Former Philippines President, Benigno Aquino, dies at 61

Benigno Aquino, the former president of the Philippines, has passed away.

He passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 61.

The death of former President Cory Aquino was confirmed by President Rodrigo Duterte’s spokesperson, Harry Roque, hours after local media reported that the former leader had been transported to a hospital.

“We express our sympathies and condolences to the family and loved ones of former President Benigno Simeon ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III, as well as our condolences on his untimely passing,” Roque said in a statement.

The previous president’s achievements and services to the country are acknowledged, and we ask that our people pray for the everlasting resting place of the former president.

The cause of Aquino’s death has not been revealed at this time.

Born on February 8, 1960, in the Philippines, to one of the country’s wealthiest land-owning political families, Aquino served as President of the Republic from 2010 to 2016.

Concerns have been raised regarding Nigeria’s rising indebtedness; however, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, and the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, have disagreed on the country’s debt to gross domestic product ratio.

Okojo-Iweala stated that the debt-to-GDP ratio had increased to 35 percent, but Ahmed stated that it was 29 percent.

During the African Development Bank’s high-level knowledge event on the topic “From Debt Resolution to Growth: The Way Forward for Africa,” which was held electronically, both the minister and the director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO) spoke.

The Nigerian minister also stated that the country intends to borrow additional funds to expand its infrastructure capabilities.

The Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced on Wednesday that three online fraudsters had been found guilty and sentenced.

Afolabi Gbolahan, Gbolahan Sodiq Atanda, and Saheed Ayomide Rabiu are the three men who were convicted.

Rabiu and Atanda were found guilty by Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo of the Federal High Court in Abeokuta, while Justice Uche Agomo of the Federal High Court in Ibadan sentenced Afolabi to prison on an amended one-count charge brought against him by the Federal High Court in Ibadan.
The trio was found guilty of false impersonation, which is a violation of Section 22 (2)(b)(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, and etc.) Act, and sentenced to imprisonment.
Afolabi was sentenced to seven months in prison, while Rabiu and Atanda were each sentenced to one and three months in prison, according to the court.

LAS VEGAS, Nigeria – The Lagos State University (LASU) had an impressive performance in the Young University Ranks 2021, which were released on Wednesday by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

Nigeria was represented by only two universities in the Young World University Rankings for 2021. Ota, Ogun State’s Covenant University (CU), located in Canaanland, is rated second overall.

On the table, LASU was ranked 149th in the world and first in Nigeria with 23, 421 students. The student-to-faculty ratio was 33.9 percent, and the female-to-male student ratio was 44:56.

There were 8,601 students enrolled at Covenant University, with a 16 percent staff-to-student ratio and a 43:57 male-to-female student ratio.

Both institutions, on the other hand, received a perfect score in the category for foreign students on the table. With a ranking of 61, the University of Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa has named the best university in Africa.

It is based on the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings, which identify the world’s finest universities that are less than 50 years old. The rating for 2021 comprises 475 universities, an increase over the previous year’s ranking of 414 institutions.

Nigeria’s Lagos State University, which was established in 1983, is a public institution of higher learning that offers three major courses: Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe.

For the month of May, the Federal Government, states, and local governments (LGs) split N605.95 billion.

A total of N605.958 billion in income was divided with the federal, state, and local governments, as well as other relevant agencies, according to the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC), which announced its findings on Wednesday.

Mr. Charles Nwodo, Director, Information, Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, said in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday that the sum was disclosed during a virtual conference of the committee during which the figure was revealed.

Among the N605.958 billion split by the committee, according to a communiqué, were the costs of collection borne by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

The committee also claimed that the Federal Government received N242.120 billion, the states received N194.195 billion, and the Local Governments received N143.742 billion, according to the committee.

It went on to say that the oil-producing states got N26.901 billion as a result of the deduction (13 per cent of mineral revenue).

For the month of May 2021, the committee estimates that gross revenue from the Value Added Tax (VAT) stood at N181.078 billion, as against N176.710 billion disbursed in the previous month of April 2021.

There was an increase of N4.368 billion as a result of this.

In the statement, it stated that “the allocation is as follows: the Federal Government received N25.260 billion, the states received N84.202 billion, and the Local Government Councils received N58.941 billion.”

“Statistically, the Distributed Statutory Revenue of N428.198 billion received for the month was N69.197 billion lower than the N497.385 billion received for the previous month, a decrease of N69.197 billion. The Federal Government received N175.541 billion from the revenue, while states received N89.037 billion, local governments received N69.644 billion, and Derivation (13 percent Mineral Revenue) received N24.666 billion.”

Also disclosed by the committee were cuts in Corporations’ Income Tax (CIT), Oil and Gas Royalties, Import and Excise Duty, while only the value-added tax (VAT) increased, albeit by a little amount.

N357.888 billion in Gross Statutory Revenue, N168.403 billion in VAT, N7.940 billion in Solid Mineral Revenue, N1.727 billion in Exchange Gain and augmentations from non-oil sources totaled N20 trillion in revenue for the current month, according to the company.

According to the committee, this increased the total distributable revenue to N605.958 billion dollars.

The governorship aspirant under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra state, Senator Andy Uba, has threatened lawsuit against Heritage Bank over trending video of protesting of the bank at the entrance of his residence.

About three days ago, some staff of the bank, while on a loan recovery drive protested at the gate ofbtge senator, asking him to come to the bank and repay his loan.

The protest by the bank staff trended and went viral on the social media.

In a letter dated June 23, 2021 and signed by his lawyer, Mr. Ahmed Raji, SAN, Senator Uba said the actions of the bank staff have exposed him to ridicule, shame and embarrassment.

