Trump’s refusal to accept defeat ‘embarrassing’ –Biden

0

President-elect of the United States of America, Joe Biden has described the refusal of Donald Trump to concede in the presidential election as “an embarrassment” but said nothing would stop the transition of power after his term ends.

Biden who was addressing the country on Tuesday, said Trump’s failure to acknowledge his victory and concede “does not change the dynamic” of his transition planning, but called it “an embarrassment” that will “not help the president’s legacy”.

He added that Trump instructing agencies to block his transition is “not of much consequence”, but added that federal funds he will receive when his victory is recognised by the General Services Administration would be helpful.

“We’re going to be going moving along in a consistent manner, putting together our administration, White House, and reviewing who we’re going to pick for cabinet positions. And nothing’s going to stop that,” Biden said. “And and so I’m confident that the fact that they’re not willing to acknowledge we won at this point is not of much consequence in our planning and what we’re able to do between now and January 20th.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, when asked on Tuesday if he was cooperating with President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team, said “there will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration”.

According to reports, Trump has reportedly ordered US agencies to, for the time being, block the transition to the Biden administration, again bucking election norms but Biden’s team has threatened legal action if the government agency that can unlock transition funds and office access continues to not recognise his recent victory.

Counter Insurgency: Nigeria receives 2 sophisticated drones

Nigeria has joined China and United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the only countries operating the WingLoong II Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV).

In addition to the two inducted into the Nigeria Air Force (NAF), six other UCAVs are expected by early 2021.

The two WingLoong II can remain airborne for 31 hours in internal security reconnaissance (ISR) mode and 26 hours in offensive role.

NAF Spokesperson, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said in a statement on Tuesday that the aircraft will add significant value to the nation’s counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations.

Daramola said that in the last five years, 22 new aircraft have been acquired by the Air Force while 19 more are expected before June 2021.

According to the NAF Spokesperson, “close to 200 NAF pilots, engineers and technicians are undergoing training in nine different countries as part of efforts to bridge decades of gaps in capability and capacity that have made Nigeria vulnerable to asymmetrical threats.

“These additional new air assets and skills acquired by personnel will greatly enhance Nigerian Air Force’s operational effectiveness which will translate into security for Nigeria and Nigerians.”

On Monday, Daramola said in a statement that the service is set to take delivery of additional aircraft, including three JF-17 multi-role fighter aircraft while also reactivating several existing platforms such as the F-7Ni fighter jet.

This move, he said, is “the drive to reposition the NAF into a highly professional and disciplined force through capacity building initiatives for effective, efficient and timely employment of air power in response to Nigeria’s national security imperatives.”

Daramola quoted Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was on an operational visit to NAF Base Makurdi on Monday to assess the current reactivation work on the F-7 aircraft and commissioning of some infrastructural projects.

The projects include the newly-remodeled and fully-furnished NAF School of Air Intelligence as well as a block of accommodation for Pakistani pilots and technicians who would support the JF-17 aircraft during the first year of its operations in Nigeria.

Speaking after assessing the progress of work on the F-7Ni aircraft, Air Marshal Abubakar emphasised that these activities clearly show the level of seriousness with which the Government is working to ensure that the NAF gets some of its grounded aircraft back to flying status.

Private sector lost N5tn to #EndSARS unrest – NECA

0

PRESIDENT of the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association, (NECA), Taiwo Adeniyi, has said that the widespread looting and arson caused by hoodlums who hijacked the peaceful #EndSARS protests cost the private sector N5 trillion in loss of investments and assets.

Adeniyi, who described the hoodlums’ attack as “colossal and barbaric”, disclosed this at a press briefing in Lagos on Tuesday.

He said that the figure was got from estimation based on findings from affected privately-owned businesses.

Adeniyi lamented that the affected businesses were already reeling from the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NECA President noted that the businesses have been finding it difficult to fulfil financial obligations to creditors, employees and regulators.

“Organised businesses became some of the victims of the colossal and barbaric destruction and vandalism of critical investment and assets by hoodlums.

“While the Lagos State Government estimated a loss of about N5tn and Plateau State Government estimated over N700bn, the total value of the economic loss to organised businesses nationwide could be in the region of over N5tn.

“From looted machineries, consumables, livestock, raw-materials, pharmaceutical products, luxury goods and cash to actual and wicked vandalism and destruction of walls, smashed and mutilated doors, glasses, damaged critical electricity infrastructures, burnt buildings and properties and looted stocks. The list is endless.

“The actual value in terms of financial, emotional and psychological loss suffered as a result of the arson and looting experienced by these businesses can only be imagined and the impact will linger for a long time,” Adeniyi lamented.

The NECA boss called for further initiatives to be urgently put in place to ensure a quick return to economic normalcy across the country.

Adeniyi said that the Federal Government should urgently make public details of its planned support for businesses affected during the October #EndSARS protest hijacked by hoodlums.

