Bwala accuses foreign interests of fueling planned nationwide protests

Former spokesman to the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign, Mr Daniel Bwala, on Wednesday, alleged that foreign players may be fueling calls for the planned nationwide protests over the skyrocketing cost of living.

“There would have been foreign interests who are taking advantage of the poor political climate because of the hunger and suffering,” Bwala told State House, correspondents, after meeting President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

His comments follow calls for nationwide protests from August 1-10 against the biting economic hardship.

Linking the planned protest to foreign politics, Bwala said, “I honestly believe that there is, to a large extent, the element of politics. And my belief that it even transcends the country.

“We know that everybody in Nigeria acknowledges that there is suffering and the suffering did not start last year.

“We’ve been dealing with this issue of suffering and lack of employment. We’re talking about entrepreneurship. That is virtually every aspect of the economy and security. We have always been pushing the envelope to see how we can attain a better place.”

The former PDP presidential campaign spokesperson lamented that despite the president’s efforts, some entities were threatening to “bring down the government.”

He stated, “But suddenly if you see the conversation on mainstream and social media, the conversation is all about bringing the government down. They say President Bola Tinubu must resign.

“Once you hear that kind of talk and language, then you don’t need somebody to interpret that there is a political connotation.

“You must be aware that people have been holding meetings saying they want to unseat the President. By our constitution, he has four years and it’s renewable for another term of four years and he’s doing everything possible in these four years to deliver on the promise to the Nigerian people.”

Bwala argued that the government’s policies are taking the country through a trajectory that spells better for the future.

He stated, “The data is coming in and some of the indices show that there is a redirection going on.

“No reform is easy. Go to Brazil or any part of the world. If you’re going to do reform, it is not going to be easy. It means that all of us will have to readjust. But the government’s role, when initiating reforms is to bring about intervention; which is what the President is doing—interventions like the release of truckloads of food and then giving monies. Also, remember the increased allocation to the governors?

“He even committed to helping the organised private sector to meet up with the minimum wage.”

After an audience with the President in January 2024, the former PDP Chieftain said he is committed to supporting the administration even if it requires defecting to the All Progressives Congress.

Bwala, who said he was on a solidarity visit to the president, reiterated that he was on his way to joining the governing party.

Fubara, Wike's supporters clash in Rivers

Supporters of the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and those of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, clashed on Wednesday during a medical outreach in the Eliozu community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that trouble started when the state Ministry of Health officials were carrying out a medical outreach for women at the Eliozu Health Centre.

It was further gathered that no sooner had the programme started than some supporters allegedly loyal to a factional Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, arrived at the venue to find out the reason for the gathering.

The venue is said to be near the residence of Amaewhule, who is the leader of the 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike.

But supporters of the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in the state, Chijioke Ihunwo, loyal to Fubara, who were at the venue allegedly stopped them from assessing the venue, leading to a heated argument and subsequent clash.

Following the fisticuff, stones were pelted from several directions, as the medical outreach was disrupted abruptly.

A few minutes later, a team of riot policemen arrived at the scene, firing teargas to disperse the opposing groups and quell the situation from getting out of hand.

It was, however, gathered that a child who was said to have inhaled the substance from the teargas was rushed into the facility and later regained consciousness.

It was also gathered that the outreach was later moved to a state-owned medical facility at the Waterlines axis of Port Harcourt, the state capital where the programme was launched.

Reacting to the incident, Ihunwo accused Amaewhule of leading policemen to disrupt the outreach.

Ihunwo stated, “This morning, there was an incident at the Eliozu Health Centre where the former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, led some security men to disrupt a programme by the Ministry of Health.

“A few minutes later, some policemen came and started beating up our women, shooting teargas at pregnant women who were at the health centre.

“We want to say that Obio/Akpor Local Government Area will not be under siege. We want to call on the President, Bola Tinubu that the Inspector General of Police and the Minister of the FCT are tarnishing the image of your government.

“We are calling on you to call them to order so that Rivers State can have peace. Let the FCT Minister concentrate on his job in Abuja and leave our dear Governor alone.”

When contacted, Martins Wachukwu, media aide to Amaewhule, said he would speak to our correspondent on Thursday morning.

Wachukwu stated tersely, “Please I will speak to you tomorrow morning.”

The spokesperson for the state Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident.

Iringe-Koko, in a short message to our correspondent, said the police responded to a distress call over the scenario, adding that the investigation was ongoing.

