Terrorism Lasting 20 Years: Shehu Sani Should Go Back to School

0

By Philip Agbese

Former Senator for Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, is a man to watch. He should be watched not because he is some star boy or role model that must be recommended to the upcoming generation to emulate, he should be watched closely because he has degenerated to a point where he has become a danger to himself and the society.

In the dire times the country has found herself in, at a time when the opposition has all but fizzled out from being a warming fire to become a mere heap of ash, with the best it has on offer being a career candidate who has made a habit of appearing on the ballot every other four years, Shehu Sani is exploiting the lacuna to posture as an influential voice. But far from it, if Sani’s voice is anything then it is in the league of a siren , one that will lure the unwary into ruins.

Sani plies his poison on Twitter and for good reasons. First, he knows social media in Nigeria is a space where trolls can cowardly hide behind their keyboards to malign others without repercussions; he would need to have more than the below two million followers he currently has for Twitter to consider his posts significant enough for moderation. Secondly, his tweets address an audience whose mental faculties are limited to 280 characters when processing information. Sani’s quality of intervention will not stand up to scrutiny when dissected by persons that are intellectually engaging.

This is why it is no surprise that Sani took to the same medium to unfairly castigate the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General TY Buratai, whose offence was stating that terrorism could persist another twenty years. This assertion, in Shehu Sani’s estimation is an admission of failure, one that should make Buratai resign. Of course, Sani’s band of urchins are jubilant at the barb he threw without taking time to understand the assertion beyond the limitation of 280 characters.

First, Sani’s followers failed to deconstruct their demagogue. Had they a deeper understanding of the man, they would have appreciated that the only credential he parades is that of being an activist, one that could not serve him usefully during his stint at the Senate, a position he lost because he never bothered to cultivate the needed democratic skills required for serving his constituents. His idea of democracy is limited to buying camels to slaughter for the electorates during Sallah. This should not be misconstrued as the failed senator being militarily savvy because he is not a good democrat. Far from it. Sani will fail more in the military than he failed at politics. He simply does not have the discipline to understand the nuances associated with securing a sovereign territory.

Now to the main issue. The point General Buratai made is trite. It is something that several people, a few of them experts had made in the past. It is that: the military may obliterate all Boko Haram’s members in a scorch earth campaign overnight, but the ideology already sowed by the terrorists will take a long time to wipe off just as the damages they have done will take possibly five decades to reverse, hopefully.

General Buratai’s assertion further speaks to the reality currently on ground. The Military is doing all it can to decimate and defeat Boko Haram. That assignment is like mopping water in a flooded room. Until the tap dripping water is turned off then the mopping will be eternal; even when the tap is turned off the broken and leaking pipes as well as seepages must be addressed for the mopping to work. So, as General Buratai and his troops continue to mop up Boko Haram terrorists, the tap must be turned off by way of stopping the foreign interests that prop up the terrorists, geo-strategic intervention like arming militias in Libya, Iraq and Syria must end so that arms destined for these groups do not flow into the hands of Boko Haram terrorists, countries that pay ransom for their conveniently abducted nationals simply to put money in Boko Haram’s coffers must stop.

The leaking pipes and seepages are the criminal politicians that make capital out of terrorist activities, the terrorist moles in the military and security architecture that provide credible intelligence to terrorists, the cyber warriors that unwittingly promote and publicize terrorist propaganda, the unscrupulous business men of diverse persuasions that sell arms and provide logistics to terrorists, the rogue clerics that preach extremism and indoctrinate young people, the foreign organizations that need the crisis to continue for them to sustain donor funding for their so called relief or human rights monitoring work, the war entrepreneurs that need crises to get contracts, corrupt officials that need the crisis as subheads in the budget to steal money, the perverts that finance the operations of the terrorists and a host of other undesirables.

Militarily defeating Boko Haram without attenuating these identified variables means that they will somehow interact and regroup the fighting arm of their operations within the shortest time. This is what has been happening and it is something that will continue to play on loop until Nigeria is able to identify those that fall into these categories and deal with the specific problem they constitute. It is the reality that will allow terrorism to persist for twenty more years and that is hoping that in that span of time the country somehow manages to unmask who these people are. It does not matter whether General Buratai is the one in the saddle or another commander. It is a problem that would not disappear overnight.

