Tiv, Jukun Crisis: Taraba residents praise army for reopening roads

0

Residents of Taraba State say they can now heave a sigh of relief following the reopening of roads linking Takum to Wukari and Takum to Katsina-Ala among others.

They believe the development will boost the economy and agricultural activities in the areas, following months of the failed seizure of hostilities between the Tivs and Jukuns.

Some motorists and residents of Southern Taraba said they can move freely on the roads unlike when they had to go through Garba-Chede and Mutum-Biyu routes to Wukari. “If we must go through these roads, then we have to employ the services of security agencies to guide us all through.

US removes Cameroon from trade pact over alleged ‘persistent’ human rights violations

0

The US is cutting Cameroon from a trade pact over allegations of human rights violations.

President Donald Trump said the West African nation failed to address concerns over its “persistent gross violations of internationally recognized human rights” allegedly committed by Cameroon’s security forces.
The US also cut more than $17 million in security aid and support to Cameroon in February over concerns about its human rights record.
In a letter addressed to Congress on Thursday, Trump cited accusations of torture and extrajudicial killings of citizens by the country’s military as reasons for removing Cameroon from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
AGOA helps sub-Saharan countries improve trade ties with the US. Eligible countries must meet criteria including a good human rights record to benefit from the trade.
“The US government remains deeply concerned about persistent gross violations of human rights being committed by the Cameroonian government against its own citizens,” Deputy US Trade Representative C.J. Mahoney said in a statement.
Cameroon is reeling under the impact of an Anglophone revolt that began in its English-speaking provinces in 2016 after residents complained of being marginalized by the largely Francophone government.
Security forces also have been in a standoff with separatists in these areas, and both sides have been accused of killing and torturing citizens in the crossfire.
Cameroon’s Minister Delegate at the Ministry of External Relations Felix Mbayu claimed the sanctions were not linked to its human rights record.
“The simple truth is that the US is unhappy with a certain stance we take with China,” he said.
In February, China wrote off some of Cameroon’s debts. China also is carrying out projects in Cameroon to forge better ties with the government. Unlike China and other world powers, the US was not a major trade partner, Mbayu said.
“The government has no move to make; we have other partners like China, Russia and Singapore who are ready to do business with us… We have no reaction to the US,” Mbayu told CNN.
“The least of our worry now is about the AGOA issue. By the way, it is a very small part of Cameroon’s relationship with the United States,” he added.
The minister estimated Cameroon’s exports to the US under the trade legislation are $5 million, mostly consisting of agricultural and petroleum products he said the US “cannot do without.”
In a statement reaffirming its commitment to West African nation despite the sanctions, the US Embassy in Cameroon valued the country’s export to the US at $220 million in 2018. It added that more than a quarter of the exports came off the AGOA legislation with 90 percent from petroleum exports.

Boko Haram: Lagos is safe, Army reaffirms

By Michael Attah

The Nigerian Army says, Lagos state and its environs remain safe and free from Boko Haram elements. The assurance came following the arrest of 8 suspects in connection to a foiled Boko Haram attack launched at a University in Lagos state two weeks ago.

General Officer Commanding (GOC), 81 Division Maj.-Gen. Olu Irefin who confirmed the arrest said the suspects who admitted having ties to Boko Haram have been transferred to the Army Headquarters in Abuja for further investigation.

Also announcing that Operation Crocodile Smile IV has kicked off, Gen. Irefi stated that there is solid security architecture in place as he assured residents of Ogun and Lagos state of their safety.

He said: “We have started on the background. We have gone for simulation with all the security agencies involved in the Exercise.

“The exercise proper would kill off on November 19. It was supposed to start on November 11 but was shifted because of the NA’s Small Arms Firing Exercise holding between November 11 and 15 at Ibadan.

“There is no cause for alarm within 81 Division’s area of responsibility. We have been on top of our game on this Boko Haram issue. We are not sleeping and the people are assured of their safety throughout this period and beyond.

“Citizens can go about their lawful duties without panic because security agencies are doing a lot to protect them.”

Consequently, the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Zubairu Muazu stated that there is no cause for alarm.

“Lagos is safe. There is no Boko Haram scare and the people should not be afraid. We are not sleeping,” he said.

Iraqi protesters attack Iranian consulate in Karbala

0

Dozens of Iraqi protesters have attacked the Iranian consulate in the Shia holy city of Karbala, in an apparent sign of increasing anger against Tehran’s perceived interference in Iraqi politics.

