Edo gov election results another rape on democracy- Ondo PDP

Hours after the governorship election in Edo State was concluded, the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State rejected the outcome of the poll.

As announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday, the All Progressives Congress won the poll with a total of 291,667 votes while the ruling PDP scored 247,274 votes and the Labour Party polled 22,763 votes.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity of the PDP Campaign Organisation, Ayo Fadaka, described the development as another rape of democracy in Nigeria.

The PDP said the election result was a total disregard for the electoral desires of the people as validly expressed through the ballot.

The statement read, “The Edo State Governorship Election results represent another rape on democracy in Nigeria and for the umpteenth time, we declare that this is absolutely condemnable, as it betrays a total disregard for the electoral desires of the people as validly expressed through the ballot.

“Nigerians are not fooled by the officially declared result by INEC, they know that PDP won that election and this is a shame on those who sit atop our affairs. It is disappointing that INEC could disregard the electoral law by shifting the collation of votes in the designated local government collation centres to its headquarters in Benin, this is expressly against the electoral law.

“In Ondo State, we have taken due cognisance of these dastardly acts committed by agencies saddled with the responsibilities to provide level playing grounds, and sadly failed to live up to expectations, it is a shameful act that lowers the status and respect due to Nigeria in the committee of nations.”

It noted that the PDP in Ondo had prepared to ensure that rules were followed in the November 16 governorship election.

“We need to underscore that we will not acquiesce or take kindly to any act geared towards compromising votes in our election. We state emphatically for all to see and hear that Ondo is not Edo, our attitude, understanding and patience differ, we will vote and protect our vote here. We are resolved to give everything to ensure that the electoral desires of our people will command attention and attain the desired goals.

“As they say, politics is local, in Ondo State, the people are already protesting against the hardship imposed on them by the APC government, they are protesting against hunger, lack and want, Ondo State people are protesting against the high inflationary trend that has denied them not only the future but even the present!

“In Ondo State, we are already protesting against a Party, the APC and a government that has institutionalised hardship, penury and poverty and our protest day is the 16th of November, we thus sound a note of warning to those whose trade is the compromise of ballot that danger looms if they seek to tamper with our votes,” the statement read.

Why I killed 18-year-old female church member

A 23-year-old philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ayomide Adeleye, has revealed the chilling details behind the murder of an 18-year-old female church member, Christiana Idowu.

According to a Vanguard report on Sunday, Adeleye, now in custody at the Lagos State Police Command Tactical Unit in Ikeja, admitted to killing Idowu due to financial difficulties.

“I killed her because I had financial problems,” he stated, describing how he lured the victim to his home under the pretence of repairing her phone.

The incident occurred when Idowu, an Industrial Training student at Yaba College of Technology, visited Adeleye’s residence.

“She came to our house around 5pm on the day of the incident and asked me to repair her phone,” Adeleye recounted.

He then detailed the horrific moment of the murder, stating, “I just grabbed her, applied pressure. She started struggling. She didn’t really shout because I already suppressed her. I then squeezed her throat, and she gave up.”

Following the murder, Adeleye embarked on a macabre plan to dispose of the body and extort money from the victim’s mother.

He described digging a shallow grave behind his compound and burying Idowu’s body in the early hours of the morning.

“By 4 am the following day, I woke up, I continued digging. Honestly, I did not close my eyes till daybreak,” he said.

In a cruel twist, Adeleye then contacted Idowu’s mother, demanding ransom.

“The first thing I said to her was, ‘Hello, madam. we have your daughter,’” he said.

Through manipulation and threats, he managed to extort N360,000 from the grieving mother.

Narrating the circumstances after demating three million from the mother, Adeleye said, “I know for a fact that she didn’t have three million. Even if she did not have that amount, I was ready to collect any amount because I desperately needed money no matter the amount.

“After going back and forth with her, she said she was able to get N350, 000.00 and I gave her a sporty bet account to pay the money in order to avoid being traced.”

He added that he later requested for an extra N10,000, which the mother had said was all she had left.

Adeleye’s capture came through tracing his SportyBet account, where he had uploaded his National Identification Number.

