0

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been re-arrested and brought back to Nigeria to face his trial, Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has said.

At a joint press briefing on Tuesday with the State Security Service (SSS) in Abuja, Mr Malami disclosed that international collaborative efforts with security agencies led to Mr Kanu’s arrest and repatriation to Nigeria.

Mr Kanu and his co-defendant are facing treasonable felony charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Mr Kanu fled the country in September 2017 after an invasion of his home by the military in Afara-Ukwu, near Umuahia, Abia State.

The Nigerian government obtained a court order on September 20, 2017, to designate IPOB a terrorist group and to proscribe it.

BREAKING: The FG has approved a deadline of July 26 for the NIN/SIM linkage

0

The decision to extend the deadline was made after stakeholders requested that the enrolment and NIN-SIM verification processes be consolidated, according to the government.

It went on to say that the development came as a result of the country’s rapid growth in the number of enrolment systems.

Nigerians are now connected to a total of 57.3 million people.
The announcement was made in a joint statement by the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) Director of Public Affairs, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, and the National Identity Management Commission’s (NIMC) Head of Corporate Communications, Mr Kayode Adegoke.

“The Federal Government has approved the extension as part of its effort to make it easier for its citizens and residents to obtain the NIN, and it is critical to take advantage of the extension,” according to the statement.

” There are now 57.3 million unique NIN enrolments, with 3 to 4 SIMs per NIN on average. Every citizen and legal resident should be able to get their NINs thanks to the large number of enrolment centers across the country.

EFCC files a motion in the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, seeking the final forfeiture of N2.42 billion and $5.78 million linked to former First Lady Patience Jonathan

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed a motion in the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, seeking the final forfeiture of N2.42 billion and $5.78 million linked to former First Lady Patience Jonathan.

After hearing arguments from counsel, Justice T. G. Ringim set the date for Monday.

The EFCC had filed an ex-parte application for the forfeiture of funds in Skye Bank Plc and Ecobank Plc before Justice Mojisola Olatoregun.

The money was temporarily forfeited by Justice Olatoregun in April 2017.

Jonathan and other respondents, LA Wari Furniture and Bathes, objected to the ruling and took it to the Court of Appeal and then the Supreme Court.

They lost, however, because the courts upheld Justice Olatoregun’s decision.

The judge retired from the bench in 2019, and the case was reassigned to Justice Chuka Obiozor by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.

Prior to his transfer to the Federal High Court in Benin, Edo, Justice Obiozor was unable to preside.

At the rescheduled hearing, EFCC counsel Rotimi Oyedepo told Justice Ringim about the case and prayed for final forfeiture.

Patience Jonathan was represented by Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN) and Gboyega Oyewole (SAN).

Mike Ozekhome (SAN), counsel for the companies, urged the court to adjourn, saying he was preparing to file an application challenging the suit’s constitutionality.

The nature of the proceedings, according to Justice Ringim, was unique and could not be shortened by any application.

“This court will recess for the hearing of the pending motion for final forfeiture.

He stated, “The second respondent is hereby ordered to file the application, if any, within 14 days from today, and the plaintiff will have one week to respond.”

…recover gun trucks, arms and ammunition

Troops of 152 Task Force Battalion in conjunction with the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI on Sunday, 27 June, 2021 dealt a devastating blow on marauding Boko Haram (BHT) and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) while attempting to infiltrate the Forward Operational Base at Bula Yobe in Borno State.

The terrorists, who came mounted on Gun trucks and several motorcycles attacked the location via an unsuspected crossing point, but were met with heavy volume of fire from the vigilant troops. The Land troops, in their usual dexterity swiftly and decisively engaged the terrorists, subsequently forcing them to retreat, having lost initiative.

The troops sustained the fire fight and successfully neutralised 12 terrorists, with several others fleeing with gun shot wounds. The troops gallantly captured one Gun Truck, one Self Propelled Gun-9, one Dushika Gun and one mounted QJC Machine Gun. Other items captured are one Light Machine Gun and five AK 47 Rifles.

Sadly, during the encounter two soldiers paid the supreme sacrifice, while five others sustained varying degrees of injury and have been evacuated by the Air component of OPHK to a medical facility, where they are currently receiving medical attention.

The general area within FOB Bula Yobe is cool and calm under the control of troops of the battalion. Further exploitation by the resilient troops is ongoing .

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Faruk Yahaya has lauded the Land troops and the Air Component for their synergy and quick response, which is in tandem with the ongoing rejigging of the counter terrorism counter insurgency operations in the North East. He charged the troops to maintain the tempo and vehemently hold their ground, to deny the terrorists freedom of action.

