Elon Musk plans $5bn investment in AI startup xAI

0

The CEO of Tesla Inc., Elon Musk, has announced plans to seek board approval for a $5bn investment in xAI, his artificial intelligence startup.

In a poll posted on his social media platform X on Thursday, Musk asked users if Tesla should invest $5bn in xAI, pending valuation verification by outside investors.

The billionaire businessman emphasised that the poll was informal and that a formal board approval and shareholder vote would be required.

If approved, the investment would further integrate Musk’s network of technology companies, including SpaceX, Neuralink, The Boring Company, Tesla, and xAI.

“Should Tesla invest $5B into xAI, assuming the valuation is set by several credible outside investors?

“(Board approval and shareholder vote are needed, so this is just to test the waters,” Musk tweeted.

In May, The According reported that xAI raised $6bn in a Series B funding round backed by investors including Valor Equity Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, and Sequoia Capital, among others.

“xAI will continue on this steep trajectory of progress over the coming months, with multiple exciting technology updates and products soon to be announced,” the startup said.

Musk’s company primarily focuses on developing advanced AI systems that are truthful, competent, and maximally beneficial for all of humanity.

Last year, the businessman launched xAI, as he seeks to compete with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT—a program he accused of being politically biased and irresponsible.

INEC raises security concerns over Edo governorship election

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concern over security ahead of the September 21 governorship election in Edo State.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, raised the fear when he appeared before the joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on Thursday in Abuja.
He was invited by the lawmakers to update them on INEC’s preparations for the off-cycle elections in Edo and Ondo States.
Yakubu lamented that the commission’s main concern in the Edo governorship election was security.
He said: “When we were there, one of the political parties raised an issue in Edo about the likely deployment of the Edo State Security Network (ESSN).
“But immediately after we received the complaint, we headed to the office of the Commissioner of Police and summoned a meeting with all security agencies in Edo.
“We agreed to meet with all political parties in the state and the commissioner of police told us and the party leaders that he would take up the matter with the state government.
“The issue at that time was the ongoing continuous voter registration and since then, I am not aware of any official complaints from any party or candidate on the role of the ESSN.”
On preparation for the elections, the INEC chief added: “We have conducted continuous voter registration. A few of the registered voters require validation.”
He said INEC was not happy with the quality of the biometrics for the registered voters in the two states.
Yakubu pointed out that one of the major problems faced by the commission was the difficulty in conducting off-cycle governorship elections.
He said it was more difficult to conduct than general elections.
“These off-cycle elections are very difficult and very challenging for us,” Yakubu stated.

I was in my mother’s womb for 12 months

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday, said that his mother carried his pregnancy for 12 months before his birth.

Obasanjo said that the delay in his birth was ascribed to the influence of some witches and wizards who gave his mother a tough time before God’s intervention.

The former President, according to a statement on Thursday from his Media Assistant, Mr Kehinde Akinyemi, disclosed this while speaking during a drama presentation titled “Aremu omo Asabi” held to mark 66 years remembrance of Obasanjo’s late mother, Mrs Benice Obasanjo.

The drama was held on Wednesday at the main auditorium of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

Obasanjo had lamented that it was unfortunate that his mother never lived to see how great God had helped him to become in life and of course, enjoy the fruits of her hard labour.

He said that though his mother gave birth to nine children, only two of them, himself and his sister, survived.

Obasanjo said, “I was told I was in my mother’s womb for 12 months, and since I was born, I have not been left for once. She had nine children, but two of us survived, myself and my sister.

“I was the only one who went to school because my father’s belief was that no matter how educated a female child is, she would end up in the kitchen.”

Obasanjo, at the programme, also promised to support the troupe’s quest to present the longest open drama to clinch a Guinness Book of Record.

Speaking at the programme, the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, represented by his Deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, said mothers will forever be the bedrock upon which the foundation of any society is built.

Abiodun described Obasanjo’s mother as a great woman, while alive, saying her influence would continue to endure through the lives of her children, especially Obasanjo, who remains a formidable figure in Nigeria’s history.

The governor added that the musical drama titled, ‘Aremu Omo Asabi’ performed in celebration of her life was not just recounting history, but was also a prompt reminder of the sacrifices mothers make and the indelible spirit they pass on to their children.

“This tribute is also a call to action for all of us to honour and support mothers in every way possible. It reminds us of our collective responsibility to create an enabling environment where every mother’s hope for their children can flourish.

“This is why the present administration continues to pursue policies which ensure access to quality education, healthcare and opportunities for all so that the dreams that mothers have for their children can be realised,” he said.

Also speaking, his Lagos State counterpart, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Salu Hundeyin, commended Obasanjo for honouring his late mother after 66 years, pointing out that mothers are special instruments in the hands of God and man, that must be treated specially and accorded necessary honour.

