Banditry: Northern Patriots applaud Buratai, Nigerian Army’s Sahel Sanity for commitment to peace in the North-West

0

The Coalition of Northern Patriots (CNP) has hailed the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. T.Y Buratai for the success of the Nigerian Army’s Operation Sahel Sanity.

In a New Year message signed by its President, Nuruddeen Dodo, on Friday, the coalition said the COAS and his troops’ commitment to restoring peace have drastically reduced crime and criminalities in the North-West.

First launched in July last year in Faskari, Katsina State, Lt. Gen. Buratai vowed that the military exercise would comprehensively tackle banditry, kidnapping and cattle rustling in the region.

In September, the operation was extended to the North-Central region to ensure peace in all parts of the country.

And according to the coalition, the exercise has so far yielded positive fruits, bringing about the much-needed peace and tranquillity in the region by engaging criminal elements in ways too numerous to mention.

After considering the feat recorded, the group expressed confidence that the other regions will soon experience the same.

The CNP, however, called on all well-meaning Nigerians to extend support to the Nigerian Army’s operations in its bid to make Nigeria safe and secure for all.

Read the full statement below:

The Coalition of Northern Patriots wishes to commend Operation Sahel Sanity’s efforts in curtailing the excesses of armed bandits in North West Nigeria that has resulted in a drastic reduction of crime and criminalities in the North West region.

We wish to reiterate that since the launch of Operation Sahel Sanity by the Nigerian Army to combat armed attacks, cattle rustling, kidnapping and other criminal activities in North-West Nigeria, it has been a success story.

This feat was achieved through the troops’ commitment under Operation Sahel Sanity in ensuring that criminal elements operating in the region are neutralized and kept at bay.

We wish to state that in the North West today, incidences of Armed Banditry has been reduced to the barest minimum due to the presence of Operation Sahel Sanity in addressing the security challenges in the region.

The Coalition of Northern Patriots having reviewed the security situation in North-West Nigeria wishes to emphasize that Operation Sahel Sanity has brought the needed peace and tranquillity in the region by engaging criminal elements in ways too numerous to mention.

We are consequently applauding the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai that has been tireless in rendering service to the country despite the avalanche of conspiracies against the peace and progress of the country.

That Operation Sahel Sanity has recorded tremendous success in North West Nigeria indicates the laudable efforts of the Nigerian Army in internal security operations in Nigeria. This much has been the hallmark of the Nigerian Army’s involvement in internal security operations in Nigeria.

Thus, it is our considered opinion that indeed the Nigerian Army under the watch of Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai has contributed immensely to addressing the threats posed by criminal elements across the country.

The Nigerian Army has also stoutly risen in defence of our nascent democracy in the prosecution of the war against insurgency in North-East Nigeria and addressing the threats posed by militants and criminal gangs across the country.

The relative peace and tranquillity experienced in North-West Nigeria indeed buttresses this point and indicates that Nigeria shall overcome its security challenges with the right support.

The Coalition of Northern Patriots states in unequivocal terms that Operation Sahel Sanity is a huge success. It has contributed immensely in reducing the activities of armed bandits in the region.

We also wish to commend other security agencies that have an equally displayed outstanding commitment towards curtailing incidences of Armed Banditry in North-West Nigeria. Our considered opinion is that they are deserving of our commendation and support in the onerous task at hand.

The exigencies of time indeed require all hands to be on deck and support the laudable initiatives of the Nigerian Army in addressing the security challenges in the country.  The case of Operation Sahel Sanity is just a tip of the iceberg given the Nigerian Army’s commitment to preserving and protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

The Coalition of Northern Patriots herby sends a clarion call to all well-meaning Nigerians to extend support to the Nigerian Army’s operations in its bid to make Nigeria safe and secure for all.

The Operation Sahel Sanity example in North West Nigeria should indeed give insights into the fact that with the right motivation, the country’s security challenges can be addressed.

Thank you.

Fayemi to Launch Initiatives to Deal with Kidnapping, Banditry, Robbery: 2021

Fayemi to Launch Initiatives to Deal with Kidnapping

As a part of the efforts to make Ekiti State secure for investment and safety in 2021, the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, will launch a safety city venture to deal with all types of kidnapping, banditry, robbery, and different social menaces within the state.

