Atiku’s American University of Nigeria sacks 400 staff

0

The American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, Adamawa State, founded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has disengaged the services of about 400 of its staff following a long restructuring process.

Vice President for University Relations, AUN, Prof. Abba Tahir, made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday.

Tahir said that majority of the affected personnel were those that had no significant developmental effect on the philosophy of the university.

He said: “Certain structural elements have been initiated by the new Governing Council of American University of Nigeria (AUN), in response to NUC requirements, mandating the institution to align with an approved governance structure for all tertiary institutions in the country.

”Until now, AUN has operated a student-staff ratio which balance had continued to affect the sustainability of the university.

”This is clearly an uncommon and hardly workable tradition in all institutions and organisations around the world. Obviously it is unattainable.

”Thus, consequent upon the university’s new governing council vote to restructure the institution in line with its agenda for sustainability, a process of workforce rationalisation has been in the pipeline.

”It is now time for the university to look back, look around and look ahead, to ensure that realistic and globally competitive administrative practices can be achieved in structure, strategy and focus.

“It would not be realistic for AUN to continue to anchor its administrative structure on an over-bloated personnel whose role do not have significant effect on the philosophy of a development university,” he said.

The university official further stated that in the emerging sustainable structure, competitive personnel were retained, while others were disengaged honourably.
He said that all those affected were paid their contractual benefits at the point of clearance, to continue with their lives somewhere else.

Tahir said that as a typical American style institution, AUN deliberately trains its students to search for sustainable solutions to human development challenges.

COVID-19: 65 Almajiris, 2 Policemen Test Positive For Coronavirus In Kaduna

0

The Kaduna State Government has disclosed that 65 of the 72 coronavirus cases currently being managed in the state were Almajiris that returned from Kano state.
It added that the seven other positive patients currently being managed at the state isolation centers include two police officer that were deployed to the state by Nigerian Police for enforcement of law and order.

The State Standing Committee on coronavirus, who disclosed the statistics in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye, yesterday on the committee’s effort to reduce the virus spread, hinted that the total cases recorded in the state stands at 81.
“Kaduna State is treating 72 Covid-19 patients. Almajirai recently returned from Kano constitute 65 of these cases. The seven other cases on admission are persons with travel history outside Kaduna State or their contact.
“Since the index case

was reported on 28 March 2020, the state has discharged eight patients and has recorded one fatality who died before his positive test result was received. Overall, 81 cases have been recorded in the state but the active cases are now 72.
“We are aware of documented instances of police and paramilitary personnel that have been involved in illegal interstate travel. This is unfortunate. Two policemen are among the 72 persons the state is treating for Covid-19. This should serve to remind everyone that nobody is immune from the virus”.

The Standing Committee, however, urged citizens to report any person who they know has sneaked into the state. Such persons are violating the state’s Quarantine Orders as well as the nationwide prohibition of interstate travel by the Federal Government.
“Beyond illegal conduct, such persons are risking the health and lives of Kaduna State residents by recklessly spreading the virus across state lines.

“Therefore, residents of Kaduna State are encouraged to be uncompromising in exposing and reporting these potential spreaders of disease. They should not be allowed to spread sickness and make nonsense of the sacrifices the people of Kaduna State are making in enduring the tough but necessary measures announced to protect them.

“Citizens who suspect that they have been exposed to Covid-19 should act responsibly, avoid infecting others, contact health officials and isolate themselves until the authorities come to see them. Such persons are urged to readily volunteer all relevant information on their health, travel history and contacts”.

National Assembly Complex

Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), and Osagie Ehanire, minister of health are currently before the house of representatives to brief the assembly on the strange deaths in Kano state.

The duo, who came alongside Chikwe Ihekweazu, the director-general of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), on Tuesday, are to also brief the house on efforts to address the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Since recording its first case of the disease on April 11, Kano has been experiencing strange deaths which the state government initially said was not related to the virus.

A presidential task force later linked majority of the deaths in the state to COVID-19.

After debating a motion on the deaths last week, the lawmakers resolved to summon the trio to seek answers to the challenge and find ways of addressing the pandemic in Nigeria.

They had also sought the inclusion of traditional and religious leaders in efforts to manage the health crisis.

Kano has so far recorded 365 of 2,802 coronavirus cases in Nigeria, according to the NCDC.

The lyrics of Keep Holding On by Dr Paul Enenche and family
Beyond the cloud the sun still shines
Beyond the bend the road goes on
Weeping may endure the night
But joy comes in the morning
Beyond the cloud, the sun still shines
Beyond the bend the road goes on
Weeping may endure the night
But joy yet comes in the morning….

Keep holding on
Keep holding on
Beyond the cloud
The sun still shines
Beyond the bend
The road goes on
Beyond the cloud
The sun still shines
Beyond the bend
The road goes on
So keep holding on
And keep holding on
And keep holding on and on
So keep holding on
And keep holding on

There is no need to give up
So keep holding on
And keep holding on
And keep holding on and on
So keep holding on
And keep holding on
Your victory is here
Keep holding on…

With hope in God
You can make it
With faith in him
Your life is safe
With hope in God
You can make it
With faith in him
Your life is safe

So keep holding on
And keep holding on
And keep holding on and on
So keep holding on
And keep holding on
There is no need to give up
So keep holding on
And keep holding on

And keep holding on and on
So keep holding on
And keep holding on
Your victory is here
Keep holding on…

If you give up
You will go down
If you lose hope
You will lose out
If you give up
You will go down
If you lose hope
You will lose out

So keep holding on
And keep holding on
And keep holding on and on
So keep holding on
And keep holding on
There is no need to give up

So keep holding on
And keep holding on
And keep holding on and on

So keep holding on
And keep holding on
Your victory is here
So keep holding on
And keep holding on
And keep holding on and on
So keep holding on
And keep holding on

There is no need to give up
So keep holding on
And keep holding on
And keep holding on and on
So keep holding on
And keep holding on
Your victory is here.

