Allow peace in Rivers, South-South monarchs, others tell Wike

0

South-South Chiefs, elders, and opinion leaders have expressed concern over the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State and have called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to allow peace to prevail in the state.

They also urged Wike, whom they described as ‘Oga in Abuja’, to respect the rule of law and acknowledge that he is no longer governor. They stressed that he should allow his successor, Siminalayi Fubara, to focus on governance.

Speaking under the auspices of the South-South Chiefs, Elders, and Opinion Leaders Association of Nigeria, they stated that governance is suffering in Rivers because Fubara is being distracted by forces opposed to his success.

The National Chairman of the Association, Dr Omubo Harry, made these comments at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

Commenting on the crisis affecting the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Harry asserted that those who have left the party should not seek to destroy it but should leave it for others to manage.

He said, “The plight of good governance in Rivers State is a complex issue deeply rooted in ethnic politics and identity. Rivers State is a multi-ethnic society, and this pluralism poses a significant challenge to good governance.

“Ethnic loyalty and local affiliations often override state consciousness, leading to a decline and inconclusive governance.”

While noting that good governance is characterised by participatory democracy, human development, and accountability, he remarked that the situation in Rivers is different.

“In Rivers State, patron-clientism and money politics have hindered the achievement of good governance and have become dominant characteristics of Rivers State politics, where elected officials and government workers use their positions for personal gain, benefiting themselves, their supporters, and members of their ethnic group.

“To address this challenge in Rivers State, there is a need for a shift away from ethnic politics. We are advocating for good governance with discipline, and I am pleased that we have a leader with grassroots experience in governance.”

He commended Governor Fubara for his peaceful disposition despite numerous provocations, emphasising that the former governor served for eight years and that power is meant to rotate.

“I am referring to no other person than the current governor, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara. I respectfully urge the former administration to respect the rule of law. Power is meant to rotate,” Dr Harry said.

He noted that Fubara, a former civil servant who rose through the ranks, understands the plight of workers and is sensitive to the needs of the people. He added that Fubara should be given the opportunity to manage the state’s resources and implement his plans.

The association chairman stated, “Siminalayi Fubara has demonstrated competence from his time as a civil servant. Only a civil servant truly understands government. Not all politicians are the same. To be served, one must first serve, and Governor Fubara has done so as a civil servant.

“He understands the problems of the people and is addressing them. In just over a year, he has achieved a lot, including the Ring Road project, empowerment, and employment initiatives.”

He appealed to those who have left the PDP to allow the party to remain peaceful. He also asked those who have served their terms to give Fubara a chance to implement his ideas and deliver the benefits of good governance.

“It is God Almighty who brought Fubara to power, and no one can remove him. We cannot allow a few greedy individuals to disrupt democracy in our state or impose poverty for personal gain. We demand that the right thing be done. Mr Oga in Abuja, please allow Governor Fubara to work. As I said earlier, no one has a monopoly on wisdom except God, and what God has ordained should not be undone by man. We, the traditional rulers and well-meaning individuals present, say enough is enough. It is unjust to hinder progress when someone is trying to serve the people,” he said.

He added, “Development and peace are needed in this state. The Government House is not personal property. It is a matter of turn by turn. Currently, it is Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s turn, and he is a peace-loving individual dedicated to serving the people and fostering effective socio-economic development in Rivers State.”

He concluded, “Leadership involves credible execution of trust, and Governor Siminalayi Fubara has, in the past year and three months, governed effectively, promoting stability, economic growth, development, and human welfare. This is evident in his actions since becoming governor. He is working to reduce poverty, upgrade hospitals, improve roads, and promote empowerment.”

Other members of the association present at the event included HRM Dr E.J Olotu, HRH Rufus Abaridote, HRH Tamana Morris, National Woman Leader Amb. Catherine Oghide, and Chairman, Board of Trustees, Chief Maurice Ekpeyong, among others.

