I’m getting better under Ancelotti – Alex Iwobi

0

Alex Iwobi says he is “getting better every day” under the tutelage of Carlo Ancelotti – and the forward is keen to “get in on the act”.

He insists the blend of Ancelotti’s individual coaching and the decorated manager’s preference for narrow wingers are combining to unlock the player’s attacking talent.

“I have grown up playing on the left or as a number 10 and he has combined the two (in one position),” Iwobi told evertonfc.com.

“It feels natural and I am comfortable in the system, it has been bringing the best from me in training.

“The way he (Ancelotti) tells me to come inside is helping my body position, so I receive the ball in a better place (on the field).

“It means my first touch takes me where I should go and I can come infield at the right time to be free and able to turn and play forward.

“He is helping me a lot and I am benefiting in training.

“I feel I am getting better every day with him.”

Iwobi missed six weeks after injuring his hamstring against former club Arsenal back in December and confessed his period out “felt like a year”.

Iwobi’s layoff around the turn of the year represented his longest spell of inactivity since playing the first of 149 games for Arsenal in October 2015.

“It was the worst time,” said Iwobi. “For people who have long-term injuries, Lord knows how they feel. I was out for four weeks (before he could rejoin first-team training) and it felt like a year. So long.

“It feels like punishment. But it is something you have to do and I was so hungry to be back as soon as possible.”

“I love playing football.

“It is a licence to go and express myself with the ball. There is pressure in life but when I am on the pitch, I feel I can express myself through football.”

“That is how I’ve felt since I was a kid.”

Iwobi signed a five-year deal when he joined Everton from boyhood club Arsenal on transfer deadline day back in August.

He has made 21 appearances and scored on his first two starts for the Club.

Boko Haram Ideology: Inter-faith clerics embark on church-mosque love campaign, solicits support for military

0

In a bid to defeat Boko Haram ideology while also canvassing support for the Nigerian military, an inter-faith group is embarking on love campaigns to churches and mosques across the country.

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organizations for Peace (NIFROP) made this known at the end of a 21-day prayer and fast for the unity and peace of Nigeria at the Unity Fountain, Abuja.

In a communique co-signed by Bishop Prince J Madaki, Bishop Lawrence Ngene, Sheik Ahmad Jiddah Umar and Sheik Ja,afaru Kantoma, the group said this direction is divine and must be strictly adhered to.

According to the clerics, the campaign is geared towards frustrating the agents of destabilization using Boko Haram to cause a religious war in the country.

The group further revealed that these terrorists have nothing to do with Christianity or Islam, hence Nigerians must enlightened.

NIFROP, however, advised every cleric in the country to join the campaign, going all out to preach the gospel of love and unity of Nigeria.

Read full communique below:

Introduction:

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organization for Peace is an organization comprising of Christian and Muslim faithful that have elected to come together under one umbrella to pray and intercede for the common good of Nigeria.

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organizations for Peace since inception several years ago has been in the vanguard of preaching peaceful coexistence in Nigeria, and this much has seen to the convocation of seminars and religious programmes that have brought adherents of different religions in the country under one roof and one voice for the peace and unity of Nigeria.

The Background:

The resurgence of the activities of the Boko Haram group in Borno state elicited concern from critical stakeholders, and this saw to the organization of a 21-day prayer and fasting programme by the National Inter-Faith and Religious Organizations for Peace for Gods intervention in making Nigerian a united and peaceful country in an atmosphere of love and tranquility.

The Issues:

During the 21 day prayer and fasting programme religious faithful prayed and fasted fervently for God’s intervention in the crisis in North-East Nigeria and especially Borno State that has witnessed a resurgence of the activities of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

That the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari have seen to the defeat Boko Haram and the recent acts of insecurity in Borno State is being politically motivated by enemies of the country.

Our Stance:

At the end of the 21-day prayers and fasting programme the clerics in unity herby make the following declarations:

That the recent activities of bandits and kidnappers in some parts of the north are the handiwork of evil men and women and desperate politicians who find it difficult to give up their inordinate ambitions after a convincing loss at the polls.

That the recent calls for the sack of the hardworking and patriotic Service Chiefs in the country are the handiwork of coup plotters and politicians desperate to destabilize the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari due to his stance on leading Nigeria with the fear of God.

That those that have looted the commonwealth of Nigeria in times past are angry to reverse the gains made in the war against insurgency so that they can gain control of the country through the back door.

