One dead as chopper crashes into 54-storey building in New York

One person has died after a helicopter crashed on top of a skyscraper in Manhattan, New York’s fire department has said.

The pilot of the helicopter was killed after it crashed on the roof of a 54-storey office building in rainy weather shortly before 2pm local time (8pm GMT).

Dozens of emergency vehicles swarmed the area around Seventh Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets, not far from Times Square and Rockefeller Centre.

Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was at the scene soon after the crash, told reporters that it appeared a helicopter attempted a forced emergency landing on the roof and that no one inside the building had been injured.

The Federal Aviation Administration said that “preliminary information is that only the pilot was on board” the Agusta A109E helicopter.

A fire that broke out following the crash was quickly brought under control, Mr Cuomo said. “People who were in the building said they felt the building shake,” he said.

Mustapha, who made the call in Abuja during the unveiling of the National Democracy Day Exhibition with theme, “Unbroken Democracy”, urged Nigerians to appreciate the country’s rich human, capital and natural endowment.

He called for collective efforts to exploit the resources with a view to moving the country on the path of prosperity, unity and progress.

The SGF said that the unveiling of the exhibition was part of the activities lined up for the 2019 National Democracy Day celebration to showcase the political and cultural history of Nigeria.

“The exhibition with the theme, unbroken democracy takes us back to memory lane on our political struggles and eventual freedom from the British Colonial masters.

“I believe that this will reawaken the minds and consciousness of Nigerians to educate our young ones about the founding fathers of our great nation.

“This indeed is timely as the 2019 celebration coincides with the 20th anniversary of Nigeria’s uninterrupted democracy since 1999.

“It is also to consolidate on achievements recorded in strengthening and deepening our democratic experience since June 12, 1993.

”It is my sincere hope that this exhibition will bring to remembrance the birth of our political history and also serve as a uniting force for all Nigerians.

Shocking: 10 year old commits suicide

The family of fifth-grader Kevin Reese Jr. — who hanged himself in a closet of his Houston-area home is now urging schools to address bullying, news station KTRKreported.

His mom, Crystal Smith, said Kevin was a “goofy child,” but often struggled with being picked on at Robinson Elementary School.

“They wrote on his tablet to ‘Kill yourself, you don’t belong here,’” Smith said. “When it got physical back in November, he came home crying because he didn’t fight back and one of the boys punched him several times coming from recess.”

She reported the incident to school officials, who told her there was no evidence of a “physical fight,” the local ABC affiliate reported.

“They told me they never found any bullying going on,” Smith said.

The taunting at school reportedly continued, the mom said. Then, two months later, the young boy took his own life while his mom was out of town for work.

“He just had enough,” Smith told the station. “He just had enough and he felt that he was backed into a corner.”

Smith said she’s speaking out to raise awareness about preventing child suicide.

“Pay attention to your child, don’t assume that things are handled at the school, stay on top of it until you see something come out on the end,” Smith said.

Malian village attack leaves 100 dead

Nearly 100 people have been killed in attack in a village in central Mali inhabited by the Dogon ethnic group, reports say.

The attack happened in Sobale Kou, close to Sanga town, according to French-language news outlet RFI.

The bodies of the dead have been burned, says a local official, and the search for more bodies is ongoing.

There have been numerous attacks in Mali in recent months, some ethnic, some carried out by jihadist groups.

Clashes between Dogon hunters and semi-nomadic Fulani herders are frequent.

In the same region in March, more than 130 Fulani villagers were killed by armed men wearing traditional Dogon hunters’ clothing.

Sedlec Ossuary: A Church Built With 40,000 Human Skulls
 In the heart of the Czech countryside, Kutná Hora houses some of the most beautiful architecture in the whole of Bohemia.
Positioned around 70 kilometers (about 43 miles) east of Prague, this medieval city competed politically, economically and culturally with the capital city during the 13th to 16th centuries, thanks in part to the silver mine boom that enriched the area at the time.
Today, however, Kutná Hora displays a more sedate, yet impressive vision of Czech culture and tradition — hence its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. But amid its Baroque-style buildings and medieval churches, lies an attraction that’s definitely not for the faint-hearted traveler.
And while the Church of All Saints seems rather unassuming from the outside, lurking underneath is an enthralling tale of mystery and death.
Dubbed the Church of Bones, the story behind this grisly attraction begins in 1278, when the King of Bohemia sent the abbot of the Sedlec Cistercian Monastery to Jerusalem.
He’s said to have come back with a jar of soil from the Golgotha, the site where the crucifixion of Jesus Christ is said to have occurred, and spread it around the local cemetery.
When news of the “Holy Soil” became public, people from all over the region started requesting to be buried there.
The bones that currently reside in Sedlec Ossuary were exhumed from this site in the 15th century to make room for the town’s expansion, as well as new burials.
They apparently lay stacked in the basement of this Gothic church until 1870, when a woodcarver named Frantisek Rint was appointed to excavate and organize them. The result is spectacularly shocking.
This underground chapel contains a chandelier made entirely of bones, as well as garlands of human skulls.

Democracy Day: FG declares June 12 Public Holiday

The Nigerian Government on Monday declared Wednesday, June 12, as a public holiday, to commemorate the nation’s National Democracy Day.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Mrs Georgina Ehuriah, made the declaration on Monday in Abuja.

The Nigerian Government’s decision followed the enactment into law of June 12 as Democracy Day annually in Nigeria.

Ehuriah congratulated all Nigerians at home and abroad for the entrenchment of democratic rule in the country.

The permanent secretary called on Nigerians to continue to cherish the sacrifice made by heroes of democracy in the country.

She emphasised that those who lost their lives in the struggle for the actualisation of democratic governance in Nigeria in order to make the country a better place for all must not be forgotten.

Ehuriah further called for the collaboration and cooperation of all Nigerians with President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration towards achieving the nation’s collective aspiration for unity, peace and socio-economic development.

She wished all Nigerians, at home and abroad, a happy Democracy Day celebration.

“The terrorist group is known for its online media propaganda and quest to maintain a virtual caliphate,” he said.

It would be recalled that boko haram launched using the media in 2009, starting with a very traditional media approach through propaganda films, many of them aimed at recruiting new fighters from Nigeria and neighbouring countries including Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

In 2014, their strategy changed into more use of social media platforms, videos, and creating multiple accounts like Facebook and Twitter platforms, mostly as a way to communicate with individuals.

Buhari writes CJN over appointment of Supreme Court Justices

President Muhammadu Buhari has written the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Tanko Muhammad, over the appointment of five additional Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

According to him, the President wrote: Pursuant to the provisions of Section 230(2) A&B of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I am pleased to request that you initiate in earnest the process of appointing additional five Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria to make the full complement of 21 Justices as provided by the aforementioned provisions of the Constitution.

This is in line with the Governments Agenda of repositioning the Judiciary in general and Supreme Court in particular for greater efficiency, with a view to reducing the backlogs of appeals pending at the Supreme Court.

“Please accept, your Lordship, the assurances of my highest regards.”

Meanwhile, Mr Garba also noted that President Buhari has accepted the voluntary retirement from service of Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria which took effect from May 28.

He said the President thanked Justice Onnoghen for his service to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and wished him the best of retirement life.
