Anambra CP orders officers’ arrest for killing civilian

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has ordered the detention of members of a patrol team that killed a civilian along the Onitsha-Owerri Road, in the Onitsha metropolis of the state.

The command’s spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, adding that a preliminary investigation fingered a corporal among the patrol team as the suspect.

Ikenga said the CP’s directive followed an ongoing investigation into the victim’s murder.

He said, “CP Itam orders the detention of police patrol team members over the murder of an unsuspecting member of the public along the Onitsha-Owerri Road, Onitsha. As preliminary investigation indicates among the patrol team, a police corporal was the suspect in the act.

“The CP directs the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, sues for calm and assures all that the command will ensure a thorough investigation into the case for justice to prevail. Further development shall be communicated.”

On October 13, 2023, a 29-year-old Chibueze Nwakor, father of three children, who hailed from Owerre-Ezukala, in Orumba South Local Government Area of the state, was reportedly shot dead near Sokoto Road, Main Market in Onitsha, allegedly by policemen attached to the Onitsha Area Command.

The deceased, who was said to be on his way to the market to purchase a food item, was shot by the security officers for his inability to help them locate the direction, in which they were heading on the said date.

After shooting him, the policemen were said to have jumped into their ash-coloured commuter Hiace shuttle bus and zoomed off.

The deceased’s mother, Mrs Dorcas Nwakor, petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over the alleged killing of her son.

The All Progressives Congress Governorship Campaign Council in the September 21 poll in Edo State has called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to subject leading candidates to compulsory drug tests to ascertain their level of sanity.

In a statement made available by the council’s Director of Media, Kassim Afegbua, on Wednesday in Benin, the state capital, he urged the NDLEA to zero in on all the frontline candidates of the major political parties with a view to ascertaining their sanity.

“We have been reliably informed that some of them are alleged to be heavy consumers of banned substances and also alcohol. A test for all of them will unveil their level of sanity.

“Edo voters must be well-guided in making informed choices during the elections and avoid voting for a candidate who will spend the state’s resources in funding drug and alcoholic lifestyles,” he said.

Afegbua said the compulsory test would save Edo people of future embarrassment that may arise, adding that voters can not be deceived again.

He added, “Edo State is too decent to have a governor who will bring shame to the people. Anyone who wants to govern Edo State should not be a heavy consumer of marijuana. This is a banned substance, and we expect the NDLEA to verify and conduct tests on the major candidates.

“Our candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, is prepared to submit himself to any test any time he’s called upon. We expect similar assurances from the other candidates to ascertain their level of sanity.

“It will be a big shame for residents of other states to drag our people in the mud for mistakenly voting for a candidate whose state of mind can not be guaranteed. That is a big risk Edo people can not gamble with. We are doing this to save our state, and we hope that the NDLEA will quickly swing into action and do the needful.

“As we countdown to September 21, we will continue to mount pressure on NDLEA and other law enforcement agencies to come to the aid of Edo people and subject the candidates to compulsory drug tests. The people deserve to know who they are supporting.

“We must unearth any padded candidate who pretends to be a saint during the day but a notorious gangster at night. Edo people deserve a governor with a sane mind to lead us into prosperity.”

Ondo man arrested for shooting rival in concubine’s home

The Ondo state police command has arrested a 43-year-old man, Mr. Ajagba Joseph, for allegedly attempting to murder a man he found in his concubine’s house.

This was made known in a statement shared by the police command on X.com on Wednesday.

According to the statement the incident occurred on August 23rd when Joseph visited his lover’s home and met another man, who was also reportedly in a relationship with the same woman.

Angered by the situation, Joseph allegedly pulled out a single-barrel gun and shot the other man.

The victim survived the attack and is currently recuperating from his injuries.

The statement said, “Attempted Murder – This married man, Mr Ajagba Joseph aged 43 on 23rd of Aug, went to his concubine’s house n met a co concubine, he became angry and shot the other concubine with his single barrel gun, victim recuperating, suspect in custody and will soon be charged to court.

