Orlu: Groups Faults IPOB, Eastern Security Network Over The Killing Of Innocent Citizens

0

The Igbos in Nigeria Movement (INM) has condemned the killing of innocent citizens by members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) on Monday in Orlu, Imo State.

The group, in a statement on Tuesday, said such lawlessness is unacceptable in the interest of peace and tranquility in the South-East and South-South.

Recall that fugitive leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, had in December announced the formation of the ESN, which has extensively recruited gullible youths into its fold.

Many Nigerians have criticised the outfit, described as a regional military force or IPOB private army.

And in a statement signed by Mazi Dike Christopher, its Director of Mobilization and Enlightenment, the INM said the sole purpose of the ECN is to instigate violence, create chaos and carry out nefarious activities that would lead to loss of lives and destruction of properties.

According to Christopher, Monday’s incident in Orlu again brings Nnamdi Kanu’s mission to disrupt peace in the South-East and parts of the South-South to the fore.

The INM, therefore, called on all Nigerians and the international community to condemn the killings as the “height of rascality exhibited by IPOB terrorists and its affiliates”.

While commending officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for responding promptly to the distress call from the Nigerian Police, the group warned Kanu to desist from further unholy ventures.

The INM, however, called on Nigerians to join forces with the security agencies to address the threats posed by this militant group.

The Igbos in Nigeria Movement views with concern the recent activities of Eastern Security Network in South East and part of South-South Nigeria that has resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of properties.

We are aware, just like the generality of Nigerians that the Eastern Security Network by all indication is a creation of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) with the sole purpose of instigating violence, creating chaos and carrying out nefarious activities that would lead to loss of lives and destruction of properties.

The Igbos in Nigeria Movement, as a result, condemns the killing of innocent citizens by suspected members of the Eastern Security Network in Orlu, Imo State in a most gruesome manner ostensibly on the instruction of the fugitive Nnamdi Kanu.

The unfortunate incident in Orlu, Imo State once again brings to the fore how Nnamdi Kanu and his co-travelers plan to disrupt peace in South East and parts of South-South Nigeria by establishing the Eastern Security Network to act as the militant wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

We wish to state that this act of lawlessness is unacceptable in the interest of peace and tranquility in South East and South Nigeria. Hence, the need for security agencies to carry out a detailed investigation to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of innocent Nigerians.

We are also using this medium to rebuke the perceived mastermind of the nefarious activities of the Eastern Security Network, Nnamdi Kanu for his atrocities against the people of Nigeria through the sponsorship of criminal gangs in fulfillment of his innate desire to see to the disintegration of Nigeria.

As a matter of urgency, Nnamdi Kanu must come to terms with the reality that his actions and inactions over the years are acts of terrorism. He must therefore desist from such unholy ventures forthwith.

It’s therefore unfortunate that after committing such a heinous crime against humanity, Mr Nnamdi Kanu, a fugitive, will go online to incite members of the IPOB in Nigeria to take up arms against men of the Nigerian Army under any guise.

The Igbos in Nigeria Movement is aware that members of the Eastern Security Network indeed mobilized themselves and armed with assault rifles and attacked police officers and burnt down scores of police stations. This consequently necessitated the distress call to the Nigerian Army for reinforcement in the face of the arson being committed by members of the Eastern Security Network.

The Igbos in Nigeria Movement wishes to state in unequivocal terms that incident in Orlu, Imo State that leftover four persons dead and scores injured is the height of rascality exhibited by IPOB terrorists and its affiliates. All Nigerians and the international community must condemn this.

We wish to use this medium to commend officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for indeed saving the day by responding promptly to the distress call from the Nigerian Police. This, in our opinion, indicates the critical role of the Nigerian Army in internal security operations in the country. We also call on the government and other concerned stakeholders to initiate measures that would address the threats posed by Nnamdi Kalu and his cohorts before things spiral out of control.

The Igbos in Nigeria Movement is calling on all well-meaning Nigerians to join forces with the security agencies to address the threats posed by this militant group that has been terrorizing the good and peaceful people South-East Nigeria.

Governor Babagana Zulum has expressed gratitude to the outgoing service chiefs for the peace and rehabilitation efforts in Borno State.

The governor made the comment on Tuesday night in Maiduguri, when some journalists sought his reaction to the appointment of new military chiefs.

He said: “The outgoing service chiefs have been with us in the last six years, and during these eventful and challenging years, they immensely contributed to ongoing peacebuilding efforts through the fight against Boko Haram, and they helped grateful in other developmental efforts.

