DPR: 94% of filling stations now complying with new fuel price

0

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) says 94 percent of filling stations have complied with the new petrol price of between N121.50 to N123.50 per litre.

Abubakar Buba, the Abuja zonal operations controller of the DPR, disclosed this while conducting a monitoring exercise of fuel retail outlets in the federal capital territory (FCT).

Buba expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance by oil marketers, noting that it would sanction any actor within the downstream sector flouting the rules.

He said the reason the agency is pushing for compliance is to ensure that marketers do not sell above the designated price range, under-dispense to motorists or divert the products to neighbouring states.

Buba disclosed that of the 36 petrol retail outlets visited so far, only two were found selling above N123.50 which are, Rahamaniyya Oil and Gas; and Mpape and Yinzag Petroils, Mabushi.

He said the two petrol retail outlets were sealed off, sanctioned and have been directed to comply with the new prices, after which they would be reopened.

Speaking on the complaints of contaminated diesel being sold in some locations across the country, Bubu said officials from the agency have visited different locations to collect samples of the products and it is currently waiting for the results of the tests conducted on the samples.

“We have received a lot of complaints; some of them we visited and took a sample, and we are now waiting for the analysis. Although the laboratory scientists are not available now, the few management staff that we have are trying to make sure that they do the analysis.”

COVID-19: ‘Disregard Wike’s 8pm-6am curfew, enforce FG’s 10pm-4am directive’ – Rivers police to officers

0

The Rivers State Police Command has said it is enforcing the 10 pm-4 am curfew of the Federal government and not the 8 pm-6 am curfew of the State government.

The Command made clarification following the conflicting orders of the Federal and the State governments in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Recall that the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, declared a curfew on Port Harcourt and Obio Akpor starting from June 2.

The curfew, according to Wike, would run from 8 pm to 6 am.

But speaking to the media in Port Harcourt, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni said officers were not implementing the curfew imposed by the Rivers Government.

DSP Omoni said the Command had directed its men to enforce the compliance of the curfew declared by the Federal Government, which begins at 10 pm to 4 am daily.

He argued that, “Since both curfew times are meant to meet the same target, that of the Federal Government supersedes, in keeping with the constitutional provisions of the country.”

Omoni advised members of the public who suffer harassment in the hands of police officers as a result of the conflicting time to call the Police Emergency phone lines or his mobile line

The Ogun state government has said that 104 new COVID-19 cases were discovered in one company in Sagamu.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, made this known on Wednesday in Abeokuta. She, however, noted that the patients are all asymptomatic.

Coker said that the state recorded 108 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the total to 471. She added that the state has also recorded 13 COVID-19 deaths.

She said, “104 cases are from a single site and they are all asymptomatic. 108 new cases, 104 from Sagamu, three from Abeokuta South and one from Yewa South.”

Also reacting to the development, Remi Hassan, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Public Communications, said the latest figure was the highest figure it had recorded since the state’s index case.

Hassan added that the latest number of cases shows that the transmission of the virus is not a reflection of community spread.

He stated that the state government was no going back on its plan to reopen the religious centres despite the alarming 108 COVID-19 cases recorded in the state within 24 hours.

He said the state government subjected the staff of some companies along Sagamu-interchange to what he called a total COVID-19 test, when it learned that they were not observing protocols for the virus.

COVID-19: Makinde gives update on reopening of religious centers, schools

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has said that schools in the state remain closed due to the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.

Makinde said this while delivering an address at a special plenary to commemorate the first year anniversary of the state House of Assembly on Wednesday.

According to the governor, the ban on religious and social gatherings in the state may not be lifted soon, adding that the state should not be in a hurry to fully reopen.

He said, “We have held off from reversing our directive on religious gatherings. We saw what happened when a private organisation did not follow the advisories we provided to the letter.

“Over 50 percent of the COVID-19 cases in Oyo State can be traced to this organisation. So, I take this opportunity to, again, plead with our religious leaders to be patient with us. We are keeping eye on the numbers and will adjust this directive at the right time. Schools won’t be reopened yet.”

Two French soldiers wounded in a shootout by Chadian troops in N’Djamena

Two French soldiers were shot and wounded Tuesday near the Chadian presidential palace in the capital N’Djamena, in what the French military described as an “accident.”

The two soldiers were on a reconnaissance patrol outside the palace to prepare for an official visit, Colonel Frederic Barbry, a military spokesman, told AFP. “The circumstances of the accident are still to be determined,” he said, adding the two soldiers’ lives were not in danger but they were being evacuated.

An officer in Chad’s presidential guard, who asked not to be named, told AFP the two “arrived in a white Prado (jeep). They were in civilian clothes and stopped in front of the main gate of the new palace and therefore the soldiers on guard fired on them. Then another car came and got them.”

Chad, whose president Idriss Deby has been in power for three decades, is an ally of France and its military is seen as one of the most effective in the region. Its military is a key part of the 5,000-man G5 Sahel force, alongside Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali and Mauritania, cooperating with France’s Barkhane force deployed in the Sahel to combat a growing Islamist insurgency.

Deby surprised G5 partners and France earlier this year when he said no Chadian soldier would participate in operations outside the nation’s border. The Chad military also participates in the Multinational Joint Force (FMM) which since 2015 has been fighting Boko Haram, now very established in the Lake Chad basin on the border with Niger and Cameroon.

Boko Haram’s jihadist conflict in northeast Nigeria since 2009 has killed 35,000 people and displaced around two million from their homes. On March 23, 98 Chadian soldiers were massacred in an attack on their base at Bohoma on the banks of Lake Chad.

Deby then ordered a massive offensive against the group from March 31 to April 3, and said there was “not a single jihadist left” in the Lake Chad region. N’Djamena claimed a thousand “terrorists” had been killed in the crackdown.
