We firmly applaud His Royal Majesty, Eze Agubuzu of Enugu for his unwavering bravery in telling President Bola Tinubu what other Igbo traditional rulers have been too cowardly, too weak, or too compromised to say: Release Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu immediately or return him to Kenya, according to a statement co-signed by Dr. Sylvester Onyia, AVID, Chief Evans Nwankwo, ASD, and Dr. Maxwell Dede.

As of right now, only two monarchs—Eze Agubuzu and Eze Chukwuemeka Eri—have openly acknowledged the extent of the suffering, injustice, and agony that Kanu’s unlawful confinement has caused our people.

“Most Igbo kings and chiefs, including the Obi of Onitsha and Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, remain silent while Fulani herder murderers are pampered, Yoruba agitators are free, and the Nigerian state continues to show contempt for Igbo humanity.” Their inaction is treachery; their quiet is complicity.

Since these so-called leaders are unable to defend the lives, liberty, and dignity of their own people, we ask bluntly: What are their titles and crowns worth? AlaIgbo cannot endure leaders who prioritize their own comfort over the good of the group.

The groups emphasized that the era of compromises, whispers, and veiled comments was ended and urged all Igbo traditional rulers to speak with one voice and to stop being cowardly and complicit.

Either take a bold stance in support of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu or move aside to give space to leaders who will. Those who decided to remain silent while our people endured injustice will not be forgiven by history, the statement continued.

Asserting that moral authority, not fear of Abuja, is what upholds a people’s dignity, the groups praised Agubuzu’s bravery.

Similarly, Prof. Leo Obinna, a lecturer at Michael Okpara University in Umudike, Imo State, has characterized Igwe Agubuzor as a brave and fearless king whose beliefs are in line with those of the majority of Igbo.

“We demand Nnamdi Kanu’s unconditional release by President Bola Tinubu. Igwe Agubuzor is a brave and fearless ruler. He informed the president only what we thought.

Few leaders will talk in the manner he did. He has my admiration and my praise.

“On Sunday, Igboho and Kanu committed the same well-known crime. He stated, “Igboho has been granted a pardon, and we have heard that the Ooni of Ife is attempting to bestow upon him one of the highest honors in Yoruba land, while our own Kanu is incarcerated.” He claimed that Kanu would have been freed if it had taken place in a another country where justice and equity are valued highly.
Igwe Agubuzor’s call for Kanu’s was welcomed by attorney Godwin Chinonye, who emphasized that the IPOB leader did nothing.

“The traditional monarch was absolutely right when he said that. People like Kanu were freed in other areas. “Yes, I am applauding the traditional for his remarks,” he wrote.

Okezie Ohajuruka, a lawyer from Umuahia, praised Agubuzu’s remarks, calling the monarch “the type of leader the Igbo need at this point in time; people who will speak truth to power.”

Igwe Agubuzu was also praised by Afaraukwu, Umuahia, Ikechukwu Ndubueze, the former president general of Kanu’s community, for speaking the truth to the president directly.

If the IPOB leader had been from another tribe, he should have been freed long ago, he added, and he urged other Igbo leaders to speak up so that their son could be freed.

If Kanu had been a Fulani or Yoruba man, I doubt he would still be behind bars. However, he stated that they would prefer that he die in prison since he is an Igbo man.

According to Festus Okoye, a former National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, all Nigerian polling places have internet connectivity.

On Tuesday, Okoye disclosed this information in an interview that was watched on Trust TV.

He was discussing the national discussion surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s signature on the National Assembly’s change to the Electoral Act.

“Every INEC machine for the election comes with a power bank and other accessories,” he stated.

El-Rufai Files Motion to Strike Out DSS Case, Demands N2 Billion in Damages

In an appeal, Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, asks the court to drop charges brought against him by the Department of State Services, calling the case an egregious abuse of the legal system and incompetence.

