MTN resumes operations after nationwide shutdown

0

Nigeria’s leading telecommunications provider, MTN, has resumed nationwide operations after a nationwide shutdown on Tuesday.

The temporary closure came in response to widespread customer outrage and vandalism, sparked by the disconnection of subscribers who failed to link their SIM cards to their National Identification Numbers.

On Wednesday, MTN announced its return to operations via X (formerly Twitter), confirming that its physical shops would be open to customers from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

“Y’ello customer, please note that our shops nationwide will be open today, 31 July. Operating hours: 8.00 am-3:00 pm. We are also available 24/7 to support you via digital channels,” the operator said.

Over the weekend, many subscribers found themselves unable to access their phone lines after failing to verify their NINs with SIMs, leading to their numbers being blocked in compliance with NIN-SIM linkage regulations.

This blockage prompted thousands of subscribers to storm telecom offices on Monday, leading the Nigerian Communications Commission to direct telecommunications operators to immediately restore all affected lines.

The NCC, in a statement signed on Monday by the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, explained that the directive was in response to the widespread disruption and subscriber outrage caused by the blockages.

The mandatory linkage of NINs with SIMs, initiated in December 2020, was geared towards enhancing the country’s security and ensuring an accurate SIM ownership database. Despite several deadline extensions, including the latest to July 31, 2024, many lines remain unverified.

Since December 2023, the Commission has reviewed the deadline multiple times. Initially, April 15, 2024, was set as the deadline for the full network, barring subscribers with four or fewer SIMs that had unverified NIN details.

This deadline was then extended to July 31, 2024, to give consumers more time to ensure their submitted NIN details are properly verified. Despite these extensions, many phone lines are yet to be linked with verified NINs.

The Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, yesterday disclosed that it would be difficult for the state to pay the Federal Government approved N70,000 minimum wage due to the lean allocation it receives.

On the donated trucks of rice to states, the governor commended the Federal Government for the initiative.

I’ll work with Wike if he apologises — Kingibe

The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, has said that she is willing to work with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, if he apologises for comments made about her activities as a lawmaker.

Recall that the minister threatened to unseat the lawmaker in 2027 after he claimed the Senator queried his activities in the territory, including the rot in schools, and the deplorable state of hospitals across the FCT.

The minister in responding to Kingibe’s comments, asked what she had done as Senator representing the FCT, adding that she could go “hang on a transformer” if she was displeased with his and the Minister of State’s progress and successes.

“You, as a legislator, what have you done? How many bills have you sponsored for us to improve our education and health sector? I challenge that legislator. If you are very popular, in 2027 come and run under Abuja, we will fail you.

“The Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, and I have not been in office for more than 11 months and the person is angry that people are praising us. If you don’t want, or you are angry about that, go and hang yourself in a transformer”, he said.

However, in an interview on Channels Television Political Paradigm, of which a short clip was posted on the broadcast station’s YouTube Channel on Wednesday, the Senator said she would work with Wike if the latter apologises for his comments, noting that she was older and that he shouldn’t have addressed her in that manner.

“I’m actually willing to do everything to work with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, as long as he apologises first for saying I should go and hang on a transformer.

“Once he does that, it is all over. We can start afresh but until then, everybody stays in your lane. With all due respect, I am so much older than him. Even courtesy demands he should not speak to me like that.

“He doesn’t understand the concept of the FCT. If he did, it is nothing personal. He says ‘I don’t want to be her friend.’ How does governance translate into friendship?” she added.

Protest: Cross River College sends all students home in fear

The Management of College of Health Technology Calabar has closed today due to fears of the impending planned protest billed to commence Thursday 1st August 2024, which federal and state governments fear might become violent.
The school has forced all boarding students as well as day students to vacate the premises this afternoon.
The school management summoned all students to an emergency meeting where a decision of management was announced.
“We won’t be able to provide security for students in the event that the planned protest turns out to be bloody and destructive. We remember how the school was affected four years ago during the ENDSARS protest which was hijacked by hoodlums”, an official of the school who gave his name as Ibor Ikpi said.

