Edo people deserve leaders who will prioritise their well-being over politics – APC chieftain, Olele

APC counters Ekpo critics, highlights minister's achievements

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Edo, Julius Olele, popularly known as Jojo,  talks about Saturday’s governorship election and the plans of the party’s candidate to transform Edo if he wins, in this interview with ’TANA AIYEJINA

The Edo governorship election is just three days away, what is the mood ahead of the election?

There is a sense of eagerness and preparedness before the Edo governorship race. People are keen to engage in the democratic process and have their voices heard. Voters are thinking about our wonderful state’s future with a sense of duty and excitement that is apparent. People are talking about the main concerns that are important to them, which include healthcare, education, and the economy. Together with my team, we are prepared to ensure a fair, transparent, and peaceful election while concentrating on bringing about the reform and advancement that Edo so richly deserves.

The campaigns have been more of attacks on the opponents by the leading parties rather than issue-based. Doesn’t this worry you?

Yes, it is concerning that the campaigns are geared more toward personal attacks rather than being issue-based. Our democracy thrives when ideas and policies are at the forefront of political discussions, not character assaults. However, I remain focused on the real issues affecting the people of Edo State—such as job creation, infrastructure development, healthcare, and education. It is vital that we elevate the conversation and address the pressing challenges facing our state. The people of Edo deserve leaders who will prioritise their well-being over political bickering, and that is exactly what I am committed to. This election should not be a do or die affair, regardless the parties in which we belong , we are all from Edo State meaning we are one  so for me no one’s political ambition is worth the blood of any citizen of edo state.

As an APC stalwart in the state, what do you think your party candidate Monday Okpebholo has to offer that the other candidates don’t?

Okpebholo has a rare combination of honesty, demonstrated leadership, and a thorough understanding of Edo State’s difficulties. His experience as a grassroots leader, dedication to job development, and emphasis on strengthening local communities distinguish him from the other candidates. He is not making empty promises; he has a track record of delivering outcomes, particularly in infrastructure development, youth empowerment, and economic revitalisation. Unlike others, he recognises that long-term success requires inclusive governance, in which every Edo citizen, from rural to urban, has a voice. His ambition is to create an Edo State that is affluent, safe, and prepared for the future, and that is the leadership we require right now.

So, if Okpebholo wins, what should Edo expect in terms of education, health, infrastructure agriculture and youth engagement?

If Okpebholo wins, Edo State can expect transformational leadership across critical sectors. In education there will be a renewed focus on quality and accessibility. Okpebholo is committed to investing in teacher training, upgrading school infrastructure, and integrating modern technology to prepare our students for the future. Vocational training centres will also be established to equip youths with practical skills for the workforce. Okpebholo plans to improve access to quality healthcare services by building more primary health centres, equipping hospitals, and ensuring adequate staffing across the state. The focus will be on preventive healthcare, maternal health, and ensuring that no Edo citizen is left behind. Okpebholo also has a clear plan for infrastructure development – roads, bridges, and critical infrastructure that support commerce and connectivity will be prioritised. His administration will make sure rural areas are not neglected, enhancing the movement of goods and people, and promoting economic growth across the state. I believe under his leadership, Edo will experience an agricultural revolution. There will be investment in mechanised farming, access to low-interest loans for farmers, and the establishment of agro-processing zones to create jobs and boost food security. This will ensure that Edo becomes a hub for agricultural production and export. Okpebholo’s focus on youth is one of the cornerstones of his campaign. He plans to create platforms for youth entrepreneurship, offer more vocational training, and ensure youth involvement in governance. His administration will work to ensure that young people are empowered to become leaders and contributors to the economic and political growth of the state. So, Edo can expect a government that is focused on progress, inclusivity, and real solutions for the challenges we face. A man who was born into a poor background knows what hunger is and our candidate is someone who knows more about agriculture and Edo State has  one of the fertile lands in Nigeria.

How would you assess Governor Godwin Obaseki’s eight years in charge?

Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration has made efforts in some areas, like in education through the EdoBEST programme, which improved the learning outcomes in primary schools. However, after eight years, there are still many critical areas that have not seen the level of progress Edo citizens hoped for. In terms of roads and infrastructure, the progress has been uneven. While we have seen some major roads in urban areas improved, many rural areas remain neglected, with critical infrastructure like roads and bridges in poor condition. This has hindered not only local economic growth but also the movement of goods and services, especially for our farmers and traders. Rural communities have struggled with impassable roads, making access to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities a challenge. Beyond roads, the state’s infrastructure development in sectors like electricity, water supply, and public facilities has not been as transformative as it should be. These are essential for economic development, and Edo still faces gaps that must be addressed if we are to attract more investments and ensure that the benefits of growth are felt across all parts of the state. Most concerning is the disconnection between the youth and the government, with many young people still feeling marginalised in decision-making processes and struggling with unemployment. While we recognise the attempts made under Obaseki’s leadership, Edo needs a new vision—one that builds on what has been done but also addresses the gaps in governance. We need leadership that is more inclusive, more engaged with the people, and more focused on delivering tangible results in every sector. For someone like Governor Godwin obaseki, who is well educated, I think he should have done far better knowing fully well the benefits of being educated. Most people who are making impact in the world today were trained by the poor parents who did not know the four walls of school, but they knew that by giving them the best education they will do well in life but that was not the case of a governor that even knows the value of education, so, we must think well and think right.

Okpebholo says if he wins, he’ll continue from where ex-Gov Adams Oshiomhole and not where Obaseki stopped. Don’t you think governance should be a continuum?

Governance should absolutely be a continuum, with each administration building on the successes of its predecessors. However, it’s also essential that we critically assess where past policies have worked and where adjustments are needed to ensure progress. When Okpebholo says he will continue from where ex-Governor Adams Oshiomhole stopped, he is referring to a focus on the policies and programmes that had a tangible, positive impact on Edo State during Oshiomhole’s tenure—particularly in areas like infrastructure development, road construction, and youth empowerment. Oshiomhole’s administration prioritised the development of critical infrastructure across both rural and urban areas, and Okpebholo intends to reignite that momentum, ensuring that infrastructure projects are not only continued but expanded to benefit all Edo citizens. He believes that the emphasis on accountability, job creation, and robust economic growth during Oshiomhole’s tenure laid a strong foundation for development, and that revisiting those priorities will fast-track Edo’s progress. That said, Okpebholo is fully aware that governance is about moving the state forward, not backward. His vision is to build on the successes of the past while correcting any shortcomings, to ensure that Edo thrives. He will certainly continue policies that have worked under Obaseki, but his commitment is to refocus on what he believes are the core priorities for the state’s development—infrastructure, agriculture, youth engagement, and rural development. Let me talk about the state capital Benin City and not the rural areas. In Benin, there are no good roads, no drainage system after eight years; it’s sad. If Okpebholo  is saying he will continue from where ex-governor Adams Oshiomhole stopped, I personally do not see anything wrong with that, this is not political but fact. So, hopefully, Senator Okpebholo is coming to unlock Edo’s full potential.

The PDP has refused to sign the Peace Accord ahead of the poll. What do you think this portends for the election?

The refusal of the PDP to sign the Peace Accord raises concerns about the potential for heightened tension during the election. Peace accords are vital to ensuring a peaceful and fair electoral process, as they commit parties to avoid violence, inflammatory rhetoric, and intimidation. This decision could send a message that there may be underlying concerns about the fairness of the process or intentions to challenge results in ways that could disrupt peace. It may also signal a reluctance to engage in the spirit of collaboration that these accords promote. While the accord itself is not legally binding, it is a strong symbol of each party’s commitment to upholding democratic values and ensuring that the election remains issue-based and non-violent. As the first citizen of the state, what message is he sending to  others, is that the reason he mentioned few days ago that this election is a do-or-die affair?  The Federal Government should please look into it to ensure there is peace by all means .