That the act of booing President Muhammadu Buhari during his recent visit to Borno state is highly condemnable and the handiwork of the political leadership in Borno State that are not happy with the efforts of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in bringing to an end the activities of the Boko Haram group in North East.

Resolutions:

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organizations for Peace as a result of the forgoing at this moment make the following resolutions:

That every cleric in Nigeria should go all out to preach the gospel of love and unity of Nigeria, as stated in the book of Romans 8:35-39 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake, we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

That the Pastors and Imams who attended the 21 days of fasting and prayers should make it a duty to pray every Friday and Sunday for President Muhammadu Buhari and his cabinet to lead the nation without fear and the wisdom of God as stated in the book of Luke Chapter 1vs 50. “AND HIS MERCY IS UPON GENERATION AFTER GENERATION TOWARD THOSE WHO FEAR HIM.” And in Chapter 9 vs. 19 in the Holy Koran, “Have you made the providing of water for the pilgrim and the maintenance of al-Masjid al-Haram equal to the deeds of one who believes in Allah and the Last Day and strives in the cause of Allah? They are not equal in the sight of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.”

That all Clerics in Nigeria should continue to pray for the leadership of the Nigerian military and other security agencies defending the nation from terrorists and their sponsors as exemplified in the book of 1 Timothy 2:1-2 – “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”

Conclusion:

The under listed conclusion were reached:

That Christian’s and Muslim faithful should embark on a campaign against the agents of destabilization using Boko Haram or any other group’s action to cause a religious war in the country.

That a strong message should be sent out to all and sundry that Boko Haram, kidnappers, bandits, and all terrorists’ criminal groups have nothing to do with Christianity or Islam and should be ignored.

That the love of God and the love of our neighbors should continue to guide and lead us to the path of righteousness.

That a state of emergency should be declared in Borno State and any other state in Nigeria whose political leadership compromises its responsibility in providing security for the citizens.

That the leadership of the National Inter-Faith and Religious Organizations for Peace pleads with President Muhammadu Buhari as a father to forgive Governor Babagana Zullum and every other person responsible for the ugly incident in Borno State because to err is human but to forgive is divine.

That may these ungrateful elements find peace in the sight of God and turn from their evil intentions and deeds.

Lagos to convert Neighbourhood Watch to Amotekun

0

The Lagos House of Assembly on Thursday commenced the process of amending the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency Law 2019 to accommodate a section for Amotekun Corps.

The House took the first and second reading of the bill at plenary on Thursday.

The Amotekun Corps is to take charge of security in borders, forest, highways, nooks and crannies of the state to ensure protection against hoodlums, kidnappers, cattle rustlers, bandits etc.

The Corps can also collaborate with other security platforms in other neighbouring states to ensure strengthening of security network in Lagos and such other states.

Senate introduces bill to create agency for repentant Boko Haram members

0

The Senate on Thursday began moves to establish an agency that would see to the rehabilitation, deradicalisation and integration of repentant insurgents in the country.

A bill, sponsored by Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe East senatorial district, was read for the first time on the floor of the Senate Thursday.

Already a subject of fierce push back, the bill offers further concession to Boko Haram militants who choose to cease fire.

Last month, the Nigerian military said no fewer than 608 repentant Boko Haram insurgents were undergoing the De-radicalisation, Rehabilitation and Reintegration (DRR) programme under its Operation Safe Corridor in Malam-Sidi, Gombe State.

Clients, the military euphemism for the repentant insurgents, were said to have been exposed to formal literacy classes, skills acquisition and Islamic Religious Knowledge (IRK) as well as drug and psycho-therapists during their training.

A group of Borno elders, led by ex-governor Kashim Shettima, last year, had frowned at the initiative, saying the military’s operation was not well thought out.

They feared that releasing the purported repentant Boko Haram militants into civilian population could be counterproductive as hardened fighters would return to the terror group to commit more atrocities.

“The ongoing de-radicalization and reintegration of repentant Boko Haram insurgents under the “operation safe corridor” of the defense headquarters is a course for concern for members of the Civilian JTF and some stakeholders in the State,” the group wrote in a letter last year.

“(We) suspect that “Boko Haram members do not repent” hence the de-radicalization programme may be breeding spies and agents of recruitment for the Boko Haram,” they had said.

They urged the president to approve the suspension of the programme.

More Nigerians have also spoken out against the policy.

