Cargo clearance activities at Tincan Island and Apapa ports in Lagos were slowed down on Friday due to ongoing protests in the country.
A visit by a NAN correspondent to these ports observed a minimal presence of clearing agents, leading to reduced cargo clearance operations.
Mr Usman Abubakar, Public Relations Officer of Apapa Customs Command, confirmed the low turnout, attributing it to the protests.
He noted that while operations improved slightly compared to Thursday, when the protests started, they were still not back to normal.
Abubakar urged port users to expedite cargo clearance to create space for incoming vessels.
Mr Tony Ibe, a freight forwarder at Tincan Island port, explained that many agents stayed away on Thursday, fearing access restrictions due to the protests.
Mr Tochukwu Atuegwe of Praise God Clearing Agents confirmed a better turnout on Friday and urged agents to resume normal operations on Monday.
He noted that customs officers and terminal operators were available to clear cargo from the ports.
Mr Adepoju Gbojubade, another clearing agent at Apapa Port, said that there was swift cargo clearance due to the reduced number of agents.
He mentioned that the situation was gradually normalising as port authorities and stakeholders worked to restore full operations and address the backlog of cargoes.

Waziri maintained “So basically I was very peaceful. There were not more than ten of us but I was the only one actually standing in front of the Government House just to raise our placards that said ‘Employment should be for all”, “Everybody should be allowed to be employed’, ‘Inclusive Society’.

Obi debunks protest video as fake, rubbishes reports of declaring war on northerners
Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has denied a trending video alleging that he declared war on northerners, describing the video as a manipulated, deliberate and well-orchestrated efforts by some persons to blackmail him into conforming to some of their nefarious agendas.
Obi who reacted to the video in a post on his X handle on Friday, said the dubious moves by some people had led to the false circulation of a video from his recent keynote speech at the installation of Rotarian, Professor A. U. Nnonyelu in Anambra State.
In a series of tweets, the former Anambra State governor said those who did the hachet job twisted the video to suit their motive to suggest that he had declared war on Northerners.
He added that the misrepresentation was part of a larger narrative of blackmail, aimed at fitting him into their malicious agenda.
“I have noticed some deliberate and well-orchestrated efforts by some persons to blackmail me into conforming to some of their nefarious agendas,” Obi said.
“Their dubious moves have led to the false circulation of a video from my recent keynote speech at the installation of Rotarian Professor A. U. Nnonyelu in Anambra State.
“They have twisted the video to suit their motive to suggest that I declared war on Northerners when, in fact, I spoke about declaring war on economic stagnation, insecurity, and corruption.

“Another video circulating online, supposedly showing me leading a protest in Abuja, is also false.
“The video was actually taken during my visit to the Labour Party HQ, where I mediated a clash between the Labour Party and the NLC.
“The video was conveniently edited to create a false narrative, and those responsible have been paid to spread this misinformation.
“This kind of misinformation has no place in our democracy, where truth and honesty should prevail.
“This misrepresentation is part of a larger narrative of blackmail, aimed at fitting me into their malicious agenda.

[PICTORIAL] Osun protesters observe jumaat prayers on road
Residents of Osun State mainly youths on Friday continued the protest in Osogbo, the state capital, demanding reversal of fuel subsidy removal and stoppage of naira devaluation.
The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest had commenced in the state on Thursday and at the Friday procession, the protesters, who converged on Friday Park, Osogbo, were accompanied by police operatives, men and officers of Nigeria Civil Defence Corps and Nigeria Immigration Service, alongside operatives of Department of State Security.

Moving through MDS road to Olaiya Junction before heading to Odi-Olowo Street, Osogbo, the protesters accused the federal and state governments of inflicting hardship on Nigerians, insisting that the protest would continue until their demands were met.
The protesters after returning to Olaiya Junction, performed ablution and observed jumaat on the road, while security men who went across the town with them, provided cover while the prayers lasted.
After the prayers, led by one of the protesters, the participants dispersed.
Speaking with journalists, the convener of Nigeria for Good Governance, Wole Oladapo, accused the Federal and State Governments of misplaced priority, adding that the current protest would be a test case, as the displeasure of the masses was gradually building up.

Oladapo said, “It keeps getting from bad to worse and we seem to be at the worst now. The president decided to, by fiat remove fuel subsidy. The entire nation has come into jeopardy. To double the jeopardy, they floated the naira and devalued it so terribly.
“We told the federal government when the subsidy would be removed that you can’t rob Peter to pay Paul. We accept subsidy is a scam. But you didn’t sit down to analyse the subsidy regime, you removed it. You took the money from that and gave it to governors, another set of looters and now, Nigerians can no longer survive.
“We knew how state allocation increased since the subsidy was removed but have we seen the effects on the masses? No! In Osun State, under Aregbesola, he recognised that there was poverty among the youth and he took youths and gave them jobs and they contributed to the economy of the state through the job he gave them.

