Footballers Not A Priority For Vaccine – Fifa President

0

Footballers should not be considered among the priority groups for receiving the Covid-19 vaccine, Fifa president Gianni Infantino said on Monday.

Some countries have begun vaccinating athletes or plan to inoculate them ahead of the Olympic Games, due to be held in Tokyo from July 23, drawing criticism.

But Infantino, who was launching a joint campaign with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to promote fair access to vaccines, said he was not a supporter of footballers jumping the queue. “The priority for the vaccines is, of course, the people at risk and for health workers. This is very clear in our mind. I don’t consider, we don’t consider, football players as a priority group in this respect,” he told a news conference.

“Of course for safety reasons, in the context of the months to come, in the context of international competitions and travel, vaccination might be recommended at some point and the Olympic Games are, of course, only in the summer.

“But all this will happen, of course, respecting the established order of distribution. There are people who are at risk and these people should have priority of course and it is not football players or officials,” he added.

Infantino said he was, however, confident that stadiums would be full at next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

“I am very, very confident (it) will be incredible, will have the same magic, uniting the world. We will be back to where we have to be,” he said.

The tournament is due to be held in Qatar in November and December 2022 and will feature 32 nations.

“Covid will be defeated by then. If in two years’ time we are not there yet, we will all have a bigger problem than a World Cup,” he said.

Qualifying games for the tournament have already begun in Asia and South America and are due to start in Europe in March.

Asked about the wisdom of holding international games in the current situation, Infantino said those games would take place under a “clear health protocol which would not put at risk the health of anyone”.

“It is always a balance that we have to take but we need to respect the decisions of governments all over the world… the situation is very, very different all over the world.

“We will monitor the situation in the coming weeks, we can see the situation is evolving week by week.

“The international games will be held in March; by then we will assess the situation and see where we can play and in what conditions but we will certainly not take any risks with the health of anyone when we play football,” he said.

Ohanaeze tells new Chief of Army Staff to withdraw all army checkpoints in the South East

An Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Youth Council, (OYC), has called on the new Chief of Army Staff Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru to act quickly to withdraw all army checkpoints in the South East to avoid possible community clash between the army and Igbo youths.

Ohanaeze also asked the Army to warn operatives posted to the region to desist from employing youths to extort motorists on their behalf and put an end to the extortion commuters or be ready to deal with resistance from irate youths.

The youth organization, in a statement by its President, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, issued to newsmen on Sunday, noted that such acts, apart from the risk and danger it poses to life, is also a deliberate scheme to frustrate Igbo travellers heading to their different destinations.

Ohanaeze youths posited that all the federal and State highways in Igbo land which include Owerri Onitsha express, Owerri-Port Harcourt express, Enugu-Benue express, Asaba-Benin express, Owerri-Aba express, Aba-Port Harcourt express, Umuahia-Akwa Ibom-Calabar, Enugu-Awka express etc are occupied by alleged indisciplined and criminal minded soldiers and police, who severally have shot drivers and passengers at a slight provocation because of fifty and hundred Naira.

The group, however, advised Igbo youths to resist the urge of becoming tools for the army who recruit them at various checkpoints to embark on such illegal and criminal ventures, adding that it exposes them to danger and corruption.

According to him, five Igbo youths died sometime last year at the military checkpoint while in the process of collecting money from motorists for the army personnel.

Uncertainty over new IGP as Mohammed Adamu’s tenure expires

0

Who leads the police as Inspector General from Tuesday?

There is uncertainty at the Louis Edet House police headquarters in Abuja as a result of the silence from President Muhammadu Buhari and the seat of power – Aso Villa.

The tenure of IG Mohammed Adamu expires today; he has completed his 35 years maximum to stay in the police, having enlisted on February 2, 1986.

Adamu, who will turn 60 on September 17, was appointed as the IGP in January 2019. He has spent two years in office.

Three Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) and 10 Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) are also due for retirement with him today.