My deputy not to blame for S’Court judgement – David Lyon

0

David Lyon, the Bayelsa governor-elect sacked by the Supreme Court, has said his running mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, should not be blamed for the development.

The sacked governor-elect also urged his supporters and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to avoid violence.

David Lyon described himself as a peacemaker and would never resort to violence over the judgement.

Lyon said his running mate should not be blamed for the Supreme Court verdict which sacked him as Bayelsa governor-elect.

Lyon was sacked because the apex court found his running mate guilty of the certificate forgery suit filed against him by the PDP and its governorship candidate, Douye Diri.

Diri was subsequently declared as the winner of the election and sworn-in as the governor in line with the implementation of the apex court’s verdict.

Lyon, however, said the party’s legal team will explore all legal options to reclaim the mandate.

According to new details that have emerged, and reported by The Guardian, over what led to the death of Laetitia Dagan, an assistant director at the State House, Abuja, who was murdered on Monday night in her apartment, Dagan was murdered by some Yahoo boys living around her residence.

The deceased had reportedly complained that some Yahoo boys around her residence were making her uncomfortable.

She allegedly later reported the development to the police and the suspected criminals were arrested.

They were, however, later freed and got to know that their arrest was prompted by the deceased.

The assailants, thus, decided to revenge by subjecting Dagan to the agony of slow death. She was said to have first been tied in her apartment and subjected her to various indecent acts before strangulating her to death and setting the body ablaze.

Banned in Nigeria for 14 years: Chloroquine emerges anti-viral drug for coronavirus

0

After being banned 14 years ago, preliminary clinical results in China show that Chloroquine Phosphate, used as anti-malarial, is effective in treating novel coronavirus pneumonia.

Several other antiviral drugs to treat the novel coronavirus outbreak in China that has claimed over 1,500 lives are under clinical trials and some have shown fairly good efficacy, a Chinese official said.

Chinese researchers have narrowed down their focus to a few existing drugs, including Chloroquine Phosphate, Favipiravir and Remdesivir, after multiple rounds of screening, Zhang Xinmin, director of the China National Center for Biotechnology Development under the Ministry of Science and Technology, told reporters in Beijing.

In vitro experiments have shown that Chloroquine Phosphate, an antimalarial drug which has been widely used for many years, can effectively inhibit the novel coronavirus infection.

It is now under clinical trials in more than 10 hospitals in Beijing and Guangdong, which enrolled a total of over 100 patients. Clinical trials on the drug will also be launched in central China’s Hunan Province soon, Zhang was quoted as saying in the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Favipiravir, an influenza drug available on overseas markets, has been put in a clinical trial in Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province, with 70 patients enlisted, he said.

The initial outcome of the trial shows the drug has relatively obvious efficacy and low adverse reactions.

“Three to four days after treatment, the group that takes the drug has a significantly higher turning-negative rate in the viral nucleic acid than the parallel-group,” he said.

Remdesivir is developed against Ebola infections by Gilead Sciences, an American pharmaceutical company. It has shown fairly good antiviral activity against the novel coronavirus at the cellular level.

The China-Japan Friendship Hospital and the Institute of Materia Medica under the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences have been authorised to conduct a clinical trial on the drug in over 10 hospitals in Wuhan, the centre of the epidemic in central China’s Hubei Province.

“Next, we will make timely recommendations on the COVID-19 treatment according to the results of these clinical trials,” Zhang said.

The researchers scanned more than 70,000 drugs or compounds through computer simulations and in vitro enzyme activity tests, and selected 5,000 potentially effective drug candidates.

Then they were tested at the cellular level against the common coronavirus infection, and about 100 drugs were chosen for further experiments, which helped to select the final drugs for clinical trials, he said.

The most urgent scientific research task is to improve the cure rate and reduce the mortality, which rely on effective clinical treatments, Zhang said.

New products and technologies have been adopted to treat severe and critically ill patients, a key approach to reduce mortality, and some have achieved good clinical effects, he said.

One of the recent progress is the development of convalescent plasma. It is processed from the plasma collected from recovered patients, which contains a large number of protective antibodies.

So far, a total of 11 severe patients from several hospitals in Wuhan have received the convalescent plasma therapy, with all their clinical indicators getting better and no obvious adverse reactions.

Clinical studies on the stem cell therapy, which can inhibit the overreaction of the body’s immune system, have also been carried out to treat severe patients, Zhang said.