What’s your reaction to PDP’s allegation that their members are being arrested by the police and taken to Abuja ?

This still goes down to the issues of violence in the state, the police cannot just go all out and start arresting people if there was no report of violence.  There are evidence where some of the PDP members attacked the APC members with all kinds of objects, which almost took their lives and it was not just one attack. I think if proper action was not taken by now, Edo State would have turned to a war zone. People go to the Supreme Court when they do not have a fair judgment, so if PDP members are attacking the opposite parties in a PDP state, do you think there will be fair justice?

Corruption is a common problem in governance. What steps do you think should be taken to promote transparency and accountability if APC wins the election?

One of the most effective ways to fight corruption is by empowering anti-corruption institutions, such as the Edo State Public Procurement Agency and the Anti-Corruption Commissions. These institutions should be independent, well-funded, and given the authority to investigate and prosecute corrupt practices without political interference. Implementing an open governance policy would promote transparency in government dealings. This includes making government contracts, budgets, and expenditures publicly accessible. Digital platforms could be used to allow citizens to track how public funds are allocated and spent, ensuring transparency. Introducing e-governance systems for public services can significantly reduce the opportunity for corruption. By digitising government services such as tax collection, business registrations, and land administration, there would be less room for bureaucratic bottlenecks and under-the-table dealings. Establishing strong whistleblower protections will encourage individuals to report corrupt practices without fear of reprisal. This ensures that citizens, civil servants, and other stakeholders can expose corruption when they encounter it. Regular and detailed public audits of government projects, particularly infrastructure and public service programmes, should be conducted and made available to the public. Citizens should be able to monitor government projects from inception to completion. The State House of Assembly must be empowered to exercise proper oversight over the executive branch. This includes regular reviews of budgets, audits, and procurement processes to ensure that public funds are used responsibly. Leadership by example is critical. Okpebholo and the APC must demonstrate a zero-tolerance policy for corruption, starting from the top. By ensuring that all political appointees and public servants are held to high ethical standards, it sets a precedent for integrity in governance. Educating the public on their rights and the importance of demanding accountability from their leaders is vital. Encouraging citizens to participate in governance, report corrupt practices, and hold their leaders accountable will create a culture of transparency. Lastly, if a corrupt governor is bring in a successor then the corruption continues but when the present governor knows that the other parties can succeed him, I think they will be cautious in terms of corruption.

Does the party has any plan to leverage your relationship with the APC-led Federal Government to attract more federal projects and investments to Edo State if your candidate wins?

If Okpebholo wins, one of the key strategies will be to leverage our strong relationship with the APC-led Federal Government to secure more federal projects and investments for Edo State. Our party’s alignment with the federal administration offers several opportunities. We will actively seek partnerships with federal ministries and agencies to co-develop projects that address critical infrastructure needs, such as roads, bridges, and healthcare facilities. By aligning state priorities with federal objectives, we can access funding and support for projects that benefit our citizens. We will work to ensure that Edo State benefits from federal grants and programmes aimed at development and poverty alleviation. This includes applying for federal funds dedicated to education, agriculture, and urban development. We will advocate for Edo’s inclusion in federal infrastructure programmes, ensuring that our state receives a fair share of investment in critical areas like transportation and energy, which are essential for economic growth. By maintaining strong ties with the FG, we will be in a better position to attract federal-backed investments and initiatives that stimulate economic activity, create jobs, and foster local businesses. In summary, our goal will be to harness this relationship to secure federal support and resources, ensuring that Edo not only benefits from national development initiatives but also stands out as a key player in the region’s growth and prosperity.

You’d endorse misery by voting APC, Atiku warns Edo voters

Atiku hails Supreme Court judgment on LG autonomy

As the Edo State governorship election draws near, a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said voting for All Progressives Congress in the state would be an endorsement of misery and hardship.

