Plateau Killings: Lalong reinstates a 24-hour curfew in Jos North while keeping the dusk-to-dawn curfew in Jos South and Bassa

0

Following rising tensions resulting from the attack on Jos North Local Government Area’s Yelwa Zangam village, where scores were killed, many were injured, and property was destroyed, the Plateau State Government has reinstated the 24-hour curfew that was previously relaxed.

Dr Makut Macham, the Governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, issued a press statement that was made available to journalists in Jos.

“The 24-hour period will begin at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, August 25, 2021, and will continue until further notice,” it says.

“The proactive decision became necessary following an imminent threat to lives and property within the Local Government Area, as well as the need to prevent the breakdown of law and order,” the statement continued.

“It will also allow security agencies to deploy appropriately in order to maintain security while the search for the villagers’ attackers continues.

The Governor urged residents of Jos North to cooperate with the government by adhering to the 24-hour curfew, which will begin at 4 p.m. on August 25, 2021, and will end at 4 a.m. on August 25, 2021. Security agencies have been mandated to ensure that those who violate the curfew are arrested.

The curfew in Jos South and Bassa LGAs, which runs from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., is still in effect until further notice.

“Only people on essential duties, such as health personnel, journalists, fire service, paramilitary, and others, are exempt from the curfew,” he explained, adding that they must carry identification with them at all times.

EPL: Chelsea lead the race to sign a £128 million midfielder, with three midfielders set to depart Stamford Bridge

0

According to the Telegraph, Chelsea has taken the lead in the race to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, who is valued at £128 million.

With Chelsea and Manchester United vying for the midfielder’s signature, Atlectico had opened the door for Niguez to leave the club.

Diego Simeone’s side is willing to let Saul go on loan for the season, with the option to buy included in the deal.

According to reports in Spain earlier this week, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team was ahead of the Blues in their pursuit of the midfielder.

However, The Telegraph reported on Wednesday night that Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea have begun talks with Atletico Madrid and are considering a deal similar to the one they struck with Real Madrid for Mateo Kovacic.

Kovacic joined on a one-year loan from Real Madrid before being made a permanent signing for a fee of £40 million.

However, before completing Saul’s signing, the Blues would have to let three players go: Ross Barkley, Tiemoue Bakayoko, and Danny Drinkwater.

Manchester United are in a similar situation to Chelsea in their pursuit of Saul, with Solskjaer having to trim his squad to make room for the Spaniard.

Boko Haram: Members’ repentance is a positive development – Governor Buni

0

The recent massive repentance of Boko Haram insurgents, according to Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, is a positive development.

Buni made his position known on Wednesday when he paid sympathy visits to the Emirs of Damaturu, Fika, and Pataskum over the recent flood disaster that claimed many lives, displaced many households, and destroyed property in their respective domains, according to a statement released by his spokesman, Mamman Mohammed.

He described the recent massive repentance of Boko Haram members as a positive development, and urged residents of the state to continue praying for the state and the country.

Governor Buni prayed, “We should be optimistic about this development and pray that this is the end of the insurgency.”

Buni is the most recent prominent Nigerian to express optimism about Boko Haram’s repentance, which has elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians.

Some Nigerians believe the repentant insurgents should be prosecuted for war crimes against Nigeria and Nigerians, while others have opposing views.

In a recent interview with journalists, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, stated that due to international conventions, Nigeria will not prosecute repentant Boko Haram terrorists.

He claimed that calls for the repentant fighters to be prosecuted and killed rather than granted amnesty were contrary to international best practices.

2023: Group requests that Atiku abandon his presidential ambitions

0

PDP Action 2023, a political pressure group, has spoken out against the possibility of Atiku Abubakar becoming the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general election.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Hon. Rufus Omeire, the group claimed that Atiku abandoned the party when his support, advice, and direction were most needed to provide leadership following his ill-fated Presidential election.

The group claimed that Atiku was too old for the race and advised him to step down in favor of younger candidates, stating that Atiku could serve as Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), but that in order for the PDP to achieve its goal, it must present an acceptable candidate for President in 2023.