I took legal action against Ayu to save PDP

A Peoples Democratic Party Chairmanship hopeful, Terhile Utaan, on Wednesday, said that dragging the former national chairman of the party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, to court was a great sacrifice to save the party.

Speaking to journalists after he consulted with leaders of PDP from the Tiv ethnic group under the auspices of G14, Utaan explained that the party was in total confusion when the Ijorov council ward claimed to have suspended Ayu.

He said, “I did not remove Dr Iyorchia Ayu. You all know there was a lot of confusion when he was suspended by his Ijorov council ward because he said he was not removed and the ward chairman said he was removed.

“It was in the light of this confusion that I went to court to seek interpretation of what the constitution of PDP says. So, what I did was courageous and it was an intervention to save the soul of the party.

“My going to court was a sacrifice to salvage PDP.”

Utaan stated that his agenda was to unite the party to be able to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressive Congress.

“I am coming out to provide intervention to the party and if I emerge my immediate task is to unify the party because the party has lost its soul.

“We must return power to the people and we can only do that if we unify the party and bring our leaders back to the table,” he said.

Leader of the G14, Laha Dzever said that Utaan had come to consult the party leadership in the Tiv 14 local government areas of the state about his aspiration.

Dzever said as leaders and elders they had informed him of the great task ahead of him if he becomes the national chairman of the party, parts of this is to rebuild the party because the party is fragmented and ensure that the party gets back to power.

Recall that the opposition PDP was engulfed in an internal crisis shortly after the party presidential primary in 2023 that produced Atiku Abubakar.

The G5 governors led by Nyesom Wike had asserted that North could not produce a presidential candidate and also have a party national chairman and insisted that the party national chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu must step down.

Police arrest child trafficker, rescue victims in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command said it has arrested a suspect(name withheld), who is said to be a member of a gang that specialises in child trafficking from Nigeria to neighbouring countries like Ghana and the Benin Republic.

The command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a press statement on Wednesday.

Ikenga said the arrest followed the concern raised by the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Nnaghe Itam, about the increasing reports of missing persons in the state.

He said, “Anambra Police Command have in custody a suspect(name withheld), a member of a gang that specialises in child trafficking between the ages of 13 to 16 to neighbouring countries like Ghana, Benin Republic etc.

“The arrest is following the concern of the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, about the spate of reports of missing persons, especially within Okpoko, Onitsha and tasked the police operatives to nip such in the bud.”

According to him, the child trafficking victim has been safely returned from Accra, Ghana to Nigeria and debriefed.

“The suspect is also currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka for possible rescue of other victims and arrest of other gang members,” he added.

Gunmen attack Plateau communities, kill eight

At least eight persons were confirmed dead on Wednesday after two separate attacks carried out by gunmen in Congo and Zarap communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

It was learnt that among the victims was a member of the Community Peace Service in Bokkos LG identified simply as Kenneth Kadish

It was further gathered that one of the attacks, which occurred around 7 p.m. near the Congo community’s market, took place shortly after the market had closed for the day.

While six persons died instantly in the Congo community, in the neighbouring Zarap community two persons were killed.

The chairman said, “Some armed men just came to the Angwa community and Zarap community and attacked the people on Tuesday night around 7 pm. Nobody expected that there would be any attack on the people who are struggling to put behind them the ugly experiences of previous attacks

“In Angwa Congo, the people were just relaxing and enjoying themselves because that Tuesday was their market day when some armed persons appeared and opened fire on those standing. Six persons died instantly while some persons were injured. Among the six persons who died was my member of peace Ambassador, Kenneth Kadish, who is a member of the Community Peace Service in Bokkos LGA.

“Then in the Zarap community, some gunmen on motorbikes just shot at two persons standing in front of their houses and killed two of them. All the attacks and killings happened on Tuesday night and took the same pattern ”

The chairman, who condemned the attacks, said that the matter had been reported to the security agents.

“We have reported the attacks to the security agents because the place where the attack on the Angwa Congo community took place was not far from the security checkpoint. They have come to check the place and I think they have started their investigation to know those who carried out the attack and possibly apprehend them,” the chairman said.