Scores of ISWAP-Boko Haram terrorists were eliminated when Nigerian troops engaged them in an aggressive battle at Bula Yobe axis of Banki in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

An intelligence officer said the terrorists attempted to attack a military formation in the axis when they were repelled by the Troops of 21 Armoured Brigade Bama of Operation Hadin Kai, after a heavy gunfight that lasted more than two hours.

The source said: “the ISWAP-Boko Haram terrorists, suspected to have come from the Sambisa Forest, on about six gun trucks and approached the area from different directions simultaneously to wreak havoc, but met their Waterloo by the gallant troops.

“The terrorists withdrew in disarray with a large number of them suffering fatal injuries leaving behind several weapons and ammunition including anti-aircraft gun barrel, AK 47 rifles. “Unfortunately, we lost two gallant military personnel while pursuing the fleeing remnants of terrorists after the encounter.”

Suspended French NGO ACTED denies staff were armed

0

French humanitarian organisation Acted, whose activities in northeastern Nigeria have been suspended by authorities, on Sunday said none of its staff carried weapons.

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum ordered the suspension of the group’s work on Saturday after residents near a hotel in the regional capital Maiduguri reported the sound of gunfire.

Authorities said that Acted trainers had been using toy guns to train people to shoot.

But in a statement on Sunday Acted said it ensured the safety of its team in a region in the grip of a 12-year jihadist insurgency through the use of “training and simulation exercises”.

The NGO described the exercises as “standard” practice for organisations working in both Nigeria and other countries and said staff did not carry weapons at any time, including during exercises.

It stressed that the training sessions were aimed at preparing staff for potential security incidents and carried out in “close collaboration” with the authorities and “full transparency”.

Since the start of the insurgency by radical Islamist group Boko Haram in 2009 in northeast Nigeria, nearly 40,000 people have died and two million been displaced.

IPOB and its campaign of distortion against Nigeria

0

By Kolawole Anthony

The latest confirmation of Lt. General Tukur Buratai (rtd) as a non-career ambassador to the Benin Republic has sent great shivers down the spines of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their splinter groups in the South-Eastern part of the country.

Against IPOB’s belief, Buratai has proven himself qualified with unique skills. His vast wealth of experience as a war veteran, peacekeeper, administrator with efficiency in maintaining order and stability in conflict-ridden areas around the country, along with his untainted outstanding records set him apart in the eye of The National Parliament Screening and confirmation, Security Agency’s check on personalities, and the Final Senate screening.

As part of the process before his confirmation, the members of the public were invited to submit petitions which would be either considered on the provision of worthy evidence or discarded when considered substantial. If culpable of the evidence, the particular nominee would eventually be disqualified.

All these formalities were satisfied, yet the IPOB and it’s over 22 nebulous CSOs kept quiet. They neither wrote any petition against Buratai, nor showed their grievances in writing before his appointment, but now want to tarnish the image of the former Army Chief as one who supervised genocide in Nigeria is unfortunate and smacks of mischief.

The efforts made by malcontent members of the proscribed sect to degrade Buratai’s image is a shameless act and goes against every principle of decency. It shows that the group is clueless and they are only out there to cause havoc and disorder under the disguise of having the interests of the Igbo people at heart.

In the third paragraph of their senseless letter, reference was made to the summary and links of what they termed “grave human rights violations and other conduct-atrocities” of T.Y Buratai when he served as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff all of which are unverified accounts of allegations tabled against the ambassador. It is witless of them to have used such baseless links and unverified summaries of what they claim are Buratai’s sins as support to their false claims.

The efforts and struggles of the Nigerian Army should not be demeaned and denigrated by disgruntled members of this group. Most of their efforts have been tailored towards scandalizing several members of the Buhari-led administration including the president himself all in the name of fighting for a just cause.

All movement of calumny by this group against the ambassador will not be accepted. Their futile cries for justice against Buratai is foolish as it is condemnable.

It has been proven that Buratai’s tenure as the Chief of Army Staff is one earmarked by several victories against insurgency and the protection of human rights. The group is quick to forget that this same man who they have so shamelessly slandered for the violation of several human rights instituted an office in the Nigerian Army dedicated to the protection of human rights by the soldiers.

Most of their claims in the letter were unsubstantial and controversial in all regards. All those who signed such an appalling letter must be brought to book to serve as a deterrent to individuals who would like to try such in the future. Everyone has his or her right to express opinions, but accusing an individual without substantial proof is a hatchet job.