“If I had not uploaded my NIN, it would just be an empty account,” he explained, revealing how his attempt to cover his tracks ultimately led to his arrest.

“But the moment I uploaded my NIN, all my personal details, my location, my address, my name, everything, was already on the sporty bet. The girl’s phone was also with me, they could have traced the location of the phone, that was how they got my location,” he added.

Expressing remorse for his actions, Adeleye stated, “I regret that I killed her because my mum and her mum were friends.”

He added, “I don’t deserve any mercy for what I have done. At the same time, I ask God to forgive me. What I did was totally wrong and I regret it.

“I feel remorseful for what I have done. If there’s any way I could be given a second chance, I want to be given one but I deserve death, honestly. I have been planning to kill myself. While I was in the guard room, I tried to look for any sharp object to cut myself so that I would bleed to death.”

Hippopotamus kills 60-year-old guard in Kebbi

A hippopotamus killed a 60-year-old fisherman, Malam Usman Maigadi, on Sunday at Yauri River, Kebbi State.

Maigadi, who worked as a guard at the Emir of Yauri’s Orchard Farm, was fishing when the animal attacked, likely in defense of its young, reports Daily Post.

The Chairman of Yauri Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu, confirmed Maigadi’s burial.

He stated, “Maigadi has been buried according to Islamic rites in Yauri, after a funeral prayer.”

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, Governor Nasir Idris extended condolences to the Yauri Emirate and Maigadi’s family.

“I want the emirate and members of the deceased family to take heart and accept the will of the Almighty in good faith.

“I pray to Allah to forgive the deceased’s shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus,” the governor said.

Meanwhile, animal attacks, though rare, can occur when humans inadvertently come into close contact with wildlife.

These incidents often happen when animals feel threatened or perceive a danger to their young or territory.

The Governor-elect of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has promised to bring the South-South state to an enviable height when he assumes office.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, on Sunday, declared Okpebholo, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, as the winner of the keenly contested election.

He polled 291,667 votes to defeat Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, who secured 247,274 and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, who came a distant third with 22,761 votes.

Addressing reporters on Sunday evening after he was declared winner of last Saturday’s governorship election, Okpebholo appreciated the people of the state for choosing the right person to govern them for the next four years.

He also vowed to continue from where the former governor Adams Oshiomhole stopped and would replicate what Senate President Godswill Akpabio did in Akwa Ibom State.

Okpebholo said, “I am very happy, and I thank the Edo people for choosing the right person to do the job. Look, the new Edo is rising. I am here to develop Edo. I want to transform Edo the way it should be.

“I want to tell you that I am starting from where Adams Oshiomhole stopped. I also want to let you also know that I would like to imitate what Akpabio has done in Akwa Ibom State. Edo has received a new transformation. By the grace of God, Edo is back again.”

Lagos residents bet to make hoax calls to emergency services – LASEMA sources

There have been growing concerns about a significant rise in false calls to emergency services by residents in Lagos State.

According to Metro however learnt that some residents are making hoax calls because of bets placed among themselves.

Sources in the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services who spoke to our correspondent on Saturday disclosed that some individuals often edged a bet to confirm if they would respond or not.

The development was said to have seriously disrupted the operations of the agencies.

One of the sources who craved anonymity as he was not permitted to speak on the matter said the cases of betting were discovered during findings made by the agencies to determine the factors associated with hoax calls.

“We have experienced an increase in false calls made to our offices and it was on this note that we discovered that some of the calls were made for different reasons, but the most surprising of them were cases of individuals making false calls after betting between themselves on whether we would respond or not.”

Another source who claimed to have experienced this alongside his team of emergency responders said it occurred three times.

“I have experienced this three times and we met the culprits during one of the encounters. When we got there the very day, we called them and they picked up. They later came out and told us that they had bet within themselves and they thought whether we would come or not. We could not do anything because the environment was very volatile,” he explained.

In April 2023, a Lagos magistrates court in Ikeja convicted a teenager, Uzuokwu Solomon, for making a false emergency call to the fire service.

The spokesperson for LASEMA, Nosa Okunbor, could not be reached as calls made to his phone were not responded to. A text message sent to him had yet to be responded to.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the LSFRS, Amodu Shakiru, said hoax calls recorded as a result of betting could not be ruled out.