Perhaps one should recommend Shehu Sani to study countries that are dealing with terrorism to understand the dynamics and the life cycles of this problem, if that will not be too difficult for him. Indonesia, Malaysia, Philipines and Myamar are dealing with terrorism at a phase that is different from what Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and Yemen are dealing while the phases in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India are also different. In each of these countries, killing the leaderships of the terrorist organizations had not translated to instant peace. They adopt long term approaches to dealing with the residual and associated components of terrorism even when the militant arms of the terrorists have been decimated or defeated.

Interestingly, in the case of Nigeria, some of these problem components could be addressed with robust legislation. Something that Shehu Sani could have initiated when he was in the Senate. But he wasted the four-year chance he had to make impact because in the entirety of that time he confused activism for governance and never truly did things that matter. It is provident that the constituents he accidentally represented realized their mistake and promptly voted him out of the Senate, lest he would have been abusing their mandate to pursue his personal bitterness.

Unfortunately, with the much we have seen of Shehu Sani, he simply does not have the intellectual capacity to decode what General Buratai has said. He would need to go back to school to learn modern tricks like critical thinking in order to understand what is being said.

Why I supported Buhari instead of Jonathan in 2015 – Amaechi

0

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, says he is not tribalistic, hence supported President Muhammadu Buhari instead of predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

Buhari emerged President, defeating incumbent, Jonathan.

Amaechi, speaking in Port Harcourt on Saturday explained that whatever he says in Rivers State would happen, adding that he would soon return to declare prayers in the state.

He claimed that God gave him victory over Jonathan in 2015.

“You know, when Goodluck fought us, he was not fighting me, he was fighting God and I knew he would fail.

“Tell them from next year prayer will start, I will come to Port Harcourt like I used to come and I will say this will happen and it will happen.

“Let me tell you who I am; I do not drink, I have never tasted alcohol in my life, I don’t smoke; I am not tribalistic. Whether in Rivers State or in Nigeria, I am not tribalistic.

‘If I were tribalistic, President Goodluck Jonathan offered me the opportunity to remain in PDP, he offered me all sort of opportunities and I said that I have given my allegiance to Buhari because I am not tribalistic.”

North Korea executes man by firing squad for breaking COVID-19 restrictions

A North Korean citizen has been publicly executed by authorities for violating “emergency quarantine measures,” according to Radio Free Asia.

The November firing squad shooting of a man accused of smuggling with his Chinese business partners was ordered in an effort to scare other citizens into strict compliance with the totalitarian nation’s emergency lockdown measures, sources in the country told the international broadcasting corporation.

Despite sharing an 880-mile border with China, where the coronavirus originated, North Korea publicly claims it is free of the virus — but has implemented severe restrictions to prevent its spread, including locking down cities and counties, and banning travel between provinces.

In January, Beijing and Pyongyang closed the border over virus concerns, but smugglers who earn a living bringing Chinese goods into North Korea have continued to travel between the nations, prompting a series of harsher measures enacted last month, including anti-aircraft units and landmines along the border.

“Since the end of November, the Central Committee [of the Korean Workers’ Party] have ratcheted up the existing emergency quarantine measures to ‘ultra-high-level’ emergency quarantine measures,” a resident of North Pyongan province, on the border with China in the country’s northwest, told RFA’s Korean Service on Tuesday.

“The public execution happened because the victim was charged with violating quarantine right before the ultra-high-level emergency measures took effect around November 20th. A man in his 50s who tried to smuggle with Chinese business partners was shot as an example on November 28th,” the source said.

The source quoted in the article did not attend the public execution but had discussed it with a witness. According to that person, the shooting was moved away from the border to the victim’s home county in an attempt to keep news of the execution from seeping into China.

A North Pyongan official told RFA on Wednesday that citizens are becoming increasingly afraid over the ramped-up measures to control their movement.

