Any attempt to suppress right to peaceful protest unconstitutional

0

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has defended the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to engage in peaceful protest, amid growing economic challenges and reports of planned demonstrations.

In a statement on Tuesday via X, Atiku emphasised the legal basis for public demonstrations, saying, “For the avoidance of doubt, the rights of citizens to protest are enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and affirmed by our courts.”

He cited Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which “unequivocally guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and association.”

The former Vice President criticised attempts to discourage or prevent protests, saying, “Chasing shadows and contriving purported persons behind the planned protests is an exercise in futility when it is obvious that Nigerians, including supporters of Tinubu and the ruling APC, are caught up in the hunger, anger, and hopelessness brought about by the incompetence and cluelessness of this government.”

Atiku also highlighted what he sees as hypocrisy among those currently in power

He said, “It is deeply ironic that those who now seek to stifle these rights were themselves leading protests in 2012.”

The statement further called on the government to fulfil its responsibilities in safeguarding citizens’ rights.

“A responsible government must ensure a safe and secure environment for citizens to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed rights to peaceful protest,” Atiku stated.

He further warned about the implications of suppressing protests.

“Any attempt to suppress these rights is not only unconstitutional but a direct affront to our democracy,” he added.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday appealed to Nigerians who plan to stage nationwide hunger protests to shelve the plan.

He also called on citizens to give his administration enough time to respond to their requests.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed this to State House Correspondents after closed-door talks with President Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.

He said, “On the issue of the planned protest, Mr. President does not see any need for that. He asked them to shelve that plan and he has asked them to await government’s response to all their pleas.

“So, there is no need for strike. The young people out there should listen to the President and allow the President more time to see to the realisation of all the goodies he has for them.”

His comments come days after calls for nationwide protests from August 1-10 against the rising cost of living and the economic hardship.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has issued a formal apology to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for remarks he made during last week’s plenary session, where he rebuked her and said the Senate is not a “nightclub.”

Addressing the Senate during Tuesday’s plenary session, Akpabio expressed regret over his words and emphasized his respect for women.

He stated, “I will not intentionally denigrate any woman and I always pray that God will uplift women. Distinguished Senator Natasha, I want to apologise to you. The interest shown in the social media shows that we have enemies. I felt I should tender a public apology to you. I do not mean any harm. People should concentrate on things that will move this country forward. Social media handlers should practice with decorum. We won’t, out of anger, regulate social media.”
Additionally, Akpabio refuted claims circulating on social media regarding his personal life, stating firmly, “I have only one wife and she is enough for me.”

Lagos taskforce dislodges street traders in Ikeja

0

The Lagos State Taskforce has reported the removal of illegal street traders from Alade Avenue, Orishe Street, and Johnson Street, off Obafemi Awolowo Way in Ikeja, the state capital.

According to the agency, these traders had transformed the sidewalks into makeshift markets and restaurants, causing significant human and vehicular traffic disruptions as well as severe environmental pollution along these routes and surrounding streets.

Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, Director of Press & Public Affairs for the Lagos State Taskforce, made this announcement in a statement issued to our correspondent on Tuesday.

The statement reads in part: “In the interest of maintaining environmental decorum and upholding Lagos State’s Mega City status, the Lagos State Taskforce has expelled illegal street traders from Alade Avenue, Orishe Street, and Johnson Street, off Obafemi Awolowo Way. These areas had been converted into makeshift markets and restaurants, leading to severe human and vehicular traffic obstructions as well as significant environmental pollution along these routes and neighbouring streets.

“The two-day raid, led by the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele, took place at dusk, a period when illegal street traders typically set up makeshift shops and place barriers on the roads, causing traffic impediments for vehicles accessing these routes.”

He added that the traders’ activities “have also been observed to seriously violate the state’s environmental laws through the indiscriminate disposal of waste and solid materials into gutters, which clog canals and drainage systems in the metropolis.”

The statement continued: “CSP Akerele described the raids, which will be an ongoing exercise, as a necessary step for the welfare of the public, who have long sought solutions to the problem of street trading, which also fosters criminality.

“Some of these locations serve as safe havens for criminals who benefit from their illicit activities. The flooding experienced in certain parts of the state is also a result of improper waste disposal, which clogs drainage channels.”

He noted that the activities of street traders, particularly at Johnson Street during the night, were unacceptable on all levels.

“They sell drugs indiscriminately, which is detrimental to society and contributes significantly to traffic congestion on Awolowo Road during rush hour, causing workers who have spent the entire day at work to endure additional hours in traffic just to get home. This is unfair to the residents, and we will ensure that it is reduced to the bare minimum,” he said.

Akerele reaffirmed the State Government’s stance on street trading and assured that all efforts would be made to eliminate it.

He revealed that the Agency is collaborating with other relevant agencies to ensure environmental preservation as outlined in the THEMES PLUS agenda of the State Government.

The Chairman urged recalcitrant street traders and vendors to relocate their businesses to designated trading areas and vacate the streets and inner roads.

He said the Agency will thoroughly investigate areas where street trading has obstructed traffic flow and inconvenienced residents.