He urged the voters to ask themselves if the APC has made life better, or only deepened their struggles before casting the ballot.

He also said the APC has plunged Nigeria into an abyss of suffering and has sown seeds of poverty, despair, and insecurity.

Atiku made this known in a statement on his Facebook on Wednesday titled ‘The clear choice for a prosperous Edo State’.

”They criticized past leaders for raising fuel prices, yet today, they preside over an era where fuel costs soar above N900 per litre. Their cruelty and disregard for the plight of the masses are unmatched. A vote for the APC is a vote for the continuation of misery, hunger, and despair,” Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate during the 2023 general elections, said.

“Do not be swayed by the empty promises of the APC. Electing Dr. Asue Ighodalo of the PDP is not just a vote; it is an act of reclaiming our future. It is a choice to consolidate the good work of Governor Godwin Obaseki and to build a future of prosperity, dignity, and hope,” he added.

According to him, the power to break free from the chains of bad governance, and the power to chart a new course for Edo lies in the residents’ which must be used as a tool for change.

Atiku said, ”The APC has donned the mask of a friend to the masses, but behind this veil lies a sinister reality. They have lured gullible voters with sweet promises, only to reveal their true nature— a party driven by a hunger for power rather than the well-being of the people.

”They have forsaken the ideals of governance, ignoring the cries of the common man while pursuing their selfish ambitions. Under their watch, Nigeria has been plunged into an abyss of suffering. They have sown seeds of poverty, despair, and insecurity.

”The once vibrant spirit of our nation has been dimmed by a relentless struggle for survival, where even the simplest of needs, like food, have become out of reach for millions. In this grim reality, our people are not dying of disease but of hunger. We stand at the lowest point in our nation’s governance.

”The APC has not served the people; they have served themselves. And when the people, rightfully aggrieved, have raised their voices in protest, they have been silenced, dragged to courts under charges of treason. Meanwhile, the APC’s leaders bask in luxury, indifferent to the hardship that grips the nation.”

The former vice president said despite the gloomy situation, the PDP candidate was ready to serve with competence and a genuine commitment to the people’s welfare.

”People of Edo State, the time has come to use the power vested in you. As you go to the polls, ask yourself: Has the APC made your life better, or has it only deepened your struggles?

”The answer is clear. Your vote for Ighodalo will not only bring change to Edo State but will also send a resounding message across Nigeria that we reject the deceit and self-serving ways of the APC.

”Let us march to the polls this Saturday, united in our resolve to bring about the change we so desperately need. Let us cast our votes for Asue Ighodalo and usher in a new dawn for Edo State. The power is yours. Use it wisely,” Atiku said.

Fake Rivers job syndicate smashed, 16 victims rescued

Police hunt abductors of Rivers pastor, three others during service

The Rivers State Police Command said its men smashed a fake job syndicate and rescued 16 persons, including 13 females who lost various sums of money to the gang in Igwuruta in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.

The police said the suspect and his accomplice posed as a company worker and potential employer to scam unsuspecting job seekers, saying the fraudsters had already disposed their victims of huge sums ranging from N650,000 to N850,000.00 each for a non-existent job in an oil and gas firm.

The state Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, disclosed this at a news briefing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

Disu said the syndicate was busted when operatives responded to a distress call by concerned residents who suspected hostage-taking.

The CP stated, “On August 29, 2024, at about 3 pm, operatives of the Rivers State Police Command attached to the Octopus Strike Force, acting on a credible piece of information about a possible hostage situation in a compound at Igwuruta.

“The operatives swung into action and arrested a suspect, Chukwudi Okoli (m), who posed as a staff member of a company, Qjoseansel International Global Limited.

“During the operation, Amiye Joseph and 15 other victims comprising 13 males and two were rescued and led to the station.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the unsuspecting victims had each paid monetary sums ranging from N650,000 to N850,000 each to the phoney company with vain assurance that they would be given jobs within the oil/gas sector and receive payment in US dollars.