GMOs distort natural cycle of human cells, capable of wiping out species – Molecular Biologist

0

Experts and advocates have raised concerns over the laws governing the importation of Genetically Modified Organisms into the country, noting that it does not provide for liability and leaves the sector open to abuse.
They alleged that the uncensored flooding of Nigerian markets with products that are derivatives of GMO is a calculated attempt by unscrupulous regulators to endanger the health and lives of unsuspecting consumers.
Warning that GMOs distort the natural cycle of the human cell, a Molecular Biologist at the Niger Delta University, Professor Tatfeng, tasked the government to beware of the environmental, ecological and health concerns scientifically proven to emanate from GMO toxicity in the human system.
Professor Tatfeng who raised the concerns at a workshop organized by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation, HOMEF, for a cross-section of judicial officers in Abuja, cautioned that attempts by some individuals to dabble into gene editing, synthetic biology or genetic engineering signals a threat to the country’s biodiversity and could lead to the extinction of species and naturally endowed varieties.
‘‘We are still struggling with the regulation of basic aspects of Biosafety but regulators want to dabble into genetic engineering, ‘gene drive’ organisms which has the potential of wiping off whole species of organisms.
‘‘We note that this is unnatural, poses a severe threat to nature, the health of the people, our biodiversity and ecological systems as well as jeopardises our environmental sustainability, Prof Tatfeng warned.
He also called attention to the gaps in the existing Biosafety legislation in the country, saying, ‘‘The Act has major fundamental flaws such as the absence of strict liability and redress in case damage arising from the release of GMOs into the environment, the composition of the Board- NABDA with no farmers or consumers, poor access to information for consumers, lack of mandatory and clear labelling of GM products, infringing on the peoples ‘Right to Know’, and apparent conflict of interests’’.
The University Don alleged that there appears to be an unholy alliance between the regulator and the regulated as the Biosafety Agency, NBMA often endorses activities of GMO promoters rather than actually regulating them.
Meanwhile, Dr Nnimmo Bassey, Director of the Ecological Think-Tank at HOMEF emphasized that it had become expedient to engage the judiciary for a better understanding of the cons of biotechnology with regards to cases that may arise from its wrong application in future.
He appealed to the members of the bar and bench, to keep abreast of the legal framework and legislations governing GMOs in Nigeria, especially as it borders on rights to food choices and food sovereignty.
‘‘It is important that all stakeholders have a deep understanding of the implications of this technology to ensure informed decisions both in the legislative, judicial and executive arm of government.
‘‘We need judges to better interpret and apply biosafety regulations that align with both legal principles and public safety’’, Nnimmo noted.

We registered Ofili for 100m, AFN insists

0

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has said the body can’t explain how the name of the women’s 100m national champion, Favour Ofili, is missing from the women’s 100m event of the Paris Olympics Games, insisting she was registered for the 100m, 200m, and the women’s 4x100m relay.

Ofili raised the alarm on Tuesday night, accusing the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the AFN of failing to register her.

“It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 meters at this Olympic Games. I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter me. I have worked for 4 years to earn this opportunity. For what,” Ofili lamented.

Technical Director of the AFN, Samuel Onikeku however said the body is as shocked as the athlete over the development.

“We registered Ofili for the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m relay. We don’t know how her name got missing in the 100m. This is our stand as a federation,” Onikeku said via AFN Media.

However, a check on the entry list published by the World Athletics shows that Ofili will be competing in the 200m and women’s 4x100m relay.

Ofili qualified for the women’s 100m during the AFN National Trials which was held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City in June. She had a new personal best of 11.06s to secure her first national title as well.

In April, she hit the Olympics 200m mark at the Tom Jones Memorial Classic with a time of 22.33s.

The athletics event of the Paris Games will get underway on Thursday with the men’s 20m race walk.

The first round of the women’s 100m, which Ofili has cried foul play over, will begin on Friday.

The Bauchi State Government has announced plans to embark on a comprehensive rehabilitation of the National Youth Service Corps camp in Wailo village, Ganjuwa Local Government Area of the state.

This decision was disclosed by the State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, during a facility tour to assess the condition of the camp on Tuesday.

The governor’s visit revealed the dire state of the camp, which has been in disrepair for some time.

The governor expressed concern over the inadequate facilities and infrastructure, which have hindered the smooth operation of the NYSC programme in the state.

He emphasised, “Given the importance of the NYSC scheme