“We recommend that deliberate bail-out funds should be given to verified businesses affected by the crisis.

”Other programmes and interventions aimed at supporting these businesses to get back to production and remain sustainable and competitive should also be urgently initiated.

“While the additional window of penalty and interest waiver for businesses by the Federal Inland Revenue Services is commendable, what businesses really need at this critical period is substantial tax relief.

“This will enable businesses stay afloat and also keep productive activities going. It is in our national interest to enable businesses surmount the challenges of rising unemployment,” he said.

The NECA president also called on the government to set aside an intervention fund for the purpose of easing the burden of losses incurred by businesses as a result of the vandalism.

According to him, such funds will make a huge difference in the economy by stabilising the system.

“Approval of funds from the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) among other possible measures will help stabilise the system and stop further increase in unemployment rate.

“It is expected that there will be a likely threshold of higher premium attached to the insurance cover of the property destroyed during the unfortunate incident.

“We, therefore, call for intervention to reduce the risk for businesses as cash flow will be tremendously affected in this regard,” the NECA president said.

He urged the government to fast-track the investigation and prosecution of those found culpable in the killing and harassment of innocent citizens which necessitated the call for #EndSARS.

He called for the arrest and prosecution of the hoodlums that perpetrated the wanton looting and destruction.

“While the wanton destruction of property and loss of lives were regrettable, the factors that led to the protest and eventual hijack by hooligans should not be lost on us as a people,” he said.

Adeniyi said that greater efforts should be made to promote creativity, innovation, technical and vocational skills development, enterprise and competitiveness as a way out of unemployment, poverty and social dysfunction bedevilling the nation.

CBN accuses 20 #EndSARS campaigners of terrorism

CBN publishes new permit

The Federal Government was able to freeze the accounts of 20 #EndSARS campaigners after telling a Federal High Court in Abuja that the funds in their accounts might have been linked to terrorist activities.

This is according to a written address in support of a motion ex parte filed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The CBN had in the second week of October frozen 20 accounts and thereafter approached the court to seek an ex parte order to freeze the accounts.

In the case with suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1384/2020, filed before Justice A. R. Mohammed, the CBN, however, made no mention of the fact that the 20 accounts were owned by persons involved in the #EndSARS protests, but told the court that the funds might have emanated from terrorist activities.

The written address read in part, “My lord, the nature of the transactions undertaken through the defendants’ accounts are of suspected terrorism financing in contravention of Section 13(1)(a)and(b) of the Terrorism (Prevention)(Amendment) Act, 2013 and Regulation 31(2)(a)and (3)(b) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism Regulations, 2013.”

In a supporting affidavit deposed to by one Aondowase Jacob on behalf of the CBN, it was stated that the Head of the Economic Intelligence Unit of the Governor’s Department, CBN, Joseph Omayuku, had conducted an investigation on the accounts of the defendants and other individuals and entities held with certain banks in Nigeria.

According to the affidavit, the investigation showed that the owners of the accounts may have been involved in terrorist activities.

It added, “There is a grave allegation that the defendants are involved in suspected terrorism financing via their bank accounts in contravention of the provisions of extant laws and regulations. The aforesaid transactions undertaken by the defendants, using their bank accounts, can cause significant economic and security harm to the public and the Federal Republic of Nigeria if left unchecked.

“The applicant (CBN governor) is thus desirous to have the court empower him to direct the freezing of the 20 accounts listed on the annexure to this application and all other bank accounts held by the defendants.

“A freezing order of this honourable court in respect of the defendants’ accounts would also enable the investigation of the activities of the defendants to a logical conclusion with a view to reporting same to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.”

The apex bank said unless the order was granted, it would not be able to ensure that the money remained intact, while investigations were ongoing.

The 20 accounts frozen by the CBN are domiciled in Access Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Fidelity Bank, United Bank for Africa and Zenith Bank.

The accounts were said to have been flagged after they received money with the narration #EndSARS.

One of the frozen accounts, marked 0056412470 and domiciled in Access Bank, belongs to Bolatito Olorunrinu Oduala, an #EndSARS campaigner, who was appointed into the Lagos State judicial panel set up by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Another frozen account marked 0033974485 and domiciled in Access Bank belongs to Bassey Israel, the medical team coordinator for the #EndSARS protests in Port Harcourt.

Similarly, an account marked 0054676984 domiciled in Access Bank belongs to Gatefield Nigeria Limited, which paid freelance journalists to cover the protests.

Justice Mohammed froze the accounts for 180 days subject to renewal, but said anyone who was not satisfied with the ruling was free to challenge it.

A leading member of the #EndSARS protesters, Aisha Yesufu, described the freezing of the #EndSARS protesters’ accounts as illegal, noting that the government “is behaving like a terrorist.”

She questioned the freezing of the accounts ahead of the court injunction ordering the banks to block the accounts.

