FG work with South Africa to promote peaceful coexistence

0

The Federal Government has stated its willingness to continue working with South Africa to develop creative and effective programs that would engage both nations’ young in order to avoid the negative consequences of recent events.

Mr. Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, made the announcement yesterday in Abuja during a courtesy call from Mr. Thamsanga Mseleka, the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria.

He stated that both countries’ youth may be involved in sports, education, ICT skills, and culture to help the countries’ socioeconomic development.

Mr. Dare went on to say that the two countries’ exchanges, which began today, are intended to work out systems that will allow for constant conversation and the development of solutions that will be implemented by both governments.

“I am glad that, just as Nigeria is discussing how to defend its citizens’ rights, South Africa is doing the same.” This, he claims, will ensure that both countries’ goal for mutual cooperation is realized.

The Minister stressed that the discussion should extend beyond youth meetings to stakeholder consultations in order to deepen relationships between the two countries, noting that Nigeria and South Africa have a long-standing diplomatic relationship that should not be allowed to sour.

Mr. Nebeolisa Anako, the Permanent Secretary, had earlier stated that the engagement that would improve the bilateral connection between the two countries had been long overdue, especially given the fact that both countries share so many shared interests such as sports, youth, and culture.

Mr. Thamsanga Mseleka, the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, stated that he was in the Ministry to brief the Minister on his country’s readiness to open up areas that will solidify the two countries’ long-standing diplomatic relationship.

He stated that South Africa was willing to cooperate with Nigeria to develop mechanisms that would improve their connection, particularly through the involvement of both nations’ youth in sports, culture, and education.

You’re a bootlicker, Gumi says to Femi Adesina

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a controversial Islamic cleric, has criticized Femi Adesina, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, for calling him a “bandit lover.”

“My objective has not failed,” Gumi claims, “but it was undermined or discouraged by the same powerful people who profit from the chaos.” Gumi revealed his opinions on Thursday morning via his well-known Facebook page.

Read the rest of Gumi’s post here:

WAR HAS NEVER BEEN A SOLUTION IN ANY PART OF THE WORLD AT ANY TIME.

You bootlicker who referred to me as a “bandit-lover”! I am a country-lover, a region-lover, a state-lover, a people-lover, and a humanity-lover, to name a few.

I am a board-certified medical doctor who understands how to accurately extract a brain tumor without harming the delicate brain tissues in the process. I was a commissioned military officer who understands the purpose of the military and its capabilities. I am a scholar with a Ph.D. from another country. I am an Islamic scholar who understands the depravity of taking the lives of innocent people. So, in this sea of forgetfulness, silence is not an option for me.

Only a fool would allow his home to be used as a battleground. Unfortunately, there are a lot of fools out there. Killing rats with an iron rod in your rat-infested living room will most likely destroy your devices and furniture without killing any. We should not use weaponry to cover up bad governance.

Some deceitful people claim that peace talks with herdsmen bandits have failed, and that your goal has failed as well.

My objective, I added, had not failed, but it had been undermined or discouraged by the same powerful people who profit from turmoil or who want us to destroy ourselves and leave the herders in permanent ignorance.

We tried amnesty, some remarked, but it didn’t work. You tried amnesia rather than amnesty. Amnesty isn’t amnesty unless it includes rehabilitation, reconciliation, and compensation. If you want to know what an amnesty is, ask former Niger Delta Militants who have slain security personnel in the past. What’s stopping us from establishing a federal ministry of Nomadic Affairs to handle their issues and complaints?

All of the bandit leaders we met stated that after surrendering their guns, some remorseful ones were selected and extrajudicially executed. Peace and negotiations with them will not succeed until they trust the very unjust system that all Nigerians complain about and for which they used guns to fight. This brings us to our mediation duty. They know we won’t fool them as holy men, so they came out in force to see us. To our surprise, the same unfair system swings around and betrays our peace effort. Some in the press, whom I also refer to as criminals-in-purpose, and some politicians, whom I refer to as urban-bandits, cause the death and infirmity of more people than the bandits do as a result of their shared misuse of our meager resources and misplacement of priorities.