“While guarding the border seamlessly from the ground, in the air, and at sea, authorities ordered soldiers to shoot anyone approaching the border unconditionally, regardless of who the person is or their reason for being in the area. It is an absolute threat to the border area residents,” said the second source.

“The Central Committee’s order to sound the alarm means we are to warn the people that those who violate the rules will be executed with a firing squad. Even during the Arduous March in the 1990s, when mass defections continued, the government did not threaten the residents of the border area like this,” the second source said, referring to the 1994-1998 famine that killed millions of North Koreans, as much as 10 per cent of the population by some estimates.

The second source said the public execution was in line with North Korean’s typical methods of making an example of someone to scare its people into compliance.

My visit to Kano not for political campaign — Tinubu

0

Former Governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu, has cleared the air on why he visited the ancient city of Kano on Friday.

Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said contrary to speculations he was not in Kano to discuss political matters but for a wedding.

Speaking at the airport on Friday night, Tinubu said: “I’m not in Kano for any political campaign, but to attend the wedding of a respected friend’s daughter.”

He also told the reporters that the unity of the country should be placed above other considerations, adding that he will continue  to strive to make it an indivisible entity.

Tinubu arrived Kano on Friday afternoon, in the company of a former interim chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande; former chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Alhaji Nuhu Ribadu and other notable members of APC.

He was at a reception organised to celebrate the marriage of the daughter of an Islamic scholar, Sheikh Muhammad Bin Uthman, the Chief Imam of Masjid-Al-Sahaba, held at Mosque Hunaisa Muhammad Bin Uthman.

The aborted Third Republic Senator said those promoting division in the country would stop at nothing to achieve their goal, stressing that those who are patriotic must therefore collectively work against those few divisive elements.

He lauded the Kano State governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, for his role in ensuring the unity of the country, as he further described him as one of the leading thinkers for national unity who deserve accolade.

He commended the Kano governor for many developmental projects he had been executing across the state.

He said: “From the airport to this place, I have seen so many developmental projects that add many positive things to the state.

“We are elated by your hard work and commitment towards developing the state. This is commendable.

“I urge you to continue developing the state. We all have faith in you and your patriotic posture.”

During his stay in Kano, the national leader visited his age-long friend, Alhaji Yusuf Ali and some notable Ulamas in the state capital, among whom were Sheikh Abdulwahb Abdulah, Sheikh Ibrahim Shehu Mai Ula and Sheikh Abdulgafar Kabara.

The Ulamas promised Tinubu their support and cooperation for whatever his decision is in 2023.

”We will support you on your future political ambition,” they said.

No quick fixes to combat security challenges, says FG

0

The Federal Government has asked Nigerians to exercise patience as it strategises on how to decimate insurgency in the country.

The government stated that the security challenges bedeviling the country cannot be effectively tackled in a hurry.

Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (Rtd) made the disclosure at the Nigerian Naval College, Onne, Rivers State today during the passing out parade and commissioning ceremony of 108 Naval cadets of the Direct Short Service 27.

Magashi, who was represented by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin, praised the Nigerian Navy for spearheading the fight against piracy, militancy and crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region.

He added that the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent civil unrest in the country has further exposed the delicate nature of human security.

He said, “I am most delighted to be in your midst this morning as the reviewing officer of this passing out parade in honour of 108 Naval cadets of the Direct Short Service Course 27.

“The Covid-19 pandemic and the civil unrest has further demonstrated the frailty and multiplexity nature of human security, apparently, there are no quick fixes to effectively combat security challenges bedeviling our dear nation.

Magashi assured of President Buhari’s commitment in the fight against internal and external aggression.

“It is, therefore, germane to appreciate the untiring support of Mr. President, Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of Nigeria, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, as he continues to demonstrate resolve and full support for the Nigerian armed forces through the resourcing of operational requirements and personnel welfare.

“It is against this background, that His Excellency recently approved the increase in the manpower intake of the armed forces to comprehensively tackle the multifaceted security threats across the nation.”

The speedboat reportedly capsized and three of them got drowned.

The deceased cops were being conveyed to their place of primary assignment when the incident took place.