Residents with information regarding street blockages by illegal traders or other environmental violations are encouraged to contact the Agency via social media or visit its headquarters at Bolade Oshodi.

“We will continue to operate in line with the THEMES PLUS agenda of the State Government and the directives of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade.”

The statement concluded: “All suspects arrested were carefully screened; those with legitimate businesses were released, while others will face legal action.”

Imo East Senator, Francis Ezenwa, sumps LP for APC, cites party crisis

Francis Ezenwa, the Senator representing Imo East Senatorial District, has officially switched allegiance from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement of his defection was made during Tuesday’s plenary session by Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.
Ezenwa’s decision was detailed in a letter where he attributed the move to the internal crisis within the Labour Party and emphasized that his action aligns with constitutional provisions. Following the reading of his letter, Ezenwa was warmly received by APC lawmakers and escorted to his new seat within the APC section of the Senate Chamber.

Earlier in the day, the Senate made a procedural exception by suspending its rules to accommodate the presence of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and his delegation in accordance with Senate protocols.
Uzodimma, who also serves as the Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, was present to witness Ezenwa’s defection firsthand.

Desist from triggering man-made disasters – NSCDC warns Nigerians

0

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has issued a stern warning to Nigerians against activities that could lead to man-made disasters.
The Commandant-General of the corps, Ahmed Audi, gave the warning on Tuesday in Abuja.
Audi said that the Corps had consequently launched a nationwide campaign against building on waterways and indiscriminate disposal of wastes in water channels.
He said the sensitisation programme was a precautionary attempt to avert flood disasters that might emerge across the country as rainfall intensifies.
“This advocacy campaign which began at the NSCDC headquarters, down to some Area Councils in Abuja, is a proactive measure to mitigate against flooding associated with rainy seasons.
“It is so unfortunate that people dump refuse while some erect structures along waterways and without properly channelling the tide, during flooding, this can lead to loss of lives and property,” Audi said.
The CG added that the Corps was saddled with the statutory responsibility of disaster management and rescue operations, hence, a major reason why the campaign had become imperative to the Corps.
“We engage in rescuing victims in the face of emergency and provide security for the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, during distribution of relief materials to victims or displaced persons,” he said.
Audi said he had directed the NSCDC Commandants in the 36 States of the Federation, including the FCT, to replicate the same campaign in various communities within their jurisdiction.
He said some of the messages on the campaign fliers were: “Let’s stop the flood before flood stops us; If you block my natural ways, I will meet you in your homes, on the highway inside your car”.
“The fight against flood starts with you and I; If you leave me, I will leave you; if you disturb me I will disturb you the more, be warned, among others.”

Destroying Dangote bad for Nigeria —AfDB president, Adesina

0

President of the African Development Bank Group, Akinwumi Adesina, has added his voice in defence of Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the CEO of the Dangote Group, following his vilification by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited on alleged monopolistic practices in the oil sector.
Adesina, a former Minister of Agriculture, in a statement on Tuesday, said destroying and disparaging Dangote was sending a wrong message to potential investors who will be sceptical about investing in the country.
The AfDB chief expressed shock at the controversy surrounding Dangote’s operations, warning that it is creating bad waves for Nigeria globally.
In the statement shared by businessman Femi Otedola via X, Adesina stated that monopolies often arise in industries with high entry barriers or capital costs, citing railways and large-scale refineries as examples.
“This whole issue on Dangote is shocking and creating bad waves for Nigeria globally,” Adesina argued.
“Monopoly often exists where there are high barriers to entry or high capital costs.
“How many individuals or companies can do railways? How many can do refineries of the scale of Dangote Refineries?
“In a nation that has been importing refined petroleum products for several decades, the abnormal simply became very normal.
“No smart investor would make a $19.5 billion investment and want it to be undermined by importers.

“To manufacture is extremely expensive and risky. This is even more so in Nigeria, given the very challenging business and economic environment, fraught with policy uncertainties and policy reversals, and where the self-defeating default mode of “simply import it” is always so easily rationalized and chorused to solve any problem.
“Competition is good for everyone. But is Dangote refineries anti-competitive? What is the evidence?
“Has Dangote refineries prevented any other company from setting up refineries? Why have others not done so? How come they have not done so for several decades? Was it Dangote that held them back?
“But Dangote refineries surely cannot be asked to compete with importers of petroleum products.
“That is not competition. Let the importers set up local refineries and compete by refining in Nigeria. That is fair and justified competition.
“We cannot and must not undermine, disparage or kill local industries, talk less of one that is of this scale — a jewel of industrialisation in Nigeria.
“It is more than simply delivering the cheapest product to the market. It is about domestic supply security, driving (and yes, protecting) globally competitive industries, maximizing forward and backward linkages in the local economy, job creation, reducing forex expenses and shoring up the Naira.
“We must not be myopic. This whole disparaging of Dangote is uncalled for. It is self-defeating. And it is very bad for Nigeria. Who will want to come and invest in a country that disparages and undermines its own largest investor?
“Investing is tough. Pettiness is easy. It sadly sends a signal that the price for sacrificing for Nigeria is to get sacrificed,” he stated.