How many Nigerians have died recently from cholera, a water-borne disease, or typhoid, malaria, and malnutrition due to a lack of simply clean water to drink? Because of a lack of suitable maternal health facilities and competent workers, the country has a maternal death rate of almost 500000 per year. A country whose high-priced medical personnel are hunting for a way out of the blaze. Please, such a country!

By the way, you might not know that the bandits have created escape routes from aerial bombardment over time. They warned us that your attacks could only murder our women and children!

Just yesterday, two groups of banditry victims approached me, claiming that their loved ones had been kidnapped by bandits in the Kaduna suburbs of Rigachukun and Keke. When he overheard and realized they were outsiders in the region as they were summoning the villagers to guide them, an escapee engineer in the later said it gave him the courage to slip through heavily cultivated maize crops to escape. The argument is that if Zamfara is on fire for them, it is a foregone conclusion that they will seek refuge elsewhere. So, will the entire country of Nigeria be imprisoned incommunicado?

When it comes to the economic consequences of the places currently under siege, it’ll only be a matter of time before you hear them wailing. A man from Tsafe came begging yesterday because of economic stagnation; one would think that Gusau, the capital, is closer to beg than Kaduna.

We know the substance of those cynics who have nothing useful to contribute to the situation other than vituperation and abuses. There are no reservations! You don’t expect poo to smell good.

So, what’s the answer?

Excellent Intelligence! Good policing, including the involvement of local herders in policing, as well as the rehabilitation, reconciliation, and recompense of all banditry victims. The protection of people’s rights by a good, honest judiciary. Money and time well spent on these will undoubtedly cure the sickness of delinquency, crime, and poor governance in the country.

Bandits kill six people and injure others in Sokoto

Suspected bandits fleeing a military operation in Zamfara State have killed six people and kidnapped others in Sokoto State’s Tureta local government area.

The Tureta local government area shares a border with Zamfara State, which is currently undergoing a military operation.

Many people were injured as a result of the bandits’ invasion and are now receiving treatment in the hospital, according to reports.

Aside from the bandit invasion, the area is currently experiencing a telecommunications network outage in a neighboring state.

The bandits stormed the area around 2 a.m. on Thursday morning, according to the source.

According to the source, the attackers imitated Muslim prayers in order to deceive community members and draw attention to themselves.

“The residents started coming out, thinking it was time for a dawn prayer, and the bandits started shooting at them,” the source said.

According to the source, the area has been shocked by the killings and kidnappings, and some residents have begun to relocate to other areas.

The deputy governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Maniru Dan’iya, paid a visit to the area and assured residents of the government’s commitment to ending banditry in the state.

The state government, according to the deputy governor, will pay all of the injured people’s bills.

INEC yet to complete the renovation of its Awka office due to unknown gunmen

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is still repairing damage to its Awka office, which was attacked by unidentified gunmen in May.

The governorship election in Anambra, scheduled for November 6, is now less than two months away.

Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, issued a statement on Thursday providing an update.

In terms of non-sensitive materials, Okoye stated that INEC would dispatch materials from its Awka office rather than the previously stated Owerri office.

“The physical facility was severely damaged. The destruction of movable materials, including half of the non-sensitive materials already delivered, was also a success.

In order to meet our deadlines, we decided to distribute non-sensitive materials from our South East Zonal Stores in Owerri,” he said.

Hand sanitizers, face masks, envelopes, posters, stickers, sellotape, scissors, and liquid gum were among the non-pharmaceutical COVID-19 items he listed.

INEC’s plan to keep election materials in Imo was opposed by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

After reviewing the deadline for the work on the destroyed Awka office, Okoye stated that INEC is confident that it will be completed by the end of September.

He confirmed that non-sensitive materials would be batched and distributed from the facility.

The commission urged all parties involved to keep cooperating and work toward a credible election in Anambra.

Breaking: Buhari meets with leaders from the South-East, in Imo

0

On Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) met with leaders and stakeholders in the South-East.