“The fraudsters operated in such a way that they would call their unsuspecting victims over the phone after a random selection of phone numbers. They would then introduce them to job opportunities and invite them to Port Harcourt where they would undergo fake interview processes.”

He said the victims were then extorted huge sums of money and held in a facility where they would be keenly monitored. After this was achieved, he revealed that the victims would be subjected to training where they would be taught to convince potential victims about the job opportunities with a pay of $450 per week.

“New entrants were tasked to pay $25 to facilitate a registration process. The suspects designed an online platform that generated a username and password for registrants upon completion of registration.

“Throughout the process, the victims are instructed to alienate themselves from other people. Sophisticated gadgets and items were recovered from the operational office of the suspect including phones, laptops, television sets, generators, industrial fans and office furniture,” he said.

Disu said the suspect and the exhibits were in police custody while the investigation was going on.

In a related development, the police said they had arrested a suspect who allegedly abducted a child in Enugu State and ferried it to Port Harcourt for trafficking, but said the victim was rescued.

The state police boss said, “On September 13, 2024, at about 10 am, operatives of the command attached to the Abuloma Police Station, Port Harcourt received credible and actionable intelligence, indicating suspicious movement of a man with a little girl.

“Consequent upon the receipt of this piece of information, operatives were swiftly dispatched to the area and arrested a suspect, one Prince Ogbonda, aged 24 and a native of Elekahia Community in Port Harcourt, but a resident of Akwuke area, Enugu.

“A teenager (name withheld), aged 16 years, a resident of the Garki area, Enugu State was found being held against her will by the suspect.

“During preliminary investigations, it was revealed that the suspect lured the victim out of the Garki area in Enugu, put her in a Ghana-Must-Go-bag and brought her from Enugu to Port Harcourt.

“On arrival in Port Harcourt, the victim was taken to the house of one Chima (surname unknown), an Internet fraudster operating in the Ozuoboko community. Chima and one other yet-to-be-identified suspect had non-consensual carnal knowledge of the victim repeatedly.”

Disu said the victim had been presented for medical examination and treatment while the suspect was currently in police custody, adding that, “Investigation is ongoing, while concerted efforts are intensified to apprehend other fleeing suspects.”

Police arrest 186 suspected kidnappers with over 4000 ammunition

The Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday said policemen deployed across the country had arrested over 2,398 suspects in recent months.

A breakdown of this showed that 259 were arrested for armed robbery, 186 suspected kidnappers, and 1,575 individuals committed various other crimes.

The Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi disclosed this while parading suspects recently arrested by personnel of the Intelligence Response Team.

He said, “Over the last month, the Nigeria Police Force has made remarkable achievements in the fight against crime and criminality, including violent crimes, recording the arrest of 295 armed robbery suspects, 186 kidnappers, 271 murder/homicide suspects, and 71 suspects for the unlawful possession of firearms.

“The Force also arrested 199 suspects for sexual-related offences, 143 suspects arrested for cultism, and 1,575 suspects arrested for other various crimes. The total number of firearms recovered stands at 185, with a total number of 4087 ammunition of various calibres recovered, 111 vehicles recovered and 129 rescued kidnapped victims.”

He also said an Abuja-based Disc Jockey, Raymond Terver, popularly known as DJ Ice, had been arrested by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team for allegedly purchasing expensive drinks and other goods using fake alerts.

According to him, the suspect sold the drinks and other goods through intermediaries to conceal his identity.

Adejobi said DJ Ice ran out of luck after he purchased drinks from a hotel in August using a fake alert.

Adejobi added that the suspect who started the crime in June 2024 made over N8m from the crime, which he used to purchase DJ equipment.

Adejobi said, “The suspect was arrested in August 2024 for purchasing goods using fake payment alerts. He admitted to starting this scheme in June 2024, ordering expensive drinks, particularly Hennessy XO, from the ‘For You’ Hotel and Restaurant in Jabi, Abuja.

