PSP officials condemn members arrest over land dispute

0

Some officials of the Private Sector Partnership under the Lagos State Waste Management Authority have accused police officers at the Area M Command in Idimu of unlawfully arresting and detaining three of their members on Thursday in connection with a longstanding land dispute.

According to Metro gathered from one of the officials, who spoke for the aggrieved members, Suleiman Jamiu, that their members were being harassed and mistreated by suspected land grabbers who allegedly forced them off a property allocated to them by the state government.

Jamiu said, “We are officials of the PSP, and the land was allocated to us by the state government. We have all the necessary documentation. We had a structure where we parked our refuse collection trucks near Powerline. Suddenly, a hotel was built on the structure, and later, land grabbers arrived and forced us out.”

“We found out they were the ones who sold the land and forced us out. Now, we have nowhere to park except outside. We’ve been pleading with them for over 20 years. Before we could obtain a court injunction, they started building a fence to divide the land.

“We filed a petition with the police when the injunction was issued, but nothing came out of it. Four days ago, they arrested two of our men, claiming we were obstructing traffic.

“They forced us to sign an undertaking to remove all the trucks within 24 hours, which we complied with, except for one truck that had an engine problem. They invited us today (Thursday) to give a statement, which we did, but then they detained our men and said they had a plan to charge them in court.”

When our correspondent reached out to the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Thursday, he explained that the officers were responding to a complaint from the local council, which alleged that the operators’ activities in the area were causing obstruction and pollution.

He said, “It is not about land-grabbing. The local government area wrote to the police complaining of how the operators were obstructing traffic and leaving waste in their vehicles, thereby causing air pollution for residents around.

“The operators were approached but they remained adamant. The police had to step in.”

TASUED graduates kick over hike in alumni membership fee

0

Concerned graduates of the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State have dragged the leadership of the institution’s alumni to the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, demanding an explanation on how funds contributed by members were utilised.

The petition follows a protest by the graduates over the hike in the membership fee paid to the association.

A copy of the petition obtained by According to Metro on Thursday urged Abiodun to prevail on the executive to explain how funds generated by the association in the last five years were expended.

The letter also demanded an immediate reversal of the alumni fee which was pegged at N20,000 a 400 per cent increase from the previous N5,000.

According to Metro reported on Tuesday that the ex-students expressed displeasure at the increase in the alumni membership fee from N5,000 to N20,000.

They described the increase as arbitrary and insensitive to the country’s economic situation.

The alumni claimed that the fee provided no benefits and was merely a way to extort them, many of whom were unaware of the association’s activities.

In the recent petition, the ex-students claimed that though some visible projects were carried out by the executive, there was no justification for the increase.

The petition read, “We are writing to urgently address the growing concerns among Tai Solarin University of Education Alumni regarding the financial practices of the alumni association, particularly in light of the recent and unexplained increase in the alumni fee.

“We understand that the alumni association has stated that the funds collected are being used to assist the university and government in building lecture halls and hostels. While we appreciate any efforts to support the institution, we must question whether it is the responsibility of the alumni to undertake these projects, which are typically the obligations of the university and government.

“Alumni contributions should be voluntary and should not come at the cost of making life unbearable for alumni members and graduating students through exorbitant fees.”

The petition which was jointly signed by concerned graduates also gave a three-day ultimatum to the executive to explain the funds generated by the association.

“In the interest of transparency and accountability, we formally request that an audited financial report covering the past five years be provided to the public within 72 hours which starts from the date of this letter.

“This report should detail the income, expenditures, and overall management of the alumni funds during these periods.

Additionally, we demand that the N20,000 increased alumni fee be immediately removed from the payment portal.

“This fee is unreasonable and has caused significant distress among alumni members. It must be withdrawn as part of the immediate steps to address our concerns.”

Meanwhile, the association’s Public Relations Officer, Ademolu Adenuga, disclosed in a telephone conversation on Monday that an official response would be made public soon.

“I am currently in Osogbo. When I return, I will officially address their concerns,” Adenuga said.

0

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has ordered the detention of members of a patrol team that allegedly killed a 24-year-old man along the Onitsha-Owerri Road in the state.

It was gathered that the victim, simply identified as Ebuka, was killed after he was shot by a group of policemen while moving along the Onitsha-Owerri Road on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses around the scene said the deceased was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment where he was later confirmed dead due to the gunshot wounds he sustained.

The sources said, “The police officers who shot the boy immediately ran into their vehicle and quickly left the scene. The deceased’s body has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.”

Also reacting to the development, an X.com user, Harrison Gwamnishu, who claimed to be privy to the incident, said the deceased was shot by the police on Wednesday while moving on the highway.