The meeting took place during President Obama’s visit to Imo State, which coincided with agitation for an Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Separatists have ordered a sit-at-home on Mondays since the return of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to detention in Nigeria.

Nnamdi Kanu had previously been extradited by Nigerian authorities. Nnamdi Kanu was brought back, according to officials, after he jumped bail and went on the run in 2017.

His family and lawyers claim he was kidnapped, tortured, and flown back to Nigeria in June while in Kenya.

“After going around Owerri to commission a series of infrastructure projects by Governor Hope Uzodinma, the President is now participating in a Town Hall Meeting with South East Leaders,” a presidential aide, Tolu Ogunlesi, wrote on Facebook.

Buhari had previously stated that he would assist Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma in dealing with security breaches in the state.

Buhari said he was impressed with the state’s level of development while commissioning the Egbeada-Onitsha bypass road in Owerri.

“I went around and was impressed with what I saw,” the president said. A society without security and infrastructure will not progress, and I am fortunate that the governor of Imo state shares my vision. I will exercise my constitutional authority to force the governor to accomplish more.”

The governor urged the president to address the issues of insecurity and flooding that he said were ravaging Owerri, the state capital, in his speech.

VAT collection can only be done at the national level, not at the state level, according to FIRS

0

The Federal Inland Revenue Service has warned that value added tax collection in Nigeria can only be done at the national level, not at the state level. Issues such as the input-output mechanism and multiple tax rates, according to the agency, will obstruct VAT collection at the state level.

This was revealed in a statement made by Muhammad Nami, FIRS’ Executive Chairman, in a meeting with journalists on Wednesday evening.

What the FIRS boss had to say
“VAT is based on an input-output mechanism,” he explained. What this means is that a company importing or purchasing products will have to pay VAT, either at the port if importing or to the manufacturer if purchasing from a local manufacturer.

“And when that business pays VAT, it is accounted for as input tax in the business, so that when it starts selling in any part of Nigeria and charges VAT to its own customers, it is able to recoup the input tax paid either at the port if it is an imported item or paid to the manufacturer if it is a locally purchased item,” he added.

He stated that VAT can only be applied at the national level and not at the subnational level, in order to avoid consumer confusion and multiple payments.

“It only works at the national level,” he explained. VAT cannot be implemented at the subnational level.

“And there is no country in the world where VAT operates at the subnational level, for the simple reason that VAT is based on an input-output mechanism.”

“For instance, suppose a business person purchased an item in Osun state and paid VAT, and then took the item to sell in Sokoto state. Remember, he paid VAT when purchasing the product in Osun state, and when selling in Sokoto state, will charge VAT, and by the operations of the input/output mechanism, the business person will deduct the input tax paid in Osun state.

“In this case, because the VAT is handled by a single tax authority, the same authority that receives the VAT in Osun State will also receive the additional VAT due in Sokoto State.

“As a result, figuring out the input/output mechanism is simple, and there is no risk of a business being shortchanged or a consumer having to pay VAT more than once.”

He went on to say that the current system makes it simple to figure out the mechanism, and that there is no risk of the business being shortchanged or the consumer having to pay VAT twice.

“However, if this is done at the state level, it means that when a business person pays VAT in the state of origin, such as Osun, the state will collect the money, and when that person sells the item in Sokoto, the state will charge VAT.

“Here’s the conundrum: how does the company recoup VAT it has already paid?

“One of two things will occur. Either Osun state will have to refund the VAT collected, or Sokoto state will have to absorb the loss, which creates additional uncertainty.

He went on to say that another issue that could arise is the disparity in rates. “If Osun charges 10% VAT and Sokoto charges 5%, the businessman would have paid 10% VAT when purchasing the goods and will charge 5% VAT when selling.

“As a result, the input is greater than the output.” “Then who is responsible for the 5% shortfall?” he enquired.