Ooni, others urge organisers to embrace dialogue

0

Traditional Rulers in Nigeria on Thursday asked the organisers of #EndBadGovernance protests to channel their frustrations into meaningful dialogue with the Federal Government.

They also warned against the possibility of the protests being hijacked by elements whom, they say, mean no good for the country.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who co-chairs the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, said this when he addressed journalists after an expanded cabinet meeting at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday.

“People that are out there to protest, it is their civic right. But let them put a face to it, and don’t let it be hijacked by people that have ulterior motives. That is our stand.

“We traditional rulers are not in support of people, especially youths, coming out to loot and break down law and order. We condemn such acts fully.

“We are parents. We are traditional rulers. We are closer to them. We are going to go back home and continue to engage them,” the Ooni said.

His remarks follow growing calls for nationwide protests against economic hardship, scheduled for August 1 – 15, 2024.

Thursday’s meeting was part of last-ditch efforts by the Federal Government to engage critical stakeholders to avert what it perceives as a brewing crisis.

The Ooni, who promised that the traditional rulers would engage their people back home, appealed to organisers to embrace dialogue, saying the government remains open to talking.

“The President has said, ‘Any leader that you don’t like, wait (until 2027) and vote him out.’ He is open to dialogue. We know that Nigeria faces many challenges. But are we going to destroy our nation by ourselves? Is that what we’re all after?

“It is very difficult to build, but it is the easiest to destroy. We are all stakeholders in this country and are stronger as a nation than individually.

“We should talk to ourselves. We need to know that today, it’s a completely different spin. The government, ably led by the President, is willing to engage and dialogue and bring governance very close to the people,” he explained.

Oba Adeyeye said the meeting was the first instance where the Federal Executive Council engaged directly with traditional rulers.

“Stewardship from the Federal Executive Council, directly to the traditional rulers? It has never happened in our nation before. Never! This is the first time we’re all experiencing it.

“Today is the very first time we will be addressed properly by the Federal Executive Council…in terms of the plans of government, their achievements so far, and where they’re having challenges. So, there is a proper bridge between the governed and the people in charge of government.

“For the very first time, the traditional rulers were properly engaged. This is long-awaited. We’re closer to our people and can bring that feedback back home. So, it’s a beautiful take home for us because we don’t lock our palaces; we are more exposed to the people we rule over,” he narrated, thanking Tinubu for the approach.

On his part, the Dein of Agbor Kingdom, Ikenchukwu Keagborokuzi I, appealed to Nigerian youths to work with the FG using all available opportunities.

Keagborokuzi, who described Nigerian youths as the nation’s strength, acknowledged the displeasing challenges confronting them but said that the #EndBadGovernance protests would not solve the nation’s problems.

“Hearing from Mr. President directly, the take-home message for me is that I can see the passion. But at the same time, I think the government is finally understanding we are at the precipice.

“We will listen to our youths because they lead the future. The power and strength of Nigeria certainly lie with the young people. We feel your pain. I’m a young person myself.

“It’s been 24 years since I’ve started seeing the nation going in a very unpalatable direction. This protest, I know that it’s very tight in our neck, but let us not destroy our own country,” said the traditional ruler.

He cited the aftermath of the Arab Spring in Libya, urging Nigerian youths to reconsider the planned protest.

“Think of Libya. Libya was a beautiful country; what has happened to Libya, we don’t want it to happen here.

“Let’s go home. Let’s continue to strive to be the best that we can and continue to work with the government to see if we can offer some solutions.

“I think that that would be best rather than to destroy property or injure ourselves,” he advised.

The Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed Bamalli, said the insecurity in the north remains the bane of Nigeria’s food crisis. Therefore, then FG must address insecurity head-on to stabilise the country.

“We have made it very clear to him [President Tinubu] that the main problem in this country, especially the north, is insecurity.

“If the security situation is addressed, certainly people will go back to their farms, and the issue of hunger will drastically reduce and disappear,” said Bamalli.

The Emir revealed that the traditional rulers were worried about the protests as they could shut down the country.

He argued, “Nobody will be worried about the protest. We have seen what has happened in other climes, and governments have been brought down.

“As an ex-diplomat, I have seen what happened in other climes, and that is why I am in the position to say what happened in other places.”

He urged Nigerians to “exercise patience and to listen to the words of wisdom. We are very optimistic Nigeria will bounce back to its former position as the leading country in Africa.

