbers kill father, rape daughters

A syndicate that murdered a middle-aged man named Makanjuola Ogedengbe and sexually assaulted his two daughters in the village of Apaatuku/Onireke in the Lagelu Local Government area of the state was among the 21 suspected armed robbers paraded by the Oyo State Police Command on Friday.

The victims were young children, 14 and 10, respectively.

The suspects were displayed at the command’s headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, according to Adewale Osifeso, Public Relations Officer for the Oyo State Police, who claimed that they were providing the police with useful information.

Osifeso claimed that on Sunday, May 14, 2023, at around 2:00 am, the suspects—who were carrying lethal weapons—invaded the neighbourhood, robbing locals of their valuables while shooting the deceased at close range.

According to him, a group of armed robbers entered the Apaatuku/Onireke at Akobo area of Ibadan on May 14, 2023, at around 4:00 a.m., and took valuables from the locals. One Makanjuola Ogedengbe was killed by the attackers, who also sexually assaulted his two daughters, who were 14 and 10, at the time.

“For a covert investigation, the case was given to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku. Abiodun Olalekan, 32, Ibrahim Rasaq, 31, and Abolade Morenikeji, 34, were previously detained in connection with the armed robbery at Sawia Estate in Ogbere, Ibadan, which was reported on April 16, 2023. It was later discovered that these men belonged to the same gang that broke into the Apaatuku/Onireke community.

“Abolade Morenikeji’m’ and one Sodiq’m’ are accused of raping the two daughters of the deceased, respectively. The operation resulted in the death of the aforementioned Sodiq, who was the group’s alleged leader. The night guard for the neighbourhood was also shot by the assailants and is currently receiving medical attention.

“One Adebayo Salami’m’, a major receiver/informant of the group and landlord at Ajara Olohunda, Akobo in Ibadan, was detained in connection with the case on June 16, 2023, at around 03300 hours.

He admitted, “during questioning, that he had invited the group for the robbery operation at the Apaatuku area where one Makanjuola Ogedengbe’m’ was killed and his two daughters, aged 14 and 10, were deflowered by the robbery gang during the operation.”

Additional suspects for crimes like attempted murder, armed robbery, unlawful firearm possession, and possession of what is thought to be Indian hemp were also paraded by the police.

PSC approves Mba, Ciroma’s appointments as DIGs

Frank Mba and Bala Ciroma, who were previously assistant inspectors general of police, have been appointed as deputy inspectors general of police with the approval of the Police Service Commission.

Ikechukwu Ani, the PSC’s spokesperson, said this in a statement on Friday.

Ani pointed out that DIG Ciroma will take DIG Ali Janga’s place as the North-East geopolitical zone’s representative on the Police Management Team, while DIG Mba will take the place of retired DIG John Amadi as the South-East zone’s representative.

“DIG Ciroma, the highest ranking zone officer, will going forward represent the zone. In place of retired DIG John Amadi, who previously represented the zone, DIG Mba will represent the South-East zone, according to a statement.

The commission also approved the promotion of 22 Deputy Commissioners of Police to the substantive rank of Commissioners and the promotion of 14 Commissioners of Police to the next rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police.

According to the PSC, these decisions marked the high points of the commission’s 21st plenary, which was presided over by its chairman, De Solomon Arase, a former inspector general of police, and was attended by all of the commission’s members, including Dr. Ifeoma Anyanwutaku, the permanent secretary/secretary to the commission.

Abubakar Lawal, Alhassan Aminu, Abdul Umar, Shettima Zannah, Ebong Eyibio Ebong, Adepoju Ilori, and Okon Effiong, all former CPs, are the new AIGs.

Echeng Echeng, Susan Horsfall, Bankole Lanre Sikiru, Oladimeji Olarewaju, Sani Gwarzo, and Odama Ojeka are additional former CPs.

Abibo Reuben, Thomas Nabhoni, Wakil Salamai, Enyinnaya Inonachi, Ronke Okunade, and Adekunle Olusokan are among the 22 former deputy commissioners of police who have been promoted to the rank of chief police officers.