“He would send fake payment receipts via WhatsApp, arrange for a dispatch rider to collect the drinks, and then send them through intermediaries to conceal his identity. Terver revealed he generated the fake alerts using the Pint app on his computer.

‘The restaurant noticed discrepancies in their inventory and reported the issue to the IRT, which led to his arrest. After thorough investigation, he has confessed to making over N8m from this fraud, which he used to buy DJ equipment.”

Addressing journalists, DJ Ice said he took to crime because of the hardship in the country.

He said, “The reason I decided to go this line is because of hardship.

I was eager to make money and get DJ equipment for myself. I have been in my line of business for up to 15 years. And all this while, I have been looking for ways to get money, to get equipment.

I bought them for about N5m. I had not started using the equipment before I was arrested. I bought it in August.

I feel very sorry for myself.“

Narrating how he perpetrated the crime, he said, “I went through Google, and I found this restaurant, and I chatted them up, and then if they had so-so-so goods, liquor in particular, they said yes, and then I clicked another, fabricated a receipt to my computer on the Pint app, and then sent it to them, a confirmed payment, and sent them, asked if I would come over to pick it up, it would be delivered.

“I said okay, I would send a dispatch rider to get it, and they said okay. I sent the dispatch rider. They gave him the goods, and that is how I did it.“

Also paraded was a suspect accused of killing a police officer in Ogun State, Kayode Johnson, also known as Baddoo.

Adejobi said the suspect was arrested on June 12, 2024.

He said, “The suspect confessed to being the gang leader to a band of armed robbers who operated in the Ikorodu /Ijebu-Ode area. He stated that they made away with the policeman’s AK47  rifle after killing him. The said AK47 rifle was later recovered from one of the gang members by the Lagos State Police Command.

Upon his arrest, two locally made pistols, four live cartridges and one cutter were recovered.”

How Ihejirika’s death sentence was overturned in Indonesia – Lawyer

NIDCOM commends Optiva Capital on national development

The United States-based foremost Nigerian international lawyer, Emmanuel Ogebe, has revealed that the process of freeing a compatriot, Emmanuel Ihejirika, on death row for drug charges in Indonesia began in 2019.

Ogebe said Ihejirika approached him when he visited Indonesia five years ago to contact the Nigerian Embassy on his behalf and other Nigerian prisoners in a desperate situation at the time.

The lawyer made this known in a statement made available to our correspondent on Monday in reaction to the goodwill messages from Nigerians at home and abroad for his recent legal feat.

Recall that Nigerians received the news of Ihejirika’s freedom from the Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, on Saturday.

Reacting to the message in the statement for the first time, Ogebe said the Nigerian was “erroneously” sentenced by the Indonesian Supreme Court “as Emmanuel Ihejirika after 20 years imprisoned in Indonesia.”

He stated that he took the case up following his visit to the Asian country in 2019 adding that there were other Nigerian prisoners in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, even as he called on the Federal Government to send a diplomatic delegate to negotiate their freedom at the time.

Ogebe, who also disclosed that it had been 27 years since he escaped the brutal junta of the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, to the US, said the experience turned into a blessing for him.

“Today marks 27 years since I arrived in exile in the U.S. during a marathon escape from the murderous Gen. Abacha regime and thus became part of the Diaspora on the longest day of my life – 31 hours,” he said.

“That singular event enabled me to become Nigeria’s foremost human rights lawyer in the Diaspora leading to the eventual unprecedented overturning of “Ihejirika’s” death sentence by the Indonesian Supreme Court on drug charges, the relocation of over 25 at-risk Nigerians to the U.S. and millions of dollars in aid to Africa over the last 24 years – including N600m to Plateau State last year.

“I return all glory to God for the fulfilment of Genesis 50:20 in my life: ‘What the enemy meant for evil, God turned around for good for the saving of many lives.’ This is my life verse.

“Accordingly, I have written to the NIDCOM CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, providing a list of other Nigerian citizens we found in an Indonesian prison during client visitation.”