To bolster harmonious government–workers’ relationship, Fayemi mentioned he would fulfill promises to recruit over 1,500 new employees into the teaching, healthcare, and various cadres of the civil service, in addition to paying all outstanding salaries, promotion, and pension arrears on account of lively and retired civil servants.

The governor spoke in Ado Ekiti Friday in a statewide broadcast to Ekiti residents commemorating the celebration of the New Year.

Besides the establishment of a network, codenamed “Amotekun” to strengthen security, Fayemi said he has continued to support the police, military, DSS, civil defence, Federal Road Safety Corps, NDLEA, and immigration with logistics and coordination to secure Ekiti.

“The new year will witness the launch of our secure city venture, in addition to different initiatives aimed at boosting safety and security within the state,” he stated.

On ways to put smiles on the faces of Ekiti workers, he said the government has commenced negotiations on the implementation of consequential adjustment for officers from levels seven, which he stated had been stalled by the outbreak of the pandemic.

“Those negotiations resumed last month for an eventual resolution. I once again, assure our esteemed workers and retirees that all the inherited salaries, pensions, and gratuities are not bad debts. All the inherited arrears will be cleared one after the other as things improve for our dear State,” he said.

Fayemi said in government’s deliberate effort to bring government closer to the grassroots, “we revisited the issue of Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) that were created from the existing local government areas in the state, on Thursday, June 26, 2014.

“The process of creating additional LCDAs is ongoing. The quest to create more LCDAs is not driven by political coloration, but for the socio-economic wellbeing of our people. I enjoin Ekiti-kete to work with the committee put in place for this purpose, for us to have a just and enduring outcome”.

He said the new year will also witness the commencement of the first phase of the Ado-Ekiti multi modal ring road project which has been awarded to Craneburg Construction Company to complement other road projects being executed across the three senatorial districts of the state.

Speaking on giant strides to uplift the infrastructural capacity of the state, Fayemi said: “I am happy to inform you all that despite the economic challenges of the year 2020, we are making remarkable progress with our Agro-Cargo Airport project and we are still on course for completion in 2022.

“I must commend the communities affected by the airport for their cooperation and Aare Afe Babalola, the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Nigerian Air Force for their collaboration and support to date.

“Electricity remains a sore point in many communities in Ekiti State due to the less than satisfactory supply by BEDC. Many of our people are rightly unhappy about the bad electricity supply to the state as we are in government.

“We’re working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria to enhance the transmission capacity within the state by creating an extra loop with the installation of 132-33kva substations in Ijesha-Isu and Ifaki.

“We are also working with the Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria on solar powered energy in various communities. Equally, the state has signed a contract for a three megawatt Independent Energy Project which is able to provide energy to all public establishments together with the Secretariat, road lights, Teaching Hospital, the State University, and Government Home.”

Fayemi added that he appreciated the truth that the year 2021 goes to be a really busy and thrilling year with political activities due to local government elections and the method of making LCDAs.

“The remaining half of my tenure is loaded with actions. However, I guarantee you of my avowed dedication to finish and commission all of the legacy projects we began, earlier than the end of my tenure in October 2022.

“The year 2020 has gone however left behind some momentous lessons and deliberate efforts should be made to build on the seen progress we recorded, in opposition to all odds. Subsequently, as individuals, state and government we should always strategy the year 2021, with the determination to get better-lost ground and restore lost hopes,” he mentioned.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, says the Nigerian army will shame and disgrace the Boko Haram and Islamic States for West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists in 2021.

Buratai gave the assurance at a sit-out night to usher in the 2021 New Year  at the TY Buratai Institute for War and Peace, Buratai in Biu Local Government Area of Borno.

We must not fail, we should see it as a challenge and a task that must be done to resolve it once and for all”.

“I want you to see it as a challenge and a task that must be done because we are the one that can do it because Nigerians believe in us and believe that we can do it.
“You should go into the year with full conviction that we can do better to address the insecurity in our country,” he said.

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his support and confidence in the Nigerian army during the preceding years.

The full text of the speech reads below:

NEW YEAR SPEECH BY HIS EXCELLENCY, MUHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

1ST JANUARY 2021

My fellow countrymen and women,

First, I would like to thank and praise the Almighty who saw us through the year 2020 and has given us the opportunity to witness the start of another new year. We especially thank God because the year 2020 was one of the most trying years since our existence as a Nation.

This can also be said about all other nations around the world, due to the challenges posed on our collective humanity by the novel COVID-19 pandemic.