“In 2019, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presented Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. He ran against President Buhari and was defeated. In 2023, he will be 77 years old. It’s a disgrace that he moved to Dubai after losing the presidential election, abandoning all PDP members, stakeholders, and millions of ordinary Nigerians who voted for him and PDP in 2019.

“It is a betrayal of trust for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to disregard

“Now that the 2023 elections are upon us, he has returned and resumed his campaigning. Apparently, politics is the only thing he excels at, according to the group.

The Waziri Adamawa has begun strategic meetings and politicking with Governor Wike in Port Harcourt, Governor Okowa in Delta State, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, and Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State to reposition himself as a possible flag bearer of the party, according to the group.

The group advised Atiku to let a younger candidate run for the party’s presidential nomination.

“We believe the time has come for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, GCON, to step aside and make way for others, preferably the younger generation. He could be asked to become Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, where he would serve as an elder statesman and advisor to younger politicians.”

The Delta State Government has confirmed that the state is experiencing an avian influenza outbreak, with 164, 173 birds reported dead.

Mr Julius Egbedi, the Commissioner for Agriculture, stated this to a reporter in Asaba on Wednesday.

”The government has taken steps to stop the disease from spreading.

”The flu has affected some poultry farms in seven local government areas across the state so far.

“We know it could be more than the reported figure of 164,173, but this is the official number from the reported cases.

“On June 22, we received a call from some poultry farms in Ughelli reporting a large number of birds dying.

“We sent a team of veterinary experts to the farms to collect samples, which we then sent to the Veterinary Institute in Gwon, Jos for analysis.

“However, when the results were released, it confirmed a case of Avian Flu,” Egbedi said.

The affected farms are in the Sapele, Udu, Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Oshimili South, and Okpe LGAs, according to the commissioner.

”Following the disease’s confirmation, the State Ministry of Agriculture dispatched experts to disinfect the infected farms in order to help prevent the disease from spreading,” he explained.

Residents of the state should not be alarmed, according to Egbedi, who stated that the government is working around the clock to combat the disease.

“We want the general public and all poultry farmers to know that the government is on top of things. There’s no need to be concerned.

“We also want to use this medium to reach out to poultry farmers across the state, encouraging them to report any bird deaths to the ministry.

“The state government recognizes its responsibility and will take all necessary steps to safeguard the poultry industry, which is a vital part of our agriculture economy,” Egbedi said.

NDA: Sack NSA Monguno now, group tells President Buhari

0

Following Tuesday’s attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy, the National Forum of Patriots (NFP) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to act fast and relieve National Security Adviser (NSA), Babangana Monguno, of his duties.

According to the group, Monguno is not awake to his responsibilities, displaying gross incompetence and lacking idea on how to galvanize and coordinate strategic actions to end banditry and other security challenges.

The NFP made this known in a press statement today co-signed by Dr. Rotimi Adelabu and Alhaji Ibrahim Bala, its convener and co-convener respectively.

The statement noted that the gains made by the Armed Forces of Nigeria are directly undermined by the lack of will from Monguno’s office which was embroiled in a multi-million dollar arms procurement scandal.

While troops and their commanders take the battle to the criminals, the group stated that the NSA’s transactional tendencies have made their effort meaningless.

The NFP said that if something urgent is not done, the progress made by the former service chiefs as Mr. President’s legacies will be eroded by the NSA’s negligence.

To avert further collapse, the forum, therefore, urged President Buhari to dismiss Monguno and appoint someone with the needed capacity, competence and courage to put the nation’s security architecture on the right path.

It reminded President Buhari that his pledge to insecurity was part of the reasons Nigerians voted for him and it is a travesty that a mere appointee of his has made make him look this bad before the nation.

Read the full statement below:

The National Forum of Patriots (NFP) has watched the degenerating security situation in several parts of the country and serious concern, the early Tuesday morning attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) being a watershed. The development calls for President Muhammadu Buhari taking far-reaching decisions that should start with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Babangana Monguno being relieved of his post immediately and with no further waste of time.