“Our rebuilding and resettlement efforts are only possible because of the combined efforts of Lieutenant General Buratai as chief of army staff, Air Marshall Sadique as chief of air staff, of course with so much contribution from other service chiefs, intelligence bodies, police, paramilitary and volunteers.

“We can’t ignore these huge contributions, but then, as we all know, everything has an appointed time, we thank all the outgoing service chiefs for their contributions and we wish them the best in future endeavours”.

The governor, however, hoped that the incoming officers will maintain the momentum in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other criminal vices.

“As for the incoming, especially, Gen. LEO Irabor who is chief of defence staff and General Attahiru, the COAS, both of them have worked here in Borno as theatre commanders of operation Lafiya Dole, they know all the issues and I am sure they will hit the ground running. The Borno State Government will accord them the same maximum support we gave their predecessors, and we will continue in our own roles in supporting the military with logistics as we have been regularly doing, we will sustain our mobilization of communities for intelligence gathering, funding operations of thousands of volunteers, praying for our troops and volunteers in front lines and supporting their families as we have been doing.

The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has tested positive for COVID-19.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase on Wednesday says that the governor’s result turned positive after a close aide also returned positive in the last few weeks.

He noted that the governor did not show any symptoms of the disease but has already commenced treatment as prescribed by medical personnel.

Mr. Akase called on those who came in contact with the governor for a COVID-19 test and ascertain their status.

The close aides to the governor who have so far tested positive include his orderly, his ADC, one of the DSS operatives attached to the governor, his principal private secretary, his Senior Special Assistant on Protocol, and the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Finance.

Governor Ortom urged Benue people to continue to observe the protocol for the prevention of the virus such as wearing face masks, use of sanitizers, regular hand washing and physical distancing.

He also encouraged residents of the state not to be afraid of going for the COVID-19 test as only doing so would help in containing the spread of the disease.

On July 4, 2020, the wife of Benue State Governor, Eunice Ortom tested positive for COVID-19.

“A few moments ago this evening, I received my result from the tests earlier carried out on me by NCDC personnel on routine screening at Government House, Makurdi which returned that I, my son, and some staff are COVID-19 positive.

“We have from this moment, gone into total isolation as required by the protocol and would immediately begin the management treatment as advised by medical experts,” she said.

Niger Expands Counterterror Capabilities With C-130

Niger’s Air Force celebrated the return of a refurbished C-130H Hercules transport plane that will be used to carry materiel and troops to defend its borders.

U.S. Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett and U.S. Ambassador to Niger Eric Whitaker presented the plane to Nigerien Defense Minister Issoufou Katambe and Chief of Defense Gen. Salifou Modi at Air Base 101 in Niamey earlier in January.

The ceremony marked the return of the plane to the Nigerien fleet after being repaired and refurbished. Capt. Ouma Laouali, Niger’s first female C-130 pilot, also took part in the event.

The aircraft expands Niger’s vital logistics capability, particularly in border regions where extremists are active. Niger shares borders with seven nations and is part of the G5 Sahel Joint Force that includes Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali and Mauritania. Niger also participates in peacekeeping missions in Mali and the Central African Republic.

Katambe recently recommended to Niger’s Parliament that the nation double the size of its military from 25,000 to 50,000 over the next five years as part of its ongoing battle with extremists such as al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb and Boko Haram.

“The return of the aircraft to Niger, after a general overhaul carried out according to the strictest aeronautical norms and standards under the expertise of the U.S. Air Force, is the culmination of several years of efforts and the expression of the commitment of the state of Niger to equip our Army with the highest quality equipment,” Katambe said during the ceremony.

Niger will receive a second C-130 in the final months of this year, Katambe added. The C-130H plays a key role in airdropping troops and equipment in hostile areas. It can operate from underdeveloped landing strips and be quickly reconfigured to deliver various types of cargo, vehicles and personnel.

“As Niger endeavors to bring peace, security and stability to the region, I am certain the Nigerien Armed Forces, with the C-130 now rejoining the aviation fleet, will continue to establish itself as a model both for operational effectiveness on the battlefield and for the professionalism with which your Airmen and Soldiers display in and out of uniform,” Whitaker said during the ceremony.

Along with providing the C-130H, the U.S. has trained 16 Nigerien pilots and 31 support staff to operate the aircraft. It also has provided $17 million in upgrades, including a new C-130 hangar at Air Base 201 in Agadez in central Niger and a refurbished hangar in Niamey. A spare-parts hangar also is planned for Niamey.

“Standing side by side, U.S. and Nigerien forces have come together to advance mutual security and trust,” Barrett said. “Today’s C-130 handover ceremony is a cornerstone in increasing our strong partnership and interoperability in the actions of our two air forces.”