While acknowledging that 2020 was a very tough year, we saw this year put to test our national resilience and ability to survive these tough times and also gave renewed hope that we will again brave any storms that lay ahead in 2021 and beyond.

As we celebrate the opportunity before us in this New Year 2021, we must also acknowledge the passing away of our brothers and sisters who didn’t make it into this New Year. May their souls rest in perfect peace.

We must remember that we also celebrated the historic occasion of our sixty years as an independent and sovereign country on October 1st 2020. In the spirit of hope and gratitude, I would like to remind us again that as a country on the difficult journey to nationhood and greatness, we have confounded the many pundits at home and around the world who never gave the newly-born country that emerged unto the world stage on 1st October 1960 a chance of surviving much longer than a few years.

Yet, here we are, 61 years by the next anniversary in October, and not only are we here, we are standing tall in the comity of nations as one country united under the will of God and also actively growing that indivisible Nigerian spirit that has enabled us, year after year, decade after decade, to weather all stormy waters and emerge stronger and better where others have fallen and disintegrated. This nation, this Nigeria will survive and thrive.

In this journey to nationhood, we have experienced the highs and lows. 2020 indeed came with a lot of challenges ranging from security and economic issues across the regions to understandable protests that were mainly led by our youths and served notice to the demand for police reforms and accountability. This government heard, this government listened and this government is committed to fulfilling the five demands of our youths, fully understanding that we all wish well for Nigeria.

In the midst of all these challenges, I had initially pledged that as your elected President and Commander-in-Chief, I would ensure that these ongoing challenges will be faced head-on with renewed determination and with all the appropriateness and urgency required. Your voices have been heard and we would continue to listen to you, and all the key stakeholders who are committed to the unity of Nigeria to ensure that every region of this nation is safe for us all, while guaranteeing that the future is also secure for the coming generation.

I wish to also use this occasion of New Year to reaffirm my commitment to the people of Nigeria, especially the youth who need our collective encouragement and support. In securing this nation we need to secure the future of our youth.

Our young people are our most valuable natural resource, at home and abroad. Their ingenuity, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit is evident to all. Many of our young people are excelling in various spheres of life including sports, entertainment, information and communication technology, commerce and are globally recognized as achievers.

As a Government we are committed to actively engaging with the creative energies of our young people. In this regard, we will partner with the legislature to develop an enabling environment to turn their passions into ideas that can be supported, groomed and scaled across regions. This will create vast opportunities in fintech, agriculture, business process startups and in the entertainment industry.

The year 2021 will indeed be a year where we will work to reinforce the hopes of fellow Nigerians in the vision of a united and progressive Nigeria. This administration would continue focusing on delivering key strategic priorities under our “SEA” – (Security, Economy and Anti-Corruption) Agenda. Some of the key priority areas we would direct our attention and strengths to include:

ON THE SECURITY:

Re-energizing and reorganizing the security apparatus and personnel of the armed forces and the police with a view to enhance their capacity to engage, push back and dismantle the operations of both internal and external extremist and criminal groups waging war against our communities in some parts of the country.

In line with the current security challenges, we are facing as a Nation, I would like to reiterate the promise I made recently when over 300 of our boys abducted from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara were successfully rescued by our security operatives.

The professionalism shown by our Security Forces and the collaboration from all stakeholders across both State and Federal Governments that led to the successful rescue of the boys is proof that Nigeria has the internal capacity to decisively deal with terror attacks on our citizens.

However, we recognize that we rapidly have to move to a more proactive and preemptive posture to ensure that these sorts of traumatic incidents do not become a norm. Our administration is fully aware of the responsibility we have to protect the lives and property of all Nigerians, and we will not relent in learning and adapting to changing threats to our national security and civic wellbeing.

ON THE ECONOMY:

Our focus is on revamping the economy through the national economic diversification agenda that supports the primary goal of national food self-sufficiency. This has helped reduce the growing food related inflationary figures and have in considerable measure positively impacted our food security status during the long months of the pandemic lock down.

We are also currently rebuilding our national infrastructure base and, in the process, introducing transformation through the rehabilitation, modernization, and expansion of the railway system, national roads and bridges both in rural and urban centres, alongside the airports and seaports.

The reforms we have put in place in the power sector would guarantee increased efficiency in our drive to significantly expand the generation and distribution of electricity for use in homes and factories.