Witnesses cited by news agencies said protesters scaled the concrete barriers surrounding the building late on Sunday, bringing down an Iranian flag and replacing it with one of Iraq.

Security forces fired in the air to disperse the crowd, who threw stones and burned tires around the building on a street corner in Karbala, south of the capital, Baghdad.

There were no immediate reports of casualties in the incident, which came amid ongoing protests in Baghdad and majority-Shia provinces in the south demanding an overhaul of the political system.

The demonstrations are rooted in long-standing grievances over poor governance, official corruption and lack of economic opportunity, but have since expanded into demands for sweeping changes and an overhaul of the country’s political system, which was established after a US-led invasion in 2003.

The demonstrators have directed their ire at a class of elite leaders whom they accuse of pillaging the oil-rich country’s wealth while the population grows poorer.

Protesters have also directed their rage at neighbouring Iran and the powerful Iraqi Shia militias tied to it.

In his weekly sermon, top Iraqi Shia leader Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani warned of “civil conflict, chaos and destruction” if the security forces or paramilitary groups crack down on the protests, while also giving an apparent nod to protesters who say the government is being manipulated from abroad, above all by Iran.

“No person or group, no side with a particular view, no regional or international actor may seize the will of the Iraqi people and impose its will on them,” he said on Friday.

Al-Sistani’s remarks, which can usually make or break a government decision in Iraq, came a day after comments by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“I seize this opportunity to tell those who care about Iraq … to remedy insecurity as their priority,” Khamenei said. The supreme leader blamed the United States its allies for spreading “insecurity and turmoil” in Iraq and Lebanon, where similar demonstrations have been ongoing for weeks, urging anti-government protesters in both countries to seek changes lawfully.

The US and Iran enjoy significant political and military influence in Iraq, and protesters have accused the political elite of being subservient to one or the other without concern for the needs of ordinary people.

The protests, which began more than a month ago, have often turned violent, with Iraqi security forces opening fire and protesters torching government buildings and headquarters of Iranian-backed militias. More than 250 people have been killed in the security crackdown.

Feisal Istrabadi, a former Iraqi ambassador to the United Nations and director of the Center for the Study of the Middle East at Indiana University, warned the situation could deteriorate.

“I am very much afraid that is what’s coming next,” he told Al Jazeera, saying it is “nearly impossible” for the current leaders in Iraq to quell the ongoing protests.

Ortom calls for the arrest of Miyetti Allah leader days after ‘apology’

0

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has called for the arrest of the leader of the Fulani Socio-cultural organization Miyetti Allah. The governor who made the call today barely after ten days of an opened apologies by the national secretary of the group to the governor over the killings and attacks on Benue people by Herdsmen.

The Governor called on the immediate arrest of the National President of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Abdullahi Bodejo, describing a statement he made on RUGA as a threat to the country.

Ortom made the call in a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase.

Bodejo had been quoted in some dailies to have threatened that governors that refused to establish cattle colonies, also known as RUGA settlements, would not know peace in their states.

“…You are a governor and you want to enjoy peace in your state, you don’t need any long meeting, just create a particular area for the Fulani and equip them with modern amenities,” Bodejo was quoted as saying.

Ortom in his reaction described the utterance by Bodejo as inciting and direct invitation for anarchy.

The governor said, “No group should be above the law to be dictating to states on how to accord preference to it at the expense of other Nigerians.

“We call for the arrest and prosecution of the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore president for persistently making statements capable of stirring crises in the country.”

Ortom added that the statement by Bodejo was not only a threat to peace but also a prelude to another round of attacks on Benue.

“They carried out their threat on the eve of 2018 New Year when their armed militia murdered 73 innocent persons, destroyed property worth millions of naira and displaced over 500,000 people in Guma and Logo local government areas.

“As a state, Benue will not take the current threat by Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore lightly. The law of the land is sacrosanct and must be obeyed by everyone. Any individual or group who wants to breed animals in the state should be prepared to ranch them.”

Also at a thanksgiving service on Sunday, Ortom reiterated the need for herdsmen in the state to be ready to embrace the anti-open grazing law.

The thanksgiving service was organised in his honour by the Independent Print Publishers Association of Nigeria at the Chapel of Grace, Government House, Makurdi.

