GOC 7 Div. supports over 1,000 disabled persons with relief materials, cash in Maiduguri

0

Maj.-Gen. Abdul Khalifa, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, on Tuesday supported 1,000 persons with disabilities with relief materials in Maiduguri, Borno state.

Presenting the items to the beneficiaries, Khalifa, who was represented by Lt.-Col. Andrew Wuyep, Commander of 195 Battalion of the Army, disclosed that the gesture was in continuation of its efforts toward supporting the vulnerable groups.

He said that the event, which witnessed the distribution of foods, drinks, noodles, clothes and undisclosed amount of money was meant to improve the living standard of the beneficiaries.

He said “It is our monthly tradition to invite persons with disabilities within the communities and support them with relief materials.

“We also provided cash support to them and engaged them to pray for victory for the unity of the country, our leaders as well as our troops that are executing the counter insurgency campaign in the frontline.

“In addition, we selected some days where they usually come together to recite the 60 verses of the Holy Qura’an, dedicated for the restoration of lasting peace in Borno state and the country.

“We have initiated several programs as part of our efforts geared at winning the hearts and minds of the civil population to support the army’s counter-insurgency campaigns in line with the goals of the Chief of Army Staff.

“We are at a time that the experiences of the ravages of terrorism need to be overcome not just through the use of the repressive apparatus, but also through enhancing the relationship between the military and the people for law and order to be sustained and peace and security to endure.

“In life, certain experiences could turn out to offer opportunities in ways never envisaged towards building a more peaceful, more prosperous and more secure society.

“It is therefore important to note in all these that it was not enough to leave issues of security to the military, police and other sister agencies alone; civilians also have a role to play to ensure their security and safety and sustenance of peace.

“The relationship between the military and the civilian population has greatly improved as gone are the days that civilians are apprehensive resenting their support to the Nigerian Army.

“This is no doubt the result of a conscious efforts to bring the community close. The community has also shown that it can be trusted to play a positive role to enforce law and order and build a safe and secure society,”said the GOC.

The GOC reiterated the determination of the Nigerian military to restoring lasting peace and normalcy in the entire North-East and urge the people to support the campaign to end terrorism.

In his remarks, Abubakar Bulama, one of the beneficiaries, commended the GOC for identifying with the persons with disabilities.

Bulama appeal to the government to revive it’s skill acquisition and vocational training centers in the state to enable them engage in empowerment activities that would open doors of opportunity for them.

He listed some of the skills they could be empowered on to include; cap knitting, shoe making, tie and dye, beads makings as well as insecticide production among others.

He urged well meaningful Nigerians and the humanitarian agencies to compliment the efforts of the army and government toward supporting persons living with disabilities in the state.

New COAS a courageous, innovative officer – Military sources

…His redeployment from Op Lafiya Dole was call to higher responsibility

Indications have emerged that contrary to insinuations making round in a section of the media, the 2017 redeployment to the Army Headquarters of the erstwhile Theater Commander, Op Lafiya Dole, Gen Ibrahim Attahiru, was premised on needs assessment and a call to higher responsibility.  According to a source conversant with the military, redeployments are normal exercise in the military and do not necessarily mean vote of ‘no confidence’ in the affected officers.

This is coming against the backdrop of some headlines that appeared in a section of the media immediately the General was appointed on Tuesday to replace Gen Buratai as the Chief of Army Staff by the President Buhari. The media reports tended to deride the new Chief over his tenure as Theatre Commander, Op Lafiya Dole.

“Gen Attahiru is a fine officer. He had distinguished himself in every position or ranks he found himself in the Army. He has served in various capacities and in various commands, including as the Director of Army Public Relations, GOC 82 Div and Theatre Commander, Op Lafiya Dole, among other staff positions in the army. Any where he served, he always left his mark as a courageous, innovative and patriotic officer who was determined to leave the place better than he met it”, says the source.

Another source revealed that on assumption of duty as Theatre Commander Operation LAFIYA DOLE on 30 May 2017, Gen Attahiru quickly carried out evaluation of the operational situation of the thearter. The evaluation led to the crucial decision to swiftly establish Fire Support Coordination Cell (FSCC) which was employed continuously to degrade the BHT in their enclaves and staging areas.

According to the source, those FSCC carried out artillery and aerial bombardments in conjunction with the Air Component of Operation LAFIYA DOLE on isolated BHT enclaves killing several BHT and destroying their logistic base. Another upshot of the evaluation is the creation of dugouts along BHT crossing points to deny the group freedom of action and stem the conduct of their nefarious activities.

It was also under his short reign that the theatre was rejigged with the inauguration of Mobile Strike Teams (MSTs) in August 2017 to reinforce the Mobile Brigade Concept (MBC) adopted in the Theatre to facilitate the quick defeat of the BHT.

To improve general operational vibrancy and troops’ responsiveness, he set up a Special Forces In-theatre Training Team in August 2017. The team was saddled with responsibility of retraining and refreshing troops on the fundamental concepts and skills of marksmanship, convoy and anti-ambush drills among others. The period also witnessed the Operation DEEP PUNCH 2 which orchestrated series of precursor operations, including clearance operations, long range fighting patrols, ambushes, blocking operations as well as cordon and search operations.