Gunmen invade Rivers community, kill two

0

Two natives of the Briun community in Bou-Ko kingdom in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State were shot dead following a night invasion by gunmen on Tuesday night.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at about 8 pm when many residents of the area were already indoors.

Many residents who heard the sound of the gunshot remained indoors while some fled the community upon the discovery that two people had been killed, even as they wondered about the aim of the assailants.

Speaking on the incident, a resident of the area and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Ken Saro-Wiwa Surveillance Group, Bright Nwiyorde, called for a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators face the law.

While calling for improved security in the area to prevent a recurrence of the dastardly act, Nwiyode called on the state government and relevant security agencies to come to the aid of the community and help fish out the killers.

He said, “In Bou-ko kingdom we heard that unknown gunmen shot two people in Briun community at night.

“We don’t know the people and that is why we are calling on the Government, the Commissioner of Police, the Khana local government chairman and the security at the local government level to come and investigate the matter and bring them to book.

“At the same time, myself as a security person I’m also doing my own investigation to help the government get to the root of the matter.”

When contacted, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said she was yet to receive a report of the incident but promised to find out from the Divisional Police Officer of the area and get back to our correspondent.

Iringe-Koko had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report on Thursday evening.

Focus on party primaries, LG elections, INEC urges CSOs

0

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has called on Civil Society Organisations to intensify their scrutiny of political party primaries and local government elections in Nigeria.

Addressing a coalition of CSOs led by Yinusa Ya’u at INEC’s headquarters on Wednesday, Yakubu emphasised the critical role of party primaries in shaping the quality of elected officials. He also highlighted the need for greater oversight of local government elections managed by State Independent Electoral Commissions.

While commending the contributions of civil society to the democratic process, Yakubu pointed out a gap in their engagement with local elections. He noted that while civil society has been instrumental in improving the quality of elections, local government elections, often dominated by SIECs, do not receive enough attention.

“No matter what INEC does, if other actors are not ready to play by the rules or in sync, we will continue to face challenges,” Yakubu stated.

He stressed that flawed party primaries negatively affect the entire electoral process, as citizens can only vote for the candidates presented by political parties.

Yakubu also encouraged CSOs to offer constructive criticism to help improve the electoral system. He urged for a comprehensive approach to election monitoring, focusing on all components of the process.

“Take the conduct of party primaries, for instance. Political parties conduct primaries, and INEC conducts the secondary elections. The most important process is the primaries conducted by political parties, as it is their candidates that we put on the ballot. Citizens can only choose from the candidates presented by political parties.”

He added: “Elections at the local government level are conducted by SIECs, and they declare all ruling party candidates as winners. Yet, we don’t hear anything from civil society.”

In response, Mr Yinusa Z. Ya’u, representing the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, affirmed the coalition’s commitment to democracy and electoral integrity. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to mobilise citizens for Permanent Voter Card collection and to promote peaceful elections in Edo State.

The Delta State Police Command has arrested six suspected kidnappers and recovered over N2.3 million in ransom paid by their victims.

The Commissioner of Police for Delta State, CP Abaniwanda Olufemi, stated this on Thursday while parading 16 suspects for various crimes.

Olufemi noted that the command, under his leadership, has achieved significant successes during the period under review, with plans to increase police visibility and raid black spots and criminal hideouts across the 25 local government areas.

He said, “Acting on credible intelligence, operatives from the Ebrumede Division, while on patrol, intercepted a tricycle carrying six passengers.

Olufemi also mentioned that the anti-kidnapping squad led a sting operation in the Umunede forest area, where two people kidnapped along the Asaba-Benin Expressway were rescued.

He added that the police acted on credible information regarding the kidnapping. When the kidnappers realised the police were closing in, they abandoned the victims and fled.

He said a search of the vehicle uncovered 320 packs of codeine, 125 sachets of tramadol, and other hard drugs in large quantities.