The governor maintained that nobody was above the law and no group of persons or persons would be allowed to dictate how to govern the state.

He appreciated the president and members of the association for honouring him and promised to keep the flag of the IPPAN flying.

In his sermon, Evangelist Michael Ewache of the Glory of His Majesty, Makurdi, said God approves leaders.

“If God has made a choice, everyone needs to follow because no one has the power to object to the choice of God,” he said.

Some people planning to kill my aides, kidnap me, says Ortom

0

Gov Samuel Ortom of Benue State has alleged that he once heard that some people are planning to kill his security aides, kidnap him and dismember his body parts by parts until he dies.

He raised the alarm during a Special Thanksgiving Service organised in his honour by the Independent Print-Media Publishers Association of Nigeria (IPPAN), at the Chapel of Grace, Government House, Makurdi on Sunday.

Ortom also prayed against all negative tendencies often believed to deter progress in the Government House and the state.

“Since my arrival, I have dedicated a special time on daily basis to be with God because He works in miraculous ways; those working against me are wasting their time and will never succeed.

“I have dismantled the devils in Benue Government House; they cannot come near us again. The devil does not have a place in our government house again.

“I am not afraid of any human being. I once heard that some people are planning to kill my security aides, kidnap me and dismember me parts by parts until I die, but I have told them that God will not allow that to happen.

“I have brought myself close to God; there is no turning back. When people plan against me, l will always floor them because God is with me,” he said.

Ortom appealed to Benue people to exercise patience and judge his performance at the end of his second term, pointing out that he had already executed projects and policies that would benefit generations yet unborn.

“We are laying foundations that generations yet unborn will benefit. We appreciate what we have done so far; we are not rushing into making policies, we are taking our time.

“Even now, we have done series of projects, carried out an amnesty programme and implemented the anti-open grazing law. In Benue, herdsmen must obey the law and nobody is above the law,” he said.

Buhari rejects West Africa-EU free trade agreement

0

While the UK prepares to leave one of the world’s largest trading blocs, Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria, is declining to join one in the first place.

Nigerian President Buhari is yet to sign the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), which aims to establish a free trade area between 16 West African countries (and Mauritania) and the European Union.
in a statement delivered in the Nigerian capital Abuja Thursday, the Nigerian president said he didn’t sign to protect national industries and the country’s youth population.
“Our industries cannot compete with the more efficient and highly technologically driven industries in Europe.”
“We are not enthusiastic about signing the EPA because of our largely youthful population,” he said.
The EPA plans to remove trade restrictions between ECOWAS (Economic Community of West Africa States) and the EU. The partnership covers goods as well as cooperation on development.
West Africa is the EU’s top trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa. The EU is West Africa’s largest trading relationship.

Church staff arrested for blackmailing female members with their nudes

0

A church protocol officer in the habit of luring church girls to hotels and taking their nude photographs which he subsequently used to blackmail them in exchange for money, has been arrested in Lagos.

The suspect, Victor Duru, a Madonna University drop out, was arrested in #Surulere on Thursday, after repeatedly blackmailing his church member and girlfriend.

One of his girlfriends reported him at RRS Headquarter. Duru, 23, was investigated and discovered to have been using the nude photographs to blackmail her in exchange for money.

It was also discovered that the suspect was keeping the nude photographs of other girls while lodging them in hotels and his apartment in #Ijeshatedo.

Sources revealed that the suspect obtained the nude photographs of the victim with the assistance of a third party at gunpoint, while there is a growing suspicion that Duru also laced the drink of another girl with sleeping drug.

The suspect in his disclosure stated “she was my girlfriend. We are same church member. We have been dating for almost two years. We were having break up issues. .

So, I invited her to an hotel in Ijeshatedo. I excused myself and invited my friend, Frank Obinna, to meet me in the hotel. Obinna and I had this planned together.

The gun was a toy gun. He entered the hotel room and held the lady at gun point. I told her to cooperate, naked her for Obinna to take her pictures. We took seven different shots of her in the nude with my phone. I discharged her that day. This was in September.

By early October, 2019, I called her to give me N80,000 or I would throw the nude photographs online. She was only able to offer me N10,000.Last week, Obinna called her again and requested for N40,000. .

She promised to send something. She was a wonderful girl that had been assisting me before the problem started. On many occasions, she has assisted me financially.”
