Iheanacho completes Sevilla switch

0

Kelechi Iheanacho has completed his transfer to Sevilla on a free transfer, signing two-year contract, According Sports Extra reports.

The 27-year-old arrived at the La Liga club for his medical on Tuesday, which was concluded on Wednesday, followed by the signing of the contract that makes him the club’s fifth summer signing after Nigeria teammate Chidera Ejuke, Peque, Saúl and Lokonga.

The former Leicester City striker signed for two seasons, with the option for one more, arriving on a free transfer after his time at Leicester City.

In 2017, Iheanacho joined Leicester City, a club where he had already spent some time on loan in their youth academy after arriving in the Old Continent. With the then recent Premier League champions in 15-16, he played a total of 232 matches in all competitions, with 61 goals and 34 assists during this last period, extended until this last campaign 23-24.

The new Sevilla striker has also played a total of 19 European competition matches: seven in the Champions League, 11 in the UEFA Europa League, and one in the Conference League.

As for his numbers with the senior team, it is worth noting that to date he has played 55 matches and scored 19 goals.

His greatest achievement came in 2015 with the conquest of the U-17 World Cup in Chile, helping Nigeria to their fifth record triumph and bagging the golden ball as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Although it may seem that Sevilla is not completely complete in its forward line, the signing of Iheanacho comes to replace En-Nesyri, while another of the summer signings, like Peque, although his usual position in Santander was that of attacking midfielder, for his new coach he counts as a forward. That is, he will occupy the space left by Rafa Mir. The attacking front line would already be complete. And that is before the month of August has even started.

Cornerstone Insurance upbeat on recapitalisation

0

Cornerstone Insurance Plc has said that it is well positioned for any recapitalisation measures to be announced by the National Insurance Commission.

This was disclosed by the firm’s Managing Director, Stephen Alangbo, during the 32nd annual general meeting held in Lagos on Wednesday.

He said, “We are well positioned for any recapitalisation measures that may be introduced by the regulator. We believe that this will enhance our financial stability, expand our underwriting capacity and allow us to invest in new technologies and innovative products.

“As we look ahead, we remain steadfast in our vision of becoming the leading insurance-based financial services group. Our commitment to being a responsible and sustainable business that creates long-term value for all our stakeholders remains unwavering. We will continue to innovate, invest in our people, invest in technology, and operate with integrity while staying responsive to the evolving needs of our customers and communities.”

The Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Bill 2024, which has scaled a second reading on the floor of the Senate, is seeking to increase the minimum capital requirement of life insurance companies from the current N2bn to N15bn, and general business from N3bn to N25bn.

This means that the reinsurance business will be increasing from N10bn to N45bn.

The new bill comes during an ongoing recapitalisation exercise by Nigerian banks.

At the AGM, some shareholders expressed concerns about the recapitalisation move and its impact on the business.

The National Coordinator of the Independent Shareholders Association of Nigeria, Moses Igbrude, asked, “What are you as a company doing to envisage the outcome of the bill? How are you preparing your preparation will help us in the years ahead?”

Another shareholder, Nornah Awoh, echoed similar sentiments, asking what the company was going to do differently.

“If you ask me, I would say that the 25 kobo (dividend), which is the highest in the history of the company is even low for you to pay us this year but I’m conscious of recapitalisation. So what are you going to do differently? It is easy for us to collect 16 Kobo today and be clapping and you come tomorrow to say, ‘Go and bring money’,” he averred.

Meanwhile, the chairman of Cornerstone Insurance, Segun Adebanji, stated that the firm was targeting to improve insurance penetration in Nigeria by boosting its retail business.

He said, “We are placing a significant emphasis on improving insurance penetration within Nigeria by growing our retail business. By expanding our reach and making insurance products more accessible to the wider population, it is our goal to enhance financial security and resilience among Nigerians. The focus on retail growth will be a key driver of our strategy to increase market penetration and foster a more inclusive Insurance landscape.”

For the financial year ended December 2023, Cornerstone Insurance recorded 38 per cent growth in its topline to N30.6bn from N22.2bn in 2022.

Following the implementation of the new IFRS 17 standards, the group reported an insurance revenue of N25.91bn for the year under review, representing a 26.5 per cent growth compared to N20.48bn in the prior year.

Its profit before tax stood at N17.08bn, indicating a rise over the restated IFRS 17 loss of N1.06bn recorded in the previous year.

  • Academic researches should solve local problems – TETFund

    0

The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Sonny Echono, has called on academics in the country to focus on researches that would solve local problems.

This was as he urged the government to invest more in research, saying it is the way to the future of the country.

Echono made the call on Wednesday while delivering the keynote address at the 2024 Research and Innovation Fair of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

He spoke on the theme: ‘The Rise of Research in Driving Sustainable Development’.

