Buhari arrives Daura on a 4-day official visit

President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived Daura, his hometown, on a four-day official visit.

He is expected to return to the nation’s capital on Tuesday.

Upon arrival, he was welcomed at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport, Katsina by the Governor, Hon. Aminu Bello Masari, the Deputy Governor, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly and the Chief Judge.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk, led District Heads and traditional title holders to receive the President at the Helipad.

The statement said: “In the course of his stay in Daura, he is expected to, among other engagements, participate in the All Progressives Party, APC membership registration and revalidation exercise.

”The President considers this exercise as a very important one for the nation’s democracy and its yearning for good leadership as a requirement of the process of nation building.”

In a broadcast last week, President Buhari had urged “all good people,” not only to speak but to rise up and “get involved in the task of improving their society,” adding that “for most citizens, their greatest weapon is their vote. Register now for your Party and register when the time comes for elections.”

Former Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Jonah Wuyep (Rtd), has expressed confident that the new Service Chiefs appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari would succeed and work to tackle insecurity in the country.

Wuyep who spoke with newsmen in Jos said he has so much confidence in the new Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air-Vice Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amao.

In his words, ”Amao is a brilliant and outstanding officer who would do well as Chief of Air Staff.”

Wuyep noted that the sacrifices of the new Chief of Air staff towards peace and progress of the nation, especially his acknowledged gallantry at assignments, were outstanding.

”Amao has the requisite experience for his new job with his core competence in strong leadership and professional skills, Air Vice Marshall Amao had brought his wealth of experience to bare on all his assignments in the Nigerian Air Force”.

Wuyep further stated that collaboration between security agencies would give the new Service Chiefs victory over Boko Haram and other security challenges in the country.

“I would expect the government to give them all the support to do their best. I expect to see more synergy, let them work as a team and carry out more intelligence gathering’

”The new Service Chiefs should work as a team. They need the right equipment and government should make sure they get what it takes to fight.

”I am confident that the new Service Chiefs especially that of the Air Force AVM Amao would bring in some fresh air to the security situation in the country.” He added.

Festus Stephen stabs Gudus to death Over iPhone In Adamawa

A27-year old civil servant, Festus Stephen, has been charged to court for allegedly killing his friend, Abbas Mohammed Gudus, in Adamawa State.

Stephen, a staff member of Adamawa State Ministry of Health, attached to Health Services Management Board in Mubi, is currently standing trial before Justice Helen Hammajoda of High Court 2, Yola, for stabbing Gudus to death after a dispute over an iPhone.

He was charged to court on two counts, bordering on robbery, contrary to and punishable under section 1(2) (b) of the robbery and firearms (Special Provision) Act cap R11 laws of the Federation, 2004.

In his confessional statement, Stephen said he first met Gudus in 2011, and since then, they became friends.

He said on October 27, 2018, at about 7:30 pm in Mubi, he and the deceased decided that he (the deceased) should go and buy food, while he (Stephen) should go and purchase codeine syrup for consumption.

The 27-year-old further explained that he bought the victim’s iPhone at the cost of N40,000, and paid the money, but the deceased refused to give it to him.

According to him, some minutes after taking their codeine syrup, his friend removed the phone from his pocket to make a call, and then removed a knife and stabbed him on his neck as a result of which he fell lifeless.

He said he picked the phone, dipped his hands in the pocket of the deceased, took a cigarette packet, boarded a tricycle, and fled from the scene of the incident.

The case, which came up on Friday for a hearing, was adjourned to the 24th of February, 2021.

I Left Nigerian Army Better Than I Met It — Buratai
The immediate past Chief of Army Staff, retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, says he left the Nigerian Army better than he met.
Buratai stated this in his valedictory speech during the Pulling Out Parade by the Nigerian Army on Friday in Abuja.
He said that the army under his watch had achieved tremendous feat in the fight against insurgency and other security threats in the country. He added that he ensured adequate training of personnel and enhancement of war fare capabilities of the army as well as prioritisation of personnel welfare.
“Today is a day of appreciation and not a stocktaking, but let me put on record that I left Nigerian Army better than I met it.
“The Nigerian Army under my leadership was able to achieve great feat in the fight against insurgency in the country.
“We have been experiencing pockets of threats here and there, but I can confidently say that no part of Nigeria is ceded to any terrorist group or criminals.
“The counter insurgency operation is a warfare new to Nigerian Army but over time, we have continued to device means of tackling the ever evolving dynamic nature of the threats in the country.
“The Nigerian Army has remained resolute in the discharge of its roles as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“I urge you all to continue to rise to the occasion,” he said.
Buratai said that while it was always necessary to say goodbye at a point in life, he said it was not easy to find the right word to say goodbye to the courageous and dedicated team that worked with him.
Infrastructural development
He said that Nigerian Army also made giant strides in infrastructure development across the country.
Buratai commended the officers and soldiers of Nigerian Army for their dedication and loyalty, which he said assisted him to achieve so much in office.
The former COAS also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for the opportunity to serve the country as well as providing an enabling environment for him to succeed.
He also commended the effort of the government of Borno in the war against insurgency, assuring that the war would soon be a thing of the past.
He urged politicians to always leave military out of politics, adding that the country needed politicians who are statesmen to support the military in addressing the prevailing security challenges.
According to him, there is no gain saying that there cannot be development without security and lack of development breeds insecurity.
He solicited support for the new Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, to be able to deliver on his mandate.