As a matter of fact, during that short period, 5 high profile BHT commanders and many foot soldiers were killed, while many other members of the group surrendered owing to the effectiveness of the operations.

“Gen Attahiru also ensured that Non-kinetic operations were also conducted through coordinated media and information operations that led to the surrender of 72 BHT, who were immediately inducted into Operation SAFE CORRIDOR.

“It was also during his time that the Theatre Command equally facilitated enhanced security on the Lake Chad through continuous clearance of water weeds and patrol of the waterways resulting in lifting of ban on fishing activities in the Lake and the gradual restoration of economic activities thereby providing a lifeline and bringing succor to the indigenes”.

“It is very obvious that most of the media report about him today were sponsored by those who lost out in the battle of wits that climaxed with his eventual appointment as the new Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian Army”, our source concluded.

Gen TY Buratai: The General who led from the front

0

By Philip Agbese

Change is inevitable. But whenever it occurs, what comes to mind is how those exiting would be remembered.
For the outgoing Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), the answer is very simple; he would be remembered as the Army General who led his troops from the front.

That simple description sums up the difference between the outgoing Army Chief and others and in combat operations it means a lot.

It is akin to putting one’s life on the line to motivate others. Tales of military conquests are usually designed to fit the eppaulets of top commanders whether physically present at the action spot or through delegated orders.

But with Butatai, the courage is constant as he prefers to be in the trenches, feel the pulse of his fighting men and lead the battle from the front when the occasion demands.

He is known to have relocated to the Northeast and personally led various  onslaught against the Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists with great success.
It was through such processes that the outgoing Chief of Army Staff has been able to save the lives of no less than 30 million people directly and that of over 160 million people indirectly.

Before Butatai was appointed Army Chief, Adamawa State which has a population of 4,248,400 people, Borno State with 5,860,183 and Yobe with 3.4 million were all under threats of annihilation.

No less than 20 number of local governments within the three states which are bigger than some countries,  were taken over by Boko Haram terrorists as people were constantly being killed, abducted, harassed and terrorised.

General problems of insecurity pervaded the landscape. In the Northeast, it is said that since 2009 when the Boko Haram started, the groups have killed tens of thousands of people and displaced about 2.5 million people and the zone was experiencing severe humanitarian crisis which left about 7.7 million people in need of humanitarian aid.

In the Northwest, problems of banditry escalated as communities were sacked and people abducted. It was almost the same in the Northcentral were abductions for ransom became the order of the day and attacks on communities increased.

Such criminal activities even extended to the southern parts of the country where cases of kidnap and other criminal activities including secessionist bids heightened.

But by the time General Buratai and his colleagues moved into action  most of these acts of terrorism were curtailed reducing for instance, the number of Boko Haram attributed deaths in the Northeast from more than 5,000 in 2015 to hundreds in 2020.

The presence of the Chief of Army Staff, at the battlefield was of great positive effects to the troops.
It made them to push hard until they penetrated the fortresses of the insurgents and subdued them in their numbers within the first six months of his assuming office .

The army was able to sustain the pressure on the terrorists that the Boko Haram leader, Abubakar  Shekau was heard in an audio tape begging for mercy and since then Nigerian  troops continued to dominate the fight foiling every attempt by the insurgents to launch attacks and capture territories.

The  height of it was the release of the over 300 boys at a secondary school in Kankara, Katsina State.

Many did not know the antecedents of General Buratai and probably what made him to be chosen as the Chief of Army Staff.

General Buratai was the Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), a military co-operation between Nigeria, Niger, Benin, Chad and Cameroon to fight Boko Haram terrorism.

He was specifically chosen to head the 5-Nation organisation because of an experience that almost ridiculed the combined efforts of these countries.

In January 2015, Boko Haram attacked the MNJTF headquarters in Baga in Borno State, overran the place and went ahead to massacre innocent civilians in the town.

That experience was one of the lowest points for the Nigerin Armed Forces  as many claimed soldiers took to their heels in what was later described as tactical manoeuvre.

The incident led to the reorganisation of the outfit and General TY Buratai was appointed to head the restructured outfit as the first Nigerian to occupy that position.

From then, the five countries began to witness improvements in their security and Nigeria was able to hold an election in March of that year.

It was not surprising therefore that President Muhammadu Buhari would appoint General TY Buratai as the Army Chief shortly after inauguration as president of Nigeria.

Apart from combat operations, General Buratai during his tenure enhanced civilian military coperation in Nigeria that people no longer see the Army as a force of occupation but as partner in progress.

The army under him has built bridges, roads, hospital and schools for communities in line with the Army’s improved  Civil-Military relations activities or Corporate Social Responsibility.

The Nigerian Army for instance set up an isolation centre at 32 Artillery Brigade, Owena Cantonment, Akure, in Ondo State to help  put an end to Covid-19,  established the Nigerian Army University Biu, and a 200 bed Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Maiduguri, Borno State to cater for the health needs of soldiers who sustained injuries while fighting the counter-insurgency war and to serve people in the immediate communities among other things. The nation actually knew it had a General in Buratai who led from the front at all fronts!