80 Almajiri children flee Bauchi to Nasarawa

0

No fewer than eighty Almajiri kids have fled Bauchi State to Nasarawa state.

The Almajiris who are from Nasarawa state were accompanied by their teachers to Lafia, the state capital over 10 days ago.

All of them have been quarantined in Lafia, pending reunion with their parents.

Governor Abdullahi Sule revealed this Monday, when he visited the quarantine centre at the Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic in Lafia,to ensure the children and their teachers are not isolated alongside returnees from high risk states.

“Recently, we started also receiving the almajiris from the different northern states, so I came with the concern that we cannot mix people who are coming from the high risk areas with especially the almajiris.

“I am happy to see that we have only the almajiris that we received from Bauchi here roughly about seventy or eighty of them. We don’t have any returnee still here from high risk state here instead they have been moved to another location”.

“I came to make sure the Almajiris are well fed and have been tested.”

At another isolation centre, are also eleven returnees from Taraba state intercepted yesterday by security personnel and ten also from Kano state, who returned 5 days ago, mingled with their family before being traced and forcibly brought to the quarantine centre.

COVID-19: Like Kano, Sokoto hit by mysterious deaths

0

Sokoto city is currently engulfed in mass deaths whose cause is yet to be ascertained by medical experts. We pray to Allah (SWT) to bring an end to this scourge Amin.

Coming at a time of the global health emergency, the fingers are pointing towards the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the Tudun Wada cemetery in Sokoto, there are reports of over 100 bodies brought for burial in one single day. The situation in Sokoto is so tense that residents of Sokoto in particular and the entire state in general are now living in a very tensed and palpable atmosphere. This otherwise peaceful and ‘healthy’ state is now engulfed in an extended health emergency further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Something more than COVID-19 is happening in Sokoto.

The ongoing extended health emergency in Sokoto can be likened to the ongoing case of mass deaths in Kano which started a few weeks ago. One thing the two states share in common at the moment is the very high temperature leading to often times unbearable heat wave. There are also reports of these mass deaths in Kano and Sokoto involving diabetic patients and very old people. There has yet not been any direct link between the mass deaths in Kano and Sokoto to COVID-19.

In this regard, there is the urgent need for the appropriate authorities particularly the national centre for disease control (NCDC) to embark on an immediate fact-finding mission to Sokoto with a view to not only ascertaining the extent of this situation but also applying measures as necessary.

Although most of the deaths recorded are those of the aged elderly indigenes of the state, there are also cases of middle aged and the not-so-old. One such case was the death of a professor at the Usmanu Danfodio University Sokoto (UDUS) who died recently. Although the deceased is said to be diabetic, his death has not been confirmed to be from COVID-19 infection.

It is advisable that the Sokoto state government comes open on the true situation on the ground in Sokoto just as the Kano state government did.

Sokoto state government needs to seek help from the federal government so that it could increase its capacity to contain the situation.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state have jumped from zero in the last three weeks to 54 and rising as at today 3rd May 2020.

It is imperative to note that a full blown escalation of the COVID-19 pandemic in Sokoto state will be unthinkable as the state lacks even the most elementary medical capacity to contain even the most basic health cases.

There is virtually no health care system in Sokoto state to respond to COVID-19 hence the state government had resorted to ‘public awareness and sensitisation’ as its best method to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

While other states such as Cross Rivers (with no reported case of COVID-19 so far) and Ondo are producing face masks locally, our dear Sokoto state government is resorting to ‘public awareness’.

Everything humanly possible must be done to stop the COVID-19 pandemic from reaching the grassroots local communities in Sokoto state and the rest of the country. The grassroots communities in Sokoto are too weak to manage any further spread of COVID-19 pandemic coupled with a non-existent health care system and ravaging debilitating unbearable endemic poverty in the state.

The Sokoto state government needs to upgrade its measures aimed at containing the COVID-19 pandemic.

In particular, there is the urgent need to impose a total lockdown of Sokoto city until the current situation of mass deaths is fully assessed by the NCDC and other relevant authorities. Appropriate palliatives should also be made available and the right steps put in place to ensure that these palliatives get to the poorest of the poor. Currently, the lockdown and restriction order in Sokoto state is majorly confined to inter-state travels. This lockdown order should be extended to the interior communities particularly in Sokoto city.

There is also the need for Sokoto state to start local production of face masks and make them available to the local village grassroots communities. Face masks should get to even the remotest part of the state.

Wearing of face masks should be made compulsory in public places until this health emergency is brought under control.

The state government should also invest in the local production of ventilators by the local engineers, fabricators and also at the Usmanu Danfodio university (UDUS) and other relevant tertiary institutions in the state. Bayero university Kano (BUK) is standing up to be counted in the fight against COVID-19 as it has locally produced a ventilator. This is a huge achievement

As a matter of fact, there are local engineers and fabricators in the state particularly the fabricators in Kara area Sokoto who, given the right support and encouragement can produce ventilators which can be certified fit for purpose by the appropriate medical experts including the NCDC.

Our dear Sokoto state is in a race against time unless something is done by medical experts and the relevant authorities to bring the current extended health emergency in the state under control.
