0

Major cities across the country are witnessing protests as the highly anticipated nationwide hunger protest begins today.

Demonstrators are seen carrying placards and chanting slogans, with photos and videos flooding social media.

In a video shared by news platform Oxygist, a protester identified as Emmanuel explained his reasons for participating.

“Today is a hunger day. Hunger has brought me out. Insecurity has brought me out. I don’t have money to buy fuel. If our demands are not met, we will remain in the streets.  We cannot keep quiet,” he said.

Hunger protesters on Thursday converged on the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Another unidentified protester pleaded with the President, “Mr President, the hardship is too much. We are suffering in this country. You tell us every time to endure. For how long?”

Placards reading “Say no to hardship,” “End Bad Governance,” and others are visible in the videos.

Protesters in Lagos were seen singing “End bad governance,” while a group in Port Harcourt, aired by AIT, sang the old national anthem.

In Abuja, demonstrators chanted “Revolution” songs.

The protests, triggered by the prevailing economic hardship, are expected to continue until August 10, 2024.

The Ekiti State Command of the Department of State Service (DSS) has revealed a shocking twist in the abduction case of Professor Olorunfemi Olaofe, former Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University (EKSU).
According to a statement released on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti, Olaofe’s domestic staff masterminded his abduction, leading to his gruesome murder.
Professor Olaofe was kidnapped from his residence on July 9, and an investigation by the DSS and other security agencies uncovered a sinister plot.
The statement disclosed that the domestic staff, in collaboration with seven suspected kidnappers, orchestrated the abduction.
Tragically, the investigation led to the discovery of Olaofe’s remains buried in a shallow grave at a farm settlement along Airport Road, Ijan-Ekiti.
The DSS expressed gratitude to the state government for its support in the investigation and announced that the case would be transferred to the State Police Command for prosecution, having established a case of homicide.

The statement reads, “The Department of of State Service (DSS), Ekiti state command in collaboration with other security agencies in the state wishes ro alert the general public on the uncovering of fhe gruesome murder of Olorunfemi Olaofe (Prof).
“This was occasioned by the planned kidnap of Olaofe (Prof) by a gang of about seven suspected kidnappers at his residence, located at plot 12, 15th avenue, federal housing phase II, Ado Ekiti on 9th July, 2024.
“Investigation activities revealed that the kidnap incident was masterminded by the domestic staff, who invited others in carrying out the dastardly act.
“However, further investigation by the operatives of the command led to the discovery of Olaofe’s remains buried in a shallow grave at a farm settlement along Airport Road, Ijan-Ekiti
“In the light of the above, the command wishes to dress its profound gratitude to the state government for her invaluable support in the course of the ongoing investigation.
However, the case will soon be transferred to the State Police Command for prosecution having established a case of homicide”.
This shocking revelation has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the brutality of the crime and the betrayal of trust by Olaofe’s domestic staff. The case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of kidnapping and the importance of thorough investigations in bringing perpetrators to justice.

One of the solicitors to the protesters, Deji Adeyanju, has advised the Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner, Bennett Igweh, against allowing the protests to degenerate into violence.

His advice is coming following the CP’s insistence that the protesters must go inside the stadium.

Addressing journalists, Adeyanju said the police should allow the protest to continue their peaceful demonstrations

“We have been intervening to ensure the protest remains peaceful but if they don’t appreciate our interventions and want the protest to degenerate, so be it.

“This is not the first time the police will attack us. We are used to it,” he said

  • Nationwide protest: Julius Berger suspends construction works in Delta

    0

Construction giant Julius Berger has abandoned the ongoing construction at DSC roundabout, PTI Junction in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State due to the nationwide protest against bad governance in Nigeria over fears of its workers being attacked, robbed and possibly kidnapped with attendant destruction of equipment.
TVN correspondent currently monitoring the protest around town reports that the construction workers evacuated from the site two days ago.
Commenting on the development human rights activist, Harrison Itulua said: “Today being the first day of August 2024 that’s supposed to be the commencement of the protest, we are not against peaceful protest but against violent protest whereby youths will burn tyres on the streets, block the roads, depriving others of their rights. Inasmuch as they have their right to peaceful protest, others have their right to free movements.
“One of the dangers of violent protest is we will scare developers away from the state and Nigeria at large. For instance, the Delta State Government has paid heavily for the construction of flyovers within PTI Junction, Enerhen Junction and DSC Roundabout. Surprisingly, construction giant Julius Berger evacuated the site during our monitoring of the protest exercise for dear of the unknown so that hoodlums do not hijack the protest. Since the president has given us his word that NNPCL should sell crude oil to Dangote in naira as well as adopt other measures, I think we should give him some time because we don’t want our state to be 10 years backwards.”
He stressed that the violent protest during the ENDSARS in 2020 in Udu communities led to the destruction of many banks. “This is the reason we are calling for a peaceful protest,” he said.

He said that to monitor activities between law enforcement agents and protesters, a situation monitoring committee has been set up.
According to the statement: “The President of the Nigerian Bar Association Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, has yesterday, July 31, 2024, directed all the Chairmen/Chairpersons of the 130 branches of the NBA to ensure that their respective human rights committees take up observed or reported cases of breach of fundamental right (s) of any citizen, harassment, intimidation or torture perpetrated by law enforcement agents, the protesters or other identified members of the public in the course of the protest.”