Represented by a former OAU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Michael Faborode, the TETFund boss said, “The academics need to work more on products and policies that can impact our lives. Research by itself is not enough. It is when research becomes innovation and products that it can impact the nation.

“Our research must be geared towards solving our local problems in a way that will be compatible with international expectations in terms of quality and meeting the global standard and we must be committed to this.”

Echono called on the government to prioritise investment in research and harness the potential of the youth.

He said, “Research is the only way for us to be able to make progress in this country, not food palliative or protest. Let us harness the huge potential and energy of the youths. Our youths should not use their knowledge for Internet fraud.

“The research fair is a good step because the concern is why our research has not been going out to impact society for sustainable development.

“We are not investing enough in research in Nigeria because we don’t seem to appreciate the value of research. We just believe things happen but development doesn’t happen like that. What we are enjoying today is a product of one research or the other.

“The government must realise that these things have to be funded. If you don’t fund research, you cannot get the products of research and you cannot continue to depend on other countries, otherwise, we will continue to be an import-oriented country and a consumer of innovation and technology and no country can move forward with that.”

In his goodwill message, the Osun State Commissioner for Education, Dipo Eluwole, said the state government would leverage research to boost food security in the state.

FG distributes N2.8bn inputs to Enugu, Anambra farmers

    0

The Federal Government has begun the distribution of agro-inputs worth N2.8bn to 14,000 farmers in Anambra and Enugu states under the Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Programme, Phase One.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, disclosed this on Tuesday during the agro-inputs distribution of the National Agricultural Growth Scheme Agro Pocket in ATASP-1 Adani-Omor Zone in Ikem, Isi-Uzo council area.

Kyari, represented by the Director II, Programme Coordinating Unit in the ministry, Dr Peter Kush, said the distributed farm inputs to ATASP-1 farmers were redeemed at subsidised rate.

The minister said Adani-Omor zone had not benefited from the subsidised inputs because it was off-season at the time of planning, hence, the need to implement the programme in Enugu and Anambra states.

He said the inputs were procured at the cost of N5bn but offered to the farmers at the subsidised sum of N2.8bn.

“Each of the benefitting farmers will receive a package of two bags of inorganic NPK/Urea fertilizer, one bag of organic fertiliser, 10kg of seeds of either maize/rice/sorghum and four litres of agrochemicals delivered through ICT platform,” he said.

Kyari said the agricultural policy of the Federal Government was aimed at the attainment of food sufficiency and overall socio-economic development in the country.

He said: “Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government is currently implementing the National Agricultural Growth Scheme Agro-Pocket across the nation.

“Farmers have been registered and agro-inputs are being distributed to the farmers in the last dry season and the current rainy season.

“This significant milestone marks a crucial step in our commitment to empowering our farmers and enhancing agricultural productivity.

“By providing quality inputs, we aim to support our farmers in achieving higher yields and ensuring food security for Nigeria.”

Flagging off the distribution, Governor  Peter Mbah of Enugu State appreciated President Tinubu for his visionary agricultural policies.

Mbah, represented by the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Patrick Ubru, said the offering of subsidised inputs was a crucial step towards enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring food security in our state.

“I commend the Federal Government for its commitment to providing agricultural inputs to our smallholder farmers, a move that resonates with the agenda of my administration in agriculture,” he said.

Earlier, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Foster Ihejiofor, also hailed the initiative.

“The ATASP-1 has been highly beneficial to the participating communities in Anambra State and contributed to the educational and health well-being of our people,” the governor said.

FG to spend $7.2bn on two deep seaport projects

    0

The Federal Government might be spending about $7.2bn to complete two approved deep seaports across the country.

The projects are Ibom, Badagry, and Deep Seaports.

In December 2020, the Akwa Ibom State Government said the Federal Government had approved $2.016bn for the first phase of Ibom Deep Seaport, which was estimated to cost $4.6bn.

This was disclosed in Uyo by the then Akwa-Ibom State Commissioner for Economic Development and IDSP, Akan Okon.

He said the Federal Executive Council approved the implementation of the first phase of IDSP on December 16, 2020, adding that the port would address issues of unemployment in Akwa Ibom and also enable the state to implement schemes for job creation and poverty alleviation.

According to Okon, upon completion of the project, it is expected to generate no fewer than 300,000 jobs in Akwa Ibom.

“Akwa Ibom is industrialised because this project, when operational, would solve and arrest critical problems in the state, especially the issue of unemployment, and then stimulate our state economy accordingly. The total cost of construction of the Ibom Deep Seaport is $4.6bn but the first phase of it is $2.016bn which was approved on Wednesday, December 16, by the Federal Government,” Okon said.

