FINLAND IS THE WORLD’S HAPPIEST COUNTRY

0
Finland has a lot to celebrate. Not only does it have a capital city bursting with gastronomic creativity, the spectacular Northern Lights and Santa Claus’s year-round home (plus the reindeer support staff) in Lapland. It’s also the happiest country in the world for the second year in a row, according to the latest World Happiness Report.
It’s followed by Denmark, Norway, Iceland and The Netherlands.
The world's happiest country likes ice swimming.

The World Happiness Report was released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations on March 20, the date that the United Nations has declared to be the International Day of Happiness.
The report ranks countries on six key variables that support well-being: income, freedom, trust, healthy life expectancy, social support and generosity.
“The top 10 countries tend to rank high in all six variables, as well as emotional measures of well-being,” says report co-editor John Helliwell, a professor emeritus of economics at the University of British Columbia.
And that’s not just about the native-born residents of those countries.
“It’s true that last year all Finns were happier than rest of the countries’ residents, but their immigrants were also happiest immigrants in the world,” says Helliwell.
“It’s not about Finnish DNA. It’s the way life is lived in those countries.”
They pay high taxes for a social safety net, they trust their government, they live in freedom and they are generous with each other. “They do care about each other,” he says. “That’s the kind of place people want to live.”

HUAWEI: US ban will cost us $30 billion in two years

0

Huawei will miss sales forecasts by about $30 billion over the next couple of years because of a US campaign against its business, the founder and CEO of the Chinese tech company said Monday.

“In the next two years, I think we will reduce our capacity, our revenue will be down by about $30 billion compared to the forecast, so our sales revenue this year and next year will be about $100 billion,” Ren Zhengfei said during a panel discussion at Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen.
Sales last year grew by about 20% to 721 billion yuan ($104 billion).
The embattled Chinese tech firm has since become a flashpoint in the US-China trade war. The Trump administration delivered a huge blow on May 16, when it added Huawei to a blacklist that bars US companies from selling it technology without first obtaining a US government license.
Washington fears that Beijing could use its equipment to spy on other nations and it’s been pressuring allies to shut the company out of next generation super-fast 5G wireless networks. Huawei has repeatedly denied that any of its products pose a risk to national security.
Despite being locked out of the US market for nearly a decadebecause of those concerns, Huawei grew into the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker and the No. 2 smartphone brand.
But just four weeks on the US trade blacklist is hitting the company hard, hurting its smartphone business and eroding its dominance in 5G equipment.
Overseas smartphone unit sales have “dropped by 40%,” Ren said. A company spokesman said that Ren was referring to a fall in sales between May 17 and June 16, compared to the month to May 16.

Indian Houdini drowns after ‘magic’ act goes wrong

0

Indian police on Monday recovered the body of a magician who drowned while trying to replicate an underwater Houdini-inspired stunt — tying himself up with chains and ropes and being lowered into a river.

Rescue workers found the body of Chanchal Lahiri late Monday in the Hooghly river, the deputy commissioner of the port division of Kolkata police, Syed Waquar Raza, told AFP

The 40-year-old Lahiri, who was known by his stage name “Jadugar Mandrake” (Wizard Mandrake), was lowered by winch into the river in Kolkata on Sunday in a yellow and red costume.

But the 40-year-old — his legs and his arms tightly bound — failed to emerge from the water, to the horror of onlookers including his family and team members.

Authorities had initially believed that the vanishing act could be part of the stunt but immediately mobilised help to rescue him.

Lahiri told AFP before the attempted escape act that he had successfully pulled off a similar stunt 21 years ago at the same venue in the eastern city.

“I was inside a bulletproof glass box tied with chain and locks and dropped down from Howrah bridge. Then I came out within 29 seconds,” he said.

He admitted it would be tough to free himself this time.

“If I can open it up then it will be magic, but if I can’t it will be tragic,” he said.

He also said he was undertaking the death-defying stunt to “revive interest in magic”.

When Lahiri tried another stunt at the river in 2013, he was assaulted by onlookers who saw him escape from a locked cage via a door that was clearly visible.