She stated, “A distress call was received from the health centre in the Eliozu community today, July 24, 2024, where supporters of two separate political factions were engaged in a fight.

“The police responded by sending operatives to the scene to restore law and order.

“The police deployed anti-riot tactics, including the use of canisters, to disperse the crowds. An investigation into the matter has been initiated.”

Nigeria ranked high in global digital readiness index

Calls for stronger regulations intensify amid rising identity theft

A new report by the International Telecommunications Union has ranked Nigeria high in its readiness for digital transformation, with a score of 71 per cent.

The report, conducted in collaboration with the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, evaluated countries’ legal, policy, and governance frameworks towards achieving an advanced state of digital transformation, known as G5.

According to a statement from the Nigeria Communications Commission on Wednesday, the report was unveiled by Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, in Abuja.

The report titled “Collaborative Regulation: Accelerating Nigeria’s Digital Transformation” presented a case study for a collaborative regulation review to assess and support Nigeria’s transition towards collaborative digital governance, evidence-based policymaking and agile regulation in the digital economy.

Nigeria’s ranking places it among the top seven countries in Africa, alongside Germany, Finland, and Singapore, which lead the global chart.

The report also ranked Nigeria high in the BEMECS 5G Readiness Index, indicating the country’s readiness to deploy and adopt mass-market 5G networks.

Tijani, in his remarks at the event, commended the ITU and partner agencies and consultants that actualised the report and expressed the Federal Government’s commitment “To utilise this report as a navigational aid towards the attainment of our regulatory objectives and policies outlines towards achieving a robust digital economy.

“That is what we will continue to do as a government, ensuring that we can put ourselves in a place to have cutting-edge modern regulations in place to ensure that business is done properly in our sector and to ensure that, where possible, increase the local content of the sector as well,” he said.

He noted that NCC has adapted over the years in response to how its role and mandate have changed.

He explained, “Fifteen, twenty years ago, NCC was just regulating the telecommunications sector; today, NCC regulates the foundation for which any economy would be prosperous.”

The report, which was presented to a cross-section of key industry stakeholders, including service providers, government agencies, representatives of multilateral institutions, the West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly, and the Africa Telecommunications Union, among others, was also designed to complement existing cross-country benchmarks in which features of countries policies and regulatory environments are assessed.

The features of countries’ policy and regulatory environment are assessed according to the pillars of the generations of regulation frameworks that track telecom regulatory maturity towards digital transformation readiness, designated at the G5 Advanced State of Readiness” for which Nigeria currently stands at G4.

“Nigeria’s advanced state of readiness for digital transformation is benchmarked against four critical levels of accomplishments, which include national collaborative governance, policy design principles, the digital development toolbox, and the digital economic policy agenda.

“The country’s scores across these benchmarks are impressive, with notable highlights including 91 per cent in Regulatory Capacity, 82 per cent in Market Rules, 81 per cent in collaborative governance, 76 per cent in Legal Instruments for ICT/telecom markets, and 69 per cent in National Digital Agenda Policy,” the report stated.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr Aminu Maida, who hosted the presentation, welcomed the indicators that promote effective regulation, attraction of greater investment, and development of innovative models for broader digital inclusion.

He emphasised that collaborative regulation would support Nigeria’s transition towards effective digital governance, evidence-based policymaking, and agile regulation in the nation’s digital economy.

Education remains my administration’s priority, says Kano gov

Kano distributes fertilizers worth N1.2bn to farmers

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Wednesday assured the people of the state of his administration’s efforts towards the revival of the education sector.

The governor gave the assurance in his remarks when he paid an unscheduled visit to the New Girls Science and Technical College, Kofar Nasarawa, Kano.

“We are very serious in tackling the decay in the state’s education sector. We mean business and we remain focused in our efforts to solve the problem.

“Our number one priority is education; our second priority is education and our third priority is also education, before any other sector.

“My administration had embarked on many programmes under the recently declared state of emergency on education to address the decay in the sector,” Yusuf stated.

The governor listed such initiatives to include the construction, rehabilitation and renovation of classroom blocks, provision of furniture, teaching materials and employment of new teachers.

He, however, expressed his disappointment at what he observed at the school formerly known as the Governor’s College, noting that, “I am sad and disappointed at the decay in this school; no teaching materials, no furniture and virtually no teachers.”

Furthermore, he lamented that former Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso’s administration under which he served, left the school fully-equipped and adequately staffed, but the succeeding administration neglected it and left it dilapidated.

Yusuf, however, assured members of staff and students of the college that the state government would provide the needed staff, teaching materials, furniture and other facilities to promote quality education.