The latest attack adds to the growing insecurity in Bokkos LGA, where various communities have been repeatedly targeted, leaving residents in a constant state of fear and uncertainty.

There was pandemonium in Ilisan Remo in Ikenne Local Government on Tuesday as a detachment of soldiers and police clashed with some Hausa youths over their insistence on killing an army officer alleged to have been part of a two-man gang who had attacked one of them and wanted to disappear with his motorcycle.

Our correspondent, who was at the scene of the crisis, gathered that while one of the alleged thieves had been clubbed and burnt to death, the other young man alleged to be wearing an army uniform escaped into one of the buildings after being stabbed.

The Hausa youths, however, mobilised themselves and vowed to deal with the escapee the same way they dealt with his accomplice.

All entreaties by the leaders of the community and the police who first responded fell on their deaf ears as they insisted on killing the military personnel in hiding, explaining that they have suffered so much from those who usually attack them and collect their bikes.

A detachment of soldiers in two pickup vans later came around shooting sporadically into the air and sending people to scamper to safety.

The Sagamu Area Command of the Nigeria Police had earlier responded with an armoured tank stationed at Ilisan junction to quell the crisis.

A resident of the town who craved anonymity told our correspondent that many of the Hausas have lost their motorcycles to these assailants.

He, however, condemned their insistence on taking laws into their own hands.

“Some of these Hausas have lost their motorcycles to these attackers in recent times but the right thing to do is to follow the law.

“It is wrong of them to be insisting on carrying out jungle justice. This was how they almost burned down the police station about three years ago because they insisted on killing two suspected bike thieves who were being held in custody at Ilisan police station.

“Today, they have killed one of the suspects and we gathered that the one wearing an army uniform who escaped into one of the buildings might not make it too because he had been wounded with a knife. This can’t continue, it is wrong,” the source said.

The Chairman of Ilisan Development Association, Otunba Wemmy Osude, in a statement on Tuesday, said the Hausa youths apprehended two suspects for stealing a motorcycle (okada).

“One of the suspects was caught by a mob and tragically set on fire. The other suspect, who was dressed in an army uniform, sought refuge in a nearby house.

“A large crowd of over 200 young northerners gathered outside the house, demanding the release of the suspect. Despite efforts to disperse the mob, they remained defiant.

“The situation intensified until the Army intervened with a commando-style rescue operation, successfully evacuating the suspect.

“During the operation, a shootout occurred as soldiers responded to the increasingly hostile crowd, who began throwing stones and damaging two vehicles.

“The soldiers displayed remarkable bravery and professionalism, using tear gas to disperse the mob and restore order to the area,” the statement read.

The Assistant Director Army Public Relations 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, Captain Idereghi Akari, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Wednesday.

Akari, however, said that the soldier alleged to have been wounded by the Hausas was not a thief while the person killed was a civilian promising to get back to our correspondent for more details

Gunmen kill policeman, raze police station in Imo

Gunmen on Tuesday night killed a police officer in Imo State

The incident happened at NEPA Junction, Umulogho, Obowo Local Government Area of the state.

According to Metro gathered that the gunmen dragged the police officer out of his room before killing him.

An eyewitness said the gunmen made sure that no police officer was found living in that compound.

The eyewitness said, “They left after about 45 minutes of their unhindered operation, shooting sporadically to scare residents away.”

It was also gathered that after the operation, the gunmen came back in the morning and razed down the Otoko Divisional police station located along the Owerri-Umuahia road.

There were multiple attacks by the gunmen as they killed two security guards same time at Umuelemai, in Isiala Mbano Local Government, and burned vehicles on the premises.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, said the perpetrators of the crime would be apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law.

He said the command’s tactical team has been deployed to the area to assure residents of the protection of lives and property.

Court jails 39 internet fraudsters in Oyo

Operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested 39 suspected internet fraudsters in Oyo State.

The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Ibadan, the state capital.

The suspects were prosecuted by Justices O.S. Adeyemi, Bayo Taiwo and Ladiran Akintola, all of the Oyo State High Court, sitting in Ibadan.

