Bandits Kill Seven Traders in Benue, Community Accuses Government of Neglect

0

Five traders have reportedly been slain and seven others injured in a new attack by armed bandits at Yanriwa Market in Benue State’s Kwande local government area.
According to information obtained, five people were killed when armed attackers broke into the market at around 3 p.m. while vendors were conducting business and started shooting intermittently.

After the 2024 Christmas Day attack, which claimed the lives of more than 20 farmers, a local resident named Lawrence Akerigba bemoaned in an interview with Leadership Newspaper that the federal government had broken its pledge to provide more security personnel to the towns.

“As I am talking to you, that road is no longer passable,” he said, referring to the herdsmen’s blockade of the Anwase road, the scene of the Christmas attack and killings.
According to Akerigba, the herdsmen’s actions have caused the majority of the area’s churches, schools, and marketplaces to close.

Nothing of that like has been done so far, he said. The government has left us to our own devices.

“The herdsmen’s attack took place in Liev 1 at Usambe in Ikyurav ya at approximately 3 noon.

However, when the herders entered the market while people were buying and selling and began shooting at them, the fun of selling turned violent.

Five individuals were immediately killed, and seven others were hurt and transported to the hospital. Searches are still being conducted for a few more missing persons.

Because they are limited in number, the security personnel on the ground are not making much of an impact despite their best efforts to stop the attacks.

Pope Francis’ Burial: World Leaders Flock to Rome

Millions of people, including world leaders, flocked to St. Peter’s Square on Saturday to attend Pope Francis’s Requiem Mass, which served as his final farewell.
Pope Francis passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, according to reports. He was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in the Flores neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In addition to some 250 Cardinals, Patriarchs, Archbishops, Bishops, priests, consecrated religious, and laypeople, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, presided over the Requiem Mass.

Cardinal Re covered several of the highlights of his extraordinary and demanding twelve years of Petrine Ministry in his homily. These included his closeness to the people, his spontaneous deeds right up until the end, and—above all—his abiding love for the Church.
“We are here in great numbers to pray for Pope Francis, believing that God will accept him into the depths of His love, spiritually united with all of Christianity.” In his lectures and private meetings, Pope Francis would end by asking people to remember to pray for him.

“Now, we beg you to pray for us, Pope Francis. May you bless the Church, bless Rome, and grant us the blessing of the entire world from heaven, just as you did last Sunday from this Basilica’s balcony in a final embrace with all of God’s people as well as with all of humanity—that humanity that sincerely seeks the truth and holds high the torch of hope,” Cardina Re said.

In a clandestine operation in Asaba, Delta State, the Department of State Services (DSS) retrieved 50 AK-47 weapons, six pump-action shotguns, and over 3,000 rounds of ammunition.

An Itsekiri serving in the British Army (name withheld) was also detained by the agency after he allegedly obtained the weapons at Collins’ request.

The principal suspect, a Major in the British Army, and numerous colleagues were arrested by DSS Delta Command agents Friday night in connection with the illicit weaponry shipment, according to multiple DSS sources.

His colleagues were captured in Asaba, while the British army officer was reportedly stopped in Lagos just before he boarded a flight to the UK.

“An Itsekiri in the British Army is accused of obtaining weapons and ammunition at the request of one Collins in order to cause disturbances in Warri,” the source said.

“” Agents from the DSS Delta Command captured the arms dealer and a number of colleagues after a clandestine encounter in Delta State, close to Asaba. They confiscated more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition, six pump-action shotguns, and more than 50 AK-47 rifles.

“” Soon after, the British Major attempted to enter Nigeria’s border on his way to the UK, but was stopped by DSS officers in Lagos.

“DSS now has possession of all accused. Anyone found to be planning tribal clashes will be held accountable after the DSS conducts a thorough and open inquiry.

Opponents of the Warri Federal Constituency’s ward and polling unit demarcation are suspected of obtaining the weapons.

In relation to the issue, a strong traditional ruler is also being covertly examined.

Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo ethnic nationalities have already been shown the report by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the ward and polling unit demarcation in the Warri Federal Constituency.