As an administration we are currently undertaking a series of special interventions designed to boost job creation and support the entrepreneurial drive of our youths.

With the recent opening of our borders, we expect that the pent-up demand of legitimate cross-border and international trade will boost the fortunes of the many small businesses and agricultural enterprises that depend on Nigeria’s trade and commerce.

The message to our West African neighbours is that Nigeria is once again fully open for those willing to conduct business in a fair and equitable way.

ANTI-CORRUPTION:

On the anti-corruption drive of our administration, we have recorded substantial gains so far and this year, we are committed to continuing along the path of eradicating corruption, through collaboration with all the arms of Government to effectively prosecute this fight.

While we would be working with the Legislature to enact laws that would strengthen this fight, we would also be looking at reviewing some of our laws which would ensure that this fight is more effective. On the part of the executive, we would ensure the diligent and timely prosecution of corruption cases, while appealing to the judiciary to ensure that corruption cases are dispensed with expeditiously.

The persistence of various forms of violence has meant that in the most affected parts of the country, the fabric of inter-communal harmony woven through years of investment of effort at building trust, mutual respect, and harmony has been threatened.

Insecurity as a challenge has direct repercussions on our national economic stability, growth, and development, setting us back at critical points through the destruction of public and private investments.

In parts of the country where chronic poverty, social exclusion, and disillusionment among sections of the youth were already a problem, the cycles of violence that have been unleashed by mindless groups like Boko Haram and others have thwarted the efforts of government to undertake the social policy and associated investments that could make a huge difference in the quality of life of our citizens.

I am aware that for some of our compatriots, the progress we have registered since the inception of this administration is not nearly as fast or as sufficient as they would wish. I do not begrudge them their views in so far as they signify a wish, in which we all share, for only the very best for our country.

Nevertheless, I call upon all Nigerians to carefully recall the circumstances of our coming to office, the facts on the ground and the resources at our disposal since 2015 with the accomplishments of this administration.

As a people, we have shown admirable resilience in the face of every adversity, an unmatched capacity to recover speedily from every setback, an unparalleled generosity of spirit when we resolve our differences, and a constant readiness to invest faith and hope in the destiny we share as a united country built on the diversity of its peoples.

It is these attributes that underpin the Nigerian spirit of “can do, will do” that gives me hope that we shall yet get to destination and fulfill our calling together, especially with the solid resolutions we are setting in this new year.

Keeping our country on a forward march is a duty which we all have and share. In this regard, keeping our country safe from a resurgent cycle of COVID-19 as this administration finalizes its plans to procure and efficiently and effectively distribute the COVID-19 vaccines, I urge you all fellow citizens to observe strict COVID-19 prevention protocols.

As your elected President, my pledge to you is the same as it has always been; I will play my part fully and without fear or favour. I invite all of us to do the same. It is what we owe to the founding generation of our beloved country and also to the coming generation. It is what we desire for national prosperity for all demands.

Long Live the Nigerian spirit of oneness, togetherness, and unity. Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I wish you a Happy and prosperous New Year.

May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Airstrikes take out terrorists’ base, crush scores of ISWAP fighters at Tumbun Gini in Borno State

0

The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has killed several Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements and destroyed their hideouts at 1Km North of Tumbun Gini on the fringes of Lake Chad in Borno State.

This according to the Coordinator Defence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche was achieved through air strikes executed on Tuesday after series of aerial surveillance missions had indicated that the location, with structures and logistics items camouflaged under the dense vegetation, was being used as staging area where some ISWAP leaders and their fighters meet to plan and launch attacks.

”Accordingly, the ATF dispatched a force package of Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets and helicopter gunships to attack the location in successive passes.

”The attack aircraft scored devastating hits in the target area, destroying some structures and neutralizing several of the ISWAP fighters while some survivors were seen fleeing the scene.

”Consequently, the fleeing ISWAP survivors were hit by second rockets and subsequently moped up.” He added.

Ikpeazu added: “Nobody has been able to convince me that there is a better party for us here in Abia than the PDP. I am a strong member of the PDP and a leader in the party.

President Muhammadu Buhari signed the country’s 2021 Bill on Thursday to unfold borrowing plans soon

0

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Thursday, signed the country’s 2021 Appropriation Bill and 2020 Finance Bill into laws, thereby enabling their implementation to commence by January 1, 2021, and ensuring the continuation of the January-December cycle.