“That continued until Governor Adeleke came into office. In the almost 2 years, we have not seen anything. In 2 terms, Aregbesola did 40,000 youth employment, this administration has not done one even though the money that Tinubu took from Nigerians and gave to the governors has led to an increase in allocation to the state.
He said that the resources of the local government had been cornered by the state.
He further stated that their aim was to inform the President, National Assembly members, and governors that the anger of Nigerians had not yet begun, but when it did, they might not survive it.
“That is why they should listen to what the masses are saying at a gathering like this. Our demands include; return fuel subsidy, stopping the devaluation of the naira, open borders for food to come in. Tinubu is doing a road for N15 trillion naira at the expense of the people. The same thing is happening in Osun,” he added.
Also speaking, the Osun Coordinator of Coalition of Concern Nigeria Citizen, Adetunji Ajala, said measures were in place to ensure that the protest remain peaceful.
Lagos, Rotary to partner on humanitarian services

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged his administration’s commitment to collaborating with Rotary International to enhance humanitarian services in the state.
The announcement came during a meeting with the District Governors of Rotary International Districts 9112 and 9111, Rotarian Olufemi Adenekan and Rotarian Oluwole Kukoyi, at Lagos House, Marina.
In his statement shared on social media on Thursday, Sanwo-Olu expressed his appreciation for the work Rotary International does globally and locally, highlighting the organisation’s core principles of service and addressing urgent community needs.
“Today, I welcomed the District Governors of Rotary International Districts 9112 and 9111, Rotarian Olufemi Adenekan and Rotarian Oluwole Kukoyi, to Lagos House, Marina. During our meeting, I reiterated our dedication to collaborating so as to strengthen humanitarian services and tackle the urgent needs of our citizens, which are core principles of Rotary International,” the governor wrote.
The governor emphasised the importance of partnership between the government and non-governmental organisations like Rotary International in delivering impactful projects and services.
The collaboration aims to address various issues such as healthcare, education, and community development, which are vital for improving the quality of life for Lagos residents.
The meeting marks a significant step towards fostering public-private partnerships that can effectively tackle the socio-economic challenges facing Lagos State.
By leveraging Rotary International’s extensive network and experience in humanitarian efforts, the state government aims to enhance its capacity to meet the needs of its citizens.

EndBadGovernance: Your grievances noted – Speaker commends peaceful protest in Lagos
Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa on Friday commended Nigerians protesting against hunger and hardship in the state for their peaceful conduct so far.
Obasa’s commendation came on Friday, the second day of the EndBadGovernance protest, in Lagos.
Recall that protesters gathered on Thursday in different parts of the country, demanding government action to check the high cost of living in Nigeria.
The protests began despite appeals by the government to the organisers to shelve the demonstrations.
Reacting to the protest, the speaker in a statement on Friday said the protesters in the state mostly carried out their actions in accordance with the law.
He commended the protesters for allowing residents to go about their activities in peace.
He said: “The conduct of protesters in the state since the nationwide protest began on Thursday is worthy of emulation.
“While several residents heeded the voice of reason and stayed away, those who decided to publicly express their grievances did so within the confines of the law.
“These grievances have been noted and I am convinced that the state and federal governments are not folding their arms in relation to making Lagos and Nigeria greater than we are currently witnessing.
“President Bola Tinubu is championing policies that ultimately have the tendency to move Nigeria to the level we all anticipate.
“In the meantime, he has taken steps to mitigate the challenges of food shortage upon which the protest is hinged.
“In Lagos, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu with the support of the House of Assembly under my speakership, has provided roadmaps for more developments aside sustaining standards.”

Coca-Cola, NBC guilty of misleading customers, says FCCPC

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has taken action against Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and Nigerian Bottling Company Limited for violating consumer rights.
The commission disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
The FCCPC launched an investigation in June 2019 after discovering that the companies had migrated their Coke brand to non-nutritive sweeteners without transparently disclosing the change to consumers.
“The commission was convinced based on the evidence that Coca-Cola and NBC on multiple occasions, and counts violated, and remained in violation of the FCCPA, particularly with respect to transparency, and clear disclosure obligations to their product patrons,” the statement read.
According to the FCCPC, the companies initially agreed to adopt clearer product descriptions and differentiations but later abandoned the agreement, opting for a different business strategy that failed to meet regulatory standards.
“Coca-Cola and NBC have made more spirited efforts at other interventions to address the regulatory concerns than measures to ensure compliance, and discharge from the regulatory process,” the FCCPC stated.
The Final Order issued by the FCCPC on July 29, 2024, found Coca-Cola and NBC guilty of misleading trade descriptions, unfair marketing tactics, and deceptive trade practices.
The commission has reserved the question of abuse of dominance and the quantum of the penalty for further regulatory action.
“We are committed to protecting consumers from unfair and deceptive business practices.
“Companies must comply with regulatory standards and prioritise transparency and consumer welfare,” it added.