Aside from Hassan Yabnet, Festus Oko, Aminu Raji, Omolara Oluntola, Akoh Gabriel, Alamutu Mustapha, Bafda Jahun, Ahmadu Abdullahi, and Mohammed Mu’azu, they also include CPs.

Bretet Simon, Ihebom Chukuma, Shettima Qurtu, Olatokunbo Olabisi, Yusuf Lawal, Monica Leo, and Abaniwonda Olufemi are additional former DCPs.

The promotion of 24 Assistant Commissioners of Police to the position of DCPs was also approved by the commission.

They include Wan Chongs, Commander PMF 19 Port Harcourt; Baba Audu, Area Commander, Exeter Akwa-Ibom State Command; Mohammed Shamsudeen, Assistant Director, OPS, Kaduna (NCCSALW); Khan Usman, Networking Admin ICT FHQ, Abuja; and Ezekiel Ibrahim, Project Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Kashim Shettima, vice president, has expressed regret for his remark regarding the election of the leaders of the 10th Assembly to the Muslim community.

Shettima stated, “Under the current dispensation, the worst incompetent Southern Christian is better than the most puritanical Northern Muslim for the Presidency of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria” in a meeting with lawmakers prior to the National Assembly election.

Particularly on social media, the remark sparked a contentious debate.

Shettima, however, claimed in an interview with BBC Hausa that his comments had been misinterpreted and that he had no desire to disparage his religion.
The comment I made, he claimed, was for Nigeria’s benefit but was misunderstood. I am provided with private intelligence reports that should not be made public.

I genuinely didn’t intend to hurt anyone or the Islamic faith in any way. I do, however, ask for forgiveness from my Lord and the rest of the community because I am a flawed human being. It was never my intention to disparage any religion, so I sincerely apologise to anyone who was offended by my statement.

EFCC invites eight Buhari ministers over allegations of corruption

In line with reports, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is the nation’s anti-corruption organisation, has extended invitations to eight former ministers who served in President Muhammadu Buhari’s previous administration. These individuals worked for the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to reports, these former ministers have been summoned for questioning in connection with allegations of corrupt behaviour.

These senior government officials were sent invitation letters that specifically asked them to explain how the funds that had been allotted to their respective ministries for specific projects during their terms had been used up. This request was included in the invitation letters that were sent to them.

Due to the fact that the anti-corruption agency’s investigations were already underway at the time, the letters were dispatched prior to Abdulrasheed Bawa’s suspension from his position as chairman of the commission.

According to reports, those who have been called include Pauline Tallen, a former minister of women’s affairs who was invited to participate in an investigation last week in connection with an alleged fraud involving N2 billion. Among the allegations is the claim that funds intended for the African First Lady Peace Mission Project were instead used for another purpose. Additionally, invitations have been extended to a total of seven additional former ministers.

It is essential to take note that the commission detained and arrested Sale Mamman, who served as President Buhari’s Minister of Power during the previous administration, in the past month. An investigation is being conducted into him at the moment because of his alleged participation in a fraud involving power projects that cost N22 billion.

In addition, Hadi Sirika, a former minister of aviation, and Abubakar Malami, a former minister of justice and attorney general of the federation, have been asked by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to provide clarification on certain matters relating to their time spent in office.

There have been allegations that Senate President Godswill Akpabio revealed how senators voted for him, which has led to criticism of Akpabio.

Akpabio’s behaviour was deemed to be lacking in statesmanship by Deji Adeyanju, a sociopolitical activist.

Adeyanju has stated that Akpabio’s action of disclosing how senators voted may cause a rift within the Senate.

In a tweet, the activist for human rights recalled that in 2015, the then-current Senate President, Bukola Saraki, tore up the list.

According to Adeyanju, what Senate President Akpabio did to his colleagues by publicly exposing those who voted for or against him is not statesmanlike and will cause division within the Senate.

“He is the first President of the Senate to ever do such a thing. In 2015, after receiving the list from the Sergeant at Arms, Saraki promptly shredded it. ”

For the position of President of the Senate, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chose to back Akpabio as their candidate.

Tinubu requests thorough investigation in response to Kwara boat accident

Following the boat accident that resulted in numerous fatalities, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) has commiserated with the people of Kwara State and ordered a thorough investigation.