On March 1, 2022, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced that the Badagry Deep Seaport project, estimated at $2.59bn expected to be one of the largest in Africa, would kick off in June.

Sanwo-Olu said this in Badagry during a stakeholders’ meeting on the Badagry Deep Seaport and Free Zone Project.

The plan to begin construction of the seaport, which will be hosted by 12 communities in Badagry, came after 10 years of conceiving the idea in 2012, during the administration of former Governor Babatunde Fashola.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the Badagry Deep Seaport Project is not just one project but a multi-level opportunity for progress for all the people of the state, given the volume of trade and quantum of investment opportunities that would spring up in the area when the project commences, and when it is completed and operational.

“Very importantly, employment and capacity building for the teeming youth and women in the affected communities will be prioritised. When fully operational, it will not only boost the fortunes of the people of Badagry but, also transform the entire economy of our state and that of the entire West African sub-region,” he said.

Meanwhile, stakeholders have said that the broader implications of those unfinished projects are substantial, expressing frustration over the lack of progress.

The President of the National Association of Master Mariners, Captain Tajudeen Alao, noted that the country did not need many deep seaports but smart ports.

He said that the country needed a few deep seaports and the use of feeder vessels to other ports.

“How much import and export are we planning for? We need to rethink so that we don’t have redundant ports like Sapele, Koko, and Calabar,” he stated.

According to Alao, if the country can establish integrated evacuation logistics, rail, road, and barges and provide constant security,

“We need to get a transport policy in place and a short-, medium-ium, and long-term strategies,” he posited.

A master mariner, Captain Adewale Ishola, added, “They have all done their visibility studies, with the NPA also going into approving their plans. Projects like this require capital. So, if they are not serious, investors will not show interest in the projects.”

According to Captain Ogunshakin Rotimi-William, those projects are capital intensive and at the moment, the Federal Government has so many projects at hand.

“Those deep seaports are very important because some vessels can’t come in because of the depth of the sea. But if they have these seaports, it will create more jobs for those cabbage small vessels and seafarers. So, the reasons that seem to have stalled the projects may be because of finance and political interest. Some politicians would be asking why they didn’t come to do it in my area,” he postulated.

Over 70 illegal refineries bombed in three months – NAF

    0

The Nigerian Air Force said its Operation Delta Safe had in the last three months destroyed more than 70 illegal refining sites and 80 overhead tanks.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, said this while hosting the National Coordinator, Messrs New Guard Security and Consulting Limited, Maj. Gen. Jamil Sarham (retd.), and his team at the NAF headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting was revealed in a statement on Wednesday by NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, AVM Edward Gabkwet.

Abubakar said that the menace of oil theft and pipeline vandalism had led to a significant decline in crude oil production and substantial revenue loss to the nation.

He added that the environmental consequences of the illegal activities had also led to air pollution and waterway contamination with attendant effects on aquatic life and agriculture.

According to him, it was in response to these challenges that the armed forces were mandated to eradicate the scourge of oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta region, with the aim of boosting oil production output.

“Over the past year, the NAF has conducted 463 sorties in 560 flight hours and expended 175,000 litres of Jet A-1 fuel in air operations over the Niger Delta region.

“In bolstering these efforts, some newly inducted platforms have recently been deployed to the region and beyond.

“This is to enable the NAF to cover more grounds as it liaises with other security agencies in degrading the activities of these criminals in the region.”

The CAS lauded the team’s exceptional military background, expressing optimism that their collaboration with other security agencies in addressing the challenges of crude oil theft would add bites to the ongoing efforts.

He said the visit had laid a solid foundation for greater cooperation and synergy between the NAF and the firm with potential positive impacts on Nigeria’s national defence and security.

According to him, the visit marked a pivotal step towards enhancing the security of Nigeria’s oil infrastructure and addressing the economic and environmental challenges posed by oil theft.

Seplat commits to tech innovation in energy sector

    0

Seplat Energy Plc has shown its determination to lead innovations in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector through technology.

At the just concluded Seplat Technology Summit in Lagos, the Chief Executive Officer of Seplat Energy, Roger Brown, emphasised the vital role of technological advancements in advancing the energy sector.

Brown, who was represented by the Chief Operating Officer of Seplat Energy, Samson Ezugworie, disclosed that the firm had been using technology to solve problems in the industry.

“Seplat has become a leading Nigerian energy company, we have achieved this leading role by leveraging technology. For us, it is all about how we can be safer, cheaper, more efficient, and faster in our known space, and then how we can break new ground. We are all gathered here to find lasting solutions to our lingering problems in our industry because if we do that, our industry will grow and continue to win,” Brown said.