During the presentation in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, State Resident Electoral Commissioner Etekamba Umoren, the INEC chairman’s representative, stated that the Supreme Court’s December 22, 2022, ruling, which mandated that the Commission carry out the exercise, was the reason behind the new ward and polling unit delineation fieldwork.

On behalf of the Itsekiri, Ijaw, and Urhobo ethnic groups, respectively, Chief Victor Okumagba, Dr. Andrew Igban, and Dr. Joe Bisina received copies of the demarcation report.

The chairman of INEC stated in his remarks that this was the sixth time the Commission had met with the stakeholders since the ruling of the Supreme Court, which ordered the Commission to conduct the exercise in the three local government districts of the Warri Federal Constituency.

Since the Commission was prepared to accept the report as a working document in accordance with the Supreme Court’s order, he invited the interested parties to read it and reply accordingly.

But tensions in the state have been heightened by the proposed demarcation, as several individuals and groups are against the exercise.

Many Ijaw youths recently demonstrated in favor of the exercise by marching to the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Selected from the communities of Gbaramatu, Egbema, Diebiri, and Isaba, they claimed that the INEC delineation process was reasonable and consistent with the ruling of the Supreme Court.

They praised INEC for what they described as a transparent procedure, claiming that it concluded years of Ijaw political marginalization in the constituency.

Ashiru Hits Out at Gov Sani, Labels APC’s Handling of ASUU Strike a Planned Failure

Isa Ashiru, a former governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, has called Governor Uba Sani’s All Progressives Congress (APC) administration a failure.
Due to Governor Sani’s noncompliance with the agreement signed with the union, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Kaduna State University chapter reportedly went on indefinite strike on Thursday.
Governor Sani’s administration broke several agreements, including withholding salaries, pensions, and non-payment of promotion arrears, according to the notice of strike letter signed by the union’s chairman, Peter Adamu, and secretary, Peter Waziri.

“The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), KASU branch would like to inform the public that the National Executive Council (NEC) has granted the branch’s congress’s request to resume the suspended indefinite strike action, effective today, April 24, 2025,” wrote the statement. The following are the matters at issue, for the record: 1. Remittance of all salaries withheld (May through September 2022, among others); 2. Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) received as of 2026; 3. Disbursement of SIWES supervision allowances and promotion arrears; 4. Group Life Assurance and other benefits to departed members; 5. Pensions not being remitted from 2009 to 2019; 6. The 25% and 35% wage award being implemented; 7. The restoration of university independence.

“The Government of Kaduna State has failed to uphold its commitments and honor the agreement reached by both parties, which is the reason for the indefinite strike action.”

ASUU’s strike, according to Ashiru’s statement on Friday, was a verdict on Sani’s administration. He pledged his support for ASUU’s industrial action.

In addition to being a labor movement, the ASUU-KASU indefinite strike is a scathing indictment on the APC-led Kaduna government. unfulfilled promises, underpaid pensions, and withheld wages. This government has disregarded education. There is enough.

Our professors, students, and institutions have been neglected, abandoned, and reduced to shadows for years. This is a systemic, intentional, and shameful failure on the part of APC. This is not the role of governance. It is treachery.

“ASUU-KASU has our utmost solidarity. The future of Kaduna depends on the fight for high-quality education. It’s time for people to stand up and declare that ineptitude will never again be used as a reason to sacrifice their children,” he stated.

NNPP, Kwankwaso Considering Moves: Join APC or Team Up with Atiku, El-Rufai

Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) are currently considering their political choices, with the potential of joining Atiku Abubakar’s opposition alliance or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Like in the 2023 elections, Kwankwaso and the NNPP would not run separately in the 2027 polls, according to a trustworthy source who spoke to Punch on condition of anonymity.
I can affirm that Kwankwaso and the NNPP would not run as independent candidates like they did in the elections of 2023. The source revealed that they are considering joining President Tinubu’s APC or joining the coalition led by Atiku, el-Rufai, and others, depending on the political climate at the moment.

Ahead of the upcoming general election, a number of political parties and actors are forming strategic partnerships in a rapidly changing political landscape.