He, however, stated that Ihejirika became a prisoner in Indonesia after “he was unfortunately trafficked by drug cartels on a fake passport” while his asylum appeal had not been granted by the United Nations.

The activist lawyer also said his client’s singular asylum application was critical in establishing his true identity and alibi as well as the fact that he was not a serial drug trafficker as alleged.

He, then, added, “While we work on his recovery and rehabilitation, we ask for the privacy of the media for him at this time.”

According to the international constitutional lawyer, a letter was written to Dabiri-Erewa about other Nigerians languishing in the Indonesian prison system.

He said, “This list is old and was compiled by one of our Australian caregiver volunteers who visited them. Apart from my client number one on the list who I repatriated home on Christmas Eve from Jarkarta, I am unaware of the status of the others. I hope you can exercise your good offices to ascertain their status.

“Following our unprecedented victory at the Indonesian Supreme Court and recent developments in that country’s laws, I believe there is hope for the recovery of the lives of more of our misguided citizens in this tragic predicament,” the statement revealed.

“I would urge that a visitation delegation be conducted to Indonesia for this purpose as countries with high-level diplomatic engagements and on-the ground presence tend to achieve breakthroughs more so with a new government elected in Indonesia.”

Ogebe stated in the letter written to the NiDOCM boss, that, “There are 19 Nigerians in this prison and two are very sick. Now, prisoners are only allowed outside of their cell for five to 15 minutes a day confirming the information I sent you on February 15.”

“Your citizens entrusted me with the task of delivering their cry for help to you. When it comes to human lives, I am compelled to leave no stone unturned. I will be very grateful if your office could acknowledge receipt of my email and update me on the progress,” he added.

New CP assumes office in Lagos

Commissioner of Police Ishola Olanrewaju Olawale has assumed duty as the 40th Commissioner of Police at the Lagos State Command.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday, noted that Olawale took over from CP Adegoke Fayoade, who had been promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police and had since been redeployed as the AIG Zone 2 Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos.

Hundeyin stated that Olawale joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1992.

“He holds a BSc in Geography and an MSc in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Ibadan. Amongst other training and educational pursuits, he has attended the Tactical Leadership and Command Course, at the Police Staff College Jos, and the Strategic Leadership and Command Course, at the National Institute of Police Studies, Abuja.

“He has served in numerous key operational and administrative positions, where he ensured law and order in some of the most challenging environments. His experience in Lagos spans decades, during which he successfully handled high-stakes situations such as the OPC Idi Araba and Abule Egba crises, establishing himself as a tactical leader with a deep understanding of Lagos’ unique security landscape,” the statement added.

While enjoining Lagos residents to provide maximum support to the new CP, Hundeyin said he was set to embark on his mission to maintain law and order, foster community trust, and enhance the safety of the state through his wealth of experience, deep local knowledge, and commitment to reforms.

Speaking during the handing over, the new Lagos police boss on his part said he accepted the mantle with great joy and a sense of purpose

“Lagos is a Centre of Excellence, I know the stakes are very high but it is surmountable. I believe the duty of a Commissioner of Police in Lagos State isn’t candy, that we hand to a crying child. So, I believe that to whom much is given, much is expected,” he added.

While thanking the governor of the state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for having confidence in his capacity, Olawale further said, “And to the good people of Lagos, I am one of you. I live here, I work here. So, it’s beyond an official assignment, it becomes personal because I’m a stakeholder in larger Lagos.

“And I promise you, the Nigeria Police in Lagos has done well, it’s only going to get better. My predecessor, my boss, has told me all I need to know. So, to me, it’s a marching order.

“And because of what Lagos is, and my professional experience in Lagos, the span of about two decades, I’m sure the job shall be done. And the name of God shall be glorified. The good people of Lagos should expect nothing but excellence.”

He promised to be fair to all, but be firm noting that by the grace of the Almighty God, Lagos shall continue to be a model of policing, not only for Nigeria but also for the world in general.