Oyewale said they were prosecuted on a separate one-count charge each, bordering on impersonation, cheating, possession of fraudulent documents and obtaining by false pretence.

The convicts were Fasanya Gbolahan; Nkiri Destiny; Fakoya Samuel; Owolabi Damilare; Isiaka Adebayo; Olawoyin Olasunkanmi; Olawale Abideen; Olayiwola Waheed; Kehinde Abdulrauf; Okunlola Abidoun; Okunlola Mujeeb; Ademeso Olamide; Lawal Ridwan; Femi Oluremi; Ehinmowo Damilola; Joseph Justice; Enitan John; Kolawole Josaiah; Alo Emmanuel; Adetola Idris and Joshua Shiyanbola.

Others include Idowu David; Salau Ayomide; Adeyemi Adeleke; Philip Olatunde; Fasanya Tunde; Seun Babatunde; Ogoayo Sijuola; Akanji Bidoun; Quadri Oyindamola; Samuel Oluwatobi; Ogunyemi Opemiposi; Olabanjo Olatunbosun; Paul Uche; Ayomiposi Akinyimika; Abdullahi Adisa; Ajetunmobi Olashile; Oluwaseun Adeniran and Onah Ayomide.

The charge against Austine Ayomide reads, “That you, Ayomide ‘M’ on or about March 28, 2024, at Ibadan, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, fraudulently impersonated by representing yourself to be a white woman by the name Linda Mary from United States of America, through your Facebook account (Linda Mary) to one Clifton Deininger, from United States of America, with intent to gain advantage for yourself and thereby committed an offence of personation contrary to Section 484 of the Criminal Code Law Cap 38, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.”

They all pleaded “guilty” to the charges when they were read to them, following which prosecution counsel reviewed the facts of the cases, tendered incriminating documents and prayed the courts to convict and sentence them accordingly.

Justice Adeyemi convicted and sentenced Ayomide to one year of community service or to pay a fine of N200,000; Tunde got a month jail term or to pay a fine of N250,000 while Abeeb Ayomide, Adeleke, Babatunde, Biodun, Oyindamola, Oluwatobi, Olatunbosun, Uche, Akinyimika, Adisa, Olashile and Adeniran bagged six months community service each and to pay N50, 000.00 each in addition to their sentence, besides Abeeb Ayomide who was slammed with N500, 000.00 in addition to his sentence.

He slammed Sijuola with one month of community service or to pay a fine of N100,000. Olatunde and Opemiposi were handed three months of community service without an option of a fine.

Justice Taiwo on his part convicted and sentenced Taoreed Abidoun to three months imprisonment and Mujeeb to four months jail term while Olasunkanmi and Abideen bagged six months community service each and were further ordered to pay a fine of N150,000.00 each in addition their sentences.

He convicted and sentenced Gbolahan, Damilare, Adebayo and Abdulrauf to five months of community service each and gave the latter a fine option of N100,000. Waheed and Samuel got four months of community service, and a fine of N100,000.00, while Destiny bagged two months of community service.

Justice Akintola convicted and sentenced Olamide, Oluremi, Damilola, Justice, Josaiah, Emmanuel and Shiyanbola to bag a one-year jail term each or to pay a fine of N30, 000.00, N50, 000.00, N75, 000.00, N75, 000.00, N50, 000.00, N120, 000.00 and N100, 000.00 respectively.

Damilola forfeited a green-coloured Nissan Micra car with registration number: LSD – 464 – GU with Chassis Number: SJNFBAK11U3001751; Emmanuel forfeited a black-coloured Lexus IS 250 car with registration number: MUS–158–JHS and Justice forfeited a black-coloured Toyota Corolla car with registration number: FST-607–GN.

Justice Akintola convicted and sentenced Idris and David to six months of community service each or to pay fines of N60,000.00 and N150, 000.00 respectively. Ridwan and John bagged three months of community service each or to pay fines of N25, 000.00 and N30, 000.00 respectively.

The convicts forfeited all items recovered from them to the Federal Government.

All the convicts began their journey to prison when they were arrested in a sting operation for fraudulent internet activities.