Gwamnishu added that the police officers who committed the murder immediately went into hiding to evade justice. He shared pictures and videos of the incident on his X page.

He wrote, “(A) 24-year-old Ebuka was allegedly shot and killed today by some police officers along Onitsha/Owerri road.

“The officers involved are currently in a hideout. Ebuka was rushed to the hospital and confirmed dead. His body has been deposited at the mortuary.”

He called on the office of the Inspector General of Police and the police authorities to respond to the development and ensure the officers were brought to justice.

Reacting, the spokesman for the Nigeria Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi, described the incident as sad, promising that the force would intensify efforts to ensure the culprits were punished.

Adejobi said, “This is sad. The Force Headquarters has ordered the CPs in Anambra and Imo to fish out the men and carry out a thorough investigation into the matter.

“The FHQ will not in any way condone this kind of act. This will be looked into, and we will compel the command whose AOR this occurred to update us all. May his soul rest in peace, while justice must be done.”

Also reacting to the incident in a press statement late on Wednesday, the Anambra State Police Command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the police officers in the patrol team had been detained.

Ikenga added that the CP ordered their detention and a preliminary investigation fingered a corporal among the patrol team, as the one who committed the act.

He said the CP’s directive followed an ongoing investigation into the murder of the victim.

He said, “CP Itam orders the detention of police patrol team members over the murder of an unsuspecting member of the public along the Onitsha-Owerri Road, Onitsha.

“A preliminary investigation indicates among the patrol team, a police corporal is the suspect in the act.

“The CP directs an immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, sues for calm and assures that the command will ensure a thorough investigation into the case for justice to prevail.

“Further development shall be communicated.”

Recall that on October 13, 2023, a 29-year-old, Chibueze Nwakor, father of three children, who hailed from Owerre-Ezukala, in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, was reportedly shot dead near Sokoto Road, Main Market in Onitsha, allegedly by policemen attached to the Onitsha Area Command.

The deceased, who was said to be on his way to the market to purchase a food item, was shot by the security officers for his inability to help them locate the direction in which they were heading on the said date.

After shooting him, the policemen were said to have jumped into their ash-coloured commuter Hiace shuttle bus and zoomed off.

The mother of the victim, Stella Nwakor, petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, but to date, nothing has been heard about it.

In recent times, residents, motorists and commuters have lamented that the Onitsha-Owerri Road had become notorious for several police checkpoints used to carry out incessant harassment and extortion. They alleged that the level of extortions by the security operatives at the roadblocks had become unbearable for the road users.

In June, one Kingsley Ebuka narrated to journalists how he was detained and almost lost his life when he initially refused to be extorted by the security operatives.

Hyena kills five-year-old in Kenya

0

A five-year-old child has been mauled to death by a hyena in Kenya, the East African country’s wildlife service said Thursday, promising that it was tackling the “rising hyena attacks”.

“Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) deeply regret the tragic loss of a 5-year-old child caused by a hyena attack,” it said.

The KWS said the attack occurred on Wednesday evening in Juja, Kiambu County, around 35 kilometres (21 miles) from the capital Nairobi.

The service said it was “intensifying efforts to mitigate human-wildlife conflict in the area” and had launched an operation to “address the hyena threat”.

Since August 8, “following a similar incident in Juja”, the KWS said it had captured and relocated around 38 hyenas.

Local media said a 10-year-old child was also killed by a hyena in the area earlier in the year.

Reports of wildlife straying into human habitats in Kenya have increased in recent years as the animals come under growing pressure from cities expanding into ancient migration and hunting grounds.

In December 2021, hyenas killed two people in 24 hours in a village just 50 kilometres (31 miles) east of Nairobi.

Police call for caution as mob kills couple in Imo

0

The Imo State Police Command has warned the public against taking the law into their hands in expressing their grievances following the death of a couple by mob action in Orogwe in the Owerri West Local Government Area of the state on Monday.

Speaking to According to Metro, on Thursday, the Public Relations Officer of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, said the course of justice would not be served if the public persisted in taking the law into their hands while urging them to allow the police to do their job of law enforcement..

“Allow the police to do their work. Any suspect should be handed over to the police for proper investigations. The police have deployed their team for investigations to apprehend the perpetrators.”

Our correspondent gathered on Thursday that some angry youths on Monday burnt to death a yet-to-be-identified couple in the Orogwe-Ohii area of Owerri-West LGA.

A community source who pleaded anonymity told According to Metro that the couple usually operated around the community and neighbouring villages.

“The couple was caught on Monday while absconding with a stolen motorcycle after robbing a motorcyclist of his bike with a pistol.