He asked the bank to tender unreserved apology in five national dailies and N5billion damages.

Part of the letter reads, ”Our client’s attention has been drawn to a video currently being shared on WhatsApp, showing not less than 25 [twenty-five] staff of the Abuja branch of Heritage Bank Plc., wearing customized Heritage Bank Plc., T-shirts; carrying placards and signages with defamatory inscriptions written on them, at the front gate of the residential premises of our client, in Asokoro Abuja. The said video which we have seen, had a voice over by one of your bank’s staff with the following narration:

””Good morning ladies and gentlemen, today is Monday the 21 st day of June 2001, and we have here the staff of Heritage Bank Plc., Abuja. We are in front of Senator Andy Uba’s house in Abuja. Senator Andy Uba has been owing the bank for a couple of years now and we are here for a peaceful meeting with him, very peaceful meeting to ask him to kindly repay those loans because those are depositors fund and those monies, if they are not repaid will throw the number of people you see here with their families out of work and we know the situation of the economy now.

”Despite your veiled denial, the deliberateness of your staffs’ action is founded and the intent, to wit: – bring our client to publicobrobrium shame ridicule scorn etc. is glaring for all to see.

”This is more so, as you deliberately picked the rather inauspicious period immediately preceding the forthcoming gubernatorial primary election of the All Progressives Congress [APC] for Anambra State slated for the 26th of June 2021, wherein our client is the leading candidate to clinch his Party’s ticket, to stage this smear campaign against him.

”Surely, the damage occasioned to our client by your calculated but ill-advised action is unquantifiable. However, our client will be assuaged if a public apology, unreserved, is tendered by you and published in at least 5 [five] national daily newspapers within a day of receipt of this letter and payment
[Five Billion Naira] in damages.

”If not, we have our client’s further instructions to seek redress against you in a court of law for the same. Kindly be advised.

”We do hope that you will take benefit of the olive branch offered in this letter; the gamble, otherwise, is yours to suffer”, he said

COAS Visits Imo State, Lauds Troops’ Resilience In Restoring Security.

The Chief of Army Staff ( COAS) Maj Gen Faruk Yahaya has lauded the resilience and doggedness of troops of 34 Brigade and operatives of other security agencies in turning the tide of the recent spate of insecurity that resulted from the criminal activities of the proscribed group, IPOB, in Imo State.

Gen Yahaya made the commendation today at Obinze Barracks, Owerri Imo state, while addressing the troops during his maiden operational visit to Headquarters 34 Brigade,  Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director Army Public Relations said.

He told the troops that his visit was informed by the need to have an on-the-spot assessment of the security situation in the state. The COAS expressed delight on the successes so far recorded by the troops and urged them to redouble their effort in order to consolidate on their successes.

Gen Yahaya further charged them to be loyal and exhibit high sense of duty at all times. He pointed out, that more successes would be recorded through compliance to instructions and loyalty to superior authority.

The COAS also called on the officers to always lead by example and ensure that troops are adequately briefed and kept abreast of the mission at hand.

In a show of synergy, the COAS also paid a visit to troops of 211 Response Group, Nigerian Air Force, Owerri, where he implored the troops to be professional and alert at all times. He expressed appreciated them for their spirit of jointness and synergy towards tackling insecurity in the state.

Highlight of the working tour was COAS’ visit to the proposed Military Hospital Owerri and a tour of Obinze Barracks.

Soludo clinches APGA ticket for Anambra gubernatorial poll

Former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Charles Soludo, has won the Anambra governorship primary election of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

He garnered 740 votes out of the 792 votes cast by delegates. 795 delegates were accredited overall.

His victory was emphatic.

He will represent the party in the governorship election scheduled to hold on November 6.

The primary election took place on Wednesday in Awka, Anambra state capital.

Willie Obiano, Anambra state governor, and other stakeholders of the party were present at the event.

The National Association of Nigeria Students, NANS, has called on the Benue state government to be at alert as a proposed gathering of some disgruntled students leaders in Benue state anticipate to cause mayhem in the state and also fan the ember of division and disunity among students in the country.

The NANS President sound this warning while addressing a press conference in Abuja. He said the intention of these student fugitives among other things is to cause mayhem in the state and further complicate the fragile security situation in the state.

Asefon said he will not allow criminals to gather anywhere in Benue State masquerading as students thereby tarnishing the good relationship that exists between the Benue State Governor and the students.

Asefon noted that students of goodwill should concentrate on how to join hands with the Benue state governor to improve security in the state rather than complicating it.

Speaking further, he called on security apparatuses in Benue State to treat these impostors as criminals that they are and reject their efforts to pitch legitimate students against the people’s government of Benue State.

While commending the Governor of Benue State on his proactiveness on the issue of security of his people, Asefon vow to storm Benue State to flush these criminals out and also use the privileges solidarize with the people and government of Benue State and offer his moral support in the fight against rampaging marauders in the State.

“Those who are unrepentant in their effort to cause security breach will be met with commemorate the resistance and we shall leave no stone unturned to ensure they meet superior power at all front”, he added.

Army Replies Gumi’s Allegations Of Nigerian Military Supporting Bandits

The Nigerian Army has reacted to the claims by Sheikh Ahmad Gumi that the Nigerian military was colluding with bandits responsible for various crimes and atrocities across the country.

The Islamic scholar made the allegations when he featured on ARISE TV Morning Show on Wednesday.

Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations in a statement condemned Gumi’s allegation.

Nwachukwu said the military arm has conducted its constitutional responsibilities in the most professional manner in line with global best practices of adherence to the rules of engagement and protection of fundamental human rights.