In signing the N13.59tn budget, however, Buhari said he was aware of the changes the National Assembly made to the proposal he submitted.

He said his regime would examine the changes and, where necessary, approach the lawmakers with a request for amendment, virement, or other appropriate adjustments.

The President signed the document at a brief ceremony held at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and witnessed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; leaders of the National Assembly, and federal executive council members.

The National Assembly had last Monday passed the appropriation bill, raising the total estimates from the proposed N13.08tn to N13.59tn, an increase of over N500bn.

Buhari had on October 8, 2020, laid the money bill before a joint session of the National Assembly.

In signing the document, Buhari said, “The 2021 Budget that I have just signed into law provides for aggregate expenditures of N13.58tn, representing an increase of N505.61bn over the initial executive proposal.

“The increase, however, includes the N365bn provision for upscaling the Nigeria Social Investment Programme, which I requested after laying the budget before the legislature.

“The details of the budget as passed by the National Assembly, and signed into law by me, will be provided by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, subsequently.

“In designing the 2021 budget, we deliberately chose to pursue an expansionary fiscal policy. As you are all aware, our economy recently lapsed into its second recession in four years.

“I mentioned during the presentation of the 2021 Appropriation Bill that we intend to use the budget to accelerate our economic recovery process, promote social inclusion, and strengthen the resilience of the economy.

“All ministers are to ensure that their supervised ministries, departments, and agencies achieve the objectives set for their sectors.

“I am aware of the changes that the National Assembly has made to the 2021 Executive Budget proposal.

“We will examine these amendments and, where necessary, I will revert to the National Assembly with a request for amendment, virement, or other appropriate adjustments to ensure that the core objectives of the budget are accomplished.”

The President noted that in spite of the adverse impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the nation’s economy and government’s revenues, his regime made appreciable progress in the implementation of the 2020 budget.

He added, “As in December 2020, we had released about N1.75tn out of a total of the N1.96tn voted for the implementation of critical capital projects, representing a performance of about 89.1 percent.

“The overall performance of the 2020 budget currently stands at an impressive rate of 97.7 percent.

“The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning will provide further details on the 2020 Budget’s performance, in due course.”

Buhari described the 2021 budget as critical to the delivery of the legacy projects of his regime.

To fully achieve the objectives, he said, the effective implementation of the 2021 budget was imperative.

Buhari said his regime was intensifying domestic revenue mobilization efforts so that it can have adequate resources to fund the 2021 budget.

He, therefore, asked revenue-generating agencies to work hard to meet their targets while threatening to sanction the heads of defaulting ones.

Being a deficit budget, the President said he would be sending the specific borrowing plan to the National Assembly soon.

He however promised that all borrowings will be judiciously utilized.

Speaking on the specific borrowing plans to be forwarded to the National Assembly and the use of over N3tn to service debts, both the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, urged Nigerians to focus on what the loans would be used for.

They both described borrowing as a natural option when revenue is low and assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would ensure all monies borrowed must be used for the capital projects they were slated for.

The demolition of FESTAC Market is wrong: Ayodele Okunfolami

0
Ayodele Okunfolami

The demolition is wrong, argues Ayodele Okunfolami

Christmas wasn’t merry for owners of shops and traders at 23 road Market. Before the dawn of Saturday, December 12, 2020, bulldozers were already bringing down structures in that market to the ground. Unaware of the development, traders scurried to secure their wares only to be scared off the scene by policemen shooting into the air affirming the suspicions that it was a state-backed move.

Read also: Ayefele’s Studio Demolition: Oyo Govt Denies Knowledge

Enquiries from some Amuwo Odofin Local Government officials on reasons why the market was felled saw them stammering from the market being a store of weapons to a den of hoodlums and prostitution. When further probes exposed the dim-witted explanations their combined IQs could produce, they resorted to the usual get-out-of-jail “it was ordered from above” detaching themselves as usual from an invisible government they are supposed to be part of. They now iced their sour cake with “an ultramodern market” that would be built in its place.

Now there are two main markets in Festac. The status of the first, Agboju (2nd Gate) Market has been in contention since Festac’s existence. However, because the market is not in the original plan for Festac, 23 road Market was constructed by the government. Unfortunately, being a major bus stop that connects Agboju suburb, the market forces that brought Agboju Market into existence, still prevails. When one now adds the competition for market spaces because of an exploding population, Agboju Market has survived all attempts by the authorities to have it relocated.