“The couple was well known in the community but no one knew they were involved in motorcycle snatching until they were caught.”

He hinted that many people had lost their motorcycles along the road and people were already on alert waiting for the day “the criminals would be caught.”

“They were caught while trying to dispossess a man of his motorcycle along the Orogwe/Ohii Road. Because the youths and community vigilantes were already enraged by the ugly trend, they refused to hand them to the police.

“But what I don’t know is if the couple are from the community. It was terrible.”

Our correspondent gathered that many youths have deserted the area for fear of being arrested by the police during the investigation.

Borno residents dump cars for horses, trekking over high fuel price

0

Following the nationwide increase in the price of petrol on Tuesday, more residents and workers including civil servants in Borno State have abandoned their vehicles to embrace trekking, horse riding and the use of bicycles and tricycles for mobility.

During a tour of Maiduguri, the state capital in the early hours of Thursday, According to Metro observed less vehicles on the road and more pedestrians including horse and bicycle riders on major roads.

One of the pedestrians, Dadoon Pam, who is a graphic designer, told our correspondent that the cost of mobility had increased significantly as tricycle riders now refer to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s increase in petroleum products price, making commuters pay almost double the amount before.

He said, “This fuel price hike has affected me terribly because as a graphic designer, I need electricity to make my design. Now that we depend solely on fuel to work, this increase means I now have to charge my clients more. Though it will be bad for business, I don’t have any option as we speak.”

An enumerator with a Non-Governmental Organisation, The Big Smile Foundation in Maiduguri, Jeremiah Blessing, who narrated her experience, said she had adjusted to breaking her morning movement by trekking halfway before boarding a tricycle.

She says, “What I do now is to break my movement, trek to a point, then take Keke from there. Since the hike in fuel prices, it has not been easy because I go to work late almost every day. Sometimes, I stand up to 10 to 30 minutes before seeing a tricycle going towards my direction  because many riders have packed their tricycle due to the price increase.”

Another resident who is a retired Customs officer, Tuja Mai Abba, said ever since the price increase, he had abandoned his vehicle for commercial tricycles while noting that it saved cost, especially for a few kilometre movements.

According to him, “The government is confusing us about this issue of fuel subsidy and availability. You hear one story today and another story tomorrow. It is seriously affecting me, I have abandoned my car for a while now.”

On his part, a member of an NGO, Daniel Omolara, said, “Since I brought my car down to Maiduguri, I have never for one day left it at home to go to work. But today, if I try to drive that car out, I may push it back home. There is no money to buy fuel at that rate. Honestly, N5,000 fuel can no longer take me a day. Where will I be getting such money from?”

Similarly, a private school teacher in D’littles International Maiduguri, Micheal Johnson, told our correspondent that he had embraced trekking and tricycles because the riders had increased fare prices almost double the amount before the price increased.

“My school is not too far, I went there today on my own foot. Although we haven’t resumed, if it persists after resumption, I will learn to wake up earlier,”  he said.

According to Metro recalls that the pump price was, on Tuesday, increased to N855 per litre, with the prices varying across locations, at the NNPC stations in the country.

APC’s chances of victory growing stronger, says ex-speaker

0

A former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Frank Okiye, has stated that the chances of the All Progressives Congress winning the September 21 governorship election are improving daily.

In an exclusive interview with our correspondent, Okiye, a chieftain of the APC, claimed that Esanland, the region where both the APC candidate, Monday Okpebholo, and the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate hail from, is favourable to the APC.

He said, “The chances of the APC winning this governorship election are getting brighter. I know that the PDP and its candidate are surprised by the turn of events because, before we started campaigning, they believed they had it all sewn up.

“Many people are now defecting from the PDP to the APC because they know that Ighodalo is a protégé of Governor Godwin Obaseki and may not perform any better if elected as governor.

“Ighodalo seems to be criticising the governor of the Aghenebode campaign by claiming he will build schools, improve healthcare, provide electricity, and eradicate poverty.

“He heads the laboratory known as Alaghodaro, which is generating economic policies for the government.
“Under normal circumstances, a sitting government would campaign based on the projects it has accomplished, which they have not.

“What they focus on is the candidate of another party, who they say does not speak Queen’s English, rather than addressing substantive issues. Who says speaking Queen’s English makes one a better administrator?

“Our candidate is a self-made man who developed himself in the private sector, so the language he uses to communicate is irrelevant. We have moved beyond that and are looking ahead.

“We are considering a candidate’s passion for development, not someone who will exploit the people. They claim the school of fisheries will commence. How do they plan to achieve this? From which budget? The current government’s tenure is just a little over two months.

“The battleground is Esan, and we are performing well in that area, which is also my home,” he added.