It is believed that there is a campaign to extend Adamu’s tenure

But some have argued against such extension, because it would contradict the provisions of the Police Act 2020 that pegs the retirement of police officers at 60 years of age or 35 years of service.

Section 18(8) of the new Act states: “Every police officer shall, on recruitment or appointment, serve in the Nigeria Police Force for 35 years or until the age of 60 years, whichever is earlier.”

The Act provides for a tenure of four years for the Inspector General of Police.

Section 7, subsection 2 of the Act provides that: “The person to be appointed as Inspector General of Police shall be a senior police officer not below the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police with the requisite academic qualification of not less than a first degree or its equivalent, in addition to professional or management experience.”

However, so far, the President’s intentions remain unclear as he has kept his decision close to his chest.

Reports of Chibok girls’ release not true – CDS

0

The Chief of Defence Staff Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor, has debunked the news that some Chibok girls were released during clearance operation in the Northeast.

General Irabor denied the claim while interacting with newsmen during his Operational visit to the Theatre Command of Operation Lafiya Dole in Maiduguri on Sunday.

He said that the Chibok girls were not in the Military’s custody. “We do not have any of the Chibok girls in our custody, so if they are not with us we have nothing to confirm again.

General Irabor noted that “It was the desire of the military the get the Chibok girls back safely and if our operations have helped those said to have escaped, I think we are glad.” Irabor added.

The CDS, who was accompanied by the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao, and the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo, said he was in the Theatre to appraised the security situation on the ground and to also get a briefing from the officers on duty.

Second impeachment: Donald Trump’s wife, Melania told to divorce him quickly

0

A brand and reputation management expert has suggested Melania Trump should “move fast and divorce” her husband Donald, as his second impeachment trial looms.

Speculation has been rife for years that Melania would eventually divorce her husband, particularly once his time as US President had come to and end.

Expert Eric Schiffer says now would be the time to do so, as any further charges against Trump trigger a “clear and present danger to their union”.

Speaking to The Mirror he said her advisers are likely urging her to “move fast” for a divorce, which could reportedly cost Trump an estimated $150 million.

“An indictment for Melania will be neither cool nor fashionable to her acquired tastes,” he told the publication,” he said, adding it could be “the final act” in her ‘role’ as his wife.

Melania’s advisers’ calculus will be to move fast because Donald’s divorce will cost Trump over 150 million that, in the end, if she doesn’t move quickly, he won’t have the cold cash to pay out.

Friend thinks Melania ‘unlikely’ to divorce
However, one friend of the family revealed recently he would be ‘truly shocked’ if Melania divorced her husband.

Society publicist R Couri, described as a “friendly acquaintance” of the Trump family, said: “The likelihood is 99.99 per cent they will stay together. I’d truly be shocked if Melania formally separated and divorced from her husband.

“She grew up in a pseudo-communist difficult life.

“When she married, she wanted stability, romantic stability, financial stability, and through it all the one thing still standing is that marriage.

”Trump faces a historic second impeachment trial over the ransacking of the US Capitol. The trial – in which Trump is charged with “incitement of insurrection” – will begin on February 9.

However, several of the former US president’s impeachment lawyers reportedly left his team with a little over a week before his trial.

CNN cited unnamed sources as saying that five lawyers, including two who were thought to be leading the team, had parted ways with the Republican billionaire after disagreeing over his legal strategy.

Mr Trump is the first president in history to be impeached twice. He was impeached by the House in 2019 over his dealings with Ukraine, but acquitted by the Senate.

And it seems increasingly likely he will be acquitted again.

Just this week 45 out of 50 Senate Republicans voted to consider stopping the trial before it even started on the grounds that presidents cannot face impeachment trials once they have left office.

For the impeachment to stand, it would take 17 Republican senators breaking ranks and voting alongside the 50 Democrats to convict the president.

That would leave the door open for Trump to run again in 2024, a prospect that a significant portion of Republicans now support.