He said, “With the advent of sports betting, it cannot be ruled out because the false call is not abating even after we made examples of false callers being prosecuted. We feel it ought to have reduced but appears to be on a steady rise, so we cannot rule out the possibility of making false calls on game betting.”

He added that the hoax callers were not always available at the address where the incident was said to have occurred.

He said, “You don’t even get to see them, you can’t even identify them when you get to the spot. The few ones we have been able to apprehend among those making hoax calls, we had to work with the police before apprehending them. For example, when you get to the location, it is either an address found but no cases of fire incident or an untraceable address. And in such an instance, if you call back the caller, it is either they are not picking up their calls or the line is switched off.

“We are making efforts to correct them and that is to enforce laws. It is also a criminal law by the Criminal Code of the country. When the Lagos State Government promulgated the law in 2012, it was all about how we enforce this because some of the calls are from third parties and because we don’t want to deter them from calling for help on behalf of someone else.

“So, by the time we start to prosecute everybody, it will also affect them and they may be discouraged to continue doing that for those in need of help in emergency cases,” he added.

Oyo mob beats soldier over alleged killing of NSCDC officer

A soldier identified as Abubakar has allegedly killed a Nigerian Civil and Security Defence Corps officer, Olapade Segun.

Abubakar and Segun were said to have met at a nightclub in the Bodija area of Oyo State on Friday.

According to Metro gathered on Sunday that a heated altercation ensued between the two security agents, which led Abubakar to bring out his dagger.

According to sources privy to the matter, who pleaded anonymity, Abubakar stabbed Segun and he died as a result of the blood lost through the incident.

A source told our correspondent that a mob angered by the incident beat up the soldier after he tried to escape from the scene.

“A soldier called Abubakar and an NSCDC official had a heated altercation at a nightclub in the Bodija area of Ibadan. The soldier, who was angered by the situation, brought out his dagger and stabbed the NSCDC officer. He died as a result of the blood he lost. The soldier wanted to run from the scene but the angry crowd got hold of him and beat him to a pulp. It took the arrival of his colleagues who dispersed the crowd before he was freed,” the source said.

Another source said some senior officers of the Nigerian Army have been visiting the state command of the NSCDC to investigate the matter.

“I learnt the Army has set up a panel to investigate the matter because some senior officers of the service have been visiting the state command concerning the incident.”

Efforts to get the Director of Nigerian Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, on Sunday evening were futile.

A call to his number indicated it was switched off. He had yet to respond to a message sent to him as of the time of filing this report.

His NSCDC counterpart, Babawale Afolabi, did not pick up several calls to his line and has yet to respond to messages sent to him on the matter.

Officers assaulting Imo man in viral video to face probe

The Imo State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing some officers in a violent confrontation with a man.

The incident was said to have occurred on September 16, 2024, during an arrest warrant execution for 32-year-old Prince Amaechi over alleged drug trafficking.

The video shows the officers pinning Amaechi to the ground and handcuffing him while he carried a child.  His wife who recorded the incident however called for help in the process.

Reacting to the incident in a press statement seen by According to Metro on Sunday, the spokesperson for the command, Henry Okoye, said four Anti-Narcotics Unit operatives were involved in the incident.

He identified them as Sergeant Patrick Nwangbo, Corporal Godswill Okechukwu, Corporal Justice Nnorom, and Corporal Goodluck Iwuagwu.

According to Okoye, the police command condemned the officers’ actions, describing them as unprofessional.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, had ordered the case transferred to the IGP X-Squad, Imo State Command, for a thorough investigation.

The statement partly reads: “The Imo State Police Command is aware of the recent video circulating on social media depicting a confrontation during the arrest of a young man and wants to assure the public that the command takes such matters seriously and is committed to maintaining law and order in the state.