The Patigi Local Government Area (LGA) of Kwara on Monday saw a boat accident that resulted in at least 103 fatalities, according to the Kwara State Police Command.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Abiodun Oladunjoye, Tinubu expressed his “deep sorrow” over the news of the tragic boat accident that claimed the lives of his people in Kwara State.

“The tragic accident was made worse by the fact that the victims were attendees at a wedding ceremony.

“To identify the immediate and underlying causes of this unfortunate accident, the Kwara State Government and pertinent federal agencies should collaborate.

The President stated that victims’ families and survivors should also receive the immediate relief and support they need.

The deceased were all returning from a wedding in the neighbouring Niger State on Monday when the boat carrying them capsized, according to SP Ajayi Okasanmi of the Kwara Police.

Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim Liman, the chairman of the Transition Implementation Committee in Patigi LGA, reported that about 110 passengers perished in the collision.

On the other hand, the governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, expressed sympathy to the residents of Patigi for the boat accident that claimed many lives while leaving some people unaccounted for.

The governor expressed his sadness in a statement on Tuesday regarding the reports of the boat accident involving several people, particularly residents of Ebu, Dzakan, Kpada, Kuchalu, and Sampi, all of which are located in Patigi.

INEC chair, Mahmood Yakubu, to testify in Atiku’s suit challenging Tinubu’s victory

Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, will testify Thursday before the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja.

Mr. Yakubu will testify in Atiku Abubakar’s petition challenging President Bola Tinubu’s 25 February presidential victory.

Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, accused INEC and APC leader Tinubu of poll manipulation.

On Tuesday, his lead counsel, Chris Uche, informed the five-member court panel chaired by Haruna Tsammani that Mr. Yakubu would appear on Thursday.

Atiku’s legal team subpoenaed Mr. Yakubu to testify on the disputed election.
He must also provide sensitive electoral documents to support the petitioner.

Mr Uche, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), informed INEC, Mr Tinubu, and APC’s legal teams of Mr Yakubu’s Thursday appearance to avoid any delays.

Atiku calls first star witness

After calling 18 witnesses to testify for the petitioner, Mr Uche, on Tuesday, called his client’s first star witness.

The witness, Alex Ter, a lawyer and former Attorney General of Benue State, in his testimony, alleged that the February presidential poll was fraught with widespread irregularities as it was conducted in disregard of the Electoral Act, 2022.

In his witness statement on oath, Mr Ter said he was the national coordinator Situation Room for the PDP during the February 25 presidential election in Abuja.

He presented three video clips featuring INEC chair Mr Yakubu and INEC’s Commissioner for Voter Education, Festus Okoye, who both pledged that the electoral umpire would electronically transmit the election results.

The third video concerned the European Union Election Observer Mission, which was admitted as an exhibit by the court.

Also, the court admitted the guidelines for election officers 2022 and the manual for election guidelines 2023 as exhibits.

Mr Ter also tendered screenshots of the INEC IReV portal.

Despite Mr Tinubu and APC’s objections to the admissibility of the documents, the court admitted the videos played in court.

Rotimi Akeredolu, the governor of Ondo State, informed the legislature in a letter to the state House of Assembly on Tuesday that he would be taking a 21-day medical leave.

The governor also informed the Assembly that he had delegated his duties as governor while he was away to Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Deputy Governor.

While the majority of his official tasks are being completed by his assistants on his behalf, Akeredolu, who is reportedly ill, has stayed away from public scenes recently.

At many government events, both official and social, Akeredolu was represented by the deputy governor, though other aides occasionally filled in for the governor.

The receipt of the governor’s letter requesting medical leave was confirmed by the Assembly’s Speaker, Mr. Olamide Oladiji, on Tuesday.

The governor has started a 21-day leave for medical treatment abroad, starting on June 7, 2023, and ending on July 6, 2023, the Speaker announced.

The Speaker stated that in the event of the governor’s absence, the deputy governor would serve in that capacity until Akeredolu returns to the state on 6 July.

Oladiji wished the governor a speedy recovery and a happy vacation and described him as a supporter of peace and an advocate for the rule of law.