He was beaten and punched and his long flowing golden-brown wig was pulled off by the crowd.

Almost a decade earlier, he declared he would walk on the river waters but had to beat a hasty retreat when the act went wrong.

Harry Houdini was a Hungarian-born American stuntman who became a sensation in the early 20th century with daredevil feats including escaping from a crate lowered into the East River in New York in 1912.

CRIME RATE IS DECLINING – IGP CLAIMS

0

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has claimed that the crime rate in the country was declining, despite reports of violent killings and kidnappings across the country.

The Zamfara Police Command on Sunday confirmed that 34 persons were killed by bandits in Tungar Kafau and Gidan Wawa communities in Shinkafi Local Government Area of the state last Friday.

But speaking in Abuja on Monday at a meeting with senior officers at the Force headquarters, the IG stated that the police apprehended 424 suspected kidnappers between May 10 and June 14, 2019, with 101 persons arrested in Kaduna state.

He added that 79 suspects were picked up in Katsina, 54 suspects in Nasarawa and 32 in Taraba state.

Mohammed also explained that 276 armed robbery suspects were arrested within the same period with the highest number of 38 in Edo state, followed by 25 in Nasarawa state and 23 in the Federal Capital Territory.

He stated, “Within this context, it is noted that while there are still isolated cases of internal security breaches which often attract publicity and national attention, the crime rate in recent times has been on the decline. This is in contrast to the crime records over the preceding months.

“The foregoing is consequent upon the enhancement of the institutional capacity of the Nigeria Police to respond to internal security threats and undertake intelligence-led operations. The successes achieved are linked to ‘Operation Puff Adder’ which has been a very potent anti-crime vehicle of the Nigeria Police.”

Mohammed revealed that 10,860 ammunition of various descriptions and calibre were recovered while a total of 301 firearms including a rocket launcher, AK47 assault rifles, pistols, and locally made guns, were similarly recovered from criminal elements across the country.

The IG further explained that a total of 44 murder suspects were arrested during the period under review, including seven in FCT and six in Kano State.

“Furthermore, 176 suspected cultists were arrested across the country while 77 stolen vehicles were recovered by Operation Puff Adder operatives nationwide between 10th May and 14th June 2019, with the highest number of 29 in FCT,” the police boss pointed out.

On the efforts to improve the security architecture, he noted that the move to implement the concept of community policing was part of strategies aimed at changing the security situation in the country.

This, he said, would ensure the effective integration of the citizens into the police internal security framework, guarantee the concept of policing by public consent and build partnerships required to address peculiar communal threats.

Breaking: Ousted Egypt President Mohammed Morsi dies in court

0

Egypt’s former president Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood leader who rose to office in the country’s first free elections in 2012 and was ousted a year later by the military, has collapsed in court during a trial and died, state TV and his family said.

The 67-year-old had just addressed the court, speaking from the glass cage he is kept in during sessions and warning that he had “many secrets” he could reveal, a judicial official said.

A few minutes afterwards he collapsed, the official said.

State TV said Mr Morsi died before he could be taken to hospital.

Mr Morsi has been in prison undergoing multiple trials ever since the military ousted him in July 2013 and launched a massive crackdown on his Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists.

Monday’s session was part of a retrial, being held inside Cairo’s Tura Prison, on charges of espionage with the Palestinian Hamas militant group.

Mr Morsi’s son Ahmed confirmed the death of his father in a Facebook post.

Muslim Brotherhood
Mohammed Sudan, a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood in London, described Mr Morsi’s death as “premeditated murder”, saying that the former president was banned from receiving medicine or visits and there was little information about his health condition.

“He has been placed behind a glass cage (during trials). No one can hear him or know what is happening to him. He hasn’t received any visits for a months or nearly a year. He complained before that he doesn’t get his medicine. This is premeditated murder. This is slow death.”

The judicial official said Mr Morsi had asked to speak to the court during the session.

The judge permitted it, and Mr Morsi gave a speech saying he had “many secrets” that, if he told them, he would be released, but he added that he was not telling them because it would harm Egypt’s national security.

Mr Morsi was a longtime senior figure in Egypt’s most powerful Islamist group, the Muslim Brotherhood.