Police arraigns five men for alleged possession of firearms in Oyo

Police on Thursday arraigned five men at the Iyaganku Magistrate’s Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, over alleged possession of rifles and live ammunition.
The five men – Muhammadu Ibrahim (23), Abdullahi Aliyu (30), Usman Abubakar (28), Abubakar Umoru (25) and Arowolo Olatunbosun (34) – were arraigned for conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.
Magistrate Olasinmibo Sanusi-Zubair did not take the defendants’ pleas for lack of jurisdiction.
She, however, directed the police to return the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
Sanusi-Zubair, thereafter, adjourned the case to September 30 for mention and remanded the defendants in a correctional facility in the state.
The police prosecutor, Insp. Oladejo Balogun, had earlier told the court that the defendants committed the offences on June 16 at Moniya, Ibadan.
He said the defendants were found in possession of one AK-47 rifle, one LAR rifle, and 17 live ammunition.
The prosecutor added that the offences contravened Section 3 of the Robbery and Firearms Laws of Nigeria, 2004.

Alleged economic sabotage: Senate summons petroleum minister, NNPCL, CBN, NPA, others

0

The Senate through its ad hoc committee mandated to investigate alleged economic sabotage in the Nigerian petroleum industry, has summoned various stakeholders in the sector for interrogation.
The 15-man committee led by the Leader of the Senate, Senator Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), made this known to journalists on Thursday at a press briefing on the scope of the assignment and the readiness to unveil the alleged saboteurs in the sector.
Key among the stakeholders in the petroleum sector summoned to appear before the committee at a public hearing fixed for September 10 to September 12, 2024, are the Minister of State for Petroleum, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA.
Others are Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Navy, international oil companies, IOCs, Dangote Group, Capital Oil, and modular refineries, among others.
The committee was set up by the Senate in plenary on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, through a resolution adopted after exhaustive debate by senators on a motion sponsored by Senator Azuquo Ekpenyong (APC, Cross River South) on the importation of hazardous products and dumping of substandard diesel in Nigeria.
In his speech at the press briefing, Senator Bamidele said: “The rationale for this news conference is pure and simple. It mainly borders on the alleged economic sabotage in the petroleum industry, including the recent accusations and counters, of importation of petroleum products into the country.
“Given its consequences on our domestic economy, the Senate, under the able leadership of the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, constituted this 15-man ad hoc committee to investigate alleged economic sabotage in the Nigerian petroleum industry on July 3, 2024.
“Specifically, the committee, as mandated by the Senate, would examine the pre-shipment and pre-discharge standard test parameters adopted by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Regulatory Authority with a view to uncovering loopholes, if any, being exploited to get toxic cargoes into the country.
“Determine the level of compliance of the NNPCL’s Direct Sale and Direct Purchase (DSP) arrangements in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act, including the extent of transparency and accountability.
“Beam legislative searchlight on the activities of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), including payments made to transporters in the last 10 years.
“Enquire from the NNPCL the state/status of the 22 depots built by the defunct NNPC to eliminate road distribution of petroleum products.
“Engage with stakeholders within the oil and gas industry with a view to identifying possible gaps in regulating and strengthening the surveillance and monitoring structures in place to enable Nigeria to detect violations of best practice standards in the importation of products before they enter the domestic supply chains.
“Also engage with the NNPCL with a view to understanding the extent of its determination and timelines for the start-up of government-funded oil refineries.
“Investigate how institutions across the importation and distribution chain failed to conduct quality sampling, shipped in products without auditing, and performed port validations by the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, and Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA.”
Consequently, according to the chairman, the 15-man committee has resolved to carry out the investigations holistically and thoroughly and has written to all the relevant stakeholders in the sector for submission of relevant documents and appearance before it during the public hearing, fixed for September 10 to September 12, 2024.
In their separate remarks at the press briefing, all the members of the committee vowed to unravel the rot in the sector and declared that it would no longer be business as usual.
According to them, their integrity is at stake and there would be no room for sacred cows, declaring “that warrant of arrest would be issued on any head of agency who refuses to honour invitation for appearance.”
Members of the committee include senators Asuquo Ekpenyong, Abdullahi Yahaya, Mohammed Minguno, Adeola Olamilekan, Diket Plang, Harry Banigo, Khabeeb Mustapha, Adams Oshiomhole, Jonah Eteng, Adetokunbo Abiru, Osita Izunaso, Sahabi Ya’u, Abdul Ningi and Ifeanyi Ubah.

Impersonator defrauds job seeker of N210,000, arrested in Bauchi

0

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Aminu Mohammed, for allegedly impersonating a Nigerian Army personnel for two years in Magaji Quarters, Bauchi Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, disclosed this to journalists on Thursday, stating that the suspect’s actions violated Sections 110(1) and 251 of the Criminal Code.

According to Wakil, the suspect was apprehended by operatives of the Tafawa Balewa Housing Estate Divisional Police “C” Division on Monday, following a complaint filed against him.

The suspect allegedly collected N210,000 from an unsuspecting individual, promising to assist in securing a job with the Nigerian Army.

Wakil revealed that the suspect directed his victim to meet his friend, currently at large, to facilitate entry into the Nigerian Military School in Zaria, Kaduna State.
