My father’s skeleton was reassembled 10 years after death – Ken Saro-Wiwa’s daughter

Noo Saro-Wiwa, daughter of the late environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, says her father’s skeleton was reassembled 10 years after death fo burial.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday to mark her father’s 25th death anniversary, the author lamented the treatment metted to the late activist and eight others murdered by the General Sani Abacha regime.

“25 years ago today, my father Ken Saro-Wiwa and his eight colleagues were murdered by Nigeria’s military regime after a sham trial. Their only ‘crime’ was to peacefully pursue human rights for the Ogoni people and to campaign against oil spills in the oil-rich Niger Delta,” she wrote.

“Their bodies were buried in an unmarked grave for almost a decade. When our family finally received my father’s remains we had to reassemble his skeleton with our own hands before giving him a dignified burial.

“To this day the Nigerian government has not granted him an official pardon. It speaks volumes about our so-called democracy. No government can call itself civilised or claim any moral authority while it refuses to exonerate these innocent men. Black lives will matter outside of Africa only when they matter in Africa itself.”

Saro-Wiwa was tried by a special military tribunal for allegedly masterminding the gruesome murder of Ogoni chiefs at a pro-government meeting.

He was hanged on November 10, 1995 by the military dictatorship of General Sani Abacha. His execution provoked international outrage and resulted in Nigeria’s suspension from the Commonwealth of Nations for over three years.e

Sanwo-Olu to abolish pension for Tinubu, Fashola, others

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday announced his intention to repeal the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension Law 2007), which provides for payment of pension and other entitlements to former Governors and their Deputies.

This will consequently end the current pension received by ex-governors, Bola Tinubu, Babatunde Fashola among others.

He made this known while presenting the 2021 budget to the Lagos State House of Assembly.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced his intention, through executive bill, to REPEAL the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension Law 2007), which provides for payment of pension & other entitlements to former Governors and their Deputies,” Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor New Media, Gawat Jubril, wrote on Twitter.

Borders opened for Dangote alone, says Stanbic IBTC founder

Founder of Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc, Atedo Peterside, says the  Federal Government has granted Dangote Cement alone access to border operations.

Nigerian land borders have been shut for over a year following moves to curtail smuggling from neighbouring countries.

A report on Monday by Bloomberg, however, said the authorities had exempted Dangote Cement from the border restrictions.

In a tweet on Monday, Mr Peterside, a former chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Plc, said the move shows the Nigerian economy has been rigged to favour a select few.

“Allowing legitimate exporters & importers to move their goods across the border should be a no-brainer. Why refuse everybody else & allow only one company (Dangote)?

“This is why some of us argue that the Nigerian economy is rigged in favour of a handful of well-connected persons,” he wrote.

The Buhari administration gave its authorisation for Africa’s biggest producer to export cement to Niger and Togo in the third quarter for the first time in 10 months, chief executive officer Michel Puchercos said on an investor call in Lagos.

The export was made possible “through authorisation given by this administration,” he said.

The exemption to Dangote Cement is seen as a softening of the government’s position on a border closure that started in August last year and could open the way for other businesses to fully resume exports across the country’s land barriers.

A statement signed by one Lawal Muhammad Gusau on behalf of the ‘Concerned and Peace-Loving Muslim Ummah, listed some conditions the actress must meet before she can defend herself in the court.

According to the group, one of the condition is that the defendant’s lawyers must be Muslims by faith, as only a Muslim lawyer would understand the proceedings of a Sharia Court.

It added that the case against Sadau “is a matter relating to the Hadiths of the Holy Prophet Muhammed and the glorious Holy Qur’an and not a matter relating to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Arabic inscriptions on Naira not violation of Constitution – CBN

CBN publishes new permit

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says the Arabic inscriptions on the Naira notes does not violate Nigeria’s Constitution.

The apex financial body made this known on Monday in response to a suit filed by a Lagos-based lawyer, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo, at the Federal High Court, Lagos, seeking the removal of the Arabic inscriptions on Naira notes as it portrays the country as an Islamic state.

In the suit, Omirhobo, had argued that he does not know what the inscriptions mean and is therefore, praying the court to order the CBN to replace them with either the English language, which is the official language in Nigeria, or any of Nigeria’s three main indigenous languages, Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo.

The lawyer added that with the “Arabic inscriptions on the Naira note, the CBN has been violating sections 10 and 55 of the Nigerian Constitution, which make the country a secular state.”

He, therefore, asked the court to restrain the CBN from “further approving, printing and issuing Naira notes with Arabic inscriptions, bearing in mind that Nigeria is a secular state.”

But in a counter-affidavit in opposition to the suit deposed to by the apex bank through its lawyer, Abiola Lawal, the CBN maintained that contrary to Omirhobo’s claim “the Ajami inscriptions on some of the country’s currencies do not connote any religious statements or Arabian alignment,” adding that the inscriptions were not a “threat to Nigeria’s secular status.”

“The inscriptions on the country’s currencies do not, and at no time, threatened the secular statehood of the nation, nor have they violated the Constitution of Nigeria, as every design and inscription was finalised with the approval of the relevant government bodies,” the CBN said.

The apex bank stressed that the inscriptions on the Naira notes dated back to the colonial-era “and they do not imply that Arabic is an official language in Nigeria.”

“The Naira notes have retained the inscriptions with the Ajami inscriptions since 1973 when the name of the Nigerian currency was changed to Naira from Pounds.

“The Ajami was inscribed on the country’s currency by the colonialists to aid those without Western education in certain parts of the country, who, back then, constituted a larger part of the populace.

“The Ajami is not a symbol or mark of Islam but an inscription to aid the populace uneducated in Western education in ease of trade,” it added.

