The Acting General Officer Commanding 8 Brigade, Nigeria Army in Sokoto, Brigadier General Ibikunle Ademola Ajose has described education as the pillar of development in any society.
He said most of the youths perpetrating crimes in the country are not educated, urging the wives of soldiers to give their children a decent upbringing to protect the image and reputation of the Nigerian Army.
Ajose stated this when he commissioned the Army Cantonment primary school in Gusau Zamfara State capital.
He said that banditry activities and other forms of criminalities ravaging the north and other parts of the country were due to a lack of education among young people.
“Education is a vital instrument for the development of a society and the Army will not treat the issue of education with a mere wave of hand’, he added.
Earlier, the Commanding officer of 1 Brigade, Brigadier General Sani Ahmed said the State’s Universal Basic Education Board, ZSUBEB started the construction of the school in 2021 and later abandoned it but the Army took over and reconstructed the school.
He said he had already promised the families of the Army officers that he would carry on from where the ZSUBEB stopped.
He asked parents not to worry over payment of fees, and uniforms as all that will be sponsored by the Army authority.

Ondo gov appoints Seyi Law, others as aides
The Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has appointed popular comedian Oluseyi Aletile, also known as Seyi Law, as his Senior Special Assistant on Entertainment and Tourism.
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ebenezer Adeniyan, made this known in a statement on Monday in Akure, the state capital, stating that the appointments are effective immediately.
Adeniyan added that the appointments are part of the governor’s efforts to enhance governance and service delivery in the state.
Others appointed as Senior Special Assistants include Alonge Felix Kolawole (Social Investment), Hon. Tomide Akinribido (ICT), Allen Sowore (Strategic Communication), Femi Lawson (Public Enlightenment), and Rotimi Agbede (Citizen Orientation).

MTN faces backlash over SIM blockage in Oyo
Thousands of MTN users besieged the company’s Idi-Ape office in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Monday, protesting the sudden blockage of their Subscriber Identification Modules.
The situation intensified when the telecom company blocked users’ phone numbers due to NIN-SIM linkage issues without prior warning.
Trending videos circulating online show crowds of frustrated customers sending MTN staff members home in response to the disruption.
A tweet by Oyo Affairs, using the @Oyoaffairs handle, showed thousands stranded at the Idi-Ape office.
Ogbeni Adefila (@OgbeniHadephila) commented, “If you are concerned about your SIM block, protest is never a remedy. Get yourselves together as an entity and take up a Class Action against the service providers. Sue them and get right.”
Another MTN SIM user, OluwaLoba (@iamtobzz), lamented, “This Idi-Ape MTN office is choked o.”
Razqee (@showband007) added that some MTN users who had registered and linked their SIMs with their NIN still experienced service interruptions.
“A friend of mine has his MTN SIM registered and with NIN verified written on his MTN app, so blocking him again,” he tweeted.
Meanwhile, a subscriber named Jamal Kolade faulted the protesters, arguing that the service provider had issued warnings about the SIM blocks for unlinked National Identification Numbers.
His tweet read, “What do you mean by prior warning? Do you know since when they’ve been telling people to link their NIN to their SIM?”
Similarly, a user codenamed Abcone @WORLDWIDEFINAN5, said, “My MTN line was blocked on Saturday. Meanwhile, the service provider has been sending notices; if you don’t have the right information, you should have done your findings. This is unnecessary and unacceptable at this crucial moment in our country.
August 1: Senate convenes emergency session amid planned nationwide protest
The Senate has scheduled an emergency session for Wednesday, amidst the planned nationwide protests.
An internal memorandum from the Senate Clerk said the President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio, directed that an emergency plenary sitting.
The notice read, “Distinguished Senators are requested to make all necessary arrangements to attend as issues of national importance will be discussed.
“We regret all the inconveniences that this interruption of the recess will cause. Thanks for your usual.”
Recall that some Nigerians have scheduled August 1 for a nationwide protest over excruciating economic hardship and hunger in the country.