In response to mounting rumors, Ladipo Johnson, the National Publicity Secretary for the NNPP, stated in an interview with Punch that the party was in fact taking these strategic choices into consideration.

As for the NNPP, he said, “Well, let me just say this: based on our own experience as the Kwankwasiyya movement, we tend to wait till midterm. In this administration, the midterm will be on May 29. Two years have passed, and two more years remain. We anticipate that appropriate politicking will start at that point.

Thus, it is true that we have been speaking. I did, however, tell you at the time that I did not want to name the movements, organizations, or individuals that are speaking with us by name. Now, that remains the case.

“As you may remember, there have been numerous articles in newspapers and online suggesting that Senator Kwankwaso is getting close to joining the APC and all that. That is simply how the game works. For self-serving reasons, some people are promoting or furthering that narrative.

However, the fact remains that they will start to hear from us pretty soon. We shall share our actions with our supporters. There are essentially three options available: either we make an alliance with the ruling party, we establish a coalition with Atiku and others, or we stay in the NNPP and continue with those who have supported us throughout. Not that any of these are true at this time. However, these three fundamental possibilities are possible.

JAMB Delists Four CBT Centers, Nabs 27 Impersonators

27 people were arrested for impersonation during the current 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), according to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Referred to the Nigeria Police, the suspects would face swift legal action.
Four Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers that failed to adhere to JAMB’s strict technical and ethical criteria were also delisted, the organization revealed.

Here are the delisted centers:

Off Hadejia Road, Kano, Kano State, behind Sheshe Supermarket, Adventure Associate.
Naibawa, Kano, Kano State, Zaria Road, Saadatu Rimi College of Education.
Tambuwal, 96km Sokoto-Jega Road, Centre 1, Penta M & F Technical Services Ltd.
Center 2, 96km Sokoto-Jega Road, Tambuwal, is home to Penta M & F Technical Services Ltd?
“Although JAMB applauds the 883 centers that have shown outstanding performance, it categorically warns that any center that does not meet ethical or technical standards, regardless of ownership, will be blacklisted,” JAMB spokesperson Fabian Benjamin said in a statement released Friday evening.

It has been directed that candidates who were initially assigned to the affected centers reprint their exam slips as soon as possible to obtain the most recent information about their new exam dates and locations.

In the event that this caused any inconvenience, the exam board expressed regret. But the board has said that if candidates don’t reprint their slips, it won’t accept any explanations.

As of Friday, April 25, 2025, more than 900,000 candidates out of 2,083,600 registered nationwide had successfully finished the UTME, according to JAMB.

The board also discussed an incident at the Caleb University CBT center where some candidates were prevented from entering the venue because they were wearing hijabs. This activity was described by JAMB as “unauthorized,” and they confirmed that it was immediately fixed.

A security guard who was overly enthusiastic was the cause of this mistaken conduct.

We sincerely apologize to the impacted candidates and applaud the center’s and the university’s leadership for their swift action in ensuring that no candidate was unfairly disadvantaged, JAMB said.

The testing organization reaffirmed its pledge to provide an equitable and open examination process to all applicants across the country.

Reasons Behind Possible Two-Year Ban on Real Madrid’s Vinicius by FIFA

FIFA is presently looking into Vinicius Jr., a Brazilian winger for Real Madrid, and he may face a two-year ban because of a reported conflict of interest.
Both domestically and on the continent, Vinicius and his Real Madrid team have had a difficult season thus far. In addition to finishing second in the Spanish La Liga, they were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League.
At Real Madrid, the Brazilian football player has been having a great season. In 311 games across all competitions, he has 105 goals and 79 assists.
But because of his on-field conduct, which has periodically come under fire, FIFA is now looking more closely at his circumstances.

MARCA claims that Vinicius’ ownership interests in a number of professional football teams have drawn criticism for potentially violating FIFA’s global rules.

The FIFA Ethics Committee received a complaint from Tiberis Holding Do Brasil, a Brazilian corporation, on April 7 that sparked this investigation.

The ethical regulations, which forbid players from owning professional teams directly or indirectly, may have been broken, according to the lawsuit.

Vinicius reportedly owns shares in the Portuguese team Alverca and the Brazilian squad Athletic Club de São João del Rei.