Buratai pulls out of military service in a colourful ceremony

The immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has officially pulled out of the Nigerian Army in a parade at Mogadishu Cantonment, Asokoro, Abuja, on Friday.

As part of the military tradition in honouring a retiring Chief of Army Staff, the event involved a march past by the officers of Nigerian Army.

The event was attended by the Minister of Defence, retired Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi, members of the National Assembly, Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno, the new Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen.  Ibrahim Attahiru, representatives of other services chiefs and Buratai’s Regular Course mates.

The event also featured the unveiling and launching of the book entitled “The Legend of Buratai,’’ written by him.

While unveiling the book, Magashi said that the event was not just a pulling out but a celebration of the numerous achievements of Buratai as Army Chief.

Magashi said the book — “The Legend of Buratai Volume 2’’ — was a chronicle of the life of Buratai while growing up.

Buratai, urged the readers to take their time to digest it, noting that all the narratives in the book were real.

The Borno Geographic Information Service (BOGIS) has cautioned organisations erecting illegally erecting masts and other communication towers within the State capital indiscriminately.

The Agency has therefore directed all concerned individuals and organizations to present Title documents of ownership of all properties, Clearance to Operate Note (CNO) from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation indicating the eligibility of their documents or otherwise of operating such facilities within their various premises.

BOGIS in a statement, further warned that any person or organization that has erected such masts or towers but fails to comply with this public notice is doing so at his own peril and would be accordingly treated as a violator of Land Use Regulations.

Kidnappers of 26 youths from Taraba demands N52 million ransom for their release

Kidnappers of 26 youths from the Takum local government area of Taraba demands N52 million ransom for their release.

A relation of one of the victims, who pleaded anonymity, told The Nation the kidnappers have established contacts with the affected families and are demanding N2m ransom per head.

He said there was reliable information the kidnappers have moved the victims into a forest situated between Takum local government in Taraba and Katsina-Ala in Benue State.

The sources further disclosed in revenge for the abduction of the 26 victims, youths in Takum on Thursday evening attacked Tivs resident in Takum and abducted 31 persons, including women and children.

He said the abducted Tivs are hostage in an unknown hideout in Takum.
The Takum youths, according to him, have fingered Tivs for the abduction of their kinsmen.

He said they also vowed to kill the 31 Tivs in their custody should anything happen to their kinsmen.

Taraba Police spokesman DSP David Misal confirmed the kidnappers have established communication with relations of the victims.

He appealed to Takum youths to exercise patience, promising the police was making concerted efforts to secure the release of the kidnapped victims.

The Nation had reported 26 Takum youths returning from a wedding ceremony in Wukari were abducted between Chechenji and Kofai Ahmadu villages on Wednesday.

HOSCON advises the FG to ignore the calls to scrap NDDC

The Host Communities Producing Oil and Gas in Nigeria (HOSCON) has advised the Federal Government (FG) to ignore the calls by some groups and persons to scrap the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

It made the call just as the Niger Delta Development Initiative (NDDI) implored President Muhammadu Buhari to inaugurate the commission’s board.

In a statement Thursday, HOSCON’s National Leader, Prof. Jasper Jumbo, said the call for an end to the NDDC  was “irresponsible, an insult and gross disregard and disrespect of the untiring efforts” of prominent Niger Deltans to ensure a better deal for the oil-bearing communities in the country.

He acknowledged the fact that the NDDC had not fully lived up to its expectations, ‘primarily due to the fact that the successive managers and directors of the commission” did not understand the vision of those that birthed the intervention agency.

Jumbo, therefore, suggested the appointment of “patriotic Nigerians who are genuinely committed to the Niger Delta struggle” into the board and management of the commission.

Also on Thursday, the NDDI drew the attention of President Buhari to the illegalities currently going on in the NDDC and advised him to urgently act by inaugurating its board.

In a petition by its President, Chief Ebikalome Anselm and Secretary Johnson Oghenekevbe, the group reminded Buhari that the 13-member board had been confirmed by the Senate and therefore wondered why they had yet to be inaugurated.

The NDDI urged Buhari to sack Senator Godswill Akpabio, the minister of Niger Delta Affairs, for allegedly taking over the functions of the NDDC.

Ambassador Adekunle Badmus gives scholarships to 41 pupils

CHIEF Executive Officer of Goodmus Learning Centre, a leading study centre for students planning to study abroad, Ambassador Adekunle Badmus, has presented scholarships to 41 pupils of God Provides Secondary School in Enugu.

The educationist said he was inspired by the need to help the less privileged members of the society.

Badmus, who is also the convener of Quality But Affordable Education in Africa, said the centre was interested in helping Nigerian students secure admission in tertiary institutions in Turkey, where the government has subsidised education.
He said: “Today, we are giving local students tuition scholarship, courtesy of Goodmus Learning Centre and partners. What we are doing is a concept that came into my spirit, years back, to look at ways to give back to those that could not pay the tuition fees for their wards. That was how we came about this programme.

“We tried all we could to reach out to big companies to help us fund this, but they did not take us seriously. Some of them said we should wait. But now, we are awarding these students, and I can see the happiness in them.

“About 41 students benefitted and we spent about N1 million. What we did was to give back to the less privileged, to help those who want to study abroad but feel that the United States of America (U.S.A) or Canada is expensive to get quality and affordable education in Turkey.“