Read also: Rivers APC faults market demolition

So while traders at Agboju Market trade with an uncertainty of where next to pitch their tents, 23 road Market, which has now been flattened, was supposed to be the legal government-approved market. In order words, the government chose to leave the ‘illegitimate’ Agboju Market and bulldozed the legal market. The government now wonders why nobody takes their COVID-19, environmental, and traffic laws seriously because they have in more ways than one proven it is better to be wrong.

First, it is a failure of government that illegal structures stand for long from foundation to decking to habitation with authorities turning a blind eye only lamely and occasionally “X” it with red paint. Secondly, they immorally continued collecting taxes and levies in the name of revenue from those traders without hinting them formally that their stalls would be brought down soon.

By the way, what is this culture of demolishing structures, that more often than not are reasons, that are not in tandem with the personal temperament of the executives? The other day, I watched as one of the South-South governors dressed in military fatigue was taunting that any house found to be granting sanctuary to kidnappers and other criminals in his state would be demolished. That is how his colleagues who have no history of making a decent profit from real estate bring down what they term shrines, baby factories, or other criminal abodes. Even if those buildings are crime quarters, is bringing them down justified? Are there no better economic and legitimate ways to fight the vice and bring the criminals to book?

That is why the archaic Land Use Act that puts undue ownership of land in the hands of governors should be repealed. Today, practically every recreational park, green zone, tourist attractions, and other ecosystems have all been sold to private hands turning our cities into concrete jungles. And if any part of Nigeria has suffered this reckless sale and conversion of hallowed spaces, it is Festac.

Besides suffocating the livelihoods of hundreds that do business there and throwing the thousands more that depend on them into poverty, Festac now has been turned into an urban mess. Left with no choice, traders now erect their tents on pedestrian walkways. From the sale of cars to fabrics to household items to children wares to barbeques to hairdressing, everything is on the pavements. This has killed the beauty of Festac and makes motoring view difficult and strolling unpleasurable. And this is not just a Festac phenomenon, go to Oyingbo and see the clutter the “’ ultramodern terminal” has turned that place into.

Another thing that those responsible for bringing down the market need to explain is how they didn’t see the potholes along the stretch of that same 23 roads and practically every other road in Festac. Whichever way they brought in their excavators, the roads are bad and almost in disuse. If they entered through the 3rd gate, 7th avenue is no more motorable. When exiting, traffic builds up because of the deep potholes at the junction that connects 2nd avenue and 1st avenue. Somehow, it is only the demolition of lockup shops at 23 road Market without an ounce of compassion that requires swift attention whereas 11 road and other petty repairs they claim they are working on is in a race with Lagos-Badagry Expressway on which will finish last.

Lagosians have seen enough ultramodern structures and are in no way impressed. “Ultramodern” is just another way of rewarding some oligarchs by seizing what is supposed to be a collective patrimony. The ultramodern Tejuosho market is yet to be optimized because it has been priced beyond the reach of traders and that is very likely to repeat itself in Festac.

Another question to ask is why it is only ultramodern markets, ultramodern stadiums, ultramodern terminals, ultramodern airports, ultramodern this-or-that that our leaders keep ticking as dividends of democracy? When will they start building ultramodern schools with matching ultramodern libraries and science laboratories? When will governance be benchmarked by ultramodern hospitals with proportionate ultramodern equipment and surgical theatres? It is ultramodern citizens that would build ultramodern cities.

How will Nigeria attract foreign investments when the businesses of locals are insecure because of rash government actions like the demolition of that market?

Many things bedevil Lagos markets. From siting to structure to security to safety to sanitation to space as the frequent fire outbreaks in markets have shown but flattening them only compounds the problem. What the government should be looking at is proper town planning that situates our markets appropriately, ensuring there are security and firefighting posts; fixing the infrastructural deficits that see almost all our markets without toilets and running water, and regular environmental inspections to guarantee hygiene and quality of products.

Also, the price of owning shops, like every other property in Lagos, is stratospherically high. Moving forward, cheap but durable materials should be used to build modest markets instead of turning all our markets into Western-style malls. Then if Trader Moni, Market Moni, and other cash transfer schemes could reach traders, there should be a mortgage plan for traders to be able to own ordinary and cheap stalls.

