Former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has urged all relevant stakeholders to save journalism from quacks and what he described as ’emergency reporters’ who are fond of publishing fake, subjective and unbalanced news.
Amosun made the appeal on Thursday while delivering his address at the 6th-anniversary lecture of Penpushing Media held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.
He emphasized the necessity for online and social media regulation in order to distinguish the sincere platforms from the dishonest, whose promoters most times are faceless, and prevent them from destroying the reputation of the professionals.
Amosun, who is the chairman of the occasion, acknowledged the importance of the media in shaping public opinion, establishing agenda for good governance and socioeconomic development, maintained that the media, especially online platforms, must act with extreme caution and a strong sense of responsibility.
He said, “As essential as the roles of the media and its practitioners are in our society, especially in shaping the opinions and setting agenda for good governance, national cohesion, communal harmony, and socio-economic development, it is of utmost importance that the media, particularly online platforms, must do so with circumspection and deep sense of responsibility.
“This trend is fast becoming a new normal and has continued unabated in our society. As we are in this hall today, several online media platforms are launching into the air waves, publishing stories without any restraints or recourse to the core journalistic values of Objectivity, Balance, and Professionalism.
“This is a challenge to media practitioners to come up with a self-regulatory framework, in conjunction with the relevant bodies, in other to save journalism from the grip hands of quacks and “emergency reporters” who are fond of publishing fake, subjective and unbalanced news or stories.
“From the foregoing, the need for regulation of online and social media is vital to separate the serious ones from the unscrupulous outfits, many of whose promoters are faceless and their offices unregistered, from tarnishing the image and damaging the reputation of the serious-minded professional ones.”
He lamented that while negative news tend to gain traction faster more than positive ones, some journalists dish out false information due to lack of knowledge about the ethical standards of the profession while others do so with intent to discredit, ridicule, or damage reputations.
Amosun maintained that the nation is in dire need of journalists and media practitioners who are committed to publish verifiable, objective and balanced news stories that will engender peace and tranquility in the society, national development and cohesion, and not falsehood and propaganda.

Free Nnamdi Kanu, you were once against one-Nigeria – Ejimakor to Tinubu
Aloy Ejimakor, the lead Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Thursday, charged President Bola Tinubu to free the Biafra agitator.
Ejimakor said Tinubu had risen to become Nigeria’s president despite his past stance against one-Nigeria.
In an interview with Thisday on April 13th, 1997, Tinubu had said ‘I don’t believe in one Nigeria’.
However, posting on X, Ejimakor wrote: “Free Nnamdi Kanu because you were also once against one Nigeria
“In 1997, Tinubu proclaimed that he doesn’t believe in #OneNigeria but he went scot-free & became President. So, where lies the moral authority to detain MAZI NNAMDI KANU that said nothing different?”
The IPOB leader has remained locked up by the Department of State Services, DSS, on the orders of the Nigerian government.
Kanu has been locked up since he was rearrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria to face his trial over his agitation for the actualization of Biafra.
Despite court rulings granting him bail, the Nigerian government has refused to let him off the hook.

Leading debate on the matter, Obi who is the Chairman House Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, disclosed that a large influx of unidentified Fulanis, estimated to be over 1000, have entered the Boki communities in pursuit of solid minerals.

Man Utd eye former Chelsea player to address defensive concerns

Manchester United are reportedly considering former Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso as a potential solution to their defensive issues.
The Red Devils have faced challenges in the left-back position, with both Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw struggling with fitness problems last season.
According to The Mirror, United have compiled a three-man shortlist for the left-back position, which includes Alonso, Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell, and Feyenoord’s David Hancko.
Alonso, who recently left Barcelona as a free agent, brings Premier League experience, having been part of Chelsea’s Premier League-winning side in 2016-17 and their Champions League triumph in 2020-21.
According to Caught Offside, the 33-year-old Spaniard is viewed as a short-term option and potential backup for Luke Shaw as his attacking prowess could provide additional support for United’s forward line.
“He has experience in the Premier League and he can help the full-back during attacks.
“The 33-year-old would only be a short-term option for the Red Devils considering his age and would mainly act as backup to Luke Shaw.
“It shows United’s intention to strengthen their defence in more than one position this summer. The Red Devils have also been linked with a move for a right-back to replace Wan-Bissaka.
“Negotiations are currently underway with Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, which shows United are ready to completely overhaul their defensive line-up,” a post on Thursday via its website said.
This interest in Alonso comes as part of a broader strategy to strengthen United’s defence. The club has already secured the signatures of striker Joshua Zirkzee and defender Leny Yoro, while also being linked with Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt.
United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, is keen to address the left-back position after the team was forced to deploy right-backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot in that role last season due to injuries.
The Red Devils have been active in the transfer market, offloading players like Mason Greenwood, Willy Kambwala, and Donny van de Beek. There are also rumours surrounding the potential departures of Casemiro and Scott McTominay.
Give Tinubu time to correct abnormalities, APC chieftain begs Nigerians

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Uche Nwosu, has appealed to Nigerians to shelve the nationwide planned protest and allow President Bola Tinubu to fix the nation.
The chief of staff to former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, disclosed that it would be unfair to expect a government that has just spent a year in office to quickly fix the rots that plagued the country for decades.
Nwosu made the plea in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday.
His appeal comes barely 24 hours after the ruling APC called on concerned parents to watch the movement of their wards to prevent them from being recruited for violence ahead of the nationwide protest.
The demonstration, scheduled to run from August 1 to 10, has continued to generate tension and elicit mixed reactions from Nigerians.
Several groups who indicated interest in championing the campaign said the call for protest was provoked by the soaring cost of living and economic hardship in the country.
But Nwosu insisted that the president should be given time to ‘correct all the abnormalities.’
He said, “Let me use this opportunity to appeal to our beloved Nigerian youths to give peace a chance. We are indeed passing through hard times in our dear nation. But we cannot give up like those who do not have hope. It is true that in a democracy citizens have the right to protest but most often the protests in Nigeria where we have 250 ethnic groups do not end well.
“For instance, the EndSARS protest where a very peaceful protest was being hijacked by people who do not mean well for the country at the end of the day properties worth billions of naira and many lives were lost. Yes, President Bola Tinubu’s policies and reforms might be harsh now. But at the end of every tunnel, there will be light.
“He is barely a year in office. Why don’t we give him time to correct all the abnormalities we have seen in this country, the abnormalities of yesterday? Let’s give him time to correct them so that we can have a country of our collective hopes and aspirations. There is no place like home. Nigeria is our country. Let’s have a country where you and I will live and say this is our country.”