In case you missed it, here’s a reminder.
1. A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt ruled that Rivers State, not the Federal Inland Revenue Service, should be responsible for collecting Value Added Tax (VAT) and Personal Income Tax (PIT) in the state.
2 On August 9, Justice Stephen Dalyop Pam issued an order of perpetual injunction prohibiting FIRS and the Attorney General of the Federation, the first and second defendants in the suit, from collecting, demanding, threatening, or intimidating residents of Rivers State to pay FIRS personnel income tax and VAT.
3. However, a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, dismissed an application by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to prevent the Rivers State Government from collecting Value Added Tax this week (VAT).
4. Following the court defeat, the FIRS urged taxpayers not to be alarmed by a recent court ruling on Value Added Tax (VAT) by the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, which directed taxpayers to continue to honor their tax obligations under the VAT act to the agency.
5. Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has stated that the state government will continue its efforts to prevent the federal government from collecting VAT from the oil-rich state.

A Mauritian medical team transported him from a private clinic to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport tarmac.

He hasn’t traveled outside of the country since losing the general elections in 2014 and being arrested.

The Mauritian government has assumed responsibility for guaranteeing the medical trip’s costs, which will be paid by the Labour Party later.

Since last week, Mauritius has seen an increase in Covid-19 deaths.

Breaking: President Buhari Arrives Imo State

0

President Buhari has landed in Owerri, Imo state, TeleVision Nigerian has learned.

The Presidential jet landed at about 09:30 a.m. He is set to meet with Igbo leaders and commission several projects in the state.

The President’s visit to the state generated some controversy as members of the Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB vowed to sabotage the visit.

However, the Nigerian Police Force vowed to crush people who want to cause trouble during and after the President’s visit.

The Police issued the warning after IPOB ordered a sit-at-home exercise in the state and four other southeastern states in apparent disapproval of Buhari’s visit. The pro-Biafra group’s Director of State, Chika Edoziem, announced the protest in a Radio Biafra Broadcast. He said, “Buhari is not welcome to Imo on Thursday, September 9, 2021.”

Several supporters were seen at the airport jubilating over the President’s visit.

NDPHC Targets 15MW Addition To Ekiti Electricity At Ido-Ekiti 17.5MVA, 33/11 Substation

0

After the ongoing 17.5MVA, 33/11KV injection substation in Ido-Ekiti is completed, the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) plans to add 15 megawatts of electricity to Ekiti.

Engr. IfeOluwa Oyedele, NDPHC executive director, Networks, said this during the groundbreaking ceremony for the substation in Ido-Ekiti, with its associated 33KV/11KV & LT lines and four 500KVA distribution substation transformers, noting that the power company had completed five injection substations in Ekiti state since its inception.

He stated that once the project is completed, it will improve the socioeconomic well-being of the people living in the affected areas.
“It is for the entire local government because the state of Ekiti has a power requirement of around 250MW. When you add 10 to 15 MW to that kind of load, you can see how big the difference is.

“And by reinforcing this, you will relieve other substaions of the load they are currently carrying. It is something that will benefit the entire community and its surroundings.

Following the intervention of the governor of Ekiti state, the NDPHC, in line with its mandate to improve electricity infrastructure in Nigeria, established a tripartite ad-hoc committee comprised of NDPHC, BEDC, and Ekiti state representatives to assess ways to improve electricity supply in the state, according to Oyedele.

The project being flagged off is one of ten proposed NDPHC intervention projects in Ekiti state, according to him. “We engaged with BEDC in scoping this project, and they assured us that NDPHC’s intervention in improving electricity infrastructure in this community will align with their proposed infrastructure upgrade in the Community and throughout the state.

“Since the inception of NDPHC, we have completed about five distribution projects in Ekiti state,” he said.
Oyedele also revealed that the company has built and commissioned over 350 injection substations across the country, with a total capacity of about 3540MW.
Furthermore, since its inception in 2004, the company has built a total of 18 substations, according to his statement.
“Since its inception, NDPHC has completed 2,194km of 330kV transmission lines and 887km of 132kV transmission lines. In addition, ten (10) new 330/132kV Substations and eight (8) new 132/33kV Substations were completed and connected to the National Grid, resulting in significant increases in 330kV and 132kV capacity of 5590MVA and 3493MVA, respectively.