Nigerians have suffered the devastation of insecurity that the NSA should have effectively curbed if he were awake to his duty. What citizens are rather inundated with are reports of Monguno’s proclivity for material acquisition at the expense of making the country secure for Nigerians.

We keep reading about Monguno’s ties to shady procurement deals instead of reading about the value he has brought to arresting what is currently the most important thing to Nigerians, security.

We found it most unfortunate that the gains being made by the Armed Forces of Nigeria are being directly undermined by the lack of will emanating from the Office of the National Security Adviser. It is the NSA’s responsibility to cobble together all security and law enforcement efforts in a manner that accord cover to Nigerians.

The successes achieved by the past service chiefs as Mr. President’s legacies are being eroded at the same time new security threats are rising across the country. We tragically see new areas falling under the bloody grip of bandits and other criminal elements.

At a time when the country most needed competence, Monguno has proven to be lacking understanding of the current issues facing the country and his inability to galvanize and coordinate strategy actions that will see to the end of the banditry is one that should now be a source of worry for Nigerians.

Our worry is further compounded by the fact that it is a matter of time before Monguno re-infects the entire security architecture with the crass incompetence that he almost used to tarnish the image of those that sacrificed to secure the country. Troops and their commanders would be hard at work while the NSA’s transactional tendencies make them appear as if they are not doing anything meaningful to end Nigeria’s security crises.

It is on the strength of the foregoing that the National Forum of Patriots (NFP) hereby demands that something must give way and that is that President Muhammadu Buhari immediately sacks Babagana Monguno as the National Security Adviser (NSA) to enable those with the needed capacity, competence and courage occupy the position to, without any further delay, put the nation’s security architecture on the right path.

We like to remind Mr President that security was one of the major reasons Nigerians voted for him and it is a travesty that a mere appointee of his has made him look this bad before Nigerians. We demand that President Buhari immediately replaces Monguno with a capable person that will implement his vision of a secured Nigeria.

Mr. President needs to act NOW!

Insecurity: Northern elders demand Monguno’s sack over NDA attack

0

A prominent group, under the auspices of Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development (CNEPD), has demanded the immediate sack of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd.) following Tuesday’s attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy.

The Northern elders, in a statement following the attack, also sought an in-depth review of the entire security architecture, as according to them, the entire security chiefs must bear the blame.

In the statement condemning the attack, National Coordinator of the Group, Engr. Zana Goni, blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for leaving Monguno behind at the time he replaced service chiefs.

He, however, expressed unflinching support to the president and his party, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that their position was based on patriotism to the country.

The elders insisted that it was time for the president to do away with Monguno following the worsening insecurity in the country.

The deteriorating security situation, according to the Coalition, is a sign that Monguno, who manages the nation’s security, was not on top of his game.

The statement berated stakeholders in the region over what the group described as “their long silence in the face of unbearable criminal acts by armed herdsmen and insecurity across the country, thereby giving a bad image of the region.

“We find it once more expedient to comment on the worsening security situation in the country, especially the latest attack on a military formation, the Nigerian Defence Academy, which is the institution where future military leaders are trained.

“We woke up to the sad news of the attack on the NDA, leaving two officers killed and another abducted by bandits with heavy hearts. If it were not the confirmation of this unbelievable action by the Academy’s spokesperson, Bashir Jajira, we would have still been in doubt.

“The fact that a fortified military institution could be so easily invaded by armed militias without resistance has left us with the conclusion that no part of this country and no citizen, no matter his or her status is safe again.

“Without mincing words, we wish to attribute this ugly development to intelligence failure and gaps in the capacity of our armed forces. We wish to strongly say here that the attack is a slap on the Nigeria intelligence community and the armed forces.

“The retention of the National Security Adviser, General Babagana Monguno, at the time the president listened to the voice of reason and replaced service chiefs, may be contributing to the continuous deteriorating security situation in the country.

“Given the situation, we wish to humbly and respectively appeal to our dear President, Muhammadu Buhari, to as a matter of urgent national importance, replace the NSA, whose tenure since his assumption of office, has been characterised by heightened Boko Haram activities, banditry, kidnap for ransom and other heinous crimes without end in sight.”