Katambe echoed that sentiment.

“The arrival of this aircraft celebrates once again the excellence of military cooperation between the United States of America and Niger,” he said.

Service Chiefs: Coalition wants President Buhari to honour outgoing officers with GCON national awards

0

The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Good Governance and Transparency has called on the Federal Government to confer the national award of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on the outgoing service chiefs.

According to the coalition, the now-retired military heads served Nigeria well, displaying unalloyed patriotism and commitment, hence they should be honoured to encourage others to strive for excellence.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had, on Tuesday, appointed new service chiefs following the immediate resignation and retirement of their predecessors.

Those involved are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

President Buhari thanked the outgoing military chiefs for their “overwhelming achievements in our efforts at bringing enduring peace to our dear country,” wishing them well in their future endeavours.

And in a statement co-signed by Dr Emmanuel Ogar and Abubakar Gana, the coalition said the service chiefs merit the second-highest national honours in the land having defended our territorial integrity, fought against external aggression and maintained law and order.

The group noted that they carried out these functions so well that a vast portion of the country which had been tormented by terrorists was recaptured and the people liberated.

The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Good Governance and Transparency, therefore, vowed to commence the process of submitting nominations on their behalf for the awards.

The statement added that they are eminently qualified due to the services they rendered to the country.

Read the full statement below:

You all aware that President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday, accepted the immediate resignation of Service Chiefs and their retirement from service.

Those affected were the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

Before appointing new sets of officers to take their place, President Buhari in a rare show of emotion thanked the former chiefs for what he called their “overwhelming achievements in our efforts at bringing enduring peace to our dear country and wished them well in their future endeavours.

From this, we can deduce that the President appreciated their service and commitment to the fatherland and will miss their dedication to duty and sense of patriotism.

It is at this point that we want to suggest to the Federal Government to honour these well-deserving Nigerians to encourage others to strive for excellence.

Every year the Federal Government awards national honours to deserving Nigerians who have served the nation well.

We make bold to say that the immediate past set of service chiefs who retired on Wednesday, have from all indices, served Nigeria well.

From the Chief of Defence Staff to the Chief of Army Staff, to the Chief of Air Staff and Chief of Navy. They were exceptionally good.

For the little over five years that they were in office, they were able to defend the territorial integrity of the nation, fight against external aggression and maintain law and order within the country.

They carried out these functions so well that a vast portion of the country which had been tormented by terrorists was recaptured and the people liberated.

These tested military chiefs were able to achieve all these because they were coordinated, blended so well and worked as a team.

They are shiny examples of what can be achieved if people unite and work together for a common goal.

We believe it would be in the interest of Nigeria and her citizens,  that these set of chiefs who have done well for the country be rewarded as they deserve to be given special recognition due to their service to fatherland.

It is in line with this belief that we shall commence the process of submitting nominations on their behalf for the Nigerian National Honours award.

The honours award as we are all aware, was instituted by the National Honors Act No. 5 of 1964, during the First Republic, to honour Nigerians who have rendered service for the benefit of the nation.

The types include the order of the Federal Republic and Order of the Niger with each category having a Grand Commander, Commander, Officer and Member.

Since the Grand Commander is usually given to Presidents and Heads of State, we will be submitting nominations for the immediate past service chiefs to be honoured with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, GCON, award.

We have gone through the processes for the award and we have found that they are eminently qualified due to the services they rendered the country more so as the award is said to be to encourage people to do more, to promote excellence and patriotism, to promote selfless and meritorious service.

Nigeria has had numerous sets service chiefs but none have blended like these that just retired that we feel it will not be right to let them go like that but we must do something in recognition of their efforts.

With the benefit of hindsight, one can say that these set of service chiefs were intellectually fitted and mentally equipped for the job.

They chased away terrorists, insurgents and bandits from the country and made life worth a living in Nigeria.

Their tenure stopped the corruption in the system and brought accountability to the handling and purchase of military equipment unlike in the past.

These set of chefs can hold their heads high in any part of the globe due to their high professionalism and dedication to duty.

They were bold, courageous and focussed and did not lose sight of their target despite the many attempts to distract them.

They displayed rare patriotism in the fight against terrorism and insurgency to the extent of putting their lives on the line going against banditry,  terrorism, kidnapping, armed robbery and other security threats.

They are leaving with a clean record of excellence in the discharge of their responsibilities as the security situation in Nigeria improved over the years due to their efforts.

They have succeeded in setting a standard that anyone succeeding them would find difficult to fill.

They were visionaries of the best order and we have no qualms recommending for recognition and higher responsibilities in future.