‘We’re not aware of the freezing of #EndSARS campaigners’ accounts’ —Senate

The Senate, on Monday, denied knowledge of the freezing of the accounts of some #EndSARS campaigners by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The senate said the Governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele, never wrote to it before taking the action as they only read about it on the pages of newspapers just like other Nigerians.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the senator representing Ekiti Central Federal Constituency, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, made this revelation when the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, (SAN), appeared before the committee, to defend the ministry’s 2021 budget estimates.

Sen. Bamidele who spoke with journalists shortly after the presentation, said the Senate was awaiting further information on the issue of freezing the accounts of the EndSARS campaigners from apex bank as they were not aware of it and the circumstances that led to the freezing.

“We are not aware of the CBN freezing the accounts of #EndSARS campaigners. We read it in the news like everyone else. Our committee is interested in knowing what is going on in this regard. Our committee is neither in a position to either explain or defend the CBN’s action,” Bamidele said.

The Senator noted that the legislature would liaise with the executive to know what was going on and find a lasting solution to it.

“We will reach out to the executive. If it is true, we would find out what the stakeholders in charge are trying to achieve with this,” he added.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is very serious about creating jobs for the teeming youths of Nigeria as a way of curtailing youth restiveness.

Mohammed who spoke in Lagos on Sunday, November 8, said the Federal Government will continue to address the issue of job creation for the youths despite the economic downturn occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic.

Mohammed was in Lagos for a meeting with governors, traditional rulers and political heavyweights in the south-western parts of the country, following the recent #EndSARS protests that culminated in widespread mayhem, looting and arson.

He added that the government would continue to engage the youths and address the issue of poverty alleviation.

The Minister asserted that the government would continue to invest in the development of human capacity, with more implementation of economic policies that will engender development and building of more public infrastructure that would empower the teeming youths of the country.

The one-day meeting was attended by a Presidential delegation led by the Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari.

While addressing journalists at the end of the meeting, Mohammed said:

“It is not as if the government has not been addressing the issue of unemployment. The newly launched funds by the government were actually aimed at creating job opportunities.

“What the government has done so far is to provide platforms where businesses can thrive,” he said.

The Minister also said that the purpose of the South-West meeting was to allow governors and other political leaders in the South-West to interact and find a lasting solution to the problems bedeviling the country from different fronts.

“The meeting was a peaceful meeting and it was agreed that the states and the Federal Government’s response to the initial demand of the #EndSARS protest were appropriate,” the Minister said.

Melania Trump advises husband to concede defeat

0

Melania Trump, the First Lady of the United States has advised her husband Donald Trump to concede defeat to US President-elect Joe Biden, international media reports said on Monday.

The move came after Trump, in a statement, said that Biden is “rushing to falsely pose as the winner” and that the race is “far from over”.

Trump claimed that networks were helping the Democrat “falsely” pose as the winner and promised to fight the results in court, reported The Hill.

Although the first lady has not publicly commented on the election, she has privately weighed in with her opinion, reported CNN “She has offered it, as she oftendoes,” said the source. Melania had earlier campaigned for her husband’s re-election last month.

Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and his senior adviser, had earlier approached the President about conceding the election, two sources told CNN.

President-elect Joe Biden had defeated Trump in a closely contested election, securing his win by a victory in the state of Pennsylvania which took him past the electoral college threshold of 270 votes.

Biden, a four-decade Washington figure as a Senator and then a vice president, has received in his third attempt at the White House, more than 74 million votes, four million more than Trump’s votes, and more than any other presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, a day after Donald Trump’s defeat in the 2020 US presidential elections, a former aide to the first lady has claimed that Melania Trump is counting every minute to divorce the president, Daily Mail reported.

Fellow ex-aide Omarosa Manigault Newman claimed the couple’s 15-year marriage was over. “Melania is counting every minute until he is out of the office and she can divorce,” the report said.

The source said that Melania Trump was waiting for her husband to leave the White House as she did not want to humiliate him. “If Melania were to try to pull the ultimate humiliation and leave while he’s in office, he [Donald Trump] would find a way to punish her,” the report cited Newman.

Similarly, another former aide, Stephanie Wolkoff, senior adviser to FLOTUS Melania Trump, alleged Donald and Melania had separate bedrooms in the White House and a “transactional marriage”. The report has sent social media into a frenzy. Despite frosty moments in public, Melania, 50, has always claimed she has “a great relationship” with her husband, 74.

#EndSARS: We are exiting power, Buhari tells youths

0

Nigerian youths would do well to keep the peace, as it is in their own interest ultimately, President Muhammadu Buhari has said.

The President spoke Monday at State House, Abuja, while receiving in audience the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, Nigeria’s former Minister of Environment.

In a statement by his Special Assistant Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the president said, “Our own generation is on the last lap, we are exiting,” President Buhari said in response to the recent EndSARS protest, and the mayhem and destruction of public and private property that came in its wake”.

“It is in the interest of the youths to keep the peace. They want jobs, infrastructure and development. I have sent a team led by the Chief of Staff (Professor Ibrahim Gambari) to go round the country, talk to traditional rulers, who will then talk to the youths. The views of the youths have been heard,” he added.

He said that the current administration inherited severe infrastructural deficits, “and that is what we are fighting to correct. We can’t just sit, fold our hands, and do nothing. We are doing our best within the limits of resources.”

President Buhari rued the fact that COVID-19 has shrunk the global economy, noting that “this is something you can’t see, smell, or hear,” but which has wrought devastation on lives and livelihoods round the world.

On climate change, he said Nigeria was concerned about the recharge of the Lake Chad, which has great implications on security, irregular migration, and livelihoods.

The Deputy Secretary-General said she was on a courtesy call with her team to flag interest on challenges that concern the UN, particularly COVID-19, climate change, security, and humanitarian responses to the diverse challenges.