“Across the length and breadth of the country, NDPHC has built and commissioned over 350 injection substations with a combined capacity of about 3540MW.

“NDPHC has also built approximately 2600 kilometers of 11-kilovolt and 4600 kilometers of 33-kilovolt distribution lines to improve access to electricity and the quality of power supply to consumers.

“We have been able to build generation stations with a capacity of 5000MW in the last 14 years. I’m sure you’re aware that the entire country of Nigeria has yet to reach the 5000MW mark. So, if you add 5000MW, you’ve effectively doubled Nigeria’s generation capacity.

“We currently have over ten projects that are 99 percent complete. The contribution of the NDPHC, as I stated in one of the interviews, if all the lines built by the NDPHC were removed, Nigeria would most likely be in darkness,” Oyedele said.

The Ekiti state governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, spoke at the project’s ground breaking ceremony, saying that the state’s power supply was “grossly inadequate” and that the substation, once completed, would “bridge the supply gap.”

Fayemi praised President Muhammadu Buhari and the NDPHC management for the project and called for its completion as soon as possible.
In an interview with journalists, the Olujodo of Ido-Ekiti, Oba Ayorinde Ilori Faboro, expressed his gratitude to the government and NDPHC, revealing that with the project, businesses that had relocated from the community would return.

“First and foremost, I thank the federal government for locating the substation here. We rely heavily on electricity. We’ve been through a lot. I’m currently running on a generator, and I’ve spent a lot of money on diesel. I’m spending money on a generator that I should be using for my upkeep. So, with this substation here and the promise that it will improve my town’s electricity supply, I am overjoyed. I’m also grateful to Ekiti State’s governor, the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, and everyone else who helped make it happen.

“I am confident that with good electricty, the businesses that have left this town due to poor electricty will return. It is fortunate that it has arrived in my town.

“In Ido-Osi Local Government, there are 13 communities, and this project will benefit all of them. We are now receiving our light from Omu’Aran (Kwara state). When the light comes, it will first shine on Otun, and when Otun is happy, they will shine on Aiyetoro along the road; when Aiyetoro is happy, they will pass the light on to Usi, and when Usi is happy, they will shine on us.

As a result, we don’t always have light during the week. We only get about 50 hours of electricity in a month, which is extremely insufficient. We won’t have to wait for these people to ration our light with this substation. Rather, we will now have power here and continue to distribute to other communities,” the monarch stated.

NNPC, NGX Investigate Capital Market Financing Options

0

This was stated during a courtesy visit by NGX management to NNPC, led by Mr. Abubakar Mahmoud, chairman of NGX, who stated, “As an Exchange, we are always interested in developing strong relationships with notable institutions like NNPC, and we are quite delighted at some of the recent developments we have seen.”

“As a result, we’d like to congratulate you on the successful signing of the Petroleum Industry Act, which we believe will transform the industry and, as a result, open up new opportunities for both NGX and NNPC to pursue in the future.”

Mr. Temi Popoola, the chief executive officer of NGX, praised the NNPC management for their outstanding efforts in improving transparency, accountability, and performance.

“Today, we are delighted to have the opportunity to explore several capital market related financing topics with the NNPC, including the possibility of a potential listing on the exchange,” he added.

According to Popoola, a NNPC listing would be extremely beneficial to the Nigerian capital markets and would go a long way toward deepening the NNPC’s current transformation.

“Furthermore, the capital markets offer the NNPC a credible opportunity to meet its short and long-term financing needs. NGX, in collaboration with other stakeholders, is eager to help.”

“The recent signing of the Petroleum Industry Act has opened up unique opportunities to create value for our shareholders,” said Mr. Mele Kyari, NNPC’s Group Managing Director. As a result, we will need to raise capital to strengthen our position as Africa’s largest corporation and expand capacity.”
“As a result, we will be delighted to collaborate with NGX on the short- and long-term financing options available in the market,” he added.