So what happens to those that have suddenly lost their shops soullessly? We are most likely to hear that they would be compensated. However, such monetary recompenses not only come with several unassailable hurdles for the supposed beneficiaries but they just veiled corruption subheadings.

What I advise is that Lagos State Government should look more institutionally about markets and the merchants. Just as drivers are licensed, traders too should not only have permits to sell but licensed to sell their proposed products at approved locations. More importantly, traders and markets, in general, should all be insured so that when unforeseen circumstances like the market destruction or market inferno occur, it would be the insurance companies and lawyers that will settle it and not the government taking out unbudgeted funds to compensate.

PMB and Burden Of Healing Broken Bones

My New year Epistle to Nigerians

By Philip Agbese

This present generation has had their diaries well filled with details of their vivid share in first-hand history experience of insurgency in their life time, in which these verbose experiences may well be defined by the success or failure of the anti-terrorism efforts across our country. Since al-Qaeda first emerged in 1988 and subsequently carried out attacks on American soil in 2001, terrorism has manned the stage as its religious oriented versions spread across the globe. Rescuing the world from the mindless savagery, which is the hallmark of terrorism, requires sincerity and focus.

However, it also requires that differences are set aside to deal with what is proving to be a long- term threat to the survival and continuity of the human race. The terrorists had grown to their strongest when these same parties had been at each other, which go to prove that terrorism requires a divided society to thrive. Undoubtedly, we would say that insincerity, disunity, low level of transparency, and disruptive solidarity in our armed forces has been the bane of their existence over time before the current service chiefs were appointed under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. This has made them looked like a rooted mountain which is unmovable.

Tragically, much like the early days of fighting ISIS, when nations and world powers were divided on how to proceed, Nigeria’s war against terrorism has been massively crippled by the factors that have handed the advantages over to terrorists. The early days of Boko Haram, when the terror group could have been nipped in the bud, were characterized by denial and blame trading. It was a season when those who should have effected changes were more interested in finding faults and persons on whom to pin a complex problem. The halfhearted tactics and approaches adopted at that time allowed Boko Haram to thrive and to commit acts of terror without hindrance or being halted.

The national awakening to the true evil nature of Boko Haram in recent years has fortunately been matched by a military that is committed to defending the country from terrorists. This development has seen genuine efforts to fight terrorism even amidst intractable problems that tend to make solutions futile, simply on account of the divisiveness that persists even in the face of the threat to the collective wellbeing of the Nation.

Instead of seeing Boko Haram and other terror groups as the enemies, Nigerians are being manipulated into seeing the military as their enemy while inconsequential differences like religion and ethnicity are highlighted to the zenith.
I applause the statement made by Lt. Gen. William G. Pagonis, which goes thus, “Combat is never a comfortable or enjoyable experience and can’t be made so. But the soldier who is eating well, has adequate supplies and modern equipment, and also feels that he is being supported both by the Army and the civilian population, will perform far better than the one who feels neglected.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has been working tirelessly in order to bring the country Nigeria out of the rubbles and dirt the past administrations had brought it down to. It is therefore surprising to hear a cleric spit out baseless criticisms and vile statements aimed at the President and his administration.

Bishop Kukah’s statements at the funeral mass for a seminarian who was killed after he and some others were kidnapped from a seminary in Kaduna state were nothing but fallacious statements aimed at aiding inimical propaganda and create unnecessary hostility. The statements made by the bishop was only intended to demoralize the president, the service chiefs and other members of parliament who have relentlessly given their all to the country in spite of the many challenges that they face. This is a very mindless act to stir up rancour in the hearts of Nigerians.

We have all enjoyed a peaceful yuletide thanks to the efficiency and dedicated efforts of the service chiefs. It is imperative to note that these crop of service chiefs which the bishop so blatantly criticized have made numerous achievements than all their predecessors in the history of Nigeria. These men were appointed at a time when the Nigerian military was in shambles and on the verge of being overrun by these barbaric terrorists. In spite of all these, they have successfully restructured the Nigerian military and shaped it into one of the best in the world. Today our children can enjoy and celebrate the season in peace.