He was elected in 2012 in the country’s first free presidential election, held a year after an Arab Spring uprising ousted Egypt’s longtime authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak.

His Muslim Brotherhood also held a majority in parliament.

Military
The military, led by then-defence minister Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, ousted Mr Morsi after massive protests against the Brotherhood’s domination of power.

Mr El-Sissi was subsequently elected president and has waged a massive crackdown on Islamists and other opponents since.

Since Mr Morsi’s ousting, Egypt’s government has declared the Brotherhood a terrorist organisation and largely crushed it with a heavy crackdown.

Tens of thousands of Egyptians have been arrested since 2013, mainly Islamists but also secular activists who were behind the 2011 uprising.

He has been sentenced to 20 years after being convicted of ordering Brotherhood members to break up a protest against him, resulting in deaths.

An earlier death sentence was overturned. Multiple cases are still pending.

Mr Morsi was held in a special wing in the sprawling Tora detention complex nicknamed Scorpion Prison.

Rights groups say its poor conditions fall far below Egyptian and international standards.

BREAKING: Supreme Court to deliver judgment on Osun gov poll July 5

0

The Supreme Court on Monday fixed July 5 to deliver its judgment on the dispute arising from the September 2018 governorship election in Osun State.

The Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate in the said election, Ademola Adeleke, had filed four separate appeals before the apex court to challenge the Abuja Division Court of Appeal’s decision affirming the All Progressives Congress and its Governor Adegboyega Oyetola as the winner of the poll.

A seven-man panel of the apex court led by the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, has already heard one of the appeals on Monday.

The decision in the particular appeal filed by Adeleke is to be binding on two other appeals, while the fourth appeal will be heard and a judgment delivered on it separately.

The seven man-panel rose after hearing the first appeal on Monday.

The panel is to return shortly to conclude the hearing on the remaining appeals.

Other members of the panel led by Justice  Muhammad are Justices Kumai Akaahs, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Amiru Sanusi, Paul Galinje and Uwani Abba-Aji.

At the proceedings, the appellants’ lawyer, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), urged the apex court to uphold his clients’ appeal, upturn the judgment of the Court of Appeal and affirm that of the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which had upturned Oyetola’s election and declared Adeleke as the true winner of the poll.

But Oyetola’s lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), urged the court to dismiss the appeal and affirm the judgment of the Court of Appeal.

Counsel for the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mr. Yusuf Ali (SAN), and that for the APC, Olumide Olujinmi, also urged the apex court to dismiss the appeal.

The appellants are by their appeal challenging the May 9, 2019 majority judgment of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal which affirmed Oyetola’s victory at the September 2018 poll.

Dissatisfied with INEC’s declaration of Oyetola as the winner of the September 2018 governorship election, Adeleke and the PDP had filed a petition praying for an order nullifying the election and declaring them as the winner.

By a split decision of two-to-one, the three-man tribunal had in its verdict delivered on March 22, 2019 nullified the election of Oyetola and his party and declared Adeleke and his PDP as the duly elected.

But, on May 9, 2019, the Court of Appeal, in a four-to-one split decision of its five-man panel led by Justice Jummai Sankey, nullified the majority verdict of the tribunal.

Justice Sankey along with three other members of the panel, Justices Abubakar Yahaya, Isaiah Akeju, and Bitrus Sanga, adopted the majority judgments on the three appeals which went in favour of the APC and its candidate.

But another member of the panel, Justice George Mbaba, dissented from the majority judgments in the three appeals.

Justice Mbaba, went on to dismiss the three appeals filed by Oyetola, the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission and upheld the majority judgment of the tribunal which declared Adeleke and the PDP as the true winner.

Both PDP and Adeleke appealed to the Supreme Court against the majority decision of the Court of Appeal.

BREAKING: Boko Haram suicide bombing in Konduga kills 30

A triple suicide bombing by Boko Haram jihadists killed 17 people in the northeastern Nigerian town of Konduga, emergency services said Monday.

Three bombers detonated their explosives outside a location where football fans were watching a match on TV on Sunday evening, they said.