Yesufu stated, “The question is, why did they freeze the accounts before obtaining a court injunction? Why the illegality? Our judiciary should know that it is an independent arm of government and there is separation of power.

“The government should be ashamed of itself. The United Arab Emirates just convicted some Nigerians, who were accused of terrorism, and we are hearing that the government would appeal on their behalf. That is where the problem is.”

The activist accused the Federal Government of pampering insurgents, while bearing down on peaceful and harmless protesters.

She added, “#EndSARS campaigners are protesters and they protested the way the Constitution allows, so all these are shenanigans. They had better focus on the terrorists.

“Bandits are laying down their arms and they are taking them to Government Houses, while Boko Haram members are being given preferential treatment, but Nigerians, who were protesting, were being killed by the government. The government is the one behaving like a terrorist right now.”

Umahi dumps PDP for APC

Governor Dave Umahi

Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, has quit the Peoples Democratic Party, according to Punch.

The governor, on Tuesday, in Abuja, told the party’s leadership that he would join the ruling All Progressives Congress which he claimed would protect the interest of the South-East in the 2023 elections.

Reports say Umahi told the members of the National Working Committee of the PDP that his decision to join the APC was irrevocable.

The members of the PDP NWC, who were led to the meeting by its National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, were said to have tried in vain to convince the governor not to abandon the party.

Apart from Secondus, among those that were at the meeting at the Ebonyi Governor’s Lodge in Abuja were Deputy National Secretary, Agbo Emmanuel; National Organising Secretary, Austin Akobondu; Financial Secretary, Abdullahi Maibasira; National Women Leader, Mariya Waziri and Senator Sulieman Nazif.

The governor was said to be friendly when he received the PDP delegation, but stuck to his decision to leave the PDP when the issue came up.

It was gathered that the PDP delegation impressed it upon the governor that there was no need leaving the PDP for the APC, which they argued had become unpopular.

The Pentagon announced a string of resignations Tuesday, a day after US President Donald Trump tweeted his dismissal of Defence Secretary Mark Esper, reported Anadolu Agency.

“Today, Acting Under Secretary of Defence for Policy Dr. James Anderson, Under Secretary of Defence for Intelligence and Security Mr. Joseph Kernan and Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Defence Jen Stewart submitted letters of resignation,” it said in a statement.

The trio announced their resignations effective immediately.

“I want to thank Dr. Anderson, Admiral Kernan, and Jen Stewart for their service to the nation and the Department,” said Acting Defence Secretary Christopher Miller.

“Over their careers, each has contributed greatly to the national defence and the future of the Department of Defence. We wish them the best in their next endeavors,” he added.

According to the statement, Anthony Tata, Ezra Cohen-Watnick and Kash Patel have been promoted to the roles.

Trump said Monday he had “terminated” Esper and replaced him with Miller, who was serving as the director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Miller, a former Army Special Forces officer, is now the fifth person to lead the Defence Department during the Trump administration’s nearly four years.

Trump’s decision to remove Esper came just two days after he was projected to lose this year’s White House race to Democratic rival Joe Biden, who is now the president-elect.

PENGASSAN strike won’t cause fuel scarcity, NNPc assures

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Tuesday assured that the proposed strike by members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN) over disagreement with the Federal Government on the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) won’t lead to scarcity of petroleum products.

NNPC spokesman Kennie Obateru quoted Mele Kyari as saying in a release that the industrial action embarked upon by PENGASSAN would not lead to scarcity of petroleum products as all fuel stations and petrol depots in the country have enough stock of products to service consumers and are open for business.

While expressing hope that the industrial dispute would be settled amicably, Mr Kyari assured that the corporation has thus far emplaced a stock of over 2.9 billion litres of petrol to guarantee seamless movement of people, goods and services across the country in the forthcoming Christmas season and beyond.

The NNPC boss reiterated that the corporation is determined to make the 2020 end-of-year festivities a zero fuel queue period just like the preceding year, noting that critical stockholders in the petroleum products supply and distribution chain such as tanker drivers, depot owners and road transport owners have been mobilised to ensure hitch-free season.

Mamman Daura misunderstood by Nigerians – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, said that his nephew, Mallam Mamman Daura, is widely misunderstood by some Nigerians.

The president made this known in a statement signed by Garba Shehu, his Spokesman while felicitating with Daura on the occasion of his 81st birthday.

Buhari described Daura as one of Nigeria’s worthiest gentleman, dedicated public servant and a consummate administrator.

The president said Daura is a thoroughbred public administrator with an all rounded knowledge and experience in life and government.

He noted that “among Daura’s unappreciated virtues are his humility, compassion and zeal to provide mentoring to many who are privileged to be with him or close to him.”

Buhari said that Daura is needlessly misunderstood by many, adding that this is unusual “because many great men are not appreciated, which stems from the cynical obsession of many of his critics.”.

According to Buhari, Daura is a fountain of inspiration and an inexhaustible reservoir of knowledge.