Africa to lose 30 million jobs by end of 2020, says Adesina

0

President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, has alerted African leaders to the gloomy days ahead for the continent due to the negative impacts of Covid-19 on the economies.

Adesina spoke on Friday at the ‘Virtual 2020 International Forum on African Leadership’ in Ivory Coast.

Projecting what will become of the continent’s economies at the end of 2020, Adesina said Africa’s GDP will decline by $173-236 billion by the end of the year. Africa’s economic growth rate is expected to decline by 3.4%.

He noted that up to 30 million jobs will be lost in Africa by the end of 2020.

The former Nigerian Agriculture minister, who identified the lockdown occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic as the reason for the parlous state of Africa’s economies, however, noted that the development is global.

He said, “The negative impacts on economies have been massive. The African Development Bank estimates that Africa’s GDP will decline by $173-236 billion by the end of the year. Africa’s economic growth rate is expected to decline by 3.4%.

“The world has become more fragile as we all face common existential risks. All are affected, developed and developing countries. There’s no coronavirus for developed countries and coronavirus for developing countries.

“The pandemic has further laid bare the divide in the labour market. Those with skills are able to keep their jobs, while low-skilled workers, especially those employed in the informal sector lost jobs, worsened by the lockdowns. It is estimated that up to 30 million jobs will be lost in Africa by the end of the year.”

He urged African countries including Nigeria not to rely on debt for recovery but instead, better manage the revenue streams from their abundant natural resources.

Adesina further stated, “Building back African economies with resilience requires addressing its high debt levels. Total outstanding debt on the continent is over $700 billion.

“The lesson for Africa is clear: Africa simply cannot accelerate its development by relying only on debt, especially expensive bilateral and commercial debt. Africa must grow by mobilising domestic resources.

“Africa will build back faster by also harnessing and better managing the revenue streams from its abundant natural resources, including minerals, metals, biodiversity, blue economy, forest resources, agriculture and oil and gas, in order to boost domestic savings.”

“Africa must build back by focusing sharply on food and nutritional security. For many, the risk of hunger is higher than coronavirus. Without food, medicines or vaccines don’t work. There is vaccination against coronavirus, but there is no vaccination against hunger,” he added.

Napoli accuses Nigerian doctors of making Osimhen’s injury worse

Nigerian doctors have been accused of worsening Victor Osimhen’s shoulder injury while he was on international duty.
The Napoli striker dislocated his shoulder during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone in Benin City on 13 November, which ended 4-4.
He was stretchered off and taken straight to the hospital while the match was still on and he left for Italy the following day with suggestions he might require surgery.
He missed the return tie against the Leone Stars and has not played for Napoli since.
Now, according to Tuttosport, Napoli medics are claiming that Nigerian doctors did more damage to Osimhen’s shoulder as they tried to put it back into place.
Football Italia claimed on Saturday that medical staff of the Super Eagles tried to pop the dislocated shoulder back into place on the field, before he returned to Italy for tests and a specialist consultation.
The shoulder dislocation has reportedly fully recovered, but Osimhen still cannot lift his arm properly, allegedly because the Nigerian doctors used an incorrect technique which inflamed a tendon in his shoulder.
Napoli are said to be unhappy with the situation as their record signing, who cost them around €80 million, will need more recovery time.

Those working against Nigeria’s unity will fail woefully, Tinubu says

0

Former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has warned those working against the unity of Nigeria to desist from such acts as they will fail woefully.

Tinubu gave the warning in Kano State on Friday, December 4, when he spoke at the wedding Fatiha of the daughter of Islamic scholar, Sheikh Muhammad Bin-Uthman.

Tinubu maintained that he and other progressive democrats in the country will not allow “dividers” to achieve their selfish interest by coming together to “battle them to a standstill.”

“Dividers will not stop in doing things they think can divide us, but the truth of the matter is that we will not allow them to achieve their selfish interest,” Tinubu said.

The APC chieftain also called for peace and unity among Nigerians so that the “dividers can further fail in the bid to achieve their aim” because “Nigeria’s unity is one of the major areas that we should give more priority.”