“In response to the video, four operatives of the command’s Anti-Narcotics Unit, namely, Sgt Patrick Nwangbo, Cpl God’swill Okechukwu, Cpl Justice Nnorom and Cpl Goodluck Iwuagwu, embarked on an operation at Ovoro-Uzomiri Umuosu, Naze in Owerri North LGA of Imo State, on 16/09/2024 to execute an arrest warrant for a young man named, Prince Amaechi ( m) 32 years linked to a case of conspiracy and drug trafficking, based on the confession of previously arrested suspects named: Ijeoma Ezealamba, ‘f’, Ebenezer Chukwuka, ‘m’.

“During the operation, the suspect resisted arrest, leading to the escalation captured in the video.

“The command condemns the actions of the operatives, emphasising that the situation should have been handled with greater discretion and professionalism.

“The operatives involved have been apprehended for interrogation, and the Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the IGP X-Squad Imo State Command for thorough investigation.

“Additionally, the officers will face an orderly room trial pending the outcome of the investigation.

“The command urges the public to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation while we conduct an investigation.”

The PPRO said the Imo State Police Command was dedicated to transparency and would provide updates as appropriate to keep the members of the public informed.

Kano Anglican women donate foodstuff to inmates

The Kano Anglican Church Women’s wing has donated foodstuff and other items to the inmates of the Goron Dutse Medium Security Custodial Centre in the state.

The gifts comprising foodstuff, toiletries, clothing buckets and different types of seasoning were presented to them when a delegation from the church visited the custodial centre to support the inmates and promote their welfare.

Presenting the items on Saturday, the Chairperson, All Anglican Women, Mrs Edna Ezike, said the gesture was their little way of supporting the inmates in the facility.

Mrs Ezike urged the inmates to see their incarceration as an opportunity for self-reflection and change and to be good ambassadors after their release.

She urged the inmates not to go back to their old ways and imbibe the fear of God in their hearts, as well as take advantage of the rehabilitation and reintegration programmes in the centre to enable them to acquire life-changing skills and behaviours.

“Endeavour to utilise the skills acquired from the centre. We want to assure you that we are interested in your well-being. These items are donated to help add value to your standard of living.

“We have been visiting prisons for the last three years to encourage and support inmates in our little ways, as well as offer them advice,” she said.

The chairperson called on parents, guardians and the general public to train their children and wards in the way of the Lord, rather than mislead them.

She said the prison was not a good place to be, especially for the youths, who are the future leaders and pillars of their various families.

She called on philanthropists to visit the inmates regularly, support and provide them with provisions to make them feel loved.

Receiving the items on behalf of the management, a staff member of the correctional centre, who pleaded not to be named, described the gesture as timely and well-intended.

“This gesture is well-appreciated by us as these items will greatly improve the welfare of the inmates in this facility. We thank you immensely.’

Manager suspended for dragging attendants to herbalist over alleged theft

The management of  Bovas and Company Limited has suspended one of its managers in Ibadan, Oyo State, for taking some petrol station attendants to a herbalist over an alleged theft incident.

This was disclosed in a statement on the company’s Facebook page on Sunday.

The suspension followed a viral video showing some persons, suspected to be staff members of the organisation, gathered in a room and being made to swear over the alleged theft of the company’s money by a suspected herbalist.

The video also shows a man, claiming to be the manager, narrating to the herbalist how the money had gone missing, while a voice in the background is heard saying they are staff members of Bovas.

Reacting to the video in a statement, Bovas condemned the actions of the yet-to-be-identified manager, describing them as unprofessional.

The statement noted that the manager had been suspended, and an internal investigation had begun into the matter.

It read, “It has come to our attention that an unfortunate incident involving one of our station managers has surfaced on social media. This manager took inappropriate and unauthorised actions in addressing a theft case at the station. Bovas and Company Limited categorically condemns this act and dissociates itself from any behaviour that contradicts our core values of integrity, transparency, honesty, and professionalism.

“Upon becoming aware of this incident, we have immediately suspended the station manager and begun a thorough internal investigation. We want to assure the public that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken, in line with our company policies and the laws of Nigeria.”

The company stressed that it was committed to maintaining ethical standards in its operations across all its stations.

“We remain committed to the highest standards of ethical conduct across all our locations. Our station attendants and managers are regularly trained on the importance of integrity and due process; we do not condone any actions that compromise this trust.