“The death toll from the attack has so far increased to 30. We have over 40 people injured,” Usman Kachalla, head of operations at the State Emergency Management Agency, said on Monday.

An earlier toll from the blasts, the bloodiest in months, gave 17 dead and 17 wounded.

The attack happened around 9:00 pm (1800 GMT), Ali Hassan, the leader of a self-defence group in the town, said.

The owner of the hall prevented one of the bombers from entering the packed venue.

“There was a heated argument between the operator and the bomber who blew himself up,” Hassan said by phone.

Two other bombers who had mingled among the crowd at a tea stall nearby also detonated their suicide vests.

Hassan said most of the victims were from outside the soccer viewing centre.

“Nine people died on the spot, including the operator, and 48 were injured,” Hassan said.

Kachala said the high number of fatalities was because emergency responders had been unable to reach the site of the blast quickly.

Nor were they equipped to deal with large numbers of wounded.

“Lack of an appropriate health facility to handle such huge emergency situation and the delay in obtaining security clearance to enable us to deploy from Maiduguri in good time led to the high death toll,” he said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the attack bore the imprint of Boko Haram, which has led a decade-long campaign to establish a hardline Islamic state in northeast Nigeria.

The last suicide attack was in April this year when two female suicide bombers blew themselves up outside the garrison town of Monguno, killing a soldier and a vigilante and injuring another soldier.

Konduga has been repeatedly targeted by suicide bombers from a Boko Haram faction loyal to longtime leader Abubakar Shekau.

The faction typically carries out suicide attacks against soft civilian targets such as mosques, markets and bus stations, often using young women and girls as bombers.

The jihadists are believed to sneak into the town from the group’s haven in nearby Sambisa forest.

Eight worshippers were killed when a suicide bomber attacked a mosque in the town last July.

Boko Haram insurgency has claimed 27,000 lives and forced some two million to flee their homes.

The violence has spilled into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting the formation of a regional military coalition to battle the insurgents.

Israel renames Golan Heights after Donald Trump

0

Israel’s prime minister has renamed a settlement after his favourite world leader: Donald Trump.

The 30-year-old settlement in the Israel-controlled Golan Heights is currently known as Beruchim and has a population of 10 people, mostly elderly immigrants from the former Soviet Union.

It is around 12 miles from the border with Syria and surrounded by land mines and high yellow grass.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet has agreed in principle to rename the community Ramat Trump (Hebrew for Trump Heights), hoping this will encourage more Israelis to move there.

The move is also to thank the US president for his recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the territory in March.

Nigerian Immigration commences issuance of residence permits

0

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) will in the next three months commence the issuance of Residence Permits to foreign nationals in the country.

The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Muhammad Babbandede during the passing out ceremony of the 44th Superintendent Basic Course for 396 trained officers at the Immigration Training School, Kano said any foreigner who fails to secure his or her permit by the end of the exercise risks deportation.

“In the face of global reality coupled with the insurgency and other serious security threats, Nigeria must take all necessary steps in protecting its sovereignty for the citizens to go about their lawful businesses in peace.”.

“The Service has taken serious steps in ensuring that, “our borders are protected and Nigeria becomes safer for business and encourage the inflow of foreign direct investments without undermining national security,” said the Immigration Boss

He said they have so far trained 611 officers in Modern Border Management in Kano alone, adding that the Service is currently training another batch of 1000 officers.

The Immigration boss also stated that” the Federal Government has approved the establishment of e-border with the upgrade of passenger clearance system, installation of MIDAS, establishment of the border patrol to FOB and the ongoing Technology Building”.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Bar. Georgina Ehuriah, said, “the Nigerian Immigration Service has remained very committed in staff training and discipline and so I assume that the Cadets that are passing out into the officers’ corps of the NIS must have duly paid the prize in character and conduct to be so admitted into the officers’ corps.”

The Commandant of the Kano Immigration School, CIS Rasheed Segun Adegoke said the School has witnessed unprecedented capacity development of infrastructure and training of manpower.

He added that they have since reintroduced Field-Trip for Cadets in line with the new validated curriculum.