The IPOB have yet again proven itself to be an organization full of dishonesty, unclear practices and violence. It is this very group that accused the ambassador of violating human rights that were also responsible for several attacks on innocent citizens and government properties earlier this year. It is thus ridiculous to see such an organization accuse someone of crimes they are clearly guilty of.

The Report of April 27 concerning the spate of attacks on security forces in the southeastern part of Nigeria by the so-called harmless peaceful protesters as claimed by IPOB, had it that, there was a gun exchange by IPOB with the police before they were subdued by the intervention of troops, which later resulted in the killing of five security officers including two soldiers.

_”Unidentified men attacked the police station in the southern part of Okigwe town,” Imo State police spokesman Orlando Ikokwu confirmed to AFP that, “Five policemen were killed while another is missing,” he said. Residents of Okigwe, however, claimed to have seen the bodies of six slain policemen._

From evidence and eyewitnesses, authorities attributed this spiteful attack to the members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist group campaigning for Biafran independence.

The ambassador was also blamed for the EndSars protest which saw the shooting of some of the protesters at Lekki toll gate sometime in October last year. Such an accusation is baseless. It is an effort by IPOB to corner the purpose of the protest into their selfish gain and therefore uses it as a weapon to attack the Nigerian military and haul them in a negative light.

The actions of the IPOB are a clear example of rewarding good and selfless service with chagrin and ignominy. Buratai’s excellent career record is enough evidence to prove to the world that this was a man who served his country to the best of his abilities. During his tenure, he was at the forefront of protecting human rights that he instituted a human rights desk to ensure that his men comply with set rules of engagement to protect the human rights of individuals.

This same man carried out a campaign to improve civil-military relations between the Nigerian Army and host communities which saw to the provision of basic and social amenities in such communities some of which include a massive water project in Abakpa and the provision of farming implements to farmers in such communities. This campaign also saw the provision of free medical outreaches in several communities around the country. All these helped to improve the overall living standards of people in such communities and helped alleviate poverty to a great extent in such communities.

It is therefore obvious that their vile agitation for freedom and their spurious attack on the personality of our dear Ambassador Buratai is borne out of the fear of blocking their core source of weaponry and ammunition supplies, which have been through borders that stood as a channel of support from their members in other countries.

Being befuddled and knowing how he had curbed their nefarious activities on many occasions in the past, the Indigenous People of Biafra had foreseen greater destruction lying ahead for them. Therefore, they resolved to use evil strategies, and different means to pull the Nigerian Ambassador to the Benin Republic, Buratai, out of that sensitive position.

What is best befitting for Ambassador TY Buratai is a Nobel peace prize, a great honour of service to his country and mankind, a peacemaker, and a great icon.

This is a man that deserves every accolade for a job well done in saving lives and properties. A selfless patriot that took an uncountable risk by endangering his life just to secure peace and unity in Nigeria.

He has earned great recognition and should be inducted into the country’s HALL OF FAME. All these, we believe he would get someday.

Constitution Amendment Will Tackle Separatist Agitations, says Senator Aliero

0

Chairman, Senate Committee on Works, Senator Adamu Aliero representing Kebbi Central Senatorial District has expressed confidence that the ongoing constitution amendment process will adequately address the root causes of separatist agitations in the country.

He believes that insecurity in the country is partially traceable to complaints of perceived marginalization and lopsidedness in resource allocation, appointments of political and public office holders and widespread mutual mistrust amongst some Nigerians.

Describing the nation’s insecurity as worrisome, the thrice-elected senator who was governor of Kebbi State between 1999 and 2007, told reporters in Abuja yesterday that the situation was compounded by the inability of stakeholders to address topical issues in public discourse such as marginalization, injustice, inequity, restructuring, devolution of powers, state police, etc.

He canvassed for increased public support for the constitution amendment process, saying that the insecurity and the general mood in the country had made a review of certain constitutional provisions urgent to restore confidence and forge national unity, harmony and integration. According to him, there is no better time than now to address the current disturbing happenings in the country.

‘’Let’s utilize the ongoing constitution amendment to address all the contending issues to curb separatist and secession calls and let peace reign. It serves us better than allow the country go on fire. War is evil and nobody wants war in this country.

‘’A situation where some people burn public buildings like courts, INEC offices, Police formations, correctional centers, etc, is bad because it sends fear that affects the overall security situation that can lead to total breakdown of law and order in the country. If the attacks on federal institutions, civil authority, the police, the military, DSS, the courts, prisons, INEC, etc continue, it questions the legitimacy of Federal government that has the responsibility that should maintain law and order.