The summit, themed “Leveraging Technology across the Energy Value Chain to Unlock Transformational Potential”, attracted industry leaders, technology enthusiasts, students, and professionals from around the world to explore innovative solutions and advancements in the oil and gas sector.

The two-day event focused on addressing the pressing challenges faced by the energy industry as attendees were introduced to technologies aimed at transforming upstream operations, renewable energy, and optimising gas transportation networks.

The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Farouk Ahmed, who was represented by a Senior Technical Adviser of the NMDPRA, Steve Ayuba, highlighted the need for collaboration and innovation among industry players and regulatory authorities.

“We know clearly that technology optimises how business is being done and for us in the regulatory ecosystem, technology is being used as an enabler that will help us to optimise the impact that we must be seen to be created by ensuring that exceptional regulatory services are delivered to all the players in this value chain,” Ahmed said.

The Managing Director of ANOH Gas Processing Company Limited, Effiong Okon, noted the multifaceted role of technology in making oil and gas exploration seamless, efficient, and safe.

Okon remarked, “There are areas for different technology deployment for future growth. We use technology to help drive down crude theft, which is a unique issue in Nigeria. For us in Seplat, we really cannot achieve our purpose – which is to deliver sustainable energy solutions for society – without technology. So, our purpose is going to be achieved through technology.”

Monarchs urged to support Dangote refinery

    0

Youths in Lagos State have charged traditional rulers in Yoruba land to rally around the $20bn Dangote oil refinery, being the host of the facility.

The youths, who appreciated President Bola Tinubu for approving the sale of crude oil to the refinery in naira, said they had earlier threatened to take to the streets if the Federal Government had failed to resolve the issues ignited by the comments from the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Farouk Ahmed, who said the refinery was producing high sulphur diesel.

The youths, under the aegis of the Lagos Advocacy Group, Lekki Empire Advocacy Forum, and Yoruba Youth Advocacy Forum, spoke Tuesday at a press conference held in Lagos.

Speaking on behalf of the youths, the Convener of the Lagos Advocacy Group, Barrister Yakubu Eleto, appealed to all the traditional rulers in the South-West to rally around the refinery because it is located in Yoruba land.

“The royal fathers should not allow the great investment to die, as posterity will judge them if they fail to talk now,” he stated.

According to Eleto, the alleged refusal of international oil companies to sell crude oil to Dangote at the market price and the attempt by some cabal to demarket the refinery demands the monarchs’ immediate attention and collective action as stakeholders in the host community.

He said the efforts of the Federal Government to attract foreign investors would not have succeeded if Aliko Dangote was seen to be frustrated despite his huge investments in Nigeria.

Aside from that, the convener maintained that the failure of the 650,000-capacity refinery would mean that over 10,000 youths would not have access to jobs that would have been available to them at the refinery.

“As stakeholders in the Lagos and South-West community, we are out to resolve the disputes by calling for more amicable resolution between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the management of Dangote refinery. We are happy the president has taken the first step. But we demand transparency in the refinery’s operations and government regulations. We demand accountability from the government for their actions and claims against the Dangote refinery.

“We call on the government not to frustrate the project and ensure it makes it work for the people of Nigeria, considering the public’s interest, and ensuring the refinery’s operations benefit the community.

“We call on the Government to open channels for continuous round table discussion with the Dangote management so as to facilitate mutually beneficial solutions. We want the Federal Government to note that resolving amicably with Dangote will lead to economic growth as the refinery operations will contribute to the development of the country,” the legal practitioner stated.

To address pricing challenges, the groups advocated for collaborative agreements between Dangote and independent marketers, stating that the facilitation of direct sales and distribution channels could stabilise prices and ensure wider market access for Dangote’s refined products.

Such collaborations, he opined, would also mitigate the impact of international market fluctuations on the local fuel market, providing more stability for consumers and businesses alike.

He urged the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission to prioritise domestic crude allocations to local refineries, including Dangote’s, to enhance energy security and economic stability.

“We also urge the Federal Government to reassess the licensing and regulatory framework to prevent the importation of substandard fuels and support local refining initiatives. The Federal Government’s integrity will be restored as a government that is not out to frustrate indigenous investors and be seen by the international community as a country that is interested in investors,” he advised.

After weeks of crying out over the lack of crude supply, the Federal Government on Tuesday said the 450,000 barrels meant for domestic consumption be sold to the Dangote refinery and other refineries in naira.

This came after many top Nigerians stood up in defence of Dangote after the NMDPRA boss accused the President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote

Bola Tinubu, of planning to be a monopolist by seeking an end to fuel importation, despite producing dirty fuel.

The National Assembly has since launched an investigation into the controversies.