80-year-old man arrested with cannabis in Lagos

An 80-year-old grandfather,  Pa Aremu Shojobi, has been arrested by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency with 14 kilograms of cannabis.

Shojobi confessed to having been selling illicit drugs in the last 25 years, according to a statement on Sunday by the agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi.

The agency stated that the suspect got the drugs from Benin Republic.

Babafemi said, “Operatives of the Lagos State Strategic Command of the Agency on Friday, September 20, arrested an 80-year-old grandfather, Pa Aremu Shojobi, with 14 kilograms of cannabis at his home in the Iyana Ipaja area of the state. In his statement, the octogenarian claimed he had been in the business of selling illicit drugs for 25 years. He further claimed he got his supplies from the Benin Republic and sold to his customers from his residence between 7 am and 10 pm every day.”

Babafemi also said a total of 25,000,000.00 pills of tapentadol, an opioid three times stronger than tramadol and 350,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup, were recovered at the Tin Can port complex in Lagos.

He added that the seizures were made on September 17 and 20, 2024, from three containers that had been on the watchlist of the agency following processed intelligence.

“As a result, the NDLEA requested 100% joint examination of the shipments with men of the Nigeria Customs Service and other security agencies. The 25 million pills of tapentadol have an estimated street value of N13,725,000,000.00 while the codeine consignment has an estimated street value of N2,450,000,000.00,  bringing the total value of the seizures to N16,175,000,000.00.

“The tapentadol consignment packed in 500 cartons was discovered in one of the containers on Tuesday, September 17, while another container examined the same day contained 175,000 bottles of Barcadin cough syrup with codeine packed in 875 cartons. The third container containing 175,000 bottles of CSC cough syrup with codeine was examined on Friday, September 20,” the statement added.

Similarly, Babafemi said the NDLEA operatives in Lagos on September 18 raided the two homes of a community leader and Sarkin Yamma of Badagry West LCDA, Alhaji Bashir Mohammed Talba, where 226kg of cannabis was recovered from his two wives and son.

He added that though Alhaji Talba is currently at large, a search of his house in the Ashipa area of Seme Badagry led to the recovery of 93 compressed blocks of cannabis sativa weighing 57.6kg from his first wife, Asma’u Bashiru, 35, and son, Sadat Bashiru, 22, while another search of his house at the Aketegbo area of Seme Badagry led to the seizure of 302 compressed blocks of cannabis weighing 168.6kg from his second wife, Hauwa Bashir, 42.

“No less than 720 blocks of Arizona, a strain of cannabis weighing 390kg, were also recovered from a Mitsubishi delivery van marked MUS 720 XH at the Ojo area of Lagos on Monday, September 16,” he added.

At the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, Babafemi said the NDLEA operatives on September 15 arrested a 38-year-old drug mule, Okafor Ifeanyi Anthony, while attempting to board a Qatar Airlines flight to Iran via Doha with 76 wraps of cocaine in his stomach.

“After three days of excretion observation, Okafor excreted the 76 pellets of the ingested cocaine weighing 1.267kg.

In Kogi State, the NDLEA officers on patrol along the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja Expressway on Tuesday, September 17, recovered 700,000 pills of exol-5 coming from Lagos for distribution in Kano and Kaduna states, while a suspect, Udemefuna Chibuike, 23, was arrested by operatives on Friday, September 20, along the Mokwa-Jebba Road, Niger State, in possession of 49,000 tablets of tramadol, 20,000 tablets of diazepam, 100 ampoules of tramadol injection and 50 bottles of cough syrup with codeine,” Babafemi added.

The statement continued, “A total of 451 blocks of cannabis weighing 213kg were intercepted along the Azikiwe Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Wednesday, September 18, by the NDLEA officers who apprehended a suspect, Ogochukwu Paul, 33, conveying the consignment to a notorious drug haven in Borikiri.

“While operatives in Plateau State on Friday, September 20, arrested a wanted suspect, Jonathan Ali Abuttur, 46, at the Agingi-Rukuba Road, Bassa LGA, in possession of 808kg of cannabis sativa concealed in 68 bags of sugar and fertiliser, their counterparts in Kwara State also nabbed Shaibu Musa with 28kg of the same psychoactive substance.”