Benue bandits shunned govt’s olive branch, says Alia
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has reported that local bandits terrorising the Sankera axis of the state have rejected measures put in place to rehabilitate them.
The governor made this statement on Sunday in Makurdi while reviewing the activities of bandits in Ukum, Katsina-Ala, and Logo LGAs, which constitute the Sankera axis.
The Sankera axis has remained a flashpoint of criminality over the years, and the killing of their kingpin, Terwase Akwaza, aka Gana, by the military in 2020 worsened the security situation in the axis as his former associates split into rival groups.
The state Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, Matthew Abo, told our correspondent that the bandits had turned down all entreaties to hold peace meetings with the government.
The bandits had accused the state government of betrayal for not fulfilling its promises to grant them amnesty.
Speaking on the issue, the governor said that his administration had extended an olive branch to the bandits, but they rejected it.
He said, “During my campaign, I told every faceless group in all the zones creating instability in the state to sheathe their swords. A new government is coming to liberate them and get them out of the bush. They should stop killing their very siblings, and that is what I have been trying to do.
“I offered to sponsor those who wished to go to school, to help them recreate their lives, and for those inclined towards trades, I offered skills training to help them earn a living. We would fund their establishment after acquiring the skills.
“All these measures were to enable them to come out of the bushes and stop destabilising the LGAs and killing their people.”
The governor regretted that some bandits who had accepted the offer and planned to leave the bushes were killed by rival groups in the guise of superiority.
“Unfortunately, those who were inclined to come out were attacked and caught in fights for superiority within the bushes,” he added.
Alia also accused some politicians of sponsoring the bandits, which he said had complicated the instability on the axis.
“For many years, there have been skirmishes and instability in the Ukum area, and most of this instability is not from outsiders. It’s the homegrown bandits who are killing their people and preventing them from going to the farm.
“The so-called Abuja politicians are the ones sponsoring and supporting these bandits.”
The governor, however, said that his administration would not relent in talking to the bandits to sheathe their swords and allow peace to reign in the area.
“We cannot stop talking to them. I have extended numerous olive branches to them,” the governor concluded.

Moghalu said Nigeria and other African countries have weak governance capacity, including foundational philosophical worldview, knowledge of public policy framing and execution, Monitoring and evaluation framework, amongst other.
He posted on X: “Why African countries can’t create prosperity: weak governance capacity. Absence of:
1. Foundational philosophical worldview (EVERY prosperous developed country has one).
2. Knowledge of public policy framing and execution.
3. Monitoring and evaluation framework.
4. Decision Science (data-based policy making).
5. Basic macroeconomic knowledge (as DepGov @cenbank this was obvious from interactions across @NigeriaGov and @nassnigeria ).
6. Strategy and risk management.
7. Understanding of the role of the private sector and the right balance between the state (regulation and policy) and the market.
8. Accountability (in reality) for corruption, thus allowing corruption (which exists everywhere) to become systemic and completely divert away from a true focus of governance on development.
9. Nationhood. Too much atomistic thinking along identity (ethnic and religious) lines. This completely destroys any inclination to objectivity in decision making. In the absence of a true worldview many African countries are “governed” by small views.”

OpenAI begins testing of SearchGPT to compete with Google
American Artificial Intelligence (AI) research organization OpenAI is seeking to compete directly with search engine giant,Google, by testing SerachGPT.
The search engine launches with a big textbox that asks the user, “what are you looking for?” Rather than delivering a list of links, SearchGPT attempts to organise and make sense of them.
In one OpenAI example, the search engine summarizes its findings on music festivals before providing summaries of the events and an attribution link.

The feature attempts to improve search queries by providing “timely answers” from around the internet and allowing users to ask follow-up inquiries.
The temporary prototype is presently only available for testing and input by a restricted set of users and publishing partners, but those interested can join the waitlist.
The Google and Perplexity rival will only be accessible for the time being as a prototype in limited release, with ambitions to eventually integrate it into ChatGPT.

ACF kicks against nationwide protests
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) in Kwara State has appealed to Nigerians to shun the August 1, 2024 planned protest against the Federal government.
Chairman of the forum, Ghali Alaaya, made the appeal in a statement signed by the director of media and documentation, Abdullahi Olesin.
The ACF reminded Nigerians that protest, with its potential dangers as witnessed in the past, will not do the nation any good.
While acknowledging the efforts of the President Bola Tinubu’s administration to fix the nation’s economy and make life abundant for the citizens, the group urged Nigerians to exercise more patience as the government’s reforms will soon yield fruitful dividends.