The application was submitted in response to the Federal High Court’s pending Charge No. FHC/ABJ/CR/99/2026. The hearing before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik is set for February 25, 2026.

El-Rufai is requesting in the move to have the charge dated February 16, 2026, quashed or struck out on the grounds that it reveals no crime that is known to law and is a misuse of the legal system.

Additionally, he is requesting that the court dismiss him on the grounds that there is insufficient evidence to support the charge.

In addition, the former governor is suing the DSS for N2 billion in fees, claiming that the criminal justice system was unconstitutionally used to harass and humiliate him and that there was “abuse and misuse of the court process.”

The application, which cites 17 reasons for dismissal, contests the accusations’ constitutionality on the basis that they cite crimes that are not known to the law and do not comply with statutory criteria, according to court documents. Alleged dishonesty, lack of proof, prosecution incompetence, and accusations of political persecution and ill faith are further grounds.

The application further argues that the prosecution violated El-Rufai’s fundamental rights by violating a number of constitutional provisions, including Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the presumption of innocence; Section 36(11), which protects against self-incrimination; Section 36(12), which mandates that offenses be defined in written law; and Sections 39 and 40, which guarantee the freedom of expression and freedom of association, respectively.

In a letter dated February 18, El-Rufai’s legal team formally informed the Director-General of the DSS of the application, including the information about his attorney.

El-Rufai was scheduled to be arraigned by the DSS on February 25 for alleged cybercrime and national security breach, as we previously reported.

In a three-count criminal accusation, the DSS accused the former governor of illegally listening in on National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu’s phone conversation.

El-Rufai’s activities, according to the secret police, violated the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003 and the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act of 2024.

In the first count, the DSS claimed that on February 13, 2026, the former governor stated in an interview with Arise TV’s Prime Time Program in Abuja that he and others illegally intercepted the NSA’s phone communications. This is a violation of Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, and is punishable by law.

In count two, El-Rufai was charged with saying in the same TV interview that he was acquainted with someone who illegally collected the NSA’s phone conversations without alerting the appropriate security services.

According to the DSS, the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024’s Section 27(b) punishes the claimed offense.

El-Rufai had stated in the live Arise TV interview that he had heard Ribadu ordering security personnel to hold him. He connected the purported order to what he said was an attempted arrest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on February 12 when he returned from Cairo, Egypt.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crisis in Taraba State took a new turn on Wednesday when the state chapter rejected a 16-member caretaker committee that was proposed by a group inside the party’s National Caretaker Working Committee.

With both parties claiming constitutional validity, the development has further revealed the growing fissures within the party’s structure in the state.

It was stated that a segment of the party, purportedly led by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, introduced the caretaker committee to manage the party’s operations in Taraba State on Tuesday.

The panel, led by Victor Falack, was tasked with directing the party’s operations for the first thirty days or until a new executive committee is chosen.

The faction claims that the decision was made to stabilize the party’s structure in the state and in accordance with the party’s constitution.

According to the organization, the action was required to safeguard adherence to constitutional principles and bring peace back to the party’s ranks.

Nevertheless, the announcement was quickly rejected by the PDP’s acknowledged Taraba State leadership, who called it a nullity.

The alleged caretaker committee was characterized as “false, misleading, and unauthorised” in a statement signed by Herbert Faith Bello, the party’s Media and Publicity Officer in the state.

The announcement, according to the statement, came from “an unrecognized body with no constitutional standing within the Party.”

It further charged that the move’s perpetrators were trying to sow doubt and needless strife among the state’s party members.

Reiterating its power, the state chapter stated that Comrade Chief Obidah Bitrus, the Acting Chairman, is still in charge of the PDP in Taraba.

The party’s constitution and internal democracy are upheld by the current leadership structure, which is still in place, the statement emphasized.

The statement said, “Party members and the general public have been advised to disregard the caretaker committee announcement in its entirety as it does not reflect the position of the recognized state leadership or any authentic organ of the party.”