The opposition Social Democratic Party and Peoples Democratic Party had previously expressed concern about the governor’s whereabouts, with the SDP last week demanding that the governor turn over control of the state to his deputy.

The SDP stated that while it was still praying for Akeredolu’s recovery, “the state should not and cannot be left without a constitutional head in an acting capacity while he (Akeredolu) is away attending to his health.”

The SDP noted that Akeredolu was neither present nor represented at President Bola Tinubu’s two meetings with state governors chosen on the APC platform in the previous week, according to the SDP.

“Nationally significant topics were discussed at each of those meetings. Almost all of the governors attended, and those who couldn’t attend had their deputies stand in for them. Our dear Ondo State is the only state that was glaringly absent in terms of representation at the two meetings, the SDP lamented.

Similar to this, the PDP stated in a statement released by its publicity secretary, Mr. Kennedy Peretei, “As mortals, any human being can become ill, whether in public office or private life. It is illegal and a great disservice to withhold information about Rotimi Akeredolu’s whereabouts and employment because he is supported by the tax dollars of the people of Ondo State.

The PDP responded by saying Akeredolu did the right thing by writing to the Assembly.

“Transmitting power to the deputy governor in the event that the governor is leaving on a medical vacation is nothing extraordinary. The media rumours and angst were able to flourish because of the space that Akeredolu’s handlers had created.

“However, the state Assembly’s letter has provided all the information required to answer the question of Akeredolu’s location. We believe that in politics, doing the right thing must always be the priority.

On Tuesday, the Coalition of United Political Parties congratulated the members of the 10th National Assembly on their successful inauguration and referred to it as a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic process.

The organisation urged them to innovate and be creative when making laws in a way that would demonstrate competence and be a clear break from the rubber stamp nomenclature of the past.

According to the group, Nigeria can no longer afford a status quo approach to governance and needs to make a radical change from a sluggish leadership that is held captive by forces hostile to the security of the nation and the well-being of Nigerians.

The coalition advised them in a statement by Mark Adebayo, a national co-spokesperson, that they should never let the privileges and perks of office separate them from the realities of the people.

As the 10th National Assembly was formally inaugurated today, he declared, “Nigeria’s democracy has reached another significant turning point. It is a well-known fact that the legislature is an essential branch of government in every democracy because it serves as a forum for the people’s elected officials to discuss and enact laws that directly affect the lives of Nigerians and the future of the nation.

While we congratulate the Distinguished Senators and the Honourable members of the House of Representatives on their successful inauguration today, we implore them to keep in mind the fundamental goals of their mandate, which is to promote the welfare of their constituents as a whole. We implore them to uphold the hopes and expectations of the Nigerian people when enacting laws and performing other legislative duties rather than succumbing to the pressures of political correctness at the expense of the majority of Nigerians.

“Let Nigerians see you as their true representatives—people who are sensitive to their suffering, cognizant of their difficulties, and determined to provide them with effective representation that will ease their problems and uphold their hopes for a better life and future.

“We urge you to innovate and be creative when enacting laws in a way that demonstrates competence and marks a significant departure from the rubber stamp terminology of the past. Let your patriotism take precedence over your politics. Put Nigerians’ needs ahead of your political allegiances. Do not let your feelings override your sense of justice.

Keep your eyes and ears open to the needs and aspirations of Nigerians. Never let the benefits and privileges of your job separate you from the realities of the people you are supposed to be representing. Your performance on that task will determine how well you managed the 10th National Assembly as a whole and how well you did overall in terms of the national scorecard.

“Nigeria can no longer afford to approach governance in the same way it has in the past. We need a radical change from the sluggish leadership that is being held captive by forces hostile to the security and well-being of Nigerians. To rescue Nigeria from her multifaceted poverty, protracted stagnation, and shameful regression, concerted efforts are now needed.

“The CUPP shall continue to be steadfast in its oversight of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government, and shall not be averse to calling the appropriate agencies and organs of government to order when warranted. We will make sure to be motivated by a patriotic commitment to Nigeria’s and Nigerians’ collective welfare as we carry out these demanding opposition activism.
