APC conspired to remove Jonathan, yet achieved nothing – Wike

0

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has again lashed out at the ruling All Progressives Congress for not fulfiling its campaign promises to Nigerians.

Wike also said the APC conspired to remove former president, Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

The governor noted that ahead of the 2023 general election, the “APC has again started making false promises”, parts of which are to construct a University of Transport, develop a deep sea port and industrial park in the State.

Wike made this assertion during the reception organised by the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party to welcome thousands of APC members back into PDP.

Leaders of the deflectors include former Director of Finance and Administration of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Henry Ogiri; APC South-South administrative officer, Gloria Boma; Mr. Lolo Ibieneye, and Alhaji Hassan Douglas.

The governor said prior to 2015, the APC had promised to transform the country, fix the East-West Road, and provide good governance to Nigerians, but that the party has continued to give excuses for its failure after it orchestrated the unfortunate conspiracy to remove President Goodluck Jonathan from office.

“Are things better today? So why do you allow people to tell you lies? How long can you continue to listen to the lies of the All Progressives Congress? They have nothing for Nigerians. It is unfortunate that there was a conspiracy to remove a Niger Delta person as President,” he stated.

China on Friday congratulated US President-elect Joe Biden on his victory against incumbent Donald Trump, more than a week after Americans cast their ballots.

Trump has so far refused to concede defeat, but numerous world leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, have already called Biden to congraulate him on his win.

Beijing finally broke its silence during a press conference held by its foreign ministry.

“We respect the choice of the American people. We express our congratulations to Mr Biden and Ms Harris,” said foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin at a press briefing, referring to incoming vice president Kamala Harris.

Wang said China understands “the result of the US election will be determined in accordance with US laws and procedures,”

The leaders of Russia, Brazil and Mexico are still holding back, saying they are waiting for the votes to be confirmed by the US Electoral College next month.

“We believe it’s correct to wait for the official results of the elections to be announced,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratuated Donald Trump immediately after he was declared the winner based on US media projections in 2016.

Biden reaches out to Europe

Biden made several telephone calls to European leaders on Tuesday to lay out his priorities for his forthcoming term.

But the Trump adminstration is refusing to recognise his victory.

That is despite the fact more US media outlets projected Biden to win the battleground state of Arizona on Thursday evening.

Fox News and the Associated Press already projected Biden to win the state last week.

Trump has refused to coordinate with Biden’s team to facilitate the handover of power.

The federal agency in charge of allocating funds for the transition of power is also yet to recognize Biden as the winner.

It means his staff cannot access information or intelligence briefings.

Covid-19: ‘We are not out of the woods yet’ – PTF warns Nigerians

1

THE Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Covid-19 has again warned Nigerians not to let down their guards in the fight against coronavirus.

Speaking at the PTF’s National Briefing on Thursday, the chairman of the task force  who doubles as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said Nigerians must prepare for a new wave of infections.

He urged Nigerians to take responsibility and keep the nation safe by adhering strictly to all Covid-19 preventive measures.

“On the African Continent, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia reported the highest cases in the last 24 hours. South Africa now accounts for 38% of total cases on the continent. Nigeria now ranks 6th down in Africa and we don’t have to let our guards down for a second wave,” Mustapha said.

“The number of cases has been fluctuating lately and that is an indication that we are not out of the woods yet. The cases in Lagos where multiple infections were recorded in two schools are typical examples of the danger of reopening institutions without the required measures.

“The PTF urges Nigerians to take responsibility to keep our nation safe by adhering to all Covid-19 preventive measures. It is our collective responsibility. We must all rally round each other to stop this pandemic from destroying our lives and economy.

“The PTF believes strongly that now is the time to raise the tempo of not just our national response but also our preparedness for a new wave of the pandemic or any other epidemic for that matter. For example, it has been strongly observed that places of worship, gatherings and other events have dumped the use of face masks and adherence to other NPIs.”

He noted that the task force is still concerned about the mental health of survivors of the disease, adding that it has intensified efforts to take care of them.

The SGF also urged Nigerians to come out for regular testing, lamenting the nation’s low testing rate.

“The PTF is still very much concerned about the mental health of survivors of the COVID 19 virus. In this regard the PTF is following reports from researches around the world regarding the state of psychiatric health of survivors and has intensified plans for in-country response under the treatment and post-treatment regimes,” Mustapha continued.

“Let me use this opportunity to urge all Nigerians to come out for regular testing. Our testing rate is very unencouraging. Mauritius has the highest tests per million (218,535) while Nigeria stands at 3,605 per million. This is grossly too low to be at a comfortable stage of defeating the pandemic considering the size of our population.”

Meanwhile, the PTF chairman commiserated with Ghanaians over the death of their former president, Jerry Rawlings, and the Palestinian authority over the death of PLO Chief Negotiator, Saeb Erakat, from COVID-19.

Mustapha also thanked all the task force’s development partners, including CACOVID and the media.

Covid-19: Getting vaccine matter of utmost concern for Nigeria, says Osinbajo

0

VICE-PRESIDENT Yemi Osinbajo has said getting the Covid-19 vaccine is a matter of utmost concern for the Buhari administration.

Osinbajo, who acknowledged that there are many priorities for Nigeria, noted that the lethal virus must first be put under control for the country to pursue its other objectives.

The Vice President disclosed this on Thursday at the opening of the virtual edition of the Paris Peace Forum.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, the forum featured presentations by some Heads of State and government alongside international organisations, on a collective response to the  Covid-19 pandemic.

The statement was titled “Getting Covid-19 vaccine a matter of utmost concern, says Osinbajo.

Akande quoted the Vice President as saying that “The priorities of Nigeria in the post Covid-19 era include improved healthcare and the economy.

“First, we need to keep the virus under control. While our guards are still firmly in place, getting the Covid-19 vaccine is a matter of utmost concern.

“On this, we are encouraged  by the efforts of WHO and other international agencies working to ensure that vaccine delivery will be equitable across all countries, regardless of the priority of orders and ability to pay.”

Underscoring the importance of prioritising interventions and investments in the healthcare system, the Vice President said “we are encouraging private investment to upscale our health sector, with emphasis on improved facilities and affordable universal healthcare.”

While appreciating leaders across the world for their prompt response and cooperation in controlling the spread of the Covid-19, Osinbajo said “the sheer scale of disruptions to our lives and livelihoods caused by Covid-19 certainly caught us all by surprise.”

Restating the call for debt relief for developing countries, the Vice President said “the pandemic underscores the need for adequate financial buffers to cope with the ‘black swan’ events.  For many developing countries, the debt burden makes this all but impossible.

“We call for debt relief for these countries, and the extension of the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI) at least until the end of 2021 as well as commercial debt relief where needed.”

Pope Francis, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, offered his congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden during a call Thursday morning.

According to a statement from the Biden-Harris transition team, the pair discussed some policy areas in which Biden is likely to break from President Trump.

“The president-elect expressed his desire to work together on the basis of a shared belief in the dignity and equality of all humankind on issues such as caring for the marginalized and the poor, addressing the crisis of climate change, and welcoming and integrating immigrants and refugees into our communities,” the statement reads.

Francis has been outspoken on these issues and has repeatedly called on global leaders to take more action to confront them. Biden has laid out ambitious plans to tackle the climate crisis, and he plans to lift the United States’ refugee resettlement cap, which Trump had lowered to a record level.

Biden will be the second Catholic president in U.S. history, following John F. Kennedy.