The Akwa Ibom Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has secured the conviction and sentencing of one Etiusen Stephen for spraying naira notes before Justice M.A.Oyetenu of the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

This was disclosed in a statement posted on X.com on Wednesday.

Stephen was arraigned on July 19, 2024, on a two-count charge of naira abuse, which violates Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act.

According to the statement, the charges read, “That you Etiusen Stephen Udo on or about 27th June 2024 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State within the jurisdiction of this Honorable court did sell Forty Thousand Naira notes poOnly to one Edidiong Usoro and thereby Committed an offence contrary to Section 21 (4) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 and punishable under Section 21 (1) of the same Act’.”

When the charges were read to the defendant, he pleaded ‘guilty’ to both counts.

“In view of his plea, prosecution counsel, Joshua Abolarin, prayed the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly and order a permanent forfeiture of the cash recovered from him to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“However, defence counsel Udeme Tom prayed the court to give a lighter sentence stressing that the defendant was remorseful and a first-time offender.

“After listening to both counsel, Justice Onyetenu convicted Etiusen, and ordered the forfeiture of the N40,000 recovered from him to the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the statement added.

He was caught spraying naira notes and carelessly stepping on them while dancing.

Thousands protest against Israeli PM outside US Capitol

Thousands of demonstrators angry over the war in Gaza marched on the US Capitol on Wednesday as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked US lawmakers for steady support as his forces fight Hamas.

Scuffles with police broke out as officers tried to keep protesters away from the seat of the US Congress — the scene of a violent insurrection by supporters of Donald Trump on January 6, 2021.

Crowds carrying Palestinian flags and signs ranging from left-wing slogans to verses from the Bible gathered near the Capitol calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and the arrest of Netanyahu, as prosecutors seek a warrant for him at the International Criminal Court.

“Seek peace and pursue it,” read one sign, quoting a Bible verse, while others were designed as criminal “wanted” signs, with photos of Netanyahu in place of a mugshot.

“Arrest that war criminal,” read another.

Police fired pepper spray on some protesters to redirect the demonstration. Several could be seen washing their eyes and faces afterwards.

Later, police made several arrests as protesters took down three US flags outside Union Station, a major rail hub near Capitol Hill, and set them on fire, drawing loud cheers.

Netanyahu was burned in effigy, and the Stars and Stripes was replaced by the red, black and green Palestinian flag.

Several loud bangs of unknown origin rang out.

Inside the Capitol, Netanyahu asked for continued US support as the war triggered by the Hamas attacks of October 7 drags on.

“For the forces of civilisation to triumph, America and Israel must stand together,” Netanyahu said, earning repeated and lengthy applause from the members of Congress in attendance.

But protesters vented about the war and Washington’s support for it.

“The hypocrisy of our politicians today has gone beyond any limits,” Mo, a 58-year-old protester, told AFP.

Relations have grown strained as the civilian death toll in Gaza has grown, leading to protests in the United States and increasing criticism from President Joe Biden’s administration, although little has changed in the way of US military support.

Ahead of the speech, security was reportedly increased at the Capitol, much of which was closed to the public on Wednesday, according to political news outlet The Hill.

The Israeli prime minister did draw boos from US lawmakers when he criticised protesters outside as “Iran’s useful idiots.” Tehran arms and otherwise supports Hamas.

• ‘Stop US aid’ –

Palestinian and Jewish organizers stood on a stage and denounced both the United States and the Israeli government for “genocide,” calling for a “citizen’s arrest” of Netanyahu.

“Stop US aid to Israel,” 24-year-old protester Yudyth Hernandez told AFP from the crowd, saying instead such money would be better used to “fund our schools.”

“We are horrified by the destruction of the health system in Gaza,” Karameh Kuemmerle, of the organisation Doctors Against Genocide, told AFP.

“And we are here to show our opposition to having the criminal Netanyahu come to our capital and be greeted by the politicians who sent him weapons to kill children in Gaza,” said the doctor, who travelled to Washington from Boston.

Israel has recently intensified its attacks on Gaza, and Netanyahu has insisted that only piling on military pressure can free the hostages and defeat Hamas.

The Palestinian militant group launched a shock attack on October 7 that resulted in the deaths of 1,197 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

Hamas also seized 251 hostages, 116 of whom are still in Gaza, including 44 the Israeli military says are dead.

Israel’s retaliatory military campaign in Gaza has killed at least 39,145 people, also mostly civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.