Should Vinicius be found guilty, he might have to leave these clubs or be suspended for up to two years, among other serious repercussions.

Burna Boy Alleges Efforts by Nigerian Music Industry Gatekeepers to Break Him

Grammy winner Burna Boy has said that gatekeepers in the Nigerian music industry did all in their power to impede his career’s advancement.

He revealed this in response to a widely shared excerpt from a recent interview in which seasoned music producer Obi Asika asserted that Burna Boy’s development was thwarted by some gatekeepers in the Nigerian music industry, but he rose above them and became well-known worldwide.

Burna Boy said, “This is not even half of the story,” in the Instagram comments section of a blog that shared the video. To break me, they did everything they could. Still, they are making every effort. LOL. All they did, however, was start this unquenchable fire that will burn them forever.

When his breakthrough song “Like To Party” from his debut album “L.I.F.E (Leaving an Impact for Eternity)” was released, Burna Boy became a nationwide sensation.

The years that followed saw him reduced to the status of an underground artist due to failures in his career.

However, his career took off on a global scale when his breakthrough single, “Ye,” from the highly regarded album “Outside,” was released.

Burna Boy was once again patronized by Nigerian music leaders and fans after his breakthrough abroad.

Over the past several years, he has been the most popular African touring performer.

‘Some Forces Converted APC Into A Structure Not In Best Interest Of Nigeria’ – Ex-minister, Ikimi

0

Former Foreign Affairs Minister Tom Ikimi, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said that after the party was created, some forces took control of it and changed it into a structure that was not beneficial to the nation.
According to reports, Ikimi, a national leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said this during a meeting of stakeholders in Benin City, Edo State, on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
“The APC was expected to serve as an alternative to the former ruling PDP at the time of its formation,” he said, adding that the goal was to recreate the two-party system that is in place in the United States and Britain.

Ikimi asserts that the APC is currently in a desperate attempt to eliminate the opposition party and establish a one-party dictatorship.
According to his judgment, the APC was taken over by some elements and changed into a structure that was not optimal for our country, he stated. All of us have seen their operations thus far, as well as the catastrophe we are currently experiencing.

“The APC is now a group of individuals with only selfish interests.

Even with the serious challenges our nation is currently facing under the APC, it appears that all that is being offered to us are frantic attempts to dismantle the PDP in order to turn the nation into a one-party dictatorship. I am convinced that the PDP’s survival is the only viable path ahead for our nation at this time.

Ikimi spoke on the party’s current problem and bemoaned the way that individual goals were undermining the PDP’s power and unity in the South-South.

He said the fierce attack was the reason Delta State PDP members defected to the APC.

“This stakeholders meeting is really important,” he continued. It makes it very evident to the nation that Edo State’s PDP is robust and active. Lately, the South South Region has been under heavy APC onslaught.

According to news reports, our Delta State Governor defected to the APC, and his predecessor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, also defected to the APC. I am aware of the steps we took in the PDP to award our party’s ticket to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and to provide the vice presidential ticket to his predecessor.

“At this point, all I can say is that it is really too early to feel too sorry for yourself. It would be accurate to state that Delta residents have not yet spoken up in remembrance of the PDP’s crushing defeat in 2023 to Senator Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who was running without a governor at the time.

Peter Obi: N20,000 Is Paid to Youths to Cause Confusion Across Nigeria

Some unidentified individuals, according to Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential contender, pay Nigerian youths as little as N20,000 and N40,000 in an attempt to confuse the country’s electoral system.

According to Obi, who was speaking at John Hopkins University in the United States on the topic of “Politics and Change in Nigeria,” young people have been tricked into fighting against others who genuinely care about them.

He reminded young Nigerians that collecting money, especially peanuts, will ruin their promising future and that they should look for better methods to include transactional politics for the benefit of both themselves and the country.

“People pay them to create confusion,” Obi stated. “As I stand here now, look at social media. All of the people who are being paid N20,000 to N40,000 a month to abuse you are young people who are fighting for their lives.”

According to the former governor of Anambra State, “you can get it right in Nigeria’s transactional politics, even though I am almost 60 and only have a few years left.”