‘’The earlier it is handled the better. Preferably let’s use dialogue and I don’t think the situation will get to the level that military force will be used to curb what is happening in the South East. Instead, let’s use the ongoing constitution amendment to address all the issues raised in the agitations by the South East, South West or even the North Central and virtually all over the country.

‘’These separatist agitations are causing very serious security challenges. In the South East are the IPOB and the Eastern Security Network producing Ebubeagu, in the South West are Amotekun and in the North, are some vigilante groups even though they are not equivalent to the Amotekun and the IPOB.

The senator, who was sub-committee chairman, presided over the recent public hearing on constitution amendment in Sokoto, venue of the exercise in the North West region, emphasized that there was no better time to address the raging issues than now.

‘’ We must use the opportunity of the ongoing constitution amendment to address alleged marginalization and lopsidedness in the appointment of public officers either in the civil service or political appointment. Truly speaking, most of the issues being raised at the constitutional review are issues that, if adequately handled, can really address the agitations whether from the South East, South West or even other parts of Nigeria because it has to do with the issue of true federalism. How do you address this issue of true federalism? This can be done through devolution of powers, revenue allocation, reviewing the formula from the current status where Federal Government is getting close to 60 per cent. Maybe, we should review it so that a small part of it can go to the states and local governments to boost development at the grassroots and the state levels.

Noting that devolution of powers was the current thinking in the North, the senator said that state governors who attended the public hearing endorsed the idea of devolution of powers. A lot of the presentations supported it there is so much power in the center and that’s why there is so much attraction to the center but if we devolve power to the states, there will be less attraction and there will be more resources to the states to deliver. I only hope that the resources will be judiciously utilized.

‘’For example, Federal Government has no business in providing education particularly primary education. Also, it has very little role in agriculture except conducting research for development as it’s done in India, Brazil and even in China. Agricultural development is left to the states but issues of regulation, research and development are done by the central government. In the US, it is the same thing.

‘’The issue of health care, apart from very few tertiary health care institutions, maybe some major teaching hospitals that the Federal Government should maintain, all the rest should be left to the states. Let some premier universities go back to the regions where they may even do it better than the Federal Government. If they give resources to the teaching hospitals, they should ensure that the resources are properly utilized.

On agitations for state police, Aliero disagreed, saying that the nation’s recent political history indicated that sufficient lessons had not been learnt. According to him, while Amotekun in the South West could complement the Nigerian police in curbing crimes and criminality, they should not carry arms and ammunitions since they lack legitimacy and powers.

‘’My worry is about state police considering our history in the First Republic when state police were used against political opponents is that it is a recipe for danger and anarchy. I will not subscribe to the idea of state police because of the inherent dangers. There is the likelihood that if you allow state police, they can be used as instruments of destabilization of the country.

‘’A group of states may form a security network and decide to declare their independence because they will be stronger than the Federal Government. If they do that, it could lead to the disintegration of the country. Again, our history of state police is nothing to write home about particularly during the First Republic. The Northern Peoples Congress, for example, used the state police to harass political opponents and muzzle political opposition.

‘’I’m afraid that the way our politics is, we have not learnt our lesson. If given chance, the state police can be used to suppress opposition, destabilize our democracy and take us back to dictatorship. Instead, I want more recruitment into the police force but instead of centralizing it at Abuja, let us decentralize it to the zonal level so that operational commands can be given to the commissioners of police who will be able to enforce security at the various state and local governments. I think this arrangement is better than state police’’, he said.

He advocated for immediate increase in manpower for the police and the military, arguing a situation where more than half of 300,000 personnel are presently guarding houses of political office holders such as ministers, governors, senators, etc including bank executives, etc portended grave dangers for the nation.

‘’It means we have about 180,000 police for 200 million Nigerians. This is grossly inadequate, and they are ill-equipped in terms of weaponry and logistics. Even where they have vehicles, maintenance and fuelling them is a big challenge. In the military that, by convention protects the country against external aggression, has about 160,000 personnel, if it’s up to that.

Egypt with 80 million people has over 3 million whereas Nigeria with 200 million people has just about 160,000 personnel. So where do you go from here? Even the small number is over-stretched with fighting bandits in the Middle-Belt, insurgency in the North East, kidnappings in the North West and dealing with militants that are vandalizing strategic national assets like pipelines in the Niger Delta’’, he said.