We all know that the people of Nigeria are highly religious people and they follow the teachings of their various religious leaders. In lieu of this, It is highly immoral and witless for Mr Kukah to use his seat as an instrument to create discord and tarnish the image of the Nigerian government. No religious leader should use his position to propagate malicious propaganda as Mr Kukah has done. It is a big shame to the bishop and doesn’t speak well of the Christian community. The bishop is a man people admire so much, but his malicious comments are rather unfortunate. His statements are misleading and only serve to pulverize the confidence and love the citizens of Nigeria has for the current president and his administration. Mr Kukah should use his pulpit to spread the gospel rather than to carry out the biddings of disgruntled elements who are ‘Anti-Buhari’. The bishop would do well to remember that the pulpit is for the gospel and not for politics.

In contrast to Mr Kukah’s statements, Nigeria’s economy is on the steady rise under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari. Insecurity is gradually being defeated, and there has been a significant decline in unemployment compared to about six years ago. President Muhammadu Buhari is not a magician who could just wave a wand of leadership and all the current problems of Nigeria would go away. It is a very daunting task and doesn’t take a short time for any leader to correct many years of mistakes and poor leadership by past administrations.

The year 2020 has left the nation unperturbed about the news of insurgency, but only by political aspirational battles which they masked with the name “INSURGENCY” in vile manner in order to destabilize President Mohammadu Buhari’s regime, unlike how heartbroken it has been in recent years.

Unlike the vivid happenings that persisted for more than ten years now, the dreaded and blood-thirsty members of the insurgent group called Boko Haram have held the nation and some African states in the jugular. They have continued to spill blood and bile, kidnap, rape and rob, especially in the North Eastern part of the country and beyond, without restraint.

On their part, the Nigerian armies have embraced the challenge with vigor, and vivacity. They have exhibited unequalled and unrestrained gallantry. They have put their lives on the line to see to the end of insurgency and banditry which they fought tooth and nail.
As reported by The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the President addressed the issue of insurgency this year in the Combined Passing Out Parade for 67 Regular Course and Short Service Course 46 (Army) at the Nigerian Defence Academy , Kaduna.
The President was the reviewing Officer during the passing out parade
“We remain focused in the fight against insurgencies arm banditry and others forms of criminality across the nation. “ We remain committed to ending the security challenges bedeviling the country.“ I am confident that the training received by the passing out cadets has adequately equipped them to face any challenges in their line of duty. ”

Buhari noted that the cadets had gone through rigorous and demanding tasks, and were undoubtedly infused with a sense of self-esteem, efficacy and accomplishment
Global Amnesty Watch also revealed why the Nigerian military has been able to sustain its victory over insurgency within the year. The UK-based organization also revealed that from its findings, the military operation in the northeast has successfully liberated the towns and villages that came under the control of insurgents. According to GAW, the military has been able to achieve all these feats due to its highest level of transparency and intelligence in this present administration.
Part of the success recorded in these years was how the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole in the North-East have engaged some Boko Hara terrorists who attempted to infiltrate the Nigerian Army location at 3 Battalion in the Gamboru area of Borno state, during which scores of the fighter were shot dead. The troops seized three gun trucks, two anti-aircraft guns, two AK-47 rifles and one rocket propelled grenade tube from the insurgents.

Before the current president assumed office, the evil Boko Haram sect and other clandestine forces rained havoc especially in the Northern Eastern Part of Nigeria. Bomb explosions and senseless killings were left unchecked by the Nigerian military due to poor leadership back then. But today, we saw the gallant act by the Chief of Army Staff who relocated to the North-Eastern part of Nigeria in order to lead the war against terrorism at the forefronts.

The president has done his best to combat corruption, tackle insecurity, tackle unemployment, grow the economy and many others. He has made significant progress in all these areas despite the many challenges he has been faced with. Let us all shy away from criticizing the government at every given opportunity. Let’s give the president more time to heal the broken bones of our country Nigeria. Let us also work together to provide all the necessary support that he needs in order to achieve this.

By now, we should understand that what Baba has achieved so far is to first rescue the nation from drowning into oblivion. He has spent his first 4 years rebuilding the nation from its decay, and now it’s time to build on that foundation.

Amidst the passion and vibrancy of the Nigeria armed force put into this fight, and amidst the emotions shared with every broken bone, the President, Muhammadu Buhari has pledge his unending support in cash, kind and military equipment purchase, in bid to foster peace and unity in the country by putting an end to insurgency and Banditry. Healing will come in 2021, let’s give PMB all the unending support needed to achieve this vision.
